SWIMMING CENTER ARCH 100 SUMMER PROGRAM, 2014 UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON DURATION: 4 WEEKS INSTRUCTOR: JUDITH SWAIN
For the final project of the summer-long introduction to architecture we were tasked with creating either a swimming center, water taxi depot or interpretive center on an existing Portage Bay waterfront site. The swimming center presented an interesting program (being a pool on the waterfront) and was one I felt I could apply my past experiences with the natural water pools of Iceland to. The program also called for public access to the water via park and kayak ramp and encouraged a connection and consideration of the spirit of the original site. The final design features treated lake water and an experimental progression in an attempt to encourage the often dismissed operations required before entering the pool.

CONCEPT
Exploration of the progression of actions before entering a pool was the driving force behind the design of this project. Sparked by the necessity and social expectations of cleansing before swimming in Iceland, I exaggerated the suggestions of washing into a path of ritualistic pleasure. The individual changing rooms represent a moment of privacy before emerging into the public, hinted at by the framed view of the bay at the end of the corridor; the open showers embrace this view, with nearly 360ยบ of exposure from the boaters in the bay to the swimmers in the pool; and the sauna and steam room represent the zenith of the ritual with the sky-lit and isolated plunge pool. These spaces attempt to challenge and make interesting the process of cleansing.

PHOTOGRAPHS
The photographs included here were chosen as a representation of my own independent exploration of creative expression as well as a window to my perceptions of the various built environments around the world. All photographs were taken using a 35mm film camera.
