EXAMPLES FROM NATURE
Compound eye consists of thousands of individual photoreceptor units. These units are located on an eye surface, thus pointing in slightly different directions. This gives a very large view angle.
Sea sponge is covered by tiny pores, which lead internally to a system of canals. With water flow sea sponges recieve oxygen. It serves as shelter to small fish by giving them oxygen and protection.
Honeycomb is composed of hexigons. Hexigon tiles the plane with the minimal surface area, moreover this shape gives an apportunity to use less material than the regular structures. It is known that hexigon shape solar panels collect for 30% more energy.
Using the software ecotect to explore the varying thermal properties and response to sunlight with the 4 different shapes considered for the surface of the curved ‘compound eye‘.
This is the representation of a compound eye structure taken as a main type of unit for housing project. In this case the angle and the surface of the top part plays an important role.
DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING
This image shows a perspective view from inside the building. The original concept was about elevating the building for 6 meters in hight and putting huge glass funnels which would bring light into a lower level of the building.
