PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Place of Reporting
Members, advocates, supporters and friends of the Honolulu Chapter of AIGA: A lot has happened in design since the last 5-O show was held two short years ago. On the cusp of our chapter’s 30th year as an organized professional community, we are witnessing the dawn of the Design
Age. Around the world, designers are shaping experiences for more audiences in more places than ever before. Businesses and other endeavors that historically confined designers to the flanks are beginning
to see us at the helm. Conversations about process, communication, and user experience are happening
sooner, and to greater effect.
Here, in the center of the Pacific Ocean, we still have a long way to go and many obstacles in our path. But we are up for the task. Designers, step forward. Wear your profession like a badge of honor. The
x-acto blade represents your years of combat. The spinning beach ball represents your persistence under
the crushing threat of defeat. The exclamation points indicate victory and your promotion in rank or,
at least, respect. Congratulations.
And to our Admirals of Advocacy, we thank you for believing in the potential of our creative community. We take this opportunity to salute you for your unwavering support for our citizen army. We could not prevail without you.
All present, let us wave this flag colored Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, Red, Green and Blue. Let us celebrate the greatness that is our task: Good Design.
Salute,
Angelica Rabang, President of AIGA Honolulu

Founded in 1914 as the American Institute of Graphic Arts, AIGA remains the
oldest and largest professional membership organization for design and is now known simply as “AIGA, the Professional Association for Design.” AIGA Honolulu is
Hawaii’s chapter of the international AIGA, working to inform, inspire, and support the local design community.
The Honolulu chapter created the 5-O show 12 years ago to recognize and celebrate design in Hawaii, and to give local businesses an opportunity to realize the quality
and expertise that exists in our industry. We are proud of this competition. Last year
one of our 5-O judges, Sean Adams, told us “All the other chapters say, ‘We want our
competition to be like the 5-O.’”
If 5-O is your first exposure to AIGA Honolulu, we encourage you to visit our web
site, sign up for e-mails and like us on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram so you can
get all our announcements about events and other opportunities.

DESCRIPTION Breadshop is a craft bakery located in Honolulu owned and operated by Christopher Sy, an artisanal bread maker who bakes for local individuals and restaurants that value the quality of fresh, regional food. The concept is based on the idea of “terroir” which defines how the geography and climate affects locally produced wine, coffee, tea, or bread. The mark is a series of bread loaves broken in half to form a monogram, referencing fellowship through “breaking bread.”

The pages are designed to fold out (expand and contract) from 4x4in size to a 8x8in to embody the concept of mechanical reproductions ability to expand and contract notions of time and space. Keeping with this theme, the book can be compacted into a small square for the pages to be viewed individually or pulled out into a long form to view altogether. The book was printed at UHM and carefully folded and constructed by hand.
