Your Wish is Granted Chia-Jung Chuang is a board certificated plastic surgeon in Taiwan. In 2006, he established his own private practice clinic – WiSH Aesthetic Surgery Clinic and expanded to a larger clinic site in 2015. We speak to Dr Chuang to find out more about his firm.

Welcome to the 2016 Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Awards The healthcare and pharmaceuticals industry is as diverse as the individuals and organisations operating within it, and as such documenting and rewarding those who are striving to deliver excellence is a daunting task. Best for DNA, Alcohol & Drug Testing - UK

Alpha Biolaboratories (AlphaBiolabs) offer a full range of testing services with a focus on quality. We invited Rachel Davenport to learn more about the firm and the exemplary work it undertakes.

AlphaBiolabs is a company based in Warrington, Cheshire specialising in DNA, drug and alcohol testing to the legal fraternity, members of the public, companies requiring workplace drug and alcohol testing for their employees and TV programmes including The Jeremy Kyle Show. Rachel outlines the firm’s main focuses and how it aims to provide faster and more efficient testing than any other company on the market. “Here at AlphaBiolabs we undertake all of the analysis in our onsite laboratories which means that we do not deal with resellers or send samples abroad for analysis and can therefore provide results quicker than any other laboratory using our streamlined and efficient processes. “This is of vital importance as it is our focus to provide a fast and accurate service to the consumer, as experience has shown us that all of our customers require their results as soon as possible for a variety of reasons. Members of the public who require ‘peace of mind’ DNA testing collect their own samples and once we receive their swabs we are able to provide a next day turnaround as standard. This allows the test participants to receive their results by email soon after the analytical process is complete which helps to reduce their anxiety as the sensitivity and implications of the test results can have a significant impact on their lives. “Every day the Legal Fraternity, CSA, Home Office, Local Authorities, and Family Courts and UK Visas and Immigration rely on our urgent service to enable critical information regarding the relatedness of a child or children to be resolved. Our testing can meet strict court deadlines at an affordable price and as we can provide such a prompt and unparalleled service our customers will use our service more frequently which in turn increases repeat business. “We also provide a same-day drug confirmation service. The current industry standard for drug confirmation when an employee has failed an on-site drugs screen or a laboratory drugs screen is five working days. This significant time delay promotes stress and anxiety for the employee and increases the cost and disruption for the company requesting the test.”

Working in such a dynamic and important industry the firm has to work hard to stay ahead of emerging developments and remain relevant, as Rachel explains. “The Workplace testing market is fluid and dynamic and recent developments within the industry have included moving away from testing urine to testing oral fluids for the convenience and simplicity of collecting and testing the samples, which is much less intrusive. AlphaBiolabs reacted immediately and we are now in the final stages of developing and introducing our own oral fluid kits. “Additionally, we are constantly striving to stay ahead of industry developments by reviewing the market and listening to consumer requirements. Our innovations and developments involve pushing the boundaries of science, which requires significant investment in equipment and staff. “Overall our most significant breakthrough in recent years has been to provide ‘same day’ DNA results which is a ‘world first’ innovative achievement and no other DNA laboratory can currently match this provision. We have developed a laboratory process which significantly reduces the cost and shortens the length of time it takes to analyse the samples and provide results for either a legally defensible test or a test for information purposes only.” Looking to the future, Rachel is keen to express her excitement at the opportunities the firm will encounter. “The future for the company looks very positive and we are constantly looking to expand into new areas as market forces dictate. Our same day DNA testing will become standard and the drug testing market with the analysis of New Psychoactive Substances (Legal Highs) is a challenge for the future which we look forward to overcoming.”

Best Specialty Alzheimer’s & Nursing Care Home - Buckinghamshire

AVONDALE AYLESBURY A PORTHAVEN CARE HOME

Porthaven’s Avondale Care Home in Aylesbury is a dedicated specialist care home. We invited the home’s Manager, Shaun Canavan, to talk us through Avondale and the care it offers. Porthaven’s Avondale Care Home in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire is delighted to have been awarded the title of ‘Speciality Alzheimer’s & Nursing Care Home – Buckinghamshire’ in the Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Awards 2016, as voted by the readers of Global Health and Pharma magazine. These awards are given to individuals, departments and organisations that demonstrate excellence and dedication within the competitive and demanding healthcare industry. It adds to Avondales’ previous awards that include NAPA best care home for activity provision in 2012 and Home Manager of the Year 2014, along with reaching the finals in the 2015 Care Awards Dignity in Care category. Shaun Canavan, Home Manager at Avondale said, ‘We’re always delighted when we are nominated, or win awards but I’m particularly proud to receive such a prestigious and popular award as this says so much about the care we deliver here. My team are highly skilled, but moreover, they are passionate about ensuring each and every one of our residents receives the very best care. Each individual team member has a very strong empathetic connection with our residents and a genuine desire to work in the care industry and I couldn’t be prouder that their hard work and dedication has produced this award.’ Avondale is within a tranquil setting near the Chiltern Hills but also close to the busy, thriving market town of Aylesbury. It offers full-time residency or respite care for anyone needing nursing, dementia or personal care and is perfectly equipped to support and assist residents as and when their needs may change. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped and manicured gardens, Avondale provides elegant and spacious accommodation throughout. The outdoor space is particularly pleasant for exercise, walking, the delights of afternoon tea and even for gardening, if residents choose to do so. So who are Porthaven? As one of the leading providers of care in the country, they currently run eight homes, with more opening soon. Their name is synonymous with quality, thoughtfulness and professionalism - the Porthaven ethos is strong and straightforward: they wish to ensure that anyone who chooses to live in one of their homes will predominantly ‘live well in their care’. Throughout Avondale, there is a friendly sense of community and with this in mind, there are a variety of

welcoming communal areas in which to relax and make friends, small restaurant areas including a smart private dining room for special family celebrations, a fully equipped gym, library and activities room. Avondale is very much a place to continue to enjoy hobbies, or even take up new ones. The smaller dining areas are thoughtfully designed to accommodate varying degrees of sociability from residents on a day to day basis. As testimony to the quality service provided, personal culinary favourites from a daily-changing menu are remembered and served whenever possible for each and every resident. Porthaven chefs use only fresh and seasonal produce, to optimise good nutrition. The food is delicious and beautifully presented, with wine if desired supplied by Berry Brothers, all part of the ‘live well’ ethos. Another aspect of life at a Porthaven home is that a specialist Leisure and Wellness coordinator plans a stimulating variety of optional activities utilising the UK’s first, and award-winning Leisure and Wellness Framework. This framework was developed to ensure that activities provided within the care home setting were always beneficial to the health and mental wellbeing of their residents. It offers carefully considered choices so that there is something to suit everyone and at Avondale this currently includes yoga, Pilates, cinema afternoons and music therapy. The intention is to provide a stimulating, relaxing and therapeutic programme of events and activities, all created in regular consultation with residents and their families. Avondale has a strong reputation for quality care and prides itself on a very open relationship with the local community. It is common place to find them involved in schemes and initiatives focused around improving quality of care, both inside their home and outside. Recently, Avondale joined together with Health Education England to produce a short film called Fred’s Story. This thought-provoking film by Health Education England in the Thames Valley was aimed at healthcare professionals, emergency services, carers and health and social care staff, to raise awareness of the issues faced by a person with dementia who may wander from their care setting including their own home. Looking to the future, they are soon to work with Thames Valley Police in a new initiative aimed at improving response times in finding missing persons with dementia.

Best Care Management Software Provider & Most Innovative Healthcare Software Solution: TruCare®

Casenet® provides a comprehensive suite of extensible, enterprise population health and care management solutions that improve care coordination and the quality and delivery of care. We speak to Peter Masanotti, CEO, about the solutions that they provide. The Casenet enterprise population health and care management solution, TruCare®, supports both small clients and large enterprise customers that require tremendous scalability, have many lines of business, and require comprehensive configuration for each targeted member population. “The TruCare platform supports some of the highest acuity patients in the industry and many of the most diverse organizations. The platform flexibly manages managed care, government-sponsored, Medicaid, Medicare and commercial organizations as well as carve-outs, TPAs, ACOs and providers.” “People are at the heart of all healthcare delivery; both those receiving care and those providing care. In 2002, Casenet was founded to improve the experiences of all people giving and receiving care, and to deliver on the promise that better coordination of care will lead to better health outcomes. Casenet delivers enterprise population health and care management solutions to managed care and payer organizations. The Casenet platform supports the care coordination for more than 40 health plans including one in Spain and over 30M patients”. We asked Peter about the overall mission of Casenet, and he replied that they envision helping all individuals to achieve maximum health and appropriately coordinated health management. “Our mission is to provide our clients with better health outcomes, at lower costs. Casenet is able to deliver on this mission by focusing on individuals, total health, and integrated care. Over the past 14 years, Casenet’s dedicated team of healthcare leaders, nurses and technologists have been building out its vision to enable collaborative health management, and aiding those who are driving the care process forward to have the ability to deliver the highest quality care, at the best value. “With a single platform for utilization, case and disease management, Casenet delivers unmatched flexibility to coordinate and manage population health, wellness and quality programs. The ability for non-medical services, such as custodial care and transportation, to be combined with behavioural and medical services enables our clients to create a single, complete and actionable view of each patient”.

Peter states that his firm is unique due to their TruCare platform. This is an innovative, enterprise-level, highly scalable and interoperable member-centered population health and care management solution. “TruCare offers robust system integration, portability, versatile functionality and high security. TruCare enables teams to better coordinate, collaborate and communicate, which decreases time to intervention, improves patient engagement and outcomes, increases efficiency and reduces costs. The results are lower healthcare costs and healthier member populations and citizens. “The release of TruCare 6.2 proactively combines client feedback, regulatory requirements and market demands, to deliver an even more powerfully efficient care management platform. TruCare 6.2 expands and improves upon existing functionality, while also introducing new features. New capabilities include configurable programs that automate adherence to contractual requirements, smart scheduling, localisation support for international lines of business, and a new Care Opportunities module for making third-party analytics data actionable within TruCare. We have also partnered to deliver real-time analytics integration and enhanced clinical interoperability through HL7 ADT integration. “The Casenet TruCare platform has been designed to easily integrate with other systems including EMRs, HIEs, predictive modeling and other analytic tools, mobile monitoring devices and collaborative care partner systems; offering an unparalleled intersection of clinical content, business rules and workflow that makes TruCare unique in the population health and care management market today. “One of the most significant breakthroughs of this platform is its ability to segment members by line of business, government program, product, group, state, country, population or other variable. This capability, called Differential Care Management™ (DCM), is a core function of the TruCare infrastructure. DCM provides organizations with the ability to segment populations to align with desired population health management programs. Each segmented population can have totally different business rules, workflows, artifacts and security. The TruCare Differential Care

Management framework and client-defined patient populations provide the ability to synchronize business needs, patient expectations and regulatory requirements. This capability, along with scalability and ease of implementation and integration, allows Casenet to maintain a 93% customer satisfaction rating and a 99% on time, on-budget implementation success rate, which is unmatched in our industry. “Casenet has a three-pronged approach to staying in the forefront of emerging industry developments. First, we work closely with our clients to be sure we anticipate, understand and meet their needs. The voice of our customer plays a significant role in the long-term TruCare roadmap and overall product evolution. In this way, our clients help guide the development of TruCare based on their industry experiences, their pain-points and their needs, ensuring that our system evolution keeps pace with the healthcare market. “Secondly, we continually monitor changes in our industry and new trends, so that our product roadmaps look ahead to what is coming next. Thirdly, we investigate, test and incorporate new technologies into our solutions to ensure they remain cutting edge. “In the current healthcare continuum, payers and providers together have two overwhelming missions: one is to address the overall wellness of the population, and the second is to manage individuals in high acuity populations, where the majority of the costs occur. The Casenet TruCare platform helps our clients achieve their missions”. Peter is very excited about the future for Casenet, as is the rest of the Casenet team. “The last year has been highlighted by international expansion, client awards and industry-leading implementation delivery. We intend to leverage this momentum to further our position as the foremost population health management solutions leader into 2017 and beyond.”

Most Advanced Independent Ophthalmic Opticians - London & Award for Excellence for Glaucoma Awareness Initiatives - UK

City Eyes Ophthalmic Opticians are a London based exclusive Ophthalmic Optician/Optometry Clinic. Established almost 30 years ago, they offer a wide range of treatments and therapies, including their unique Ortho K lenses. We talk to founder Charles Babumba about the business. When asked about his main aims, Charles states that City Eyes Ophthalmic Opticians are focussed on preventative eye health, and of the treatment and management of various eye conditions. They also aim to be able to design and supply bespoke contact lenses to correct and control myopia growth in children and adults. “Myopia is one of the biggest causes of unnecessary blindness, and this is something that we are passionate about treating. We want to be able to provide treatment for this condition to as many people as possible; this is one of the biggest projects that we currently have lined up, to make treatment for this condition as widely available as we can. “We have a lot of ambition in this area, and hope in the future that we may be able to team up with more researchers in our efforts to treat this condition – hopefully achieving this research on a global scale”. As a company, City Eyes are very concerned with controlling the rapid increase of short sightedness, and it is from this that the company’s speciality treatment Ortho K was born. Perhaps the most unique thing offered by City Eyes Ophthalmic Opticians is their Orthokeratology vision therapy, a safe alternative to laser eye surgery. Charles describes Ortho K lenses as the “baby” of the company, and it is easy to see why. The lenses provided as part of the Ortho K treatment are so innovative that they have been feature on TV, where Charles was interviewed about the unique treatment. “Ortho K is our speciality. Ortho K overnight lenses correct vision without the need for contact lenses during the day. This is made possible by a specially designed Ortho K contact lens that reverses the power of the cornea at the front of the eye during overnight wear. Once the full effect of the Ortho K process has taken place the eye is effectively ‘normal’ and can see clearly during the day. Once a client stops wearing Ortho K lenses the eye goes back to normal, making them a truly great and risk free alternative to laser eye surgery.

“We’re using these lenses to make life better for our clients. Ortho K means that suitable candidates no longer have to wear contact lenses during the day, which is particularly useful for those who have found that contact lenses do not suit their everyday lifestyle. It is also a great alternative for people who have considered refractive surgery but are concerned by the risks involved in surgery”. However, just because Ortho K is the speciality of City Eyes, this does not mean that they focus solely on this. They also pride themselves on supplying a wide range of fashionable spectacle frames and sunglasses, pre-laser surgery consultations, dyslexia, computer vision and vision therapy treatment, bespoke contact lens designs for myopia control, Keratoconus and unusual prescriptions and bespoke spectacle frame designs. They also offer comprehensive treatments for Dry Eye Syndrome. Charles says that modern life has caused a large rise in the number of people seeking treatment for this syndrome, as they are finding it is affecting their livelihood to an unacceptable level. City Eyes offer a wide range of treatments for this, ranging from eye drops to personalised treatment from one of their optometrists to help clients manage this condition. When asked about the greatest challenge that his company faces, Charles believes that further marketing is the answer. “One of the greatest challenges that we face as a company is getting our message out. We want people to be able to find out about the unique treatments that we offer, but sometimes the specialist nature of these treatments means that people do not even know they exist. Most of our clientele are sourced through referrals and recommendations, which whilst great for our reputation, does mean that we sometimes feel like we miss people who may find our help beneficial. Charles is very excited about the future of City Eyes. “We always try to stay at the forefront of our industry by thinking of the next thing; we do not believe in

waiting for developments to come to us. We refuse to stand still, and keep progressing and furthering ourselves as much as we can. To do this, we regularly attend lectures and seminars across the UK, USA and Europe. Currently, we are working with researchers in Germany on an exciting project concerned with genetic eye conditions, and we are encouraged by the results this is currently yielding.

Most Dynamic Medical Education Agency 2016 - UK

Iceberg Medical Ltd are a Medical Communications Agency and work with Pharmaceutical Companies to undertake all types of work, including digital, print and meetings programmes. We speak to Asad Raja and Briony Ashcroft to find out more about the different types of work the company undertakes. The focus of Iceberg Medical Ltd is to help their clients engage with their customers to help improve patient outcomes. Asad believes that the main strength of the company lies in the highly skilled and qualified staff who have the customer at the centre of everything that they do. “One of our main strengths is our medical education through all digital platforms: websites, applications and bespoke on-line tools for HCPs. We also specialise in standalone medical education meetings and symposia. Our most recent developments include interactive case studies, which have been developed in a digital format that allow sales people and healthcare professionals alike to engage with the case studies in a way they have not been able to previously. The patients’ stories and the perspective of the treating physician were brought to life, to capture the journeys made by the patients with the aim of portraying not only the clinical benefits of treatment, but also the positive lifestyle changes that the patients and their families experienced. “My own history involves a significant background in medical sales. I started in this sector in 1996, and worked for 6 years in a sales role before moving into a senior marketing role. I then moved onto another agency for roughly a year and a half, before starting my own business in 2008. I have first-hand experience of how much our products can offer people working in this department. “We’re a dynamic, dedicated and hard-working team, and we like to build a relationship with our clients; for us, customer focus is key. As well as keeping audiences interested in what they see, we try to mobilise them to become true advocates of the brands that we have been entrusted to work with. We have a strong strategic and creative arm to the agency, producing innovative and exciting ideas. “Our staff are very qualified and experienced; some have a highly scientific background and some have worked across a breadth of marketing sectors, so we have a nice balance of experience amongst us. We enjoy a very friendly working environment. We all work together – as a team – with each one of us contributing via their unique skill set. This has resulted in a

culture of trust and mutual respect. Each of us has a life at work with a separate life at home, and we do all we can to recognise and support this.” We asked Briony about recent developments within the firm, and asked whether she would be willing to give us any details of these. “Iceberg Medical always strive to stay at the forefront of industry developments, and we manage to do this by maintaining close contact with our clients. Our clients themselves are always at the forefront of their industry, so by working closely with them we can learn a lot, and we can also have a significant impact in terms of how they should approach a project. “We are continuing to work on providing tools for HCPs to engage with patients. We cannot be specific due to confidentiality, but one of our most successful projects involves educating patients on possible treatment outcomes using clinical data, which has supported HCPs in conversations with their patients on compliance with their medication, with the aim of ultimately improving patient outcomes through education. “The change in the ABPI code has been the most recent development to affect our clients and day to day practice. We have to adapt our ideas quickly and move with foresight. Tighter restrictions on the Code of Practice are some of the biggest hurdles that our clients have to overcome on a day to day basis. This means that marketing activities for some of our clients becomes more limited. We respect that, but the gap between general marketing and pharmaceutical marketing continues to grow. Our clients also face the struggle to get funding for their drugs; the NHS is not a bottomless pit, and it has been well noted how much of an issue money is at the moment, so our clients have to make sure that their medicines remain cost efficient. “The most significant challenge that we face in terms of us as an agency is competing with bigger agencies, the agencies based in and around central London. However, we hope that our proven track record and the high praise given via our customer testimonials makes us stand out from larger competitors.”

14 | ghp Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Awards 2016

When asked about their plans for the future, Asad and Briony replied that expansion is their main aim. “We plan to expand much further as an agency and our focus will remain on a medical communications business building on the success we have had so far. We also want to make sure that we maintain our focus on our customers. We will always strive to make sure that they are fully informed about their projects, as they are the project leaders and should be able to make informed decisions without having to chase this information down. They are busy people, and we want to help make this process as easy as possible.

Ladulaas Clinical Trials, started in 2007 in order to conduct Clinical Trials on behalf of international pharma, medtech and the nutritional industry. We spoke to Katarina Blom, licenced physichian, CEO and founder, in order to find out more about the firm. Ladulaas Clinical Trials focus on new treatment for major prevalent diseases such as arthritis, asthma, COPD, diabetes and overactive bladder. Katarina explains how the firm has grown since inception. “Since the firm’s foundation we have performed nearly 80 Clinical Trials and we’ve been working with most Pharma Companies, and in more recent years also with Clinical Research Organisations (CRO). We are a privately owned independent clinic dedicated to clinical trials. “Our focus on major and prevalent diseases is mainly based upon the fact that we find our study participants by advertising. We also have our own database. “We have participated in trials concerning a new diabetic treatment that has recently come into the market; new blood thinning medicines (NOAK), replacing warfarin. We have also participated in trials involving new medication preventing patients who have previously had a myocardial infarction from having a new one, vaccines against pneumonia and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and currently in a trial concerning vaccine against Herpes Zoster (shingles), which is showing promising results so far.” Katarina outlines the firm’s mission and how it works to achieve this by focusing on supporting patients, and provides an overview of the firm’s biggest achievements. “Our mission is to take responsibility in the process of finding new and better treatment for common diseases in order to make life easier, and hopefully longer, and with better quality of life for many people. Every patient is important and we get to know them and they get to know us. Many of our study participants have formerly been blood donors, but now when they have been diagnosed with a disease they can’t give blood anymore. Now they can continue to contribute to science and healthcare by participating in a clinical trial instead. Many study participants return in new studies once the old one has finished.

“The firm’s biggest breakthrough so far was when we received the Clinical Research Site Award 2014 by INCResearch, and the year after when we received the Clinical Trial Company of the Year, Sweden 2015 by Global Health & Pharma. I believe both are in recognition for our continuous effort to take good care of our study participants and deliver good quality data within timeframes.” The digitalisation of the market is a key challenge which Katarina is trying to get the pharma companies to understand by being a frequent lecturer on the subject. “Electronic systems are used everywhere and every pharma company has their own systems. Each new trial comes with between 5-10 different electronic systems to log in to in order to survey or fill in data. We spend more time with the computers than with the study participants. We have six staff working here and with 14 studies ongoing, we spend more than 70 hours a year just changing passwords, not to mention all time we lose when the systems are down or not functioning. Standardization would be beneficent for the whole branch and is something we are hoping for”. Ultimately, Katarina believes that it is the firm’s experience which is the secret behind its success. “After almost 10 years on this market we are well known and I believe the key to our success is that we deliver what we promise with high quality. We have no problems getting new assignments from pharma companies all over the world – on the contrary we often have to say no due to lack of resources. A cure for this could be expansion in some way.”

Care Home of the Year 2016 - England

Dementia care is not only about making sure residents are warm, safe and well fed, although these are obviously a prerequisite of care. A varied life is also very important. Langley Haven care home does not plan their activity programme simply to ‘fill up the afternoons’ at the home, instead they focus on providing a wide variety of activities that many other homes would not even consider – both within the home, and in the outside world. With their own minibus, they have taken residents to an almost endless list of locations – including a night at the theatre, afternoon tea, Windsor by train, a motor museum, a picnic in the garden of a stately home and a firefighting demonstration at their local fire station – and all of that was just in the few months! The activities in the home are not just singers performing “We’ll Meet Again”. Residents get involved in many different exercises and interactions that take place at different times during a typical day at Langley Haven. Again, the list of different activities is long, and includes many different forms of arts and crafts, gardening, both indoors and out, as well novel ways to exercising both the body and the mind – another key aspect of care at Langley Haven. Birthdays are not simply a cake, a song, and candles to blow out. Recent celebrations have included Mary, who insists she is young at heart – and so celebrated a “39th” birthday party, with a Mexican theme. Resident Mr Singh’s birthday was celebrated in Bollywood fashion, with dancers who encouraged residents to try their ‘moves’. Langley Haven also invites many different types of people into the home, who speak and interact with the residents and their families. Younger people, who are especially known for having a very positive effect on dementia residents, come from local schools to the home to perform, or help the residents with arts and crafts. During July, 3 teams of teenagers were given time and space within the Home. It was part of the National Citizen Service (NCS), which is a government run initiative for 15 to 17 to year olds to gain different work and life experiences. One of the teams of youngsters produced a video where they focused on what dementia is and means, and how important it is to raise awareness, especially within younger age groups. The video includes interviews with some of the residents, happy to give their thoughts on life at Langley Haven.

They also interviewed Langley Haven’s Activities Co-Ordinator Roxana Chirita who commented, “it was really fantastic to get the residents involved, and I was really impressed. Our residents like visitors, especially the more talkative ones who always get involved. But even the ones who are more solitary and quiet wanted to interact and speak with them (the visitors) and the teenagers did a fantastic job”. Langley Haven is located in a quiet cul de sac just off the A4 in Langley, near Slough in Berkshire, and has a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for all the five of their assessment criteria – Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well Led. Their report included a statement from a resident who said, “They do what they can for you. If you want anything you just ask and they get it for you, and they do it quickly. They’ve been good to me. When I was ill, they never left my bed. The staff are very, very good.” The home is registered to care for 24 residents, with 22 en-suite single bedrooms and 1 double room. By the autumn, this number will have grown to 34, following an extension that will include a further dining area, a new treatment room, a consulting room, a hairdressing salon and 2 new bathrooms. There will also be a new reminiscent room so they can focus more on reminiscence therapy, a very important part of dementia care. The Home is part of a small group of privately owned care homes in the south east of England, who are happy to invest substantially in the development of their homes. Langley Haven is not unfamiliar to receiving awards and accolades, and won a place in the Top 20 recommended care homes in the south east of England, and were also winners of Care Home Idol award, sponsored by leading industry website carehome.co.uk Langley Haven is very definitely a dementia care home to which others should aspire.

GHP Healthcare Innovation Award: DEEP OSCILLATION® therapy

PhysioPod® UK Ltd is directed by sisters, Julie Soroczyn and Mary Fickling who exclusively supply the UK and Ireland with internationally patented DEEP OSCILLATION® electrostatic massage therapy, to the private and NHS medical sectors for Lymphoedema and Lipoedema, to patients for self-management of symptoms, and into elite sporting environments (including Premier League Football). We speak to Julie and Mary to find out more. “We specialise in Deep Oscillation® therapy, a gentle, non-invasive and non-traumatic electrostatic massage technique which is patented to Physiomed Elektromedizin AG. It is a German technique that can be used over implanted metal pins and plates, which can be utilised day one post surgery and immediately after injury, where sports massage is normally contraindicated. Intermittent, electrostatic impulses are delivered through vinyl gloves permeating a clinically proven depth of 8cm (without utilising any pressure, saving the clinicians hands and providing treatment to the clinicians hands whilst massaging the patient), or via applicator heads, which enable self-management. “Deep Oscillation® is fast becoming the tool of choice for Lymphoedema and Lipoedema, with many sufferers self-managing”. PhysioPod® UK Ltd are an NHS Approved Supplier, having brought the unknown therapy into the UK in 2006. In 2016, PhysioPod® UK Ltd added the expertise of Elaine MacNicol RGN Clinical Nurse Specialist to the team. “Our customers benefit from PHYSIOMED®’s vast experience in research, development and history of manufacturing medical products since 1973. Their versatile device technology is self-explanatory, user-friendly and far surpasses all safety requirements”. We asked Julie about the main focus of PhysioPod® and found out that though first focussing on the world of elite sport, personal experience of Lymphoedema meant that she wanted to expand their reach. “I saw someone I was close to suffering with Secondary Lymphoedema following breast cancer surgery, this affects one in five ladies. It is a distressing, chronic and often disabling condition; she didn’t receive any treatment back in the Eighties. As such, it is my mission and also my sister Mary’s, to provide

first class, research-backed, user-friendly products to clinicians and patients. “Deep Oscillation® reduces oedema, volume and can break down stubborn fibrotic areas. Secondary Lymphoedema occurs where lymph nodes are removed and/or damaged radiologically reducing the effectiveness of the body’s lymphatic system. It is very unpleasant, and we want to make sure that our patients be helped as much possible whether in their lymphoedema clinic or at home”. Mary added, “Since 2009, we have been very committed to helping Lipoedema sufferers, which is almost certainly a genetically inherited condition. It is thought to only affect women but there are very rare reports of men with similar signs and symptoms. In Lipoedema, the hips, buttocks and legs of women who have it are out of proportion with the rest of their body though it can also affect upper arms. The amount of Lipoedema a woman has and the way it is distributed on her legs and hips, varies between women, some may just have small pockets of fat above the ankles for example, while in others, there’s an obvious discrepancy in size between their upper and lower body. “Lipoedema is most likely to appear at puberty, before which time a young person will most likely have had a ‘normal’ body shape. However, it can also appear during other hormonal changes. Lipoedema can be very distressing, when a young woman finds certain areas of her body do not reduce in the same way as her friends and family despite following the same healthy diet and exercise routines. We work hard to raise awareness of this condition at every opportunity. Our therapy helps reduce pain, inflammation, bruising and improve mobility. We work closely with national charity Lipoedema UK and support groups, Lipoedema Ladies and TALK Lipoedema.

“We keep in constant contact with the clinicians and patients who purchase our products, and offer bespoke aftercare service. We both take calls at all times of day and aim to respond to all emails within 24 hours – we take pride in the fact that our customers know us on a first name basis”. “There are a number of different fields of application for Deep Oscillation® which include; treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, training aftercare and performance stabilisation in sport, pre and post surgery, damage from overstraining, mechanical traumata, pain syndromes such as Fibromyalgia. It can even be used to treat common conditions such as arthritis, back pain and tennis elbow, and has shown promising results when used in wound healing; diabetic foot, burns and ulcers. “It has also been used to help with anti-ageing treatment of the face and neck, eye bags and dark circles and in 80% of cases of grade 1 and grade 2 cellulite. For post partum related problems including breastfeeding and caesarean section healing, it is particularly beneficial. We started its use in the equine and canine, for pre and post event treatment, injury management and maintenance between events. Mary is very excited about the future for the business. “We are very keen to explore neuro rehabilitation, as Deep Oscillation® is used in this field in Russia with success. We hope to exhibit in the UK soon and are actively looking for Neuro Rehabilitation units wanting to trial the therapy”.

Award for Excellence in Laser Skin Care Treatments - UK

Zaheda Hafez is founder of The Laser Treatment Clinic in Harley Street, London. She started her career in the Aesthetic field in 1996 as Senior Consultant to a renowned cosmetic surgeon at a private clinic in Harley Street. We speak to her to find out more about Laser Skin Care. Zaheda has always had an interest in skincare, but she was drawn to the scientific advancements in cosmetics, and what this could mean for the future of skincare. In 2000, her passion led her to open The Laser Treatment Clinic at 1 Harley Street, London. Here, a team of highly skilled professionals have provided advanced solutions to skin concerns for nearly two decades. During this time, Zaheda observed that her clients’ skin concerns had either been initiated or aggravated by their daily skincare routine, and in particular by the superficial ingredients contained in most high-street skincare brands. In response to this, working tirelessly with a Chemist, and using her experience and practice know-how alongside research and testing, she developed a highly natural marine based skin care range, The Laser Treatment Clinic’s Marine Skincare range was launched in 2013. She wanted to give her clients the best skincare not only whilst at the clinic, but to continue the same high standard of skincare at home. “I work with a team of highly skilled professionals to provide advanced skin care solutions with care and compassion at our clinic in Harley Street, London. Our clientele ranges from the local to the national and international. We work with a wide range of clients; students to MP’s, famous actors and singers, as well as others of a high profile. People not just from England but from all around the world; France, Germany, Switzerland, New York, Singapore and Dubai to name just a few places. “Our focus now is, and always has been, to offer our clients the best treatments and products available. All our clients, women and men, come to us for the same one thing, to have Healthy Clear Skin. “Our full range of treatments include, but are not exclusive of; acne treatment, acne scar treatment, pigmentation treatment, scar treatment, stretch marks treatment, laser hair removal, birth mark removal, thread veins treatment, rosacea treatment, sun damage treatment & skin rejuvenation treatment”. When asked about the mission statement for her firm, Zaheda replied that The Laser Treatment Clinic is dedicated to making their clients feel more beautiful; “It’s never too late to rejuvenate, restore and protect the natural beauty of your skin.

She went on to speak about the values that govern the running of The Laser Treatment Clinic. “These six core values, which guide The Laser Treatment Clinic’s mission to this day, are an expression of the vision and intent of our founder. “Respect – we treat everyone in our diverse community, including patients, their families and colleagues, with dignity. “Compassion - provide the best care, treating patients and their family members with sensitivity and empathy at all times. “Integrity - adhere to the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and personal responsibility, worthy of the trust our patients place in us. “Healing - inspire hope and nurture the well-being of the whole person, respecting physical, emotional and spiritual needs. “Teamwork - value the contributions of all, blending the skills of individual staff members in unsurpassed collaboration. “Excellence - deliver the best outcomes and the highest quality service through the unique skills, experience and dedicated effort of every team member. Finally, we asked Zaheda how she ensures that her firm stays at the forefront of industry developments. “We continue to strive for excellence in the ever evolving world of aesthetics, through constant retraining and implementing improved techniques, advanced systems and innovative products”.

Award for Excellence in Healthcare Training Projects - UK

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust are an Acute NHS Hospital in Wolverhampton. Their delegates are Trust-wide, and every role and every speciality attend their training courses. We profile the Trust to find out more about how they achieve this.

The Trust is committed to being safe and effective, kind and caring, and to exceed the expectations of their patients. The purpose of their training programmes is to provide a road map to enable healthcare professionals to establish a culture of patient safety in their own facilities and practices, provide high quality healthcare and to increase patient and staff satisfaction by improving communication amongst staff members, and between medical staff and patients. As a Trust, their vision is an NHS organisation that continues to strive to improve patients’ experiences and outcomes. To assist in achieving this, they deliver high quality, applicable, cutting edge learning and development. The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is the only NHS Organisation that delivers Process Communication Model (PCM®) training. Based on a scientific award – winning clinical discovery, PCM has been researched for more than forty years and experienced by more than a million people over five continents. Using this framework, The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust are able to stay at the forefront of leadership development and provide their staff with the tools, knowledge and skills to improve the patient experience. They are proud to be the only organisation within the NHS with staff who are certified PCM trainers. PCM is established in healthcare across America, Australasia (where The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons offer it as part of their core curriculum training) and large parts of Europe – so it is a proven fit. It has proved to be a perfect follow-on from the Trust’s Applied Emotional Intelligence Programme, which focuses on self-awareness as the key to successful relationship management.

In the NHS, finances are the biggest challenge. The Royal Wolverhampton have to look at income generation and the structure of their training to make this viable and long-lasting. Their organisation is aware that culture change does not happen overnight, but they are very fortunate to have the support and backing of the Trust Board and the Management Team. Without a doubt, PCM is The Royal Wolverhampton’s most significant personal development breakthrough to date. PCM helps to recognise how to communicate with different individuals, by learning how to connect and to motivate in different ways. Staff who get their psychological needs met are better able to stay out of distress, think with clarity, and therefore, make fewer mistakes. A lack of understanding in the communication process generally leads to miscommunication. Miscommunication usually leads to a lack of understanding, distress and mistakes. In healthcare, miscommunication can be fatal. The Royal Wolverhampton look at what an organisation is missing, and bridge that gap with the appropriate intervention. They take their research world-wide and look to NASA, the military and Fortune 500 companies, and bring this learning to the NHS. They are currently looking at Conflict without Casualties: A Field Guide for Leading with Compassionate Accountability and Leading Out of Drama, a comprehensive system for building cultures of compassionate accountability. They look not only for leadership trends but for social and healthcare trends as well.

Already, other NHS organisations are looking to The Royal Wolverhampton to train their staff in PCM. Due to this demand, they currently have two projects on-going with PCM, alongside their Trust-wide training programme.

In order to consolidate learning and ensure its transfer to the workplace, they have just introduced an Advanced PCM programme. This will allow delegates to take their learning to a higher level of complexity and widen the scope of influence they currently have.

The first project (Sign up to Safety) is supported by the NHS Litigation Authority to deliver PCM to areas in the Trust with a high incident rate, in order to bring these down and create a safer patient journey

In the future, The Royal Wolverhampton are also looking to further enhance PCM with more self-awareness programmes like Leading Out of Drama within the next 18 months.

The second project is looking at using PCM in medical handover (a World Health Organisation Hot Topic). This is soon to be piloted within the Trust.

Best for Clinical Trial Transparency Solutions

TrialScope simplifies the complexities of clinical trial transparency performance and compliance, utilising its proven solutions which have been implemented successfully and rigorously tested in the most complex environments. We invited CEO Mike Forgash to tell us more. TrialScope’s market-driven solutions and expertise enable sponsors to improve performance, mitigate compliance risk, and ultimately optimize efficiencies with clinical content lifecycle management tools, expertise and processes. Mike talks us through the firm’s mission and explains the techniques it employs to achieve this. “TrialScope’s mission is to reduce the burden of increasing risk, complexity and costs associated with clinical trial disclosure. We do this by collaboratively creating solutions that help sponsors to consistently comply with ever evolving legislation and internal policies. Our holistic solutions provide enabling technologies that are always designed, developed and supported by unparalleled subject matter expertise. This approach enables our customers to maintain control over and insight into dynamic disclosure content, processes and compliance programs. “Additionally, we are fortunate to have a dedicated and professional team of staff dedicated to achieving this goal. The TrialScope team holds a long and rich pedigree of developing innovative solutions for the life sciences industry. PharmaCM, our clinical trial disclosure platform, optimizes global clinical trial disclosure processes by automating and managing the content, resources, standards and processes that life science organizations employ to meet their clinical trial transparency requirements. Leveraging the PharmaCM platform, we have developed business modules that help trial sponsors manage data requests, publish trial information on branded websites and leverage disclosure data to generate core R&D documents, such as the Study Synopsis.” TrialScope maintains its leadership position in industry by investing in subject matter experts who monitor regulatory trends around the globe. These professionals track, monitor and analyse emerging regulations and new requirements so that TrialScope can plan and develop solutions that address the firm’s customers’ needs, both now and in the future. Mike is keen to highlight the innovative nature of the firm, and the factors which set it apart from the competition.

“Rapid Path to Compliance is TrialScope’s high-touch engagement methodology that provides expert support and guidance to customers who purchase our solutions. Our support and subject matter experts work diligently to ensure a world-class customer experience from start to finish. This is a very different approach from most SaaS solution providers that offer high-tech solutions and low-touch engagements. We collaborate with our customers on current practices as well as future capabilities. This helps us to design better solutions and gives our customers insight and input into our development processes. “In addition, we are very proud of our current customer base for PharmaCM, our clinical trial disclosure platform. We count seven of the top ten commercial clinical trial sponsors as customers. Currently, over 8,000 users manage more than 30,000 clinical trial disclosures on the PharmaCM platform. This level of success in a compliance driven market is significant because to achieve it you cannot just have to have great solutions; you also have to deliver consistently outstanding support in order to reduce the risks associated with non-compliance.” The clinical trials market is constantly turbulent and ever evolving, and as such Mike explains that his firm is equally quick off the mark to ensure that it constantly adapts to the latest changes and supports its clients. “Currently within our sector we are seeing a perfect storm of increasing complexity and more rigid timelines that are impacting the global clinical trial disclosure space. Simultaneously, stakeholders across the marketplace are putting greater pressure on clinical trial sponsors by demanding greater transparency. TrialScope is working to provide greater capabilities in the disclosure space by simplifying these complex processes for our customers. “Alongside this, recent emerging regulations in Europe and the U.S. have had a great impact on our marketplace. These regulations add greater complexity to disclosure processes, decrease response times with

26 | ghp Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Awards 2016

tighter deadlines and will require additional data to be disclosed. This dynamic demands that we collaborate with our customers and respond to new requirements promptly and accurately.” As a concluding comment Mike outlined the firm’s future plans and how it is changing the clinical trials market for the better. “TrialScope is leading the industry in redefining what clinical trial disclosure is and how best to approach it. Our Clinical Content Lifecycle Management (CCLM) solutions are being driven by the unmet needs of an industry seeking to understand, manage and optimize the use of clinical content across functional processes that contribute to the availability of new therapies. “We are currently conducting an early adopter program for Atlas, a unique disclosure intelligence solution that complements our disclosure process management platform, PharmaCM. This standalone module leverages a configurable rules engine to help users understand and take appropriate action toward global disclosure requirements and will be available in 2017.”

Best Full-Service Plastic Surgery Clinic - Asia

Chia-Jung Chuang is a board certificated plastic surgeon in Taiwan. In 2006, he established his own private practice clinic – WiSH Aesthetic Surgery Clinic and expanded to a larger clinic site in 2015. We speak to Dr Chuang to find out more about his firm. “My target client is anyone who wishes to have a better life by improving the way they look. We provide various services in aesthetic and cosmetic surgery, including breast alteration surgery, eyelid surgery, facial bone contouring, facelift, body liposculpturing, and many mini-invasive procedures like skin rejuvenation, phototherapy, filler injectable augmentation and anti-wrinkle botox injection. “As a plastic surgeon, I perform a wide range of different aesthetic surgeries, with my area of expertise lying in breast augmentation and rhinoplasty, which has earned me solid recognition from local and worldwide patients. According to my records, in the past ten years, I have performed over 1500 breast alteration surgery and over 2000 rhinoplasties, with a complication rate of less than 3%. This is a truly precious journey and experience”. Dr Chuang has always strived for excellence in performing all types of plastic surgery. Safety is certainly an extremely important element in his practice and we asked him how he continues to strive for excellence in this area. “We have added the most advanced medical equipment and facilities to our clinic, including LED surgical lamps, a positive pressure operating unit, fully equipped anaesthesia machine, a central station monitoring system and much more. These facilities are very rare in private practices in Asia, making it an important effort that we take to ensure our patients receive their aesthetic treatments in an environment where safety is prioritised. The WiSH Clinic is directed by Dr Chuang, thus all surgeries, with no exceptions, are performed by Dr Chuang in person. “With this personal care from the surgeon, who is the director, the quality of our care, the thoughtfulness and level of hospitality we provide surpass other commercial clinics that are run by numerous doctors. Dr Chuang is not only able to perform different techniques in a range of plastic surgeries, his outstanding sense of aesthetic and ratio analytic skills, mean that he is able to integrate multiple plastic surgeries one time. These special qualities are what make us

unique, and enable us to provide each patient with the most suitable aesthetic improvement program, at the same time shortening the recovery period. “Since 2015, we have incorporated the axisthree 3D simulation system, providing facial bone surgery and breast augmentation patients with pre-operation images that simulate their results, giving patients an understanding of what they can expect. This not only serves as an efficient communication platform which minimizes discrepancy in expectation, it also provides a scientific record system for future analysis, gradually leading the trend of surgery results from an objective perspective to a more subjective perspective, backed up by numerical analysis. This is certainly a developing trend in the field of plastic surgery. “We strive for excellence in endoscopic techniques, which are to be practiced more frequently and smoothly in various surgeries including breast augmentation, facelift, and calf muscle reaction, amongst others. Up to now we have performed more than 1500 endoscopic breast augmentations, over 800 endoscopic forehead and mid-face lifts, all performed by Dr Chuang personally. This is a valuable achievement that we take a lot of pride in”. Asked about new developments in plastic surgery, Dr Chuang highlights the level of customisation now available in the business. “It has come to our attention that 3D printing can be utilized in certain plastic surgeries, such as creating chin implants for aesthetic correction, or for printing facial implants for reconstruction of a facial bone defect. This will certainly increase the level of customisation in plastic surgeries. We have our eyes on this technology and once all developments within it are complete, including the material being used having reached a trusted level of safety and persistence, we will incorporate the technology into our surgeries. “Plastic surgery requires a high level of customisation, and is extremely difficult to replicate, therefore the skills and aesthetic sense of the surgeon determine the success of the surgery. In seeking continuous excellence, Dr Chuang frequently participates in vari-

and trustable environment, patients are able to enjoy the process of becoming beautiful as if it’s a vacation. All of this gives patients’ satisfaction in both body and mind, which is the ultimate goal of our continued efforts, and the significant value of plastic surgery!

Advanced Brain Monitoring, Inc. under the leadership of Chris Berka, Daniel Levendowski, and Philip Westbrook M.D., pioneered the assessment of the brain through EEG-based applications that can be easily and routinely applied outside of the laboratory. We profile the firm and explore this innovative procedure and how it is affecting the lives of patients around the world. Since 1999, Advanced Brain Monitoring has received over 40 research grants totaling more than $32 mm, primarily from the National Institute of Health and Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), to spur discovery of advanced neuroscience applications. These efforts resulted in over 100 scientific publications, and 20 U.S. and seven international patents for the measurement and interpretation of brain function, detection of abnormal neuro-cardiorespiratory response during sleep, and devices to improve sleep quality and enhance performance. The company’s functional Neuro-Electrophysiological ImagingTM (fNEI) simultaneously measures the brain’s electrical activity (EEG) and neurocognitive performance, and compares results to a database of more than 7,000 sessions from healthy, impaired, and/or diseased subjects, to provide an accurate and reliable assessment of brain state. A 40-minute fNEI battery of tests is designed to activate and assess the brain networks underlying attention, executive function and memory.

motor control, measure expertise during surgical simulations, and predict future cognitive performance. Within the industry Advanced Brain Monitoring is recognized as a pioneer in these key areas, and many international media providers have highlighted the benefits of these innovative technologies. Looking ahead, screening for early stage neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, mild cognitive impairment) and psychiatric disorders with EEG biomarkers will soon be possible. The envisioned future is for routine brain health assessments during sleep and waking to be conducted in a manner similar to a mammogram or colonoscopy. Ultimately, early detection will increase the likelihood that an intervention can be developed to delay the onset of these disabling conditions and has the potential to change lives.

Sleep Profiler technology, designed to explore the functioning of the brain during sleep, is widely used to assist in the differential diagnosis of insomnia and sleep apnea. A reimbursed medical procedure in the United States, it is used by clinicians to determine the need for prescription sleeping aids, or to assess the impact of anti-depressants and pain medications on sleep quality. Sleep Profiler is used by the National Institute of Health, U.S. Special Operations Command Forces, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Ohio State, Oxford University, Washington University and many other academic institutions to better understand the impact of sleep physiology on aging, memory, mood, performance impairment, and clinical outcomes. In addition, the company’s brain measurement systems are used to assist spinal cord patients regain

Best Family-Run Nursing & Residential Care Home - Wiltshire

Ashley Grange Nursing Home Ltd is a family-run business which provides nursing care, residential care and respite opportunities to 55 adults. The family, Mr and Mrs Ashley and Mr and Mrs De La Haye have been operating care homes since 1981. Ashley Grange Nursing Home was opened in 1984 with the aim of supporting adults with long-term conditions such as mental health issues, physical disabilities, sensory impairments or dementia. Isabel De La Haye spoke to us about the home and their approach to care. Our focus is on accommodating the needs of any person who enters our home and to help maintain or enhance their quality of life. Our residents are typically elderly; however, we do also welcome younger adults and those with learning disabilities. We focus on providing high quality care whilst also concerning ourselves with the individual preferences of a person in our care. These considerations are a huge part of what we do as we strive to feel like a home and not an institution. We welcome the families and friends of our Residents and our home has a real community feel. On the whole, we find that the vast majority of our resÂŹidents come through us via recommendations and we have been honoured to have second generations of families come to be cared for in our home. This sense of continuity is something that we pride ourselves on and a number of our staff members have been with us for a very long time. We focus a lot on the training that we give our staff making sure that there is a consistent level of care across the board. We offer training on an on-going basis to support this and have found that our staff enjoy the training that we provide. We often under-

take additional training as a means of continuing their professional development. Historically, nursing home admission meant an unlikely exit but there has been a large move recently, particularly in our local area, to help get people home again. We have been utilised as a means to help get people back on their feet with previous residents calling prior to operations asking if they can come ‘home’ for a bit of Rest and Recreation before returning to their own home. Our biggest success is that we keep listening and keep evolving. It is something that we have always done and something that we will always continue to do. We always challenge ourselves by asking whether our standards of care would be good enough for our own loved ones and we make sure that this is always the case.

Austenwood Nursing Home, part of Salveo Care Ltd, provides high-end specialist residential nursing care for elderly residents and other adults over the age of 50 years. We invited Peter Evans to tell us more about the firm and its dedication to providing the very highest standard of care. Austenwood Nursing home offers high quality care combined with the ability to manage complex medical issues, which allows it to treat people in a person centred way, with dignity and respect. As the home’s parent company, Salveo Care, entered the elderly healthcare sector through personal experience of poor care received and a desire to run a successful operation where profit and excellence of care are not mutually exclusive, this is of particular importance, as Peter outlines. “The mission of Salveo Care Ltd and Austenwood as a Care Home is to provide Outstanding Care and to continually improve what we do. We look at how care is delivered in the public and private sector and look to implement best practice where we can. We try to identify innovative ways to deliver care so that we not only deliver really good care but differentiate ourselves from the plethora of other homes providing similar services.”

What truly sets the firm apart, according to Peter, is its innovative approach to care and management. “Austenwood is different to many providers as we are family owned, dynamic and believe in care over profit. Decisions are made quickly and with the best interest of patients at the heart. If a manager identifies a need for a new piece of equipment. They do not need to go through a protracted procurement process; if it is needed, it is purchased without delay. The Clinical team have complete autonomy when it comes to care of residents.” Moving forward, Peter outlines the firm’s aim to continue offering the very highest standard of care whilst operating flexibly to ensure it innovates and works with industry developments in order to provide the very best support and assistance to its residents. “Here at Austenwood we are always trying to look at new ways of doing what we do. Most Skilled Periodontist 2016 - UK

The Avenue Dental practice has a dedicated and caring team of professionals who offer exceptional dental care and is primarily developed as a specialist periodontic referral practice, having a base of over 250 referring practitioners in the United Kingdom and Ireland. We speak to Dr Nik Pandya to find out more about the practice. Dr Nik Pandya joined The Avenue Dental Practice in 1989. He completed his MSc in Periodontology in 1991 and Diploma in General Dental Practice with the Royal College of Surgeons in 1993. He joined the GDC Specialist Register and has developed and expanded the practice to a 5 room multi-disciplinary service. “The Avenue Dental Practice has been providing high quality and specialist dentistry for over 60 years. We have a caring and friendly approach, and our aim is to listen to the wishes of our patients, tailoring treatment to the individual and discussing treatment options and costs. Patients are able to contact us 24 hours a day, and we also provide a flexible approach to appointments, making special arrangements for those who find it difficult to attend within normal office hours.

Aside from the WaterLase technology, The Avenue Dental Practice has also recently completed the installation of a dedicated decontamination room, to comply with CQC regulations, and have recently invested in a CBCT Scanner, allowing them to conduct state of the art x-rays, in both 2D and 3D. It is also now able to provide training and conference facilities.

Company: The Avenue DP Ltd Name: Dr Nik V Pandya Email: theavenuedentalpractice@btconnect.com Web Address: theavenuedentalpractice.co.uk Telephone: 01206 577696

“We have some exciting new facilities that have recently been introduced into our practice, which includes the cutting edge WaterLase technology - a laser unit for use in surgical procedures and microscopes for use in endodontic treatment. The WaterLase laser unit has had a very significant impact within the practice, as it is one of the most advanced dental treatments available. It uses focused light energy coupled with a stream of water, for a precise and gentle dental experience; especially useful for nervous patients. This treatment is also beneficial because it involves little or no use of anaesthetic, has a faster healing time, causes less bleeding and allow for treatment in more than one area of the mouth. “Laser therapy is used for the treatment and prevention of periodontal disease and for oral surgery. WaterLase offers important advantages over conventional treatment using scalpels and sutures, as it is less invasive. Tissue and bone can be preserved with a minimal laser-based approach, whilst removing calculus and disinfecting and eliminating the bacteria in deep periodontal pockets. It is also used to improve the appearance of your smile, removing excess gum tissue that gives a ‘gummy smile’. Gum recession can be prevented and ‘tongue ties’ treated.

Speaking about recent developments in the field, Dr Ayna notes that “the demographical development of an ageing community presents us with new treatment concerns. With my expertise in immediate loading concepts, however, I hold a market-defining position in this area”. Finally, we asked Dr Ayna about what the future holds for his firm and about his upcoming plans. “I’m already working nationwide, as patients from all of Germany come to me with their dental problems. In the future, the Dr Ayna brand will open branches in a number of cities in Germany. This recognition is an extreme honour for me”.

Most Innovative Healthcare IT Company - USA

GSI Health was founded in 2003, and unites patients and doctors by supporting collaborative ‘whole person’ health care for effective population health management within complex populations. They have embraced the industry’s transition to value-based care, well before the vast majority of health IT providers, and changed their service-based business to develop a comprehensive population health platform, ideal for value-based healthcare models; they have now become a leading provider for care coordination tools to support value-based programs.

GSI Health was founded with a vision of a future in which the problems of today’s healthcare are solved. Healthcare today is a problem, and while GSI Health cannot guarantee a world free of health issues, they believe they can work towards a world where health care is optimized. They are ushering in a future where data-driven technology assists overall care delivery, improving the health of entire populations and solving the problem of uncoordinated, under-informed healthcare. The software provided by GSI Health brings care coordination and analytics closer together, providing an innovative technology bridge that enables care teams to apply the results from data analysis to the management of individual patients, and entire populations. They believe that getting the right information into the right hands can have a tremendous benefit for healthcare. They deliver a technology bridge between care coordination and analytics that brings the insights out of the back room and closer to the people who are delivering care, empowering caregivers to make decisions about how to best spend their scarce time and resources.

The ability to remain a leader in this emerging field is impressive, and GSI Health have achieved this by accurately predicting the market’s key needs and their correct trajectory of relevance, enabling their customers to be equipped to consistently perform well in a rapidly evolving environment. Healthcare payment reform is driving GSI Health’s growth, and the move to replacing volume-based compensation with value-based compensation will continue to fuel their leadership for years to come.

GSI Health’s work successfully supports innovative programs such as the New York Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program, enabling providers to assume more risk for managing their populations and meet the challenges of moving to a value-based model, which is the future for the healthcare industry. As the first permanent payment reform for safety-net populations, the DSRIP program is influencing healthcare payment programs throughout the nation. GSI Health have been the vanguard, bringing analytics to the point of care and connecting insights with care delivery in a way that has not been done before.

Best for Sports Injury Chiropractic Care - Michigan

Motor City Sports Chiropractic has recently celebrated its first anniversary, and was founded by Dr Hael Ghaleb and Dr Hamdan Harhara, who both graduated as part of the 130th Class of Palmer College of Chiropractic, West Campus in 2014. Dr Ghaleb talks to us about their goals and what he hopes the future holds.

“We focus predominantly on sports medicine, but we do not just apply this in the sports field. Whilst we do work with athletes and help them maintain their performance, we also utilise the therapies and modalities at our disposal to help regular patients, regardless of their age or how their injury was sustained. “Throughout our time at university, my partner and I took many extracurricular courses, specialising in injury and sports management. We spent most of our weekends on these courses, as we were, and still are, incredibly passionate about the service that we

now provide. The hunger that we have for this line of work is still very strong, and we feel that this gives us the edge over competitors who may have been in the profession longer. “Our motto is ‘putting the motor city back in motion’; we want to help make people more active. Detroit may be known as the motor city, but we would love to see more people out walking and riding their bikes. We want to help everyone get to the point where they are healthy and able to exercise, and where they rarely have to go and visit their doctor except for annual check-ups. “A recent Harvard Medical School study showed that, in America, up to 80% of people will have back pain at any given time. Their evidence also suggested that chiropractic care, physical therapy and acupuncture were the best treatment options for this, and we are pleased that we are working in a field that is a recommended treatment option, suggested by such a well-respected establishment”. Dr Ghaleb is excited about the future of Motor City Sports Chiropractic, and talked about their future ambitions, alongside his dream job ambitions. “Myself and my partner are both massive soccer fans. I support Liverpool, and Dr Harhara, Arsenal, and our dream jobs would be to work as physios for these clubs. However, closer to home, Detroit FC are setting up a new club, and we would jump at the chance to work as the chiropractors for this team”.

Best Behavioural Healthcare Organisation 2016

PsycHealth Ltd. is a managed behavioral healthcare organization that was founded in 1989 by Dr. Madeleine Y. Gomez, with a mission of connecting people to mental health, supportive and holistic services. It provides a full array of managed services, including claims and credentialing, but its focus remains on clinical care, coordination and quality.

PsycHealth strives to incorporate the needs of its members and current research into the programs and specialized services it provides. In this manner, PsycHealth has always been ahead of the curve in terms of both clinical services and care coordination. One of PsycHealth’s oldest programs is the Home Intervention Program (HIP). The Home Intervention Program was developed in 1999 to reach high risk patients with multiple hospital readmissions. The program has been overwhelmingly successful in terms of the impact it has had on hospitalization rates, but equally importantly, it has been well-received and appreciated by members. This program is set apart by PsycHealth using highly credentialed and experienced providers to connect with members in their homes.

Dr Gomez feels strongly that all individuals deserve and require providers who have expert training and experience in that care. This philosophy is similarly reflected in the care coordinators at PsycHealth Ltd. This team of professionals works to connect with the members and ensure their needs are met by the services provided. They also act as the front line interface, so that communication between the treating team does not fall through the cracks. Without the leadership of the expert clinical care coordinators, quality services and progress may fail to ensue, impacting on both the patients and the payors. The needs for care coordination have been well demonstrated in the industry, yet this area continues to be overlooked for its integral value in healthcare, particularly behavioral healthcare, where advocacy with, and for, the patients in a member driven approach remains essential. Most recently, PsycHealth Ltd launched the Holistic Health and Wellness Program which engages members via a health-oriented framework and provides them with tools for daily use to manage the challenges of life. Dr Gomez firmly believes that without a healthy diet, physical activity and stress management techniques such as relaxation exercises, optimal mental health will not be achieved. The gratitude expressed by the patients in this program has been touching, and this remains inspirational for the PsycHealth team. Again, per PsycHealth’s model of using experts in the field, the Holistic Health and Wellness Program providers are top specialists who generously share their expertise to empower patients and serve the treating team through care coordination and communications.

“SanaClis invests heavily in the development of its own IT solutions for internal clients’ needs. We find that our clients highly value these additional tools from us.” “Our mission is to act promptly on our clients’ requests, in accordance with proclaimed trial procedures, and along with observance of all international and local regulations. Best Dental Practice 2016 - Edinburgh

Southside Dental Care is a dental practice in Edinburgh, founded 8 years ago by Leanne Branton and her sister, Aimi Branton-Bouglas. We spoke to Leanne to learn more. “Southside Dental Care is an NHS practice with a real focus on providing high quality treatment for our NHS patients. We understand that some people have negative views of dentistry and we want to be involved in changing this, making sure that people’s perceptions are really positive. Our purpose as a dental team is to provide our patients with a full range of high quality dental care in a relaxed, hygienic environment to help them achieve excellent oral health and create happy, beautiful smiles” We asked Leanne about the main focus of Southside Dental Care. “We really push to make sure that the oral health of our patients is as good as it can be, and we offer a range of hygiene treatments to compliment this.

“We are also heavily involved in the Childsmile initiative, which is run throughout Scotland. This aims at improving dental health in children and educating them about the benefits of good oral hygiene. Good oral health in childhood means healthy teeth and gums throughout life. Childsmile is working to ensure all children, regardless of income or background, have the best possible start. Our team are trained to deal with children, and specifically those who are anxious about visits to the dentist, so we really feel like we can help make a difference. “Over the last few years we have started to develop our skills into the more cosmetic and aesthetic side of dentistry. There is a lot of interest in this aspect of dentistry and having beautiful teeth and healthy teeth really do go hand in hand. To properly accommodate for this, our team have taken on lots of additional training and we have introduced some dentists with special interests to our team to ensure we have the appropriate skill levels to provide excellent care. We are in a very fortunate position because the practice is involved in the vocational training of graduate dentists within the NHS and this allows us to stay very up to date with any changes in protocol. Leanne is very enthusiastic about the future for Southside Dental. “Currently, we are having an OPG machine installed, which will allow us to picture the full health of the mouth and monitor areas below the gum and bone which our standard x-rays don’t allow for. “We intend to keep growing the practice and looking after our patients. Our team is ever expanding to achieve this and this growth is something which we really hope continues!”

Audiology Practice of the Year 2016 - UK

Occasional buzzing and hissing noises in the head can be infuriating. However, people living with these sounds all the time can be driven to the depths of despair. It’s tinnitus, and The Tinnitus Clinic has the answer. Tinnitus is the involuntary perception of sound in the absence of external noise, which is perceived within a person’s ears or head. People with tinnitus often develop a negative emotional reaction to the tinnitus sound that brings on anxiety. This anxiety, in turn, can lead to disrupted sleep, an inability to relax, and a reduction in the quality of life. Over 10% of adults’ experience tinnitus at some time. This might be after a loud music concert, or perhaps a long train journey. Exposure to high noise levels and the inevitable process of aging can all cause a reduction in high pitched hearing acuity and hearing loss, which nearly always leads to tinnitus. In the past, when asking for help with tinnitus, people have been told that nothing could be done. This is very far from what a patient of the Tinnitus Clinic will be told. Through their clinics across the UK and with an international expansion programme planned to start in 2017, patients have unparalleled access to evidence based treatments and therapies. Levo Tinnitus Thera-

py is applied as the patient sleeps, Desyncra Acoustic Neuromodulation for tonal tinnitus, and The Tinnitus Clinic’s bespoke Tinnitus Desensitisation Therapy, all bring real results to their patients. An in depth consultation with an expert audiologist gives the patient the opportunity to be fully informed about their condition, before they decide on the treatment best suited to their tinnitus and lifestyle. Tinnitus had long been regarded as a forgotten medical discipline. The Tinnitus Clinic are now proud to accept the Audiology Practice of the Year 2016 – UK Award, as they feel they have been recognised for their contribution to healthcare – and most importantly, to improving people’s lives.
