Business Development Alliance Business Development Alliance (BDA) works with business owners to identify components of their businesses that are not realising their full potential and to build a stronger, sustainable, more profitable future. We spoke to Director Mark Fernandez to find out more about the firm and the range of services it offers.
BDA is Australia’s leading franchise consultancy firm with particular focus on developing franchise systems. Mark discusses how the firm works to provide clients with the very highest standards of support and service.
“At BDA, we pride ourselves on the ability to work shoulder to shoulder with our clients to achieve the very best outcomes. Our philosophy is underpinned by our education, training and events platforms. Our strength lies in the ability to tailor our services to the individual business needs by carefully combining the business’ current strengths and capabilities with our proven business development strategies and knowledge of the market.” Operating in a fast paced, ever evolving industry, BDA works hard to ensure that it remains at the forefront of new developments. Mark talks us through the industry and how his firm will adapt around the
changes it is seeing to ensure it continues to provide clients with real practical cutting edge solutions.
“The Australian Franchise Industry has an estimated 1120 Franchise Systems, more than 79,000 units of businesses, employs over 470,000 people and contributes over $146 billion in revenue to the Australian Economy. It is also estimated that the number of Franchise systems in Australia will grow to around 1344 by 2020. “The industry is growing; however, the constant need to reinvent and maintian a sustainable business model will become an even bigger challenge with the growth of online and digital sales technologies. We have seen large brands disappear overnight, partly because of the lack of understanding to what franchising is. Boards and Management are faced with diminishing margins, tougher customer service expectations and government regulation, all of
4 APAC / Business Awards 2017
which requires high level thinking and operational deployment.” As well as working around the developments in the corporate landscape, BDA also has to adapt to the changes it sees in the franchising space, as Mark explains. “Franchising is highly regulated and with good cause. Over the past 12 months we have seen the introduction of new legislation by Fair Work Ombudsman, targeting ‘vulnerable workers’’. The Act, is designed to ensure that workers payments and conditions meet the awards and correct entitlements. As of 28 October this is now the responsibility of the Franchisor across their network to oversee and ultimately be held responsible with the franchisee should a breach of the Act be found. “At BDA, we have undertaken to educate as much as possible and have hosted a ‘Franchise Forum’ on this hot topic to try and demystify the myths that surround the new changes. We
are working with systems to help them implement some of the ‘best practises’ around the changes in the Act, to improve their businesses and reduce the risk of exposure.” Thanks to these developments, the future looks bright for BDA, as Mark is proud to conclude.
“Overall, we are excited at the opportunities that come along with an ever changing economic world of business. We see our role to guide Franchisors, Franchisees and entrepreneurs in a way to get the best out of their people and ultimately the best ROI for the brand. There are so many opportunities to be able to work with new and emerging franchise systems and those looking to come to Australia. We pride ourselves on being able to assist any business, but the business has to want the help. Technology will play a big part of the next few years and we are excited to be focusing our efforts on improving franchisor and franchisee relationships whilst building sustainable businesses.”

This starts at the top with me and filters all the way through the staff. Everyone knows the values that are integral to us and what their purpose is and everyone is rewarded for delivering their best. “To ensure that our solution lives up to expectations, DebtCol has invested in a comprehensive user knowledge base where users of the product can find what they seek whether it be knowledge articles or videos, or through an online helpdesk tracking system or LiveChat interaction with our helpdesk staff. into the APAC region with several opportunities from various parts of Asia, Fiji and New Zealand. The Australian market is highly professional and compliant and extremely competitive, so for us to operate in this space, we need to provide our clients with a solution that allows them to succeed in the same space.” Looking ahead, Sandy is excited as he outlines the developments which will lead DebtCol to a prosperous future.
“Over the last 12 months DebtCol has been focusing its attention on APIs. An Application Programming Interface allows and manages interaction between two connected services. So for us, operating business in an extremely competitive market, having APIs to offer our clients means they can create their own plug-ins to our software to give themselves a competitive edge. APIs can also assist with providing disparate systems with live updates which bring much greater efficiencies and accuracy, vastly improving their bottom line. “Moving forward, the immediate future sees DebtCol extending its APIs and allowing for more strategic integrations that further benefits its clients and further extending its market share as a result. This will provide us with many great opportunities to build upon our current success which we are looking forward to taking advantage of.”

Meta House Cambodian-German Cultural Association (KDKG e.V.) / Meta House Phnom penh is the sole partner of the German Cultural Foundation “Goethe Institute” in Cambodia. Journalist Nico Mesterharm tells us more about the organisation and its ongoing success. NGO KDKG e.V.. is the umbrella organization of the Cambodian-German Cultural Centre Meta House Phnom Penh, which was established in 2007 in Cambodia’s capital by German journalist Nico Mesterharm and his Cambodian team. Set on 500 square meters, the centre is open to the public six days a week. It accommodates an art gallery, the German language school, a rooftop cinema and the restaurant; Art Café. Nico explains what events the organisation puts on and what it does to support other businesses and ventures within Cambodia,
“Each month, we host more than 100 free admission events, such as art and photo exhibitions, film screenings and talks, dance and theatre performances, music concerts and DJ parties. We also provide space for meaningful public events, workshops and seminars. Through artist exchange programs, community arts projects and by fostering links with galleries,
curators, foundations, as well as with South-East Asian and international universities, we actively support Cambodian artists and students to promote the development of contemporary arts and media in Cambodia.”
there must be a certain amount of teamwork in which everyone works together in order to achieve the targets the that organisation sets itself. Nico tells us about Meta House’s mission and the steps which the NGO takes in order to achieve this.
Winning this award is a sign of Meta House’s recent and ongoing success, and Nico explains how it feels to have won, as well as describing what he believes to be the main reasons behind the firm’s success.
“Moving forward, our purpose is to promote intercultural exchange and knowledge transfer between Cambodia and Europe. Moreover, we aim to meet cultural needs of Cambodians both in the country and in the diaspora. The NGO promotes education and development of cultural industries. The centre continually strives to engage community members of all ages in the creation, contemplation, and appreciation of visual and performing arts. Moreover, we invite creative people from around the globe to explore what Cambodia has to offer.
“Here at Meta House., we are very grateful to win this award, as it also brings recognition to Cambodia’s young and thriving media and arts scene after decades of turmoil. The growth of expressive art forms is crucial to the development of any society, none more so than Cambodia where individuals are desperate for a voice. This is why we foster an environment of selfexpression and critical thinking. “Furthermore, we give a special focus to social-related and charity art projects in Cambodia, dealing with important issues such as domestic violence, corruption, drug abuse, human trafficking, child exploitation, climate change, deforestation and the on-going reconciliation process after 30 years of civil war. We actively promote democratic values and human rights such as freedom of speech and free access to the internet worldwide.” With an overall vision of promoting insight and knowledge between Cambodia and Europe,

Pure Money Technology Inc Pure Money Technology Inc is a self-funded company which, after only three months, has implemented and deployed three smart contracts on the Ethereum Ropsten test network. Carlos Tapang discusses the firm’s plans for the future as it seeks to build upon this achievement and grow even further. In early 2018, Pure Money Technology’s pioneering new programme will begin, offering the firm many exciting opportunities to work with a range of clients. Carlos discusses the firm’s ambitions and how he is driving change within the blossoming market.
“Pure Money Technology, which recently partnered with Micro Money, is in the cryptocurrency business. Bitcoin is getting a lot
of attention, but Ethereum, the number two cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalization, is a much-improved version of the same idea. Our vision is to spread the use of Ethereum as a medium of exchange – we want people to be able to use Ethereum in their daily lives, to buy grocery, to pay for lunch, pay for the apartment. To achieve this vision, our mission is to distribute a free Point-of-Sale (POS) app that allows vendors to accept ethers at their stores. We are organizing an army of evangelists who will push the POS app. This army is decentralized, working together to achieve this common purpose by way of “smart contracts”. The smart contracts we will soon be deploying on the Ethereum network will allow us to recruit LOCAL evangelists who will be incentivized by a commission on every POS transaction. This is an international undertaking,
but we will start with two markets that we are most familiar with, the Philippines and the U.S.” Overall, Carlos and his team have a bright and exciting future ahead as they seek to offer a unique platform for cryptocurrencies, as Carlos concludes.
“Looking ahead, the smart contracts are up and running in the Ethereum test network. I am aiming for deployment in the main Ethereum network by mid-January. Once it is deployed in the main network, we will start a pilot program in Manila and the Seattle area. If the pilot programs are successful, we will then start a token sale. The tokens are aimed mainly at people who will be evangelists, but these can also be held as tokens of value. Each token entitles the holder to an installation of the POS app in the holder’s (evangelist’s) chosen territory.”
