[ junctures ]
[junc∙ture] noun 1. A place where things join. 2. A certain point in events or time. 3. I relish the junctures in each design project, the magical point where two different worlds come together. The world of design and that of the space the project exists within, be it music, politics or tech. The fact that with each project a new world opens up to me makes working in design that little bit more exciting. Design doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and I love that.

[BRIEF] Create a limited edition fictional film festival for a director of your choice that revolves around a dominant theme in his films. [SOLUTION]
‘The Wreckage Within’ is a film festival that
celebrates the work of Director Darren Aranofsky. It revolves around the themes of obsession and self destruction, a common thread found in all of his films. I used custom imagery and typography to reinforce these themes, with oozing ink to represent the inward state of the characters, their minds, thoughts and gritty, shattered photographs showing the way they view the outward world.

[BRIEF] Create a book that depicts through imagery and type, the future you envision of a certain topic [SOLUTION] I was assigned the topic of Arabic type in which I quickly delved into researching. Based on the current trends I saw, I predicted that Arabic typography will be split into two camps in the future; the conservatives and the modernists. The modernists, represented in yellow, are an extension of the current experimental typographers, They are pushing the boundaries of Arabic type and will continue to take the experimentation to the next level in the future. While the conservative camp, represented in pink, based on the color of calligraphers’ ink, are more traditional, keeping taking their typography cues from old Arabic calligraphy.

BRIEF Single out a dead, defunct or dying brand, research its history and identify its soul. With that information in mind, breathe new life into the brand, expanding its’ services while staying true to its’ essence. Provide a comprehensive brand standards guide for the new rebrand. SOLUTION I chose Erector, a construction toy founded in 1913 that allowed children to create things they dreamed up. On that note I decided to rebrand Erector, with innovation being its core value, Hence what Erector would be like if it were to provide services to those innovative children as grown ups. The result is a hub for innovators, connecting them from all over the world and providing services that support their innovations from initiation to the completion phase.

[BRIEF] Design an experimental typography driven book of essay compilations under the theme time, space and reading. The book must include original photography and at least 10 theme based info-graphics related to the 10 articles at hand. [SOLUTION] I pulled 10 articles from the site I read where I am to use for the essays. The main typographical emphasis was the paragraph indicator, whereby I used two different styles, alternating with each chapter. A lenticular cover of a wave form was used to show the fluidity and flow of data visualization.

depending on the music I am listening to.
I created a dedicated play list to start of the process and took the trip several times, photographing and documenting my surroundings. Then altering them to reflect my state of mind.

[ A MFA THESIS ] The thesis project is a culmination of one year of in depth study and research into a topic of my choice. It is unlike any other project due to the sheer amount of time, effort and passion invested in it. I chose to focus on Egyptian politics, having just seen the 2011 Egyptian revolution break out in my home country.

[BRIEF] Choose an issue you are passionate about, carry out in depth research, coming up with a design solution to resolve the issue. [SOLUTION] Having left Egypt just before the 2011 revolution broke out I was very interested in seeing how the events that played out would effect the country, focusing my thesis on Egyptian politics. With the main objective of increasing the amount of positive political participation in Egypt I set out to find the most beneficial design solutions. The result being an online platform where Egyptians can voice their opinions on the way they would like to see Egypt run, creating a crowd sourced constitution, independently of any governmental institution or party.
