ABOUT AIESEC
50, 000 Students and recent graduates part of the global network Active in over 1,600 universities across 113 countries and territories 10,000 leadership opportunities and 10,000 global internships annually Network of 1,000,000 alumni worldwide including heads of state and prominent leaders
A
IESEC is the largest student-run organization in the world. We offer unmatched opportunities to ambitious students ready for a challenge in an exciting and dynamic environment through two exchange programs; the Global Internship Program and the Global Community Development Program. These programs send current AIESEC members abroad on paid work internships or volunteer opportunies as well as allows international interns the opportunity to work in Vancouver. As a student-run organization, AIESEC is also an international platform for young people to explore and develop their leadership potential to make a positive impact on society. Each university chapter is entirely student-run and, much like a small company, members are responsible for managing and maintaining the main operations of the organization. The functional work within each local chapter combined with the various exchange opportunities available makes AIESEC an excellent opportunity for students to break out of the classroom walls and gain international experience complementing their degree.
4
Activating Leadership We lead by example and inspire leadership through our activities. We take full responsibility for developing the leadership potential of our members.
Living Diversity We seek to learn from the different ways of life and opinions represented in our multicultural environment. We respect and actively encourage the contribution of every individual.
Striving for Excellence We aim to deliver the highest quality performance in everything we do. Through creativity and innovation we seek to continuously improve.
Demonstrating Integrity We are consistent and transparent in our decisions and actions. We fulfil our commitments and conduct ourselves in a way that is true to our ideals.
Enjoying Participation We create a dynamic environment by encouraging the active and enthusiastic participation of our members who enjoy being involved in AIESEC.
Acting Sustainably We act in a way that is sustainable for our organisation and society. Our decisions take into consideration the needs of future generations.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE AIESEC SFU President’s Message 2012
T
here is a single phrase that can be used to summarize the year – breaking the mold. AIESEC SFU, as a Local Committee, has steadily been growing and achieving many accomplishments in recent years. We went into the year having all the ingredients required to have another successful year, and potentially taking the Local Committee to greater heights – a stable foundation and motivated members. What did we do in 2012? Shake up that foundation and challenge every single member. Over the course of the year, in the Executive Board’s shortened ten-month term, our Local Committee reached new milestones. From Colombia to Malaysia, we sent more students on life-changing internships. We learned from and discovered the cultures of our three interns. Partnerships were both strengthened and established, providing our members with more and diversified ways to develop themselves. Members, alumni, and supporters were engaged through different events, from conferences to workshops.
The year could not have been made possible without the support of many individuals. On behalf of the Local Committee, I would like to thank our Board of Advisors, alumni, our Member Committee coach, the Beedie School of Business, and our partners. Thank you!
In closing, I would like to invite you to celebrate the achievements of the year. This annual report outlines From a personal perspective, I am most proud of our our Local Committee’s story, one-of-a-kind to AIESEC. members. Each possesses unique traits that truly make them AIESECers. Every person, with their own experiences and contribution, made up the community of AIESEC SFU. It is a distinctive culture of support and collaboration, combined with refusing to let one Christina Buiza Local Committee President 2012 another achieve anything less than exception.

OUTGOING EXCHANGE
T

“We are working towards establishing ourselves as the premiere exchange organization at Simon Fraser University.”
Exchange Participants sending 18 students abroad for both internship and volunteer opportunities -- That’s a 225% increase since 2011! In addition, our matching rate increased from 60% to 100% within the first Quarter and has been maintained throughout the year. Our first highlight of the year was seeing two Exchange Participants going on their second internships almost immediately after returning from their first. Our second highlight of the year was having four members of the 2012 Executive Board of AIESEC SFU pass through their own Exchange Review Boards. One of whom is currently interning at an NGO in Torino, Italy.
The Outgoing Exchange portfolio started 2012 with a bang. Two months into the year, we won the national Matching Blitz with nine Exchange Participants sent on an internship abroad. This was the first time AIESEC Simon Fraser University gained national recognition for its Outgoing Exchange efforts. In 2012, the Outgoing Exchange portfolio surpassed historical numbers! As we see our exchange numbers increase, we hope to sustain our high level of service and increase our credibility within Vancouver’s community. I
n 2011, Incoming Exchange separated from the Corporate Relations team to become a portfolio of its own. The focus of this portfolio has been to work together with Corporate Relations to boost sales activity as well as to deliver the best possible experiences to our interns while satisfying the needs of our partners.
“Throughout the year, we have focused on providing high quality and timely service.” Throughout the year, we have focused on providing high quality and timely service showcasing our ability to manage issues and problems as they surfaced. Our dedication to the experiences of not only members
of the portfolio but experiences of our Exchange Participants and Trainee Nominees is something we take pride in as we work towards providing the best possible exchange experience for students. The Incoming Exchange Scrapbook was one of the major projects initiated this year. This portfolio binder is a memory book presenting the experience, memories, and feedback from exchange participants that have come to Vancouver. One of the purposes of this scrapbook is to provide potential partner companies with examples of the types of experiences, successes, and benefits AIESEC SFU has delivered to both Exchange Participants and past Trainee Nominee takers.
AIESEC SFU INCOMING INTERNS Marwen Abid, an exchange participant from Tunisia, and Szymon Marciniewicz, an exchange participant from Poland, both started their internship at Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers in January.

CORPORATE RELATIONS
T
he Corporate Relations portfolio this year has gone through many changes in our method of sales. We have moved farther away from our dependence on cold-calling to networking and engaging with our alumni and Board of Advisors. Collectively, the team has made countless number of calls, attended more than 15 networking events and have booked 93 marketing meetings thus far. Our focus on networking has created opportunities for us to create partnerships within our business community.
“We have moved farther away from our dependence on cold-calling to networking and engaging with our alumni and Board of Advisors. During the summer semester, we started partnering up with conferences and, aside from generating sales leads, we have increased the external presence of AIESEC through special mentions during attended events. Our longstanding partnership with BCTIA has given us the opportunity to attend a variety of conferences including Techbrew, TechStampede and the TIA Awards subsequently helping us generate more than 20 leads. In fostering a sales culture, we started delivering a Local Sales Program to the Alumni Relations and Communications portfolio and the Conference Organizing Committees to increase the collaboration as well as sales knowledge. This year alone, we have delivered five sales programs to gauge interest in promoting the Global Internship Program.

Marketing CultuRE STRATEGY Our strategy for building a marketing culture has started off in training members outside of Corporate Relations. AIESEC SFU created a sales program that invited members from the Organizing Committee, Communications and Alumni Relations. Since January 2012, we have hosted 5 sales programs. Aside from Corporate Relations members, we have engaged 20% of the membership in fostering a marketing culture by providing them with sales training. Customer Relationship Management Outside of taking an intern, we want to engage companies as much as possible. Relationships and leads are gained through networking events, depending on the size of the event, each member can book at least 2 meetings per event. In addition to findingTraineeship Nominees, we have created partnerships with Sun Life, Wavefront, Launch Academy, and Enterprise Holdings for the purposes of workshops, external awareness, and sponsorship. best case practice Corporate Relations had the opportunity to partner up with large-scale business conferences that were hosted in Vancouver. These partnerships have enabled us free admission and increased awareness of AIESEC during the conference through blog posts and volunteer recognition. Thus far, we have created three conference partnerships with GROW 2012, Merging Media Conference, and the Top Employer Summit. From these conference partnerships, we have attended 17 marketing meetings.

On July 14, we hosted the first-ever Alumni Barbecue at Deer Lake Park Burnaby. We had over 40 members attend, including 15 alumni and externals. This event was held as a fundraiser for the Western Regional and Coastal Conferences. At the end of the day, we raised $750.00 from ticket sales, raffle and 50/50 games.
AlumNight 2012 Co-hosted by UBC on November 14, AlumNight 2012 proved to be a success! A record 27 SFU and UBC alumni graced the event which was aimed towards engaging AIESEC members old and new. Alumni were able to meet our current members as well as reconnect and relive memories with fellow alumni.
Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers With the hard work and dedication of the Corporate Relations and Incoming Exchange Portfolios, we were able to resign a Trainee Nominee through an alumnus, Brad Cumiskey, the Internet Marketing Manager at Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers.
Western Regional and Coastal Conference Having the Beedie School of Business be a platinum sponsor for our conferences was made possible by Rosanne Ng, the Manager of Student Engagement and Recruitment, who was also the Local Committee President of AIESEC SFU from 2004-2005. During the Western Regional Conference banquet in October, we had 12 alumni come and see our local committee win the Spirit Keg!

FINANCE
T
he Finance portfolio is responsible for the yearly financial management and long-term financial planning of the Local Committee. This includes completing mandatory minimum standards submissions to AIESEC Canada, financial reporting, budgeting and analysis, and administrative policies.
Projects and Accomplishments
One accomplishment of the Finance portfolio in 2012 was granting online access to documents required for audit and financial statement preparations. In doing so, we have made information more accessible to members of the portfolio, as well as AIESEC Canada’s internal audit team. We have also developed an easier transition system minimizing the risk of lost documents. Additionally, our Finance page on the internal AIESEC database, myAIESEC.net, was created this year making AIESEC SFU one of only two AIESEC Local Committees in Canada who have a finance page in the internal database. At the beginning of the year, we implemented a new accounting system from Simply Accounting to Wave Accounting, which has allowed us to update our financial reports and improve our budget analysis system. A dashboard creation system was also created for quick comparisons and ROI reports. Conference Subsidization • $4527.63 was subsidized this year • $6360 is to be subsidized in the remaining year • 349% subsidization increase (at the end of 2012) Due to a shortened financial year, there were three fewer months than the last. The Finance portfolio has helped ease the financial burden of AIESEC SFU members going to various conferences including the National President’s Meeting, Strat-Tri Congress, Ontario and Atlantic Regional Conference, and JUMP: Central American South Leadership Conference in Costa Rica. A break-even budgeting system was utilized from making a profit to reinvesting all revenues back into membership. Financial Statistics • 17 months in financial reserves, assuming $1000 in expenses every month meaning AIESEC SFU can survive and remain sustainable • 17 months with current activity assuming that no revenue is made in those months • Growth in operational revenue (44.8%) compared to previous year (YTD) numbers • Total revenue YTD is $13,147.62, compared to $9082.10 in the previous year Financial Data: Program Revenue Measure Months in Financial Reserves Total Revenue Number of quarter’s passed minimum standards SoA debt amount Total Program Revenue Profit YTD

COMMUNICATIONS
CAMPUS RELATIONS
A
IESEC SFU was able to create a stronger brand presence on campus this year. Through targeted and cohesive marketing campaigns, we were able to build positive awareness of both the AIESEC organization and the programs we offer students. We utilized many strategies including holding information sessions, print advertising, creating a new banner, and word of mouth to spread awareness among the SFU community. Through the techniques mentioned, the Communications portfolio has been able to improve the status of AIESEC as the premiere organization for international exchange and leadership opportunities.
CHECKPOINTS - PUBLIC RELATIONS CAMPAIGN
This year we established a Public Relations campaign focused on highlighting the experiences of our stakeholders, in particular, our exchange participants and leaders. We established videos and posters to showcase their stories and the content is now being used not only at AIESEC SFU, but across Canada to promote our programs at information sessions and through social media.
ONLINE MEDIA
Promoting AIESEC on our social media platforms has been very effective when promoting our exchange programs and partnering with externals. We established marketing campaigns on Facebook and Twitter to engage audiences, and had endless retweets and mentions throughout the year.

RECRUITMENT ORGANIZING COMMITTEE FALL 2012 RECRUITMENT Our Local Committee has gone through several changes in our recruitment processes, most prominently in our Fall 2012 Recruitment period. Our interview process was cut down and altered as we moved from one-on-one interviews to a larger scale process of group interviews. This not only allowed us to better identify well-rounded ‘AIESEC’ quality members but also sped up the recruitment process allowing us to spend more time focusing on our core work. It is through our new Assessment Centre process that members go through activities that represent each portfolio, as assessed on their skills, and are then allocated to portfolios based on this information.
member development campus development and outreach Throughout this past year, AIESEC SFU has been able to make a few partnerships with other clubs and organizations, both on campus and externally, to host various events. Among many, the most notable events were held in partnership with SFU Global Agents during their Social Entrepreneurship Challenge and the Burnaby Mountain Toastmasters during a workshop held on the topic of public speaking. The Member Development Committee is in charge of organizing the monthy General Assemblies, creating activities and opportunities for members to grow, and ensuring that members are consistently engaged by encouraging cross-functional collaboration and interaction.
EVENTS MEMBERS APPRECIATION BANQUET This year, the Talent Management portfolio decided to host a year-end banquet to formally recognize the efforts of the members of our local committee and their consistent dedication throughout the year and past semester. The banquet, held at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts Bistro 101 at Granville Island, allowed members to enjoy a three-course meal while giving them the opportunity to reflect on their achievements throughout their year in AIESEC both as individuals and collectively as a Local Committee. Awards and certificates were distributed to members who have demonstrated outstanding growth and who have contributed notable work across all portfolios.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE AIESEC SFU President’s Message 2013
I
t’s incredible to be part of an organization that actively strives to create world peace. As AIESEC members, this is what we do, every single day. With every exchange participant we send abroad, every intern that is brought into Canada to work, and with every AIESEC member that believes in the vision of developing global mindsets, we are choosing to make a positive impact on our world. Sixty-four years later, AIESEC as an entity has proven to be an organization that develops the leaders of tomorrow. I am proud to have been involved with AIESEC for the past two years. I have seen groups of students develop their personal and professional skills, invest their time and energy into something larger than themselves, and put their ideas into action in order to make their impact on the organization and the people within it. As a result, the community in which we live is also positively influenced, with globallyminded AIESEC members involving themselves in networking events and leadership conferences, and with interns who provide an international aspect to organizations in Vancouver. Alternatively, in communities abroad, we have allowed for more SFU students to work on community development projects that tackle important social issues. As well, students who have engaged themselves in work internships have brought international perspectives to the countries in which they work. AIESEC has allowed for people everywhere to break cultural barriers and to bridge the gaps across countries.
partners, Board of Advisors, faculty, alumni and all external supporters that made all the difference. We are grateful for those who challenged us, pushed us, and undoubtedly believed in our abilities to become change agents through the work that we do. I have no doubt that AIESEC SFU will only continue to accomplish more in the upcoming year of 2013. The culture that we have developed at our local committee is something to be proud and excited about. Member engagement is thriving, and the passion for AIESEC resounds in the amount of time and dedication that is put into their work. More and more members are actively living the values that we promote, and believing in the bigger picture in that we do is making a difference. We are determined to enable even more students to have incredible life experiences through our exchange programs and through activating their leadership abilities. May 2013 be another year in which AIESEC SFU will continue in our vision of striving for peace and fulfillment of humankind’s potential.
Seeing the enormous growth in this local committee, AIESEC SFU, continuously inspires me. Since its Sincerely yours, inception in 1981, we have enabled more students than ever to have quality international and leadership development experiences. Every year, we are able to grow stronger and build upon the successes of AIESECers that came before us. It is the support Tamara Hombrebueno that we had this year coming from our exchange Local Committee President 2013
