The Urban Phenomenon; Creating Connection between
People, Place and Environment. Aarhus, Denmark.
View from rooftops, Botanical Gardens
‘Between thinking and doing there is experience... when we have an experience we are taking part in the world, when we share a collective experience we feel a connection with others.’ This project focuses on how we can experience and organise our cities in a different way. It muses on the idea of what ‘culture’ is today and how the future development of the city can be conducive to the promortion of common culure in public space and the evolution of the unique character the city of Aarhus withholds.
and a connection to what the place really is gives one the ability to feel as though they can take part in it. Inspired by the words and work of Olifur Ellsion the project appreaciates the role of art in public space and its ablility to give tangibilty to space and thus create public places that are sensitive to indivduality and collectivity.
Culture is one of the most important factors affecting the social and economic growth of a city, by invoking culture as a structural foundation in the development of the city and the urban environment helps create good public space - an open platform for encounter and exchange, promoting a collective consciousness.
The concept reflects on the ‘culture’ of the current era as we begin to realise the consequences of human actions in regard to the planet initiating an emerging movement from the anthropocene to the ecoscene, that is from a human centered system of values to a nature-centered. The project argues that when we talk about collectivity today we cannot exclude ourselves from the environment. The central idea to the anthropocentric to ecocentric movement is that we are also a part of nature, ‘we are “embedded” in nature. Nature is a surrounding medium that sustains our being.’ (T. Morten)
Looking at Aarhus in a time of great change this project highlights the importance of sense of place as a part of the preservation and evolution of the unique city image. The selected intervention location was established by the ‘Aarhus Culture Axis’ an area defined by the dominant cultural institutional buildings of the city, which also falls within many current or soon to be development areas. The project explores how these sites can be developed with strong public platforms providing an opportunity for connection between the newly emerging districts along with the older city parts. The challenge in creating a well functioning public space is how to make a space that gives everyone a sense that they can be a part of this place. In order for this to happen one must feel that they have a body that is part of the space, in other words the space must have demension - become tangible. By giving tangibility to a space, an understandable perception
Exploring this concept this project searches for new ways we can experience our city through elementary experiences that respond to us on a micro/macro scale offering moments of reflection and deeper understandings, which we require from close contact with nature. It considers the sun and the wind; environmental elements that are a part of our quotidian city life and how these can be utilised as positive atmospherical factors, but it also argues that if we are also a part of nature there is potential for similar macro scale experiences from our interaction with one another and the spaces we inhabit. This is pursued by working with the element surprise and discovery.
Unique Cultural Mapping This project works with the idea of culture as an umbrella terms that covers all. The cultural image of a city can be represented by the larger institutions, but it also involves how people live in a place and how the visual and spatially create these places. Research and investigation was a combination of traditional urban mapping of buildings, districts, urban spaces and traffic and pedestrian flows combined with on-site personal experience of places and the city in attempt to uncover Aarhus’ unique and inherent existing qualities. The investigation was undertaken at a series of scales from the larger urban city scale right down to the human scale of experience within the urban fabric. The project followed as an investigation as to how to make a connection between these scales within a city.
Latin Quater
The area of intervension was selected initially as a result of the culture axis which has been declared so by the Aarhus municipality. It is a curving line that moves from the new harbour where the crusise ships arrive through the main cultural institutions of the city ending up-hill in the Botanical gardens. This area also falls with many development areas Aarhus is currently in a period of great growth and change and is developing as a series of seperate mini districts. The project looked to find ways to make a connection between these new urban zones by creating areas of shared public space. The research looked to identify the existing and potential future strenghts and weakness of the different the districts and how they can benifit from one another, whilst also making connections to their past and future use.

The Urban Phenomenon ; Creating Connection Between People, City and Environment
Concept Strategy
The design strategy follows the research and theoretical concepts by creating connections across the city between a number of scales by adding ‘nature’ in a variety of forms and embedding ‘surprises’ within the urban fabric that add to our understanding of scale and place. The strategy is has two major compoents. 1. A connecting green structure 2. Placing of connecting elements - The Urban Phenoneon There are large areas of exisiting green along the site and green proposals have already been planned in the indicated development areas, this green will be incorporated with the new building structures. The proposal of this strategy is that the connection can be strengthened by adding additional green to the areas inbetween, thus making a strong and coherent green structure along the culture axis connecting the separate districts and linking this development zone to the North woods, South woods and the River Valley. The Green structure meets the city structure at Banegårdspladsen with a cross emphasising the well defined plaza. Interventions in the form of elements called ‘the urban phenomeon are made at specific locations to improve flow and create urban environments. The strategy of each intervention includes an element. The elements can be followed through the city as a tourist route, each one highlighting the unique qualities of the specific site and the city.
The area of intervesion intersects with the three main arrival points in the city; the Cruise ship port, the train station and the bus station. As the future of the airport is uncertain and its use increasingly declining these ports hold great importance for the cities image and connecting flow. An intervension is made at the cruise ship arrival port and at Banegardspladsen, the historic square conncting to the train and future bus station. The elements are strategically positioned to improve the flow of people through the city creating new dominant route ways that focus on the priority of pedestrians over vehicle traffic. The intension is that they should act as attraction points for flow as people are often the most interesting landscape in the urban environment. The interventions connect to the surrounding streets as well as providing places to stop, stay, people watch or act as locations for city events. Visual connection plays an important role between the elements and the existing city. Aarhus has generally a uniform building height of four/ five stories, resulting in any high point to stand out as visual landmarks such as Aarhus Domkirke, Rådhus and Aros. The preservation of these visual connections is important in the development of the city. If one can see a place one feels a connection to that place both physically in an orientating sense but also emotionally adding to their sense of place.

INSIDE works with a transformation of the old sea relic. Creating a connection to the site’s history. The scrap element was previously used at sea to constrcut wind turbines and today lies disused contributing to a junk yard of left over peices located on one of the most beautiful spot in the city.
The proposal sugests the alteration of the relic by flipping it and then adjusted to create an interactive installation focusing on the experience of wind. Users can enter the object on ground level from which there is a single view of the sky through the dark tunnel upwards. Holes are punctured in the sides of the object, designed like a wind instrument that amplifies the natural air flow.
The user can climb a spiral stair case upwards to the top of the tower onto a circular viewing platform where they can feel the air flow on their body as they walk around the platform. The element is intended to activate an area where there is currently no common urban meeting place. The location itself is very beautiful, with the flat reflective surroundings of water and an unique view back at the city. INSIDE works to expose this wonderful location to those who have not discovered it and creates an interesting event at the currently desolate arrival port of the cruise ships

OVER works with the transformation of the in-
dustrial realic klubroen into a new park element. Previously used to transport coal from cargoships the leftover realic now lies dissused in the old industrial ground that is awaiting renewal into a new urban distict Sydhavn.
1.5 m will be added to either side to make a large walking platform with seating and meeting places. The bridge travels across the road and into the Fredricks Plads district where it meets the ground terrain as it slops downwards with a ramp.
Already the old bridge is operating as a magnetic point for people and the location frequently holds pop-up events. This proposal suggests that it is extended approximately 90 meters connecting the Sydhavn development to the existing city and the city to the water front.
The underside of the old bridge is exposed showing the original structure, while the underside of the additional part is activated with a mirror adding a playful surprise. The structural columns of the additional part fall irregularly echoing the structure of the surrounding trees.

UNDER preforms the task of cleaning up the
currently congested historic plaza BanegĂĽrdspladsen from traffic and parking, allowing pedestrians to cross the space and enjoy the well-defined plaza. The addition of the light rail in 2018 brings the opportunity to alter the traffic flow. The project proposes the restriction of private cars from crossing the square. Instead they will pass on the West side and the central space is left open for pedestrians, cafe seating and larger events. Bike parking that today clutters the square and surrounding streets is placed under the plaza in a parking basement. The basement is accessed by a spiral ramp that also functions as a seating element.
The roof-lit basement is fitted with prism glass features. Working under the same concept as the Circumhorizontal Arc it takes advantage of the sun light allowing atmospherical coloured light to shine into the basement bringing an aesthetic quality to the space from the natural element. The basement is on the same level as the near by train tracks and can be access directly from the platforms, providing an interesting new arrival scene to the city. Marking the plaza Private traffic

UP + DOWN works to make a connection between multiple city parts by creating a new axis from Rådhus to Århus Å. It suggest a transformation of Central Park and the Scandinavian Center both of which are not functional as public meeting spaces and the processes of their change in function is already under way. SC is located on a hill 17m deep and houses a larger car park underground making the above ground parking on either end of the building unnecessary.
The proposal suggests removal of parking above ground, the removal of the long glass canopy at the east entrance and the facades opened permanently at either end on ground floor transforming the center of the building into a public urban arcade connecting CP to the new Aarhus K. The axis continues through Aarhus K meeting the river and the nature route to the outer lakes. This axis creates a pedestrian boulevard 11m wide that can be used as a common space and location for events. The additional green strcuture further bonds this link.
Three focus points are created along the axis that act as meeting places and together tell a story at a human scale about the typography and distance of this new connection between the Rådhus tower and the Aarhus River (Århus Å), two major landmarks of the city. The first an iteractive drinking fountain in the center of CP with a well 17m deep. Water flows form the outside of the fountain into the lit well reveiling the depth to water level by the echoing sound of the water. From this first point (the well) the top of the second point can be seen - a 17m tall lighing poll with a seating element at it base. The lighting pattern on the pole mirrors the lighting features down well. This works to reveil the depth of the surrounding terrain and transforms the backside of SC into a new front side, meeting AK. The third point is an idetical seating element placed in the river at the end of the axis with a hole in its center marking the absence of the lighting pole and drawing attention to water level. Together they act as pathfinders along this trail. +17

Nagoan Square
Aideen O’Donovan 2014
Nagoan Square, Nagoan, Maharashtra India.
The village of Nagoan is situated in the Indian state of Maharashtra. A normal Indian village, it is located on a historical infrastructural road layout made during the Muslim dominated Mughal kingdom from 1526 to 1857. Along this road, small villages were grouped like pearls on a string, and the villages were grouped around an existing pond or articifical water tank, which was attached to a sacred temple that served was a central meeting place for the city. Today the temple remains a focal point for the community, but the water temple tank is heavily polluted and only used by a small percentage of the community for washing. The open space surrounding the temple & temple tank is poorly maintaned, overgrown and covered in litter. The activity around the square is filled with vendors who come to sell to the community of Nagoan at a weekly market. The breif began with an open anthropological inverstigattion of the community in Nagoan & their use of & relationship to the site. From this we developed a breif that aimed to redevelop the square with a focus on better ground conditions for the market, drainage coverage during monsoon season july, august 6 september, a public toilet for both sexes, a washing station to keep contaminated water seperate from the existing temple tank & a system for water purification.
INDIA
The project’s architecture was heavily inspired by the plinth, which can be seen throughout Indian architecture. Activity happens openly within this space which lies on the threshold between public and private space. a universal public space used throughout India, it has both practical and social functions.

The scheme responds to the two distinctly different sides of the site; The hard landscape of the busy market street and the soft green landscape surrounding the water tank. The scheme also takes a step back from the temple respecting the hierarchy. A paving pattern is used to define the roadway and visually resemble the merging of the hard and the soft landscape creating a playful and interesting space in-between. A concrete plinth lines the roadway acting as a ‘public veranda´ this contains the site program; a bus stop, a public toilet, a dishes and collecting drinking water.
A wetland located in the lowest point of the site is used to clean all water from the site while leading it to the water pond, this space also acts a new green recreation area close to the water. A walkway is established around the water tank linking both old and new connections points to the water. The scheme takes advantage of the spaces located under the existing tress to provide shares for the marketeers & daily site users.

The plinth along the roadway houses the site programme. Flexible in use it is adaptable to the various activities that take place in the square through the day, week & year. A light roofing structure is used to provide shading & rain protection for the marketeers who sell during the monsoon season - this is significantly fewer than during the dry period as there are less products to sell, snd so the market generally only takes place along the roadside . During the weekly Thursday market bright orange canopies are hung from trees, vehicles & surrounding buildings to provide shade for the vendors. The new structure can be used as additional support for this temporary shading device.

Ground Paving Patern Sizing & Layout
The project focuses on using low budget materials that fit in with the existing building structures around Nagoan square. The roof construction and design was heavily inspired by the surrounding structures. There are two materials used throughout the project - steel and concrete. The roofing structure is made of a steel frame and a corrugated steel sheet roof. The ground pavement comprises of concrete, coloured in various shades of grey, while the concrete used in the plinth along the roadway is coloured a deep rusty red. Paving is designed & detailed to vary in gradient, defining the roadway and the various recreational areas throughout the site.

An Urban Living Room
The site is located within the city block of Partricks Quay & MacCurtain St. The breif called for a collection of public and private everyday spaces that encorporate a much need public space for the inhabitants of the MacCurtain St. area and the North side of the city. The focal point of the scheme is an outdoor public square surrounded by various public and private buildings connected by an outdoor gallery. Thebuilding is designed so as to increase visual interaction between different spaces, allowing the users and visitors of the project to enjoy the sights and drama of everyday life. An outdoor public routeway links the two distinctly different streets responding to there unique characters; a narrow walkway leads to the central square which then opens up a to create a raised public space overlooking the river and the city center beyond. The public walkway is marked by a bronze structure that runs through the site and moves surrounding the main public space. It culminates in a larger window located in the gallery space on the top floor where public routeway cones to an end overlooking the eclectic activity of MacCurtain St.

The brief was designed to combine a variety of functions both public and private that could be used by all members of society. The narrow public walkway leading from Mac Curtain Street is lined with a post office on one side and a three story public library on the other. On the fourth floor above the post office a gallery can be found. This marks the end of the public route-way. A cafe bar is fronted onto the east side of the square, behind which a theatre is located. Performance and practice spaces for the theatre are located above the bar interacting visually with both the theatre and square. The South side of the square is open on ground level providing the public with a large open space overlooking the river. Above this 18 flexible use chamber spaces sit facing the central part of the city and over looking the river below. The idea behind the brief was that they are for the large part flexible use and the complex as a whole can be adapted in its use as needed over time.

Elevations The project faces onto two distinctly different street elevations each with unique characters and functional requirements. FIG 1. Elevation Patrick’s Quay. (Transparency). The brief called for a building that would begin the regeneration of the River-side elevation along the Quay’s. The building responds to this by creating a public podium reminiscent of the old Quay side court buildings and churches raising the public realm above the traffic. Above this hovers a single pure glass bar whose appearance varies throughout the day and night showing the activity of the chambers. At night the bar is lit and reflected on the river’s surface. FIG 2. Elevation MacCurtain St. (Secrecy). The stone facade varies in hight and depth echoing the rhythm of the building facades of it’s context. The VHOM exists on 3 levels; each taking on a different function, character and orientation. A singular concrete core links the 3 floors providing the required services and circulation. The private modular classroom spaces are located on first floor level. The facade of which is made up of two layers giving the building a rhythmic quality of constant change. The inner layer of glass mirrors the neighboring trees while the timber shading devices appear like tree trucks providing mere glimpses of views between the classroom and the park. The park is left almost completely open at ground level allowing park users the freedom to walk under and around the building and to take in both the sights and sounds of the music building and the park. Concrete columns fall upon the park at irregular intervals echoing the structure of the surrounding trees. A public exhibition space and cafe is located on the road-side edge. This spaces feeds off from the central core and is lined with a glass curtain wall. The semi-public black-box auditorium is located beneath the park facing onto a public walkway which lines the river-side for the full length of the park and beyond.

As part of the annual culture festival in Aarhus Schøherr were asked to create a temporary installation in the palzatolocated colour and composition conveydirectly outside the central train station. This space asts as the primary arrival and composition to convey visual language of to the point theproject city. It’s currently dominated by heavy traffic, road signs and advertisments which makes language of the project it extremely difficult for pedestrians to relax in the space and to experience the well defined plaza.

by design’ practce the project followed the theme of the festival ‘Same but different’ and set out to temporarly change the space in an attempt to alter the users persepective of the place and reveal new, and obvious possibilities. The idea behind the transformation of the space was based on a future traffic plan for 2010. The ambition of this plan is to reduce the amount of traffic in the space, giving more importance to pedestian use of the plaza. The project set out to test what would happen if this furture plan was put in place. All private traffic was blocked from the plaza during the festival alling only public transport to run through the space. This allowed the number of traffic lanes to be reduced from five to two. The space was transformed into one level by grating a giant ‘sand box’ (a timber frame filled with gravel).

Town Square, Nykøbing Falster, Denmark. 2014
Town Square, Nykøbing Falster, Denmark. The images shown were created as part of a competition entry for the redevelopment of the historical town square in the Danish town Nykøbing Falster. The central concept of the new square was to combine the surrounding streets and create a new urban heart in the center of the center of the town with one coherant floor and combination of elements on the square, which reflect ona poetic story of the towns creation and history. I was involved in the design process from the beginning, working with the research, anyalsis, cocnept development, design and presentation. As part of the design phase my skills we used for the paving pattern development, which covers the entire floor surfave of the space. the concept fot this was based the historical idea that you step directly onto a squre regardless of the direction enter from.

Wadden Sea Center, Vester Vand, Denmark. 2014
Wadden Sea Center, Vester Vand, Denmark. Schøherr was invited together with Cbo Architects to design a proposal for an oberservatory, information and recreation center around the UNESCO world heritage area the ‘Wadden Sea’ Denmarks largest National Park. The concept of the landscape design used the historic landscape element of the warft, which is characteristic to the terrain of this flat land area on the West coast of Denmark. It also uses a moat as an alternative fence, which was called for in the brief, to control access to the center and grounds. I was involved in the design disscussions with the building architects, the design testing and development and the prepertation of presentation material for the compeition.

Vision Vestergade, Ikast Denmark. 2014
Vision Vestergade, Ikast Denmark. Vision Vestergade was a compeition proposal Schonherr dreate and won together with Cubo Architects in 2014. The prject brieft called for a multi activity center that would bring create a social meeting place for the surrounding communities. The ambition of the center was to help provided jobs and activities for the loacal residence who where without work and and unable to to cope with normal working conditions. To increase the qualitiy of life for such people and to provide a place for people of different social groups to meet and intereact on an equal social premisis. The breif called for proposal; that could accomidate many activities everything from gardens and riding school to a user cafe, camp site, orientering, skate park, BMX track, workshop, music practice spaces, nature activity course etc.. only imagination adn creativity could limit the possibilities. The project proposal encorperate all of these activities and more, as well as encorperating the surrounding landscape by allowing the blue and green stuctures of the local terrain to feed in and through the site creating a natural environment. I was involved in the project largely in the design phase, during the merging of the overall concept with the design and layout of the specfiic facilities. I also created the majoritiy of the visual material used for the competition entry.

“This Way” Exhibition Kuntstmueum, Wolfsberg,Germany. 2015
“This Way”
Exhibition Kuntstmueum, Wolfsberg, Germany “This Way” was an exhibition of art works by Jeppe Hein in the main exhibition space of the Wolfsberg Contemporary Art. The exhibition displayed art works by the artist, both paintings and intereactive sculptures as well as on-site workshop spaces to be used my visitors. The concept of the exhibtion “This Way” involved the designing of the layout as a type of maze where the indidvuals have the opition of choosing from at least or two more different paths at anytime. Just like real life each visitor retains the freedom to choose his own individual path through the exhibition. The space itself messured 70m x 70m with a 22m high ceiling. I was involved in the modeling and testing of the design of the exhibtion space. The comprised of a series of large and small triangular and polygonal spaces with wide and narrow paths, dead ends and a variety of croissings within which the visitors were surprised by the artworks. The mind, the body and the senses are all needed when the museum’s large exhibition hall is turned into a labyrinth.

Jeppe Hein Laboratory, Berlin,Germany. 2015
Jeppe Hein Laboratory, Kreuzberg, Berlin. My time at Studio Jeppe Hein was an exploitative period becoming acquainted with the works and life of the artist, his studio and the arts scene. The main concept of his current artworks revolve around ideas of social interaction and spacial alterations both in a physical and a metaphysical sense. The studio is a multidisciplinary work space including architects, designers, technicians and project managers. The projects are taking from an exploitative sketch phase to a design phase and many also under go an extensive exploitative testing and modeling process. The studio also works as an on-site exhibition space for guests to the studio, the studio members and the artist himself to experience the art works as part of daily life. The space is constantly under change with new test models being created, real installations being constructed, tested and packed away and full scale wall paintings appearing and disappearing over night. I spent the majority of my time working on the modeling and exploration phases of projects working at a variety of scales from 1:1 to 1:100. While also looking at the pieces at a larger scale and how they could connect to the varying sites. I worked on creating site plans, visualizing artworks, detailed design and the compiling of presentation documents. Displayed here are a selection of the projects I worked with; Path of Silence paving design, Kistefos, Norway. Kongens Nytrov Mirror Balloon Installation, Copenhagen. Charka Mobile Light Objects testing and modeling. It was an interesting time for me where I becoming increasingly more sensitivity to the human experience and interaction as a part of design for elements and spaces as well as getting a very unique insight into the creative development of art pieces and the workings of the art scene.
