Designer & Tinkerer
Goetz Printing
Kelli Anderson is a designer and tinkerer who tries to find extraordinary possibilities for ordinary things. In 2008, she worked with the Yes Men to create and distribute a meticulously recreated copy of The New York Times—filled with articles from a progressive utopian future—for which they won the Ars Electronica Award of Distinction. In 2011, she created a paper record player that garnered major attention from numerous media outlets including NPR, Mashable, HOW Magazine, Computer Arts, Slashdot, Make, The Atlantic, Swiss Miss, Wired, the Toronto Star and Kottke. In 2012, she designed and art directed a newspaper that was on view as part of Martha Rosler’s Meta-Monumental Garage Sale at the Museum of Modern Art. Her work has been profiled, praised or featured by Wired UK, New York Magazine, Gestalten, Rockport Publishing, iDN, and Victionary and has been on view at apexart, Jen Bekman Gallery, the New York Public Library and the Museum of Modern Art. She has given talks at Webstock, Creative Mornings, TYPO and TEDx, and sometimes teaches art history at Pratt.

ISSUE No.4
As fall approaches, there’s no better place to be than 14th and U. Soon, streets will be ablaze in fall colors and neighborhood favorites will serve up seasonal dishes and hot cocktails. That’s right: Things are about to get really cozy and comfy around here. But you won’t want to settle into one place for too long — this neighborhood is buzzing with new dining spots, bars, and shops, so you’ll want to pound the pavement until you’ve seen everything 14th and U has to offer.

WHAT’S HAPPENING Need a caffeine fix? You can experience the handcrafted brews from The Wydown coffee bar (1320 U Street NW; (202) 506-2756) during a temporary pop-up shop. Soon, brothers Alex and Chad McCracken will move their operation into a permanent space inside the Louis at 14th building. Just in time for the chilly, blustery nights of winter, Ghibellina (1610 14th Street NW; (202) 803-2389) offers up hearty, rustic dishes inspired by one of the best restaurants in Florence. It’s not the first time for owners Ari Gejdenson and Ralph Lee — the pair also own Acqua Al 2, a sister restaurant to another famous Florentine outpost. For a night out that’s anything but ordinary, head to Black Whiskey (1410 14th Street NW; (202) 800-8130). Upstairs, indulge in small-batch whiskeys and carving board-style meals; in the downstairs event space, expect anything from pop-up shops and art events to fundraisers and birthday parties. Darren Norris, chef and owner of Chinatown’s Kushi, is at the helm.

IN THIS ISSUE
Just when you thought sweets couldn’t get any sweeter, along comes BakeHouse (1407 T Street NW; (202) 299-9042). Owners Niall Cooper and Lindsey Morse met in Scotland, then moved to the South Pole — yep, you read that right — where they discovered a mutual love of baking. Now, with their craft perfected, they’ve set up shop in Logan Circle and are dishing out sweet (and savory) treats and Zeke’s coffee from sun-up to well after dinner.
FA L L F O R E C A S T Even if the back-to-school days are far behind you, it’s hard to deny the urge to revamp your wardrobe every fall. But sometimes you need a bit of expert guidance to make sure your sartorial choices are sound. To get you on the right track for the season, we enlisted 14th and U’s coolest shopkeepers to show us their ideal outfits for the cooler days ahead.
