Working within West African Region, especially in Nigeria, provides the firm with a number of additional challenges. There are community related challenges faced while working in the Nigerian region, as industry partnerships can often be difficult to forge and there are legislative problems to deal with as well. However, there are also a lot of opportunities in working in the Nigerian region. There are training opportunities for staff which enhance their ability to fulfil their duties and help them develop personally. Additionally there are opportunities to develop communities within the area the firm works in, thereby fulfilling Brone’s social responsibilities, which is an important factor for the firm.

Our main expertise and experience is in developing the small scale supply chain, and we have also covered a few projects where we drew up regional distribution master plans. Where it was required, we added potential upstream and downstream systems to be part of the small scale LNG Feeders in which we are involved. Since 2005, we have added to our portfolio the off-shore receiving serminals – FSRU. LNG Services by Dynamic Shipping started in our homeland of Israel, where we have focused the government on the advantages of FSRU in enhancing the country’s security of supply. We were among the very few parties to push and preach for LNG into the country, and took every possible opportunity to explain to the public, large companies, electricity companies, parliament members, ministers about the ability, advantages and availability of LNG for our future natural gas industry. Once the Government Prequalification Tender was issued in October 2009, we brought one of the world’s leading providers of this service into the tender. In early 2010 we passed the PQ, and built a consortium for the FSRU company. Under this sector, we managed to run some feasibility studies and Pre-FEED work for several companies worldwide. Our feasibility study program examined the potential and opportunities to use LNG Feeders and draw all options for such a service – to allow the best Tailor Made Solution build up to the specific project. We are geared to serve any size entity up to the corporate and governmental level. Any of the above services can be given to any size entity up to the corporate and governmental level.

Miko Marine provides unique tools and services in the maritime, offshore and subsea industry. We focus on oil spill prevention, the blanking off sea chests and hull apertures and the use of underwater magnets.
The company was founded in 1996 on the idea of using a magnetic patch for stopping seawater leaking into a floating vessel -or to stop oil leaking from the vessel into the sea. The magnetic patch, called the Miko Plaster®, has since been delivered to several hundreds of clients worldwide for immediate use in emergency situations, for retention and carriage in anticipation of emergencies and for use during planned underwater operations such as in-water surveys that require the closure of part of a vessel’s structure.
goes for all the Three Lines of Defence, and is what separates us from the rest.
The Miko Plaster® has been developed into several sub-types while new tools have been introduced such as the series of powerful Miko Permanent Magnets and the Miko Anchor Magnets which complements it significantly. Miko Plasters®, magnets and supplementary tools required for installation are offered in kits assembled for specific purposes. The kits are pre-packed and stored ready for despatch to anywhere in the world at short notice.
The marine and offshore oil industries are both experiencing trends in legislation that are moving towards an ever greater focus on safety and environmental protection. The extraordinary costs of any environmental damage are encouraging a greater awareness of the risks of pollution and the need to identify solutions to them. Modern technology and comprehensive safety legislation is leading to a steady reduction in the number of marine casualties, while a new generation of people is willing to protect the globe helped by an increased understanding that prevention is better than cure.
With substantial investments in research and development, we are continuously expanding our range of products and services in the marine industry. ShipArrestor and the Moskito are the latest additions, both being game-changers as original new solutions to persistent problems. With the experience gained from using the Miko Plaster® for 17 years and a large network of salvage masters, divers and expert advisers familiar with our products, we can support our clients in the field with operational services according to the needs of each individual customer. We offer oil spill prevention through the application of what we term as our ‘Three Lines of Defence’: 1st line: ShipArrestor and sea anchor solutions – This is a sea anchor that is delivered by helicopter to create a lifeline for ships of any size that are drifting without power and in danger of running aground. 2nd line: Miko Plaster – Magnetic or flexible emergency patches fitted by divers to seal holes in ships thereby keeping water on the outside and oil on the inside. 3rd line: Moskito – A specially developed tool that can penetrate the hulls of sunken ships and extract any trapped oil before it can leak out to cause pollution. When it comes to oil spill prevention, the main difference between Miko and other suppliers in the field is that we have the capability to prevent the oil spill from happening in the first place, rather than containing it after it already happened. This
10 AI Guide to Arbitration 2015
The key factor is that the Ship Arrestor, the Miko Plasters and the Moskito are all completely unique products that are unavailable from any other supplier. They were all invented, designed and developed by Miko engineers as a solution to existing problems for which nobody else was offering a practical answer. Miko Plasters have been used on a number of occasions to prevent ships sinking.
After two years of intense research and development, the oil removal tool Moskito was successfully demonstrated in its final form to the Norwegian Coastal Administration in December. With thousands of wrecked ships around the globe containing oils that will eventually be liberated by corrosion or vessel movement, the Moskito is the first tool to offer the world a quick and practical means of removing the danger. The ShipArrestor was officially introduced to the market as the Factory Acceptance Test was successfully completed in September. Now, instead of coastal states just watching as drifting ships break up and pollute their shores, they finally have a means to prevent the disaster occurring. A new generation of Miko Plaster intended for the quick repair of land-based storage tanks was demonstrated to Statoil. The patches were assembled together with powerful magnets in a new kit called the Tank Sealer Kit. After the successful demonstration, Statoil purchased 17 kits for distribution to their tank farms in August last year. The successful launch of the ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) magnet has introduced a versatile and valuable tool for the use of subsea engineers. Our region of Norway and Scandinavia in general has traditionally been an early adopter of new technologies of all sorts. The region has pioneered a number of developments in shipping and this creates an environment where innovation is encouraged, respected and supported. Inventors are less likely to experience the same suspicion that
Miko Marine AS
occurs in other countries. End users are prepared to rely on their own judgement of a new product and will be the first to buy it if they believe that it will meet their needs. In Scandinavia, unlike so many other parts of the world, people do not rush to be second but trust their own judgement and step out as the first user of a new product if they think that it will meet their needs. This, in turn, encourages firms such as Miko to invest in the development of new ideas because we know that we will not be confronted by a market that is unwilling to believe in something just because it is new.
Looking towards the future, we will be pushing to introduce the Moskito to the market and to be the first to remove the environmental threat posed by so much sunken oil.

Chantiers ALLAIS is well armed, thanks to the experiments acquired, to face the future, and to innovate a long time yet. François Allais President - Chantiers Allais
Chantiers ALLAIS was established in 1984, in a garage of 72 m², where Stéphane and François ALLAIS built their first ships, Optimists, for sailing schools. Today the shipyard is located in an infrastructure of 18000 m², in Cherbourg, where they have built ships up to 35 m. We spoke to François Allais about the growth of their company and how they continue to innovate in the shipbuilding industry.
Over the past thirty last years, the development of our company has been based on a continued improvement of the capacity of the shipyard to offer clients the right tools for their trade, and also at the right price. Our desire to improve has led the company strategy in terms of our organisation and the products we provide. Constantly innovating and improving has been at the have been at the heart of what we do, and is the reason why we have survived so long in the French shipbuilding industry. Since Chantiers ALLAIS’ inception, a lot of shipyards in France have disappeared. In the domain of shipbuilding, where the work of the engineers really is an art form, innovation depends on the capacity to combine the state of the art as well as fulfilling the specific requirements of the mission of the ship. Both of these combined require a high level of expertise and an indepth knowledge of the job at hand. Therefore, at Chantiers ALLAIS, pragmatic innovation is the constant preoccupation of everyone, with one main aim: the satisfaction of the client. Our confidence has been built throughout the years, mainly as a result of many ships successfully built which can be considered as proof that the company has made all the right choices. Furthermore, these decisions also provide us with guidelines for the future. In the earlier years of our company, I had a chance meeting with one experienced shipowner who taught us that the ideal boat was the one which is practical, reliable and economic, in order to allow him to develop his business. This meeting, in 1987, was the starting point of a partnership, in which each one of us brought the knowledge together to define a ship that matched the requirement of its mission. Shipbuilding always involves a level of compromise, and the main difficulty is to prioritise the requirements, and it is the job of the ship owner to define them and the job of the designer to find the best correlation between them. In that way, this relationship involves them each playing a different role, in the respect of the constraints of each other, but with the common aim to do the best ship, at the best price. Some technical innovations have also been developed, as for example, in 1996, the resilient mounting of the superstructure that had never been tested before on a high speed craft has brought a huge improvement against noise nuisances. On the other hand, the partnership also led to us reflecting on a model of organisation that could allow people to save costs of construction, which was a shared problem between the shipowner and the shipyard. The former learned to standardise his requirements, working in close collaboration with the study office of the company, to finalise a project about which no change could be brought during the construction. This tool facilitates the planning of works and logistics, and reduces the cost of delays supply and the lack of prevision in the piloting of works. All of these common reflections and actions have benefited to the shipowner and to the shipyard, and are processes which have continued to be used today.
