Hey AIESEC! What’s up? My name is Maya Mboup, and I am the Local Committee President (LCP) of AIESEC Ryerson! It is truly a pleasure for me to be representing such a talented group of students. With a body of nearly 70 student members in AIESEC Ryerson we definitely have the potential to make our mark in our university and our local and global community at large. I am a 3rd year student in the Business Technology Management program here at Ryerson. I’m involved in various extracurricular activities and have a passion for community involvement which can be seen in the community work I do. I joined AIESEC in September of 2008 as an Elections Officer. I then became the Director of Recruitment and Events in Talent Management in 2009. In 2010, I took on the position as Vice-President of Corporate Relations for AIESEC Ryerson, which led me to my current position as President. Throughout my AIESEC Experience I have attending many AIESEC Conferencing, my first being the Ontario Quebec Regional Conference in Montreal in February 2009. It was an amazing experience, very memorable. I recommend all of you to experience an AIESEC Conference! A great start would be NLDC (National Leadership Development Conference) May 4th-9th in Ottawa!! (You will receive more information on this) My vision for AIESEC Ryerson this year consists of happy members who are living out their AIESEC leadership experience, many realized exchanges so our AIESECers can make their mark around the world, and increase internship opportunities in Canada for our fellow AIESECers in international locations! We can surely reach our goals if we collectively work towards. I hope all of you will be able to round out your AIESEC experience with beneficial leadership opportunities, international internships, and of course the fun and educational AIESEC conferences. I look forward to meeting you all! I close this message off with our AIESEC Ryerson Cheer! “AIESEC Ryerson’s Dynamite don’t mess with Dynamite LOUDER! AIESEC Ryerson’s Dynamite! Don’t mess with DYNAMITE!!!” Stay Dynamite Team! <3 Maya Mboup President, AIESEC Ryerson maya.mboup@aiesec.net Cell: 647 213 3665

“The best part of joining AIESEC for me is that I got to meet and network with people who I thought I wouldn’t have ever gotten a chance to and has allowed me to understand what sort of person I have become and the potentials that I have. It improved my university life because it was a student organization that allowed each member to take on a role and to meet people who will eventually become friends. For me, my time at AIESEC Ryerson has been great. I met people who I can see being my friends in the future. It also allowed me to improve on the skills that I thought I have perfected.“

Incoming Exchange (ICX) has two different aspects: matching potential exchange participants (EPs) to Traineeship Nomination (TNs) that have been raised as well as facilitating the needs of the intern once they get to Canada. The matching process consists of understanding what the TN wants in an intern than reviewing all prospect applicants that are interested in the job. Interviews will then be conducted in order to find the right person for the TN. As part of ICX, we need to facilitate the needs of the intern by finding them a place to live, government IDs, bank accounts, and much more.

April 2011

Vol - 1

One of the first initiatives that was taken with the new role of ICX was to figure out how the current interns were doing and what they wanted from their experience in Canada. From the feedback that was given, the interns did not feel a sense of belonging in the LC because there wasn’t an initiative to get the interns involve in the different events that were held in the past. They felt that the LC could’ve done better to integrate them with the members in the past years.

Drinks at Mill St. Brewery This was the first get together were ICX was able to get to know the interns on a more personal level that allowed for ICX to know what the interns want from their time here in Canada. Events were then planned in the future that came from the consultation at this event.

Nasko’s Going Away Party Nasko, our intern from Bulgaria, left recently and the LCs of GTA decided to host a go away party for him at Madison’s. Personal gifts and video messages were recorded and given to Nasko so that he’ll always remember his time here in Canada.

I’m the Vice President of Out-Going Exchange for AIESEC Ryerson. As a Global Management and Marketing major, I felt that in classes we were able to learn a number of theories but never got the chance to apply them in a real-life situation. AIESEC was a great opportunity for me to do just that. It allows me to learn, explore and grow in a friendly environment, without having to face the severe consequences of the work place. Since AIESEC operates just like a multinational corporation, it gives hand-on experience in various business disciplines. However, in my opinion, the best part of joining AIESEC is the creative, energetic and committed individuals in it. Since AIESEC is such a diverse group, it gave me an opportunity to learn about other cultures and feel a connection with people I have never met. The sense of belonging that this group gives, creates a network that expands to all around the world, connecting you to people you otherwise would not have met. This is why I am proud to be an AIESECer!

Exploring the Amazon Last year, one of our very own EPs (exchange participants), Shafi Jatoi, went on an internship to Brazil. He was matched to a Vale TN in Rio de Janeiro, as a Payroll Accountant. Excited about his internship, he would have never guessed what Brazil had in store for him. He had anticipated his job to be a bit dry, but looked forward to exploring this rich new culture. However, a few weeks into his internship, he wasn’t sitting behind a desk buried under paperwork; in fact he was part of a Client Interface and Project Management team and was interacting with Vale Australia and Kuala Lampur. He was positively delighted by this turn of fate as it further enriched his experience. During his trip, he also got a chance to explore the Amazon rainforest. Trekking on a 4 day adventure of a lifetime, he faced the many wonders this great forest had to offer. In this adventure he encountered all kinds of insects, fish, lizards and even battled an alligator (just kidding, but he did see one!). I’m sure that prepared him to take on the monsters of the urban jungle. Now that all of you know about the adventures of Shafi, be prepared for when we welcome him back to Canada, the safe haven for all. Stay tuned for the date, and be sure to hear all about it from the man himself.

In order to really experience a culture, you need to live among and interact with the locals. AIESEC provides individuals with the opportunity to travel the world and get a true taste of another culture. The knowledge, experience, learning and fun you gain from AIESEC is priceless. It provides individuals with internship opportunities, national and international conferences as well as the chance for anyone to become the leader of tomorrow. The best part of joining AIESEC is to meet people from different countries, cultures, and ethnicity whether is be in your own Local Committee or through international experience. Being part of AIESEC Ryerson for over a year, the conferences, dances and events with its sheer diversity, energy and high spirits absolutely left me astounded. I love everything about AIESEC Ryerson; from team bonding activities to hosting events to watching other cultures enthusiasm for AIESEC dances such as the Indian song Tunak Tunak, and the list goes on. Overall, if all individuals can experience the services AIESEC offers (both Exchange and Leadership opportunities - X & L), then it will certainly be a life changing experience for them.

Holiday Party The first ever “End-of-Year Partay” brought by TM portfolio - was indeed a great success!!! Its purpose was to strengthen the bonds among our LC members as well as those who attended from York and UofT and to celebrate theW2011 Newsletter End of Year 2010 among our AIESEC family!!! The night was filled with amazing games (musical chairs, dancing with orange, hershey relay), rewards & recognition (individuals’ performance - received certificates, 2010 EBs - recognized for their hard work throughout the year), and dances (Tunak Tunak, Life in the New Millennium, etc...)!!! Everyone enjoyed the Christmas Holiday theme/decorations and the delicious foods brought by each attendees (as it was a potluck). 13

Winter Recruitment AIESEC Ryerson had a successful winter recruitment with over 25 new members; each were allocated respectively in one of their top three portfolio choices as well as based on their skill sets they bring to AIESEC RU!

How to Network + E-mail Etiquette The seminar was very insightful and informative for our members. Our guest speaker for “How To Network” was Aino Lokk, who is an Employment Counsellor from the Career Development & Employment Centre at Ryerson University. For “E-mail Etiquette”, our guest speakers were Richard Yang, an AIESEC Alumni and LCP of AIESEC Ryerson in 2007, and James Ledgerwood, VP of COMMS. The participants were very active and engaged throughout the seminar as they were given hands-on/scenario/role-play activities to perform in order to educate AIESECers on how to handle various situations pertaining to both topics.

Induction Day Induction Day is a way to educate new members about AIESEC as a whole; the history, details about each portfolio, conferences, leadership opportunities, and the Global Internship Program. In short, Induction day teaches members about the AIESEC Way. This event provides the new members the information they need to start their journey in AIESEC! We had over 30 attendees and it started off with an ice breaker to let the members get comfortable and be more relaxed in the room setting. We had three of our interns Daniel Scholz from Germany, Atanas Genkov (Nasko)

from Bulgaria, & Nicolas Bustos Baron from Colombia join us and share their AIESEC Experiences with AIESEC Ryerson. There was a Simulation activity which allowed the participants to gain more knowledge on each portfolio in the LC so that they have a sense of how each portfolio contributes to AIESEC’s goals. Towards the end, we had our MCP Vitor de Avalar talk about his experience in AIESEC, followed by the MCP of Kenya Fiona Akumu, MCVP from Ukraine - Daria Brailko, LCP from the highest performing LC in the AIESEC Network in China - Olivia Lee. It was amazing to have such passionate AIESECers all share their AIESEC way and it positively inspired our members.

First General Assembly Our first monthly GA of the year had a solid turn out with many new members really starting their AIESEC journey! It was really inclusive of all members (seniors, new ones, and interns). Members had the opportunity to interact and learn more about each other; whether it was through ice breakers, refreshment break to mingle. The “Gossip

The Year Planning session providing many amazing new ideas were incorporated into AIESEC Ryerson’s 2011-2012 year plan and that could not have been accomplished without the dedicated members that were present at the GA and ready to share their ideas.

Ultimate goals of finance are advising the LC regarding financial matters, controlling expenses and developing financial policies and procedures. Also, we are trying to enforce policies and procedures by engaging the entire LC. Maintain accurate financial records for a minimum of seven years is our long term goal. Our biggest achievement is that we have successfully obtained funding from RCS and PFACS for our national conference and National leadership development conference. Recurring quarterly responsibilities for finance is recording journal entries on

simple accounting, preparing balance sheet, income statement, bank reconciliation and reviewing prepared budget, which have been successfully finished and submitted to AIESEC CANADA in last quarter. The benefits of finance would be developing advanced managerial skills by managing limited resources to gain maximum efficiency and developing one’s own leadership skills by engaging in teamwork and projects. Also, one can learn more about organizational accounting and finance, which is a critical skill in many aspects.

Alumni Relations

22

Hello my name is Mohamed Mahdi, the current vice president of alumni relations. I have been a part of AIESEC for two years moving up from a general member to various director roles before taking a position on the executive board. AIESEC has truly had an impact in my life and developed my skills personally and professionally, taught me many skills that I still work on polishing and perfecting to manage, lead, and motivate people on my teams. The various alumni that I have met through AIESEC have motivated and given me advice that has helped me throughout my time in the organization. Their presence has helped the local committee in many ways from speaking at events to helping with review boards, but I feel like the alumni in the GTA are still not being utilized to their full potential.

Quarterly Newsletter

My initiatives for the year are establishing a mentorship program for the portfolios in the LC, having more professional development talks where alumni come in and teach professional skills, creating a fund-raiser for outgoing exchange for those who cannot afford it, and setting up monthly alumni gatherings in the GTA. The mentorship program is set up so every two months the alumni overseeing the portfolio sits in on the meeting and gives advice on the planning and initiatives of the portfolio. This would help the newer members not repeat things that failed in the past and give fresh insight due to their experience. The professional development talks will happen quarterly. Alumni from various professions will come in and teach skills to develop our members and give them the soft skills necessary

April 2011

to help them transition from university to the workplace. The GTA fund-raiser is an initiative that will most likely be done in the fall where hopefully the LC’s in the Toronto area collaborate and can get alumni to support exchange by donating to hopefully give the EP’s without the financial means to go on a life changing global exchange with AIESEC. The monthly alumni gathering is to constantly get alumni in contact with members and engage them instead of blindly calling or emailing them asking for favours. By the end of my term I hope to establish a healthy engaged alumni base in the GTA, a mentorship program for the LC, and a strong alumni relations portfolio structure that will help whoever comes after me.

I am an individual who strives for success, enjoys luxury, and never takes no for an answer. I enjoy studying law and business and I hope to attend law school in the near future. I am a very nice person and very easy to get along with. The best part of joining AIESEC is the leadership opportunities, whether its in the local committee or on exchange in another country. What I love most AIESEC is that there is never a dull moment. You constantly enjoy yourself when the time comes and you know when to get down to work. AIESEC is full of opportunities for you to discover.

Throughout the past terms, the corporate relations portfolio has seen much success. We have developed and created a local committee wide marketing culture. The corporate relations team integrates the entire LC in the sales process and collaborates together to achieve effective results. Corporate Relations developed the Inter Organization Alliance Program (IOA) which allows AIESEC Ryerson to work with non profit organizations in order to raise interns. The interns would then be sponsored by a corporate company due to the fact that the non profit cannot do so themselves. This program expands the reach of AIESEC Ryerson and allows us to target a wider range of businesses and organizations.

AIESEC Ryerson has been very successful this year in terms of marketing competitions with other Canadian local committees. We won the last TNACC Marketing Blitz and currently focusing on the second TNACC blitz and hope to be victorious again. Throughout the last TNACC Blitz that we have won, AIESEC Ryerson booked an outstanding number of 43 meetings. Currently, corporate relations are negotiating with the Toronto Board of Trade to achieve membership status in order for the LC to have access to local conferences. This will engage networking and it will be excellent to market AIESEC and yourself as well. Sponsors for World Cafe Event March 2011:

AIESEC Ryerson has raised 2 interns in the 2011-2012 term as of this moment.

• Wal-mart - Pop and water

These companies include:

• St. Louis - Chicken wings

• Organics 4 Orphans

• Tim Horton’s - Coffee

• Citrn Canada

For TN raising effort, we are currently targeting our warm contacts and alumni in order to leverage marketing meetings. Corporate Relations and other local committee members attend conferences, specifically through the Toronto Board of Trade. TN raising efforts this term involve intense personal confrontation and networking.

Currently working on a proposal for sponsorship for this nonprofit organization. Proposal will outline company information, AIESEC detailed process of the global internship program, community investment model analysis, corporate benefits, AIESEC partners, sponsorship exposure and costs associated with request. Currently AIESEC Ryerson is constantly attending marketing meetings.

• Starbucks - Coffee

CR also attends varies training sessions hosted by other universities such as York and University of Toronto.

AIESEC is so much, to so many different people. For me, AIESEC has given me opportunities to travel across Canada, meet students from all across the globe with their own AIESEC experiences, and also develop skills, I never knew I had. I’ve been given the opportunity to travel to Winnipeg, Quebec City, Guelph, Edmonton, Ottawa & Montreal for National and Regional conferences I never dreamed I would travel to, while still in school. The ability to meet so many different people and listen to their stories of where they’ve been, and things they’ve accomplished has inspired me to take an active role in providing students the same opportunities I have been fortunate enough to undertake. Through taking an active role in AIESEC as VP Com I’ve gotten to build new skills through the creation of videos for promotions and learning how to Network with business professionals. In AIESEC, as cheesy as this may sound, “AIESEC is the platform that allows you to be the best you can be”. By the end of my term as VP Com, I want AIESEC to be known across all school faculties, so that if you ask any student what AIESEC is, they’ll answer, “It’s the International student group that allows you to gain leadership skills, and work abroad in any of the 110 countries their located in”. GO COMM GO!!!

Communications has started promoting the AIESEC brand across Ryerson. Our promotions started with TV ads on the campus screens around Ryerson, thank you to Jamie, our V.P, for putting the ad together. There have also been classroom presentations held by members of the communication and outgoing exchange portfolio. We have targeted many of the faculty with the assistant of students from many faculties. AIESEC Ryerson is still progressing to reach outside of the Business Management Program and there will be more initiatives to get new members from faculties outside of Ryerson.

On that note, we would like to congratulate Patricia Nip for being our new Director of Media Outreach. She will be taking over the initiatives planned to integrate AIESEC Ryerson into the University by aligning with other student groups and helping provide a platform to build and spread the AIESEC brand across campus. In addition, we have also divided the communications portfolio into the Internal, External and the Creative Media teams. The introduction of the newsletter is a great stepping stone for AIESEC Ryerson to get the members and non-members involved and understanding the process.

Message from Director of Internal Communications: I would like to thank all my colleagues for all their help into making AIESEC Ryerson’s very first newsletter a great success! 27
