Creating the right opportunities for Novartis’ talent is critical to successfully collaborate with health institutions, patients and the communities we serve in the Latin America and Canada region. “Fundamentally, I believe that one of the cornerstones of our success, that set us apart from others in the industry, is the strong connectivity and collaboration with our Global Learning teams at headquarters, which is a powerhouse of innovation. This gives us a strong visibility of the multiple educational programs available, and helps us tackle common needs and goals across the globe,
eliminating the risk of duplicating efforts. “On the other hand, I would have to say that focusing on what is unique and matters most to our geographical markets, gives us the opportunity to work and explore solutions in partnership with top Business Schools and institutions of higher learning in the region. This is one of the most valued benefit we can offer to our associates or potential ones, they see it as a great benefit to have access to premium education institutions and programs.” Moving forward, Marcelo has a strong plan to maintain and build upon his firm’s success as it seeks to overcome the various challenges faced by the industry and continue to attract the very best talent to the company. “Looking ahead, one of the key challenges that will be vital for us to address is how best to ensure that we maximize our efforts, by scaling up our operations and assure our budget investments goes a long-way. “For this reason, we believe that the creation of effective virtual education programs, along with the development of Centers of Expertise, and a close integration between Corporate Learning

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) is an internationally recognised body supporting paediatricians through its commitment to building a healthier future for children and young people across the world. We invited Louise Frayne to tell us more about how the organisation is defining the way children are treated through the implementation of its standards. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health is responsible for postgraduate training of paediatricians in the UK, providing its members with a package of unique benefits including face to face courses and e-learning resources. The RCPCH works with partners to improve child health through research, standards, quality improvement and policy, both in the UK and globally. It also engages with the media, government, NHS, charities and other stakeholders to advocate for better child health. Louise discusses this important work and how the organisation strives to provide the very highest quality of support to its staff. “At the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, our aim is to have an enviable reputation as an employer of choice and to attract the brightest and the best. Professional development is the cornerstone of our offering both in terms of attracting talent and retention. “Key to our success is the licence to be creative and the appetite of our staff group to continuously develop and improve. It is this creativity and our commitment to innovation that really sets us apart. We are continuously striving to improve what we do and offer, and we always challenge ourselves to think outside the box.” Competition from others is always at the forefront of the organisation’s mind and consequently, it aims evaluate and review on a consistent basis to make sure it remains at the forefront of innovation in the industry. Louise describes the process the organisation goes through whenever it creates a new training programme in order
to ensure that it is as relevant as possible to the needs of its staff. “In order to support our staff we aim to always lead by example and set best practice. When we start working on a new project we initially set a very clear return on investment and pilot the initial concept to prove it works. Following on from this we capture the lessons learned, reflect on them and harness ideas for improvement, then evaluate all training programmes to Kirkpatrick Level 3. Finally, we develop a clear communications plan articulating the benefits of the training before we release it. “Through this step by step procedure we are able to ensure that we provide the training that our staff need and that is up to date across the latest, most relevant industry thinking and regulations.” The College has over 17,000 members and fellows and employs over 150 staff. The London office is situated close to Holborn and Chancery Lane tube stations. Staff are also in serviced offices in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Louise outlines why the use of a central location supports the firm and enables it to extend its reach. “As a national organisation, with a central location in London we are able to extend our influence far and wide and support staff across the country. Staff have a central point of contact and always know where to find us.” In her concluding comments Louise outlines the organisation’s future plans to develop its service offering and provide an even greater range of vital services.

Best Humanitarian Aid HR Director - Greater New York
David Epstein is Director of Domestic Human Resources for the US office of Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization. We invited him to tell us more about his role in this fascinating and vital organisation. David is Director of Domestic Human Resources for the US office of Doctors Without Borders/MSF-USA, an organization that operates in more than 70 countries. Prior to joining MSF-USA, David was Director of Human Resources at the New York Foundling Hospital Center for Pediatric, Medical and Rehabilitative Care, Inc. (Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center) where he received the NYAHSA (now LeadingAge New York) Professional of the Year Award for his contributions to paediatric long-term care. David, who is also on the faculty of National Paralegal College, discusses his current role in Doctors Without Borders. “In my role as Director of Domestic Human Resources, I provide HR leadership and strategic HR council to the Management Team, for which I am a member. Strategic areas include recruitment and retention, HR legal and compliance, benefits and compensation, performance management, and training and development. My aim is to be able to help our employees succeed, and help with their career growth and development. I have worked hard to create tools to help them succeed such as coaching, training and on-line learning.” One of Doctors Without Borders’ key pillars in domestic HR is career growth and development, and, as David explains, a critical component of this is training, which is why the organisation is constantly innovating its training offering. “In order to continue to build upon our training offering and better support our staff, this year, we launched an e-learning platform, “MSF-Campus,” which enables staff to take courses
from a wide range of topics. We have a mobile, global workforce, so these courses may be accessed, anytime, anywhere from multiple devices. We are looking at expanding the medical course offerings as well for staff located globally. “Fundamentally, it is my belief that a training initiative needs proper planning, ensuring that the outcome meets the objectives. For me, this starts with a needs analysis to analyse the training gaps and needs of the organization. From this, a training plan can be developed which will meet the organization’s needs.” Ultimately, David is excited for the future and wants to build upon his current success in this vital role and provide further support for his organization. “Moving forward, I hope to continue to be an HR leader that helps my organization succeed, because this success helps our wonderful staff that fulfils our mission both in headquarters and in field missions.”

Best Executive Business Training - Spain
Escuela De Mentoring is a Spanish mentoring school offering a wide range of solutions to clients to enhance their corporate persona. We invited Executive Director Maria Luisa de Miguel to tell us more. Escuela De Mentoring draws on over 14 years of industry excellence to offer the knowledge, experience and services that clients need to succeed. The Mentoring School has extensive experience in the field of mentoring: research and study, design and execution of programs, mentoring teams, research work, coordination of mentoring programs and the development of mentoring schools within organizations, ensuring that clients can rest assured that their needs will be met. In order to assess the clients’ needs the firm works hard to ensure that it fully understands them, communicating with clients from the very start to gain an insight into their work and what they want from the mentoring services they are purchasing. It is this supportive, collabertive approach which is crucial to the firm’s success, as Maria emphasises. “Here at Escuela De Mentoring we work with using own methodology that has been validated over the last eight years. What differentiates us is the integration of R + D + I in the mentoring services we provide. This is achieved through continuous research to improve knowledge about this practice, learning through experience in the development of mentoring programs, and innovation arising from the evaluation of programs. We also take feedback from the participants and our community mentoring network. “This community network mentoring is designed to provide a network of relationships between stakeholders that enhance the benefits and outcomes of mentoring, to generate a culture of mentoring in the organization and to promote change and learning within it.” In addition to mentoring, the Mentoring School provides a range of extra services including organizational and team coaching, leadership and team
management, organizational change management, talent development. As such the firm has gained a strong insight into the workings of its clients over the years, which, as Maria explains, has allowed the firm to expand its service offering and provide the solutions its users really need. “What we have been discovering over the years is that, through the implementation of mentoring programs in companies, we can also improve leadership, talent management, knowledge management, organizational learning etc, because the knowledge we have of the company and its people is very deep and that allows us to detect concrete needs and design other responses and interventions in other fields much more effective.” This knowledge also extends to the industry itself, and Maria has a strong knowledge of the corporate landscape which she is eager to share with us. “Personally, I believe that the great change that has been talked about for years, but has not really been address, is working with people, putting people at the center of organizations. Developing "intra-strategies" for employees to the same extent and level as strategies are developed for clients and markets. Conceiving the customer experience and improving service delivery from the employee experience. “In overcoming this challenge mentoring has much to contribute, because it is a methodology to work with people, build relationships and manage change.” Moving forward, the firm has a number of exciting plans as it seeks to grow and expand in order to support a wider range of clients with all their mentoring needs. “Expansion is our core focus looking

to the future, and as such we plan to continue to grow our network of industry contacts, as well as expanding the school internationally and increasing the number of our publications related to mentoring, leadership and talent development. Executive Coach of the Year 2016 - London
Adina Tarry Adina Tarry is an Accredited Coach, Business Psychologist and Organisational Development Consultant, with an extensive delivery portfolio in Coaching, Psychometric Assessments, Talent and Change Management, as well as Strategic HR. We invited her to tell us more about her work and how she aims to change the lives and businesses of her clients. Adina Tarry is an independent consultant, working with individuals and teams to support them to achieve both personal wellness and a high business performance. Adina, who draws on many years of experience to deliver her services, talks us through how she provides the very highest quality service to her clients at all times. “My role is wide reaching, and involves coaching, mentoring, training, businesses psychology, management and leadership development, and HR and business strategy consulting services. My over 25 years’ experience in business delivery and consulting, enable me to establish trust and credibility and use different aspects of my expertise, tailoring my solutions to meet the individual needs of my clients. I have expertise in L&D and I appreciate the strategic challenges that today’s business world is facing. As such I enjoy delivering a portfolio of services that fits perfectly with the wide agenda of the HR function and the needs of people in business. “As a polymath I have the appetite and ability, to integrate strategy and blue sky thinking with operational precision. I enjoy “dreaming” the possible, then making it “come to life”. and I look for working partnerships with those who also envision a better future for their business, to define it and then implement that vision, together. “Overall I believe that specialisation defines our times, but my offering is different and broader. Some decision makers choose to remain risk averse and stick to a safe narrow requirement brief, others appreciate my offering of multiple sets of skills, as a complementary and relatively rare
package of value add. My integrated proposition offers those who work with me, more than they require; additional areas of expertise, merged in the one person; a polymath instead of a specialist.” Within the consultancy market as a whole, the financial crisis has caused significant structural changes in the market: consulting services moved in house, small and medium companies taken over by global providers, commoditised services and plummeting prices, procurement and assessment centres taking over the acquisitions of services, all to save costs. Adina outlines her views on this development and how she has adapted her business to work around it. “Many question the impact of cost cutting, on the quality of consultancy services, as they have become today, but as yet, I have seen no significant corrective reaction. In the meantime, instead of participating in assessment centres, beauty parades and chemistry meeting - which aim for a different type of supplier - I focus on fewer but more meaningful conversations, to define needs and solutions and find compatibilities. Instead of a “gig” – in the new “gig economy” – I pursue a personal and authentic dialogue, as a stronger foundation for a real and hopefully lasting business partnership. “Fundamentally, it is hard to foresee the future at a time when technology and populism push the boundaries of the known into an uncharted new order. The future remains unknown, but what we definitely know is that the uncertainty and shifting patterns of our time are stressing organisations and
18 l CV HR & Training Awards 2016

individuals alike. This situation will not change in the short term. Instead, our reality may get more complicate and unpredictable. What organisations, decision makers and the HR function need to acknowledge is that this is the very time when business leaders particularly, need support, more than ever, because leaders weakened by uncertainty cannot instil confidence and a sense of direction in their staff.” Ultimately, Adina is keen to leave behind a legacy and share her vast wealth of knowledge and experience with others.
“Having accumulated so much life and work experience I am now keen to pass this on to others and help them develop into strong consultants who will carry on my work. Therefore, I embrace opportunities for knowledge exchange, such as publishing, public speaking, pro bono work, and lecturing, in order to share my knowledge. “In the last five years I have worked with younger generations and new business settings - creating an inter-generational collaboration, complementary and unbeatable in the possibilities it

opens. Beyond the rhetoric that may set generations apart, there is an exceptional advantage that comes from combining wisdom and experience with innovation and technology, that waits to be tapped, and this will be my focus moving forward.”

Best Environmentally-Conscious Engineering Consultancy - Saudi Arabia
Archen Engineering Consultant & Project Management is a full service provider for engineering and security projects. We invited Antoine Hanna, Head of Operations, to talk us through how the firm has come to achieve its current success through its dedication to excellence. Founded in 1989, Archen is a full service provider for Engineering and Project Management Services for the construction industry. Since inception the firm have developed an extensive, loyal client base and a portfolio that includes the most impressive, noteworthy engineering in the gulf region. This was achieved by combining innovation and creativity with successful project delivery services for any type of project, from large scale government mixed technology security projects to luxurious hotels and private residences. The firm’s design and engineering services span the whole life cycle of a project, including architectural concept and design; schematics; detailed designs; structural, mechanical and electrical engineering; plumbing and HVAC; interior design, fit outs; and IT architecture, design and systems. With a vast portfolio of completed projects across the commercial, residential, industrial and public sector markets, Archen has the experience and knowledge to offer clients the services they require. It is this dedication to quality which is central to the firm’s approach, and this was achieved through a focus on providing staff with the tools to support clients throughout the process, as Antoine explains. “Here at Archen we aim at building firm and solid relationship among all staff and employees of the company, based on mutual respect, and under internal clear and transparent regulations so that we have been taking advantage of this relationship to develop the individual staff technically and administratively.
Experiences are exchanged horizontally among peers and colleagues and vertically among superiors and subordinates, under direct supervision of specialized departments, yet imparting the required training (domestically and abroad) on the already available expertise in order to acquire a professional team by all accounts. “As a central part of this approach Archen has given priority to the assessment of the individual and general performance on regular basis, based on sophisticated scientific standards, which take into account the internal and external factors impacting the success of the overall performance and clients’ satisfaction. The continuous assessment (quantitative, qualitative, 360° evaluations, performance ratings etc) is the basic fuel for the discovery of HR development needs and the way to bridge them by direct training through development programs, such as participation in scientific and administrative courses, seminars, and lectures, or indirectly through daily contacts and exchange of experiences with the company’s experts and specialists, in a family atmosphere. “It is recognized that accumulation of experiences, along with the use thereof in the right place, leads to realization of desired and targeted result. Therefore, we have been able to build a special task force that has been enjoying the satisfaction of our clients, through professionalism and transparent dealing in the course of providing high quality consultation and advisory services. Accordingly, this cosy atmosphere leads to clarity of vision and thoughtful staff development, which will reflect positively on the productivity and quality.”
22 l CV HR & Training Awards 2016
Ultimately, it is the firm’s focus on valuing client relations and stability which has assured the lasting success of both Archen and its clients, and as such the firm will continue to build upon this success moving forward by continuing to adhere to this strategy, as Antoine concludes. “A decade ago, some people thought that the use of machine will lead to the phasing out of the labour force, but the reality proved that the need tended towards relying on expertise in the management of machinery. Thus, we expect training in the future to become the first need of all companies and therefore, in the future we may witness the establishment of separate training sections under each department, regardless of whether its scope of work is administrative or technical. “As such our Receipt of 2016 Resources and Training Award is a great responsibility and weight on
our shoulders, and what was a dream few years ago, has become a reality today. Our goal from now onwards is to maintain what we have achieved. In the Development and Operation Dept., we are considering establishment of Archen Institute of Science and Administration, so that we can share with the students our scientific and practical expertise. Registration in the Institute will be available to whoever completed his secondary education, in the hope to award today's students prosperous future, as homelands are built by the forearms of their youth.”

Best for Leadership Development Coaching - South East England
Catherine Gorham Catherine Gorham is an experienced coach and consultant in leadership and organisational development with a proven track record of impacting on organisational effectiveness. We invited her to tell us more about her innovative approach and how she supports businesses and individuals to achieve the success they want. Drawing on her previous experience in leadership development and organisational change as an internal coach and consultant, including at the Cabinet Office and within the NHS, Catherine Gorham now runs a well established independent consultancy, delivering a portfolio of services across a range of sectors. “As an experienced executive coach, I offer a safe, non-judgemental and creative space for individuals to learn more about themselves and how they can be at their best as leaders. My intention is always to invite clients to bring their whole selves – including the parts they don’t understand or appreciate - by working at the edges of conscious awareness and exploring what lies beyond, they discover new choices in their personal leadership approach and identify actions to achieve a sustainable change. “I also offer support to senior teams who may, for example, be more effective by learning to have difficult conversations safely with a deeper level of listening, honesty, challenge and mutual support; the rest of the organisation can benefit from consistency and authenticity in their leadership. “My passion for the outdoors has led me to integrate this into my coaching practice, where appropriate, with accelerated results. One client of mine poetically described his experience of being coaching on the beach as “utilising in unison the natural contours of the outside to stimulate the inner contours of the mind.” Even when working remotely via phone/ Skype, I often apply some of the same techniques to unstick deep-rooted
thinking patterns. Ultimately, what sets Catherine apart is her specialism in outdoor coaching; she is eager to emphasise its powerful impact: “This is more than just going for a walk, although that can be really valuable too: using the natural environment as a resource is at the cutting edge of coaching practice. I have developed specialist expertise for working in this way which requires much greater containment of an otherwise potentially unboundaried space. The combined effect of the outdoors (e.g. a London park), connection with nature and physical movement can enable an internal openness for individuals to explore new perspectives on old, unhelpful habits – whether that be responses under stress, a personal leadership style or deep rooted limiting beliefs. I have been privileged to witness incredible flashes of insight and a shift in behaviour from just one outdoor session. Another huge benefit of outdoor coaching is that individuals find their unique way of drawing on the natural resources around them so they can continue their learning beyond the sessions. It also complements the general move towards 'green prescribing', recently recognised by the King's Fund as having positive wellbeing outcomes. “As a qualified coaching supervisor, I help coaches to explore their own practice and the patterns they inadvertently bring into their client relationships; for internal coaching networks, this may include overcoming the potential blind spot caused by being
24 l CV HR & Training Awards 2016
immersed in their clients' organisational culture. I take every opportunity to share with other coaches my expertise, passion and respect for our beautiful planet.

Best for Executive Coaching - South East England
Jane Adshead-Grant is an experienced Executive Coach supporting a range of clients to achieve the personal and professional development they need. We invited to Jane to tell us more about her work and how she has come to achieve the success she enjoys today. Jane Adshead-Grant is a professional certified coach with the International Coach Federation and accredited Time to ThinkTM coach, facilitator and teacher. In her opening comments she discusses her work and how, with her help, clients are able to transform their lives and achieve their ambitions. “Through my work as a coach I help individuals and groups to become more effective in who they are and what they do. I provide the time, space and listening for them to think, which they often do not have in their busy corporate lives. Drawing on my expertise and knowledge I help them get clarity, confidence and courage so that they achieve what they want for themselves and their business.
Pioneered by Nancy Kline, bestselling author and exceptional teacher, the Thinking Environment accreditation is only a small part of Jane’s expertise, which also includes being a professional certified coach with the International Coach Federation. In addition, her work is underpinned by a post graduate diploma in psychological coaching and NLP coaching certificate which enables Jane to bring a blended approach to her coaching practice. She outlines the latest trends she is noticing through her work and how her approach helps her to support clients in adapting to the stresses and strains of modern corporate life.
“As a result of our working together my clients have, for example, achieved the promotion they had wanted, won an award for their leadership and contribution in their organisation, secured a 6-figure salaried new job, won a 2-year contract worth over a £1 million, landed their dream role and achieved a more fulfilling role at work and enjoyed deeper relationships with those they love. These results were achieved by my clients because through our work together I challenge and support them to think independently and courageously. I encourage them through experimentation to develop new impactful habits for sustainable results so that they develop deeper selfawareness of who they are, what they want and how they can achieve that.”
“Increasingly, I am experiencing individuals who are challenged by lack of time and space they have to think well for themselves. Individuals who assume that quick fire conversations, interrupting others to get their voice heard and making immediate judgements are the best way to increase performance. Coupled with the challenges of increasingly complex technology, I experience individuals who feel isolated and no longer feel they belong. It is for these reasons, I believe that creating an environment for others to experience the very opposite of these, is essential. I am convinced that my work assists in developing leaders who grow other leaders. Leaders who create an opportunity for others to lead and succeed so that everyone feels they matter and can perform at their best. After all, this is what both individuals and organisations desire.”
As one of only eight individuals in the South East England who are accredited to coach, facilitate and train others in creating a Thinking Environment®, Jane has the expertise and skills to support clients and guide them to success.
This supportive listening process begins from the very start of the process, and as such when she first starts working with a new client or group, Jane always aims to connect with them to establish what they want to achieve and why. Together
26 l CV HR & Training Awards 2016
they then work on what successful outcomes would look and feel like. Fundamentally, whilst the market is increasingly competitive, Jane believes that this is justified by the growing demand to be more effective in the workplace and the need for more accredited coaches increases. As such, moving forward she will be supporting a wider range of clients through her online portal, ensuring that she is able to offer her services to a wider array of clients. “Overall my aspiration is to impact many more people so that others can benefit in achieving higher performance for themselves and their teams. To do this, I have created an online platform www.janeadsheadgrant.com and have developed an online version of my coaching programme for others to have access to anytime, anywhere. I look forward to popularising this innovative platform and taking advantage of the opportunities this creates for my clients in the future.

Best Personal & Professional Coaching Company - South England & Disability & Inclusion Consultant of the Year - Greater London
Luminate provides a training, coaching and consultancy service to people with disabilities and organisations that employ them or work with them. We invited Founder Roland Chesters to tell us more. Luminate is dedicated to helping individuals achieve success and overcome the challenges they face and support organisations to create a more productive workforce, by developing happy and fulfilled employees. Roland talks us through his passion for supporting the differently able and how he works to ensure that both they and their employers receive the support and advice they need. “To me, there is no greater reward than enabling a person who has felt constricted by their disability to find their voice and achieve their true potential. The impact of lighting a flame of passion, however flickering it may be, in someone’s heart can never be undervalued. My overall aim is to raise awareness and contribute in making a positive change in individuals, in organisations and in society to enable and empower disabled people to have the same choices and quality of life as every other person. I am passionate about delivering inclusion and equality for people. As a relatively new organisation the steps might still be small, but the vision is great.” What sets Luminate apart from others in the industry is Roland’s own lived experience of being diagnosed with a life-threatening disability ten years ago that completely changed the direction of his life. During this experience Roland has encountered bias and prejudice which have turned him into a strong and fervent advocate of seeing an ability in everybody, no matter what kind of disability they may have. He outlines the process he goes through when he starts work on a new project, as getting it right from the very beginning is crucial. “When starting work with a new client, it is very important to begin by
establishing what the objectives of the project or training programme are. Without those clearly identified aims it is impossible to construct and deliver a learning intervention that will meet the needs of the participant(s). Close and continuous collaboration with the commissioners of the piece of work is essential, as is seeking feedback (formal and informal) for those on the receiving end of the learning. Part of the joy for me in working with people with disabilities is that many of us are not backwards in giving forthright, honest and constructive criticism.” Within the wider market, there are many recent developments in training which affect disabled workers. Different disabilities mean that learning has to be delivered in different ways to ensure that it is fully inclusive and accessible. The growth of online learning platforms for example means that a sizeable proportion of the disabled population is potentially excluded from that kind of learning. Roland believes that key to working around issues such as this is for employers and training providers to look beyond the supposed limitations of disabilities and instead build upon the skills these staff have. “Fundamentally, we live in a society where disability will become increasingly prevalent. Many of us will have a disability in our lifetime, whether temporary or longer term. Despite the notion that disability is limiting, actually disabled people have positive attributes that can be developed. Often these may not be understood or appreciated – even by the person themselves. Recruitment, retention and development of employees with a disability need to be an essential part of HR work.” Recently, government measures have
28 l CV HR & Training Awards 2016
meant that more and more people who had not been able to work due to a disability, some for a considerable period of time, are now having to seek employment. For many, the enforced period of unemployment has resulted in a loss of confidence, in ‘frozen’ skills and in a perception that they may be of little value to society. As such, now, more than ever before, there is a need to reverse that psychology and assist the individual and the employer to recognise that disabled people have unique and special skills and bring with them a wealth of talent, resilience and flexibility that nondisabled people may not always have. Roland concludes by discussing how he intends to leave his mark on this vital and ever evolving market, and most importantly, make an impact on the lives of people living with disabilities. “Currently Surrey, where Luminate is based, has approximately 55,00 people of working age who have a moderate physical disability, 28,000 who have a moderate or severe hearing impairment and over 3000 who have a borderline personality disorder. The size and diversity of the population in London and the business in which they work mean that the need for the kind of service I deliver is ever growing, offering exciting new opportunities for me to continue to have a constructive bearing on people’s lives. “Ultimately, I want to be able to leave some kind of life affirming influence on individual existences. Having been told 10 years ago that I had two weeks to live makes you re-evaluate your priorities. I want to know that I will leave behind a positive legacy, and this will be my ongoing focus moving forward.”

Best Occupational Psychology Company - South England
Oxford Psychometrics is a team of business psychologists that specialise in talent development in the workplace. We spoke to Dr. Chintha Dissanayake to find out more about the company and the range of services it provides. In today’s economic climate, people are routinely expected to deal with intense pressures that drive them to deliver a great deal, with fewer resources, at a greater pace. Add to this the blurring of boundaries between work and homelife, the strain on individuals and teams to perform has never been greater. Oxford Psychometrics utilises the latest developments in the field of Occupational Psychology to develop solutions for individuals and organisations, to bring out their best. By working in close partnership with the client, they find ways that best optimise talent and performance, and provide a bespoke service tailored to their unique needs, as Chintha outlines. “Here at Oxford Psychometrics our overall aim has always been to deliver a very personalised service. We go to great lengths to get to know our clients well before engaging in any work with them, as we believe that building trust is a two-way process. We build upon that relationship to ensure that each client receives 100% of our attention and expertise in order to help them develop the best solution for their individual needs. “Fundamentally we believe that it is only by getting to know our clients well that we can provide the best service for them. The mutual relational confidence that is built enables us to probe deeper to find resolutions that might otherwise be missed. Furthermore, as a totally independent team of Chartered Occupational Psychologists, we are not tied to any test publisher or product. This freedom to choose the best tools to help our client sets us apart from others, as it offers true flexibility to serve our customers with the best of what is available.”
As Chartered Occupational Psychologists, everyone at Oxford Psychometrics has undergone intensive supervised training, often lasting over 8-10 years with ongoing professional development to update of their expertise, ensures that solutions they offer are current and highly focused. An important part of this is in being able to diagnose the underlying problems and offering appropriate actions and solutions to target those problems. Good communication and relations with the client is vital in this diagnostic phase, as without it, accurate analysis is difficult, if not impossible. The team at Oxford Psychometrics are able to ensure successful outcomes each time, by working with the client rather than on them, which can at times be a challenge, as Chintha discusses. “Conflict in the workplace is a major problem in the workplace, and each year costs billions to the economy, in lost workdays due to stress and illness, and loss of productivity. Oxford Psychometrics has developed services that help organisations develop Conflict Confidence in individuals and teams, as well as workplace mediation. We believe that this provides a more holistic approach for our clients by building their talent pool in a supportive way, rather than allowing it to flow down a negative path. “As Business Psychologists, we are often called upon when things have already become unmanageable. However, we are now noticing that savvier businesses are engaging chartered occupational psychologists at earlier stages in their change management process, and discovering that a smoother transition can actually be achieved with a much better impact on their bottom line.” Ultimately in times of significant change,
30 l CV HR & Training Awards 2016
the greatest skill an organisation can develop is adaptability. There is growing evidence that teams that adapt best are also resilient. Team resilience, however goes well beyond individual resilience, and requires top down commitment to build and maintain. Occupational psychology is playing a key role in helping shape organisations, small and large, to build their capacity to adapt to the uncertainties that the future holds. As such Chintha concludes by outlining how Oxford Psychometrics intends to continue to develop and support clients as it looks to the future. “Moving forward, we hope to continue serving all our clients by providing them with a highly personalised service that is built on mutual trust and respect. In 2017, we are looking forward to supporting them on their journey to success, as they balance the challenges and opportunities faced.

Best Business Training Consultancy & Excellence Award for Coach Skills Training - Scotland
Rathmhor specialises in management development, coaching for individuals and teams, and training consultancy. We caught up with Principal Consultant Campbell Ford to find out more. Rathmhor is a small professional development consultancy offering bespoke training to a wide range of clients which cover a wide spectrum of businesses and public sector organisations, including specialist leadership development consultancies, SMEs, large scale training and development providers, European financial services companies, and most recently, a global IT services group. Campbell talks us through his role and how he aims to offer the very highest standard of service to his clients. “As the Principal Consultant at Rathmhor, I design, manage and deliver workshops and development programmes for a range of levels of management. I am a qualified and experienced coach, working with people from varied backgrounds on anything from one-off coaching sessions through to planned coaching engagements spanning several months. I also conduct organisational development reviews, on behalf of an established management consultancy, helping SME businesses to tackle the growing pains and unforeseen challenges of expanding or reinventing their operations in what remains a really challenging economic environment. “Personally, in order to offer a truly bespoke service tailored to meet the needs of our clients I try to make everything as individual as possible, whilst retaining the core messages of best practice, proven models and great real-world examples. I want the people we work with to go away from a coaching session or workshop or programme with more enthusiasm than they arrived, with some clear steps they will take to tackle that big challenge. They should go forward with a belief in all the hard work, research, writing and trialling which people like Sir John Whitmore, Dan Goleman, Stephen Covey and so many others have undertaken over the years. I want them to celebrate
their own hard work and to be inspired to take on challenging or even courageous goals, and put their learning into practice.” Central to the firm’s approach, as Campbell explains, is its focus on communicating with and listening to the client. “When we work with our clients we always aim to listen to them in order to fully understand their needs right from the very beginning. We then align the material or event or conversation to what we hear and hold them accountable for making their own changes for the better. Central to our success is the fact that we set clear yet courageous goals, and cultivate a network of colleagues, partners and clients who will testify to the quality of what we do, time after time.” Looking ahead, both Rathmhor and Campbell have a number of exciting projects on the horizon, as he concludes. “From the company’s perspective, Rathmhor aspires to continue partnering with other great professional development consultancies and to deliver high quality, memorable work for our clients as we look to the future. Partnering with larger organisations has been an important part of Rathmhor’s development and I firmly believe it will continue to be. By remaining relatively small and nimble, we can react and support the buyers and the recipients of training, coaching or consultancy in a personal and flexible way. Personally, I am invigorated by my latest project, managing a team of facilitators and coaches who are delivering training support for the forthcoming Scottish local government elections in May 2017, Rathmhor’s biggest undertaking to date. I am looking forward to the opportunities this brings and am thoroughly enjoying my leadership role in the project.”

Based on more than two decades of experience with personality styles, Take Flight Learning is the leading personality styles training company in the United States. After training tens of thousands of people in the DISC styles, CEO Merrick Rosenberg breathed new life into this age-old model with his books, Taking Flight! and The Chameleon. Take Flight Learning was originally founded in 2012 as a spinoff of Team Builders Plus with a focus of selling DISC training products and services. Merrick Rosenberg and Jeffrey Backal founded Team Builders Plus in 1991. As one of the first team building companies in the United States, their goal was to help companies build collaboration and create a cohesive culture. Over the years, they developed a series of engaging and action-oriented team building programs that range from fun team retreats to intensive team interventions, and everything in between. Team Builders Plus led the way in evolving team building from basic outdoor exercises to a wide array of activities including building bikes for at-risk children, leading interactive scavenger hunts, creating and facilitating web-based team surveys and delivering team development sessions for senior teams. Shortly after starting the company, they began leading DISC personality
styles training programs. President Jeffrey Backal explained, “After Merrick Rosenberg released Taking Flight! in 2012, the entire trajectory of our company changed. By linking the four DISC styles to four birds, we found that people began integrating the personality styles into everything they did. Organizations were changing because of how we reinvented the DISC styles.” Simply put, Take Flight Learning reimagined the age-old DISC model. By linking the styles to birds and providing a more brain-friendly and engaging training program, Take Flight Learning developed the foundation to dominate the DISC market. As a result of the rapid success of their new company, Team Builders Plus was rebranded as the team building division of Take Flight Learning in 2016. Until the release of Taking Flight!, the four styles had been represented by the letters D, I, S and C. By representing the styles with visually appealing eagles, parrots, doves, and owls, not only do the styles come to life, but people can more easily identify with the characteristics typically associated with the birds. The birds imprint upon the mind and users retain style insights more effectively with the birds than with the letters D-I-S-C. As Merrick comments, “Once we introduce the four styles into an organization, they go viral. Throughout the companies we train, people are constantly asking each other, ‘Which

bird are you?’ Reimaging DISC has helped to define the Taking Flight brand as memorable, engaging, and transformative.” Throughout the U.S., Take Flight Learning is unifying the fragmented DISC styles market by building a recognizable brand. Approximately half of all DISC training programs are currently conducted internally within organizations. The other half are led by consultants, primarily from one to two person firms. Take Flight Learning not only provides training programs based on the four styles, but also offers certifications and training materials for companies and consultants to lead the training themselves. In 2016, the DISC universe exploded with Merrick’s second book, The Chameleon: Life-Changing Wisdom for Anyone who has a Personality or Knows Someone Who Does. The book was built upon the foundation provided in Taking Flight!. As Merrick stated, “Rather than a dry, clinical analysis of personality, I wanted to bring the DISC styles to life in a fun and accessible way.”
phase of prospecting and qualifying leads to maintaining the relationship and creating post- sales opportunities. Understanding the styles enables the sales person to adapt their approach based on who they are selling to, resulting in more closed sales. Through the insights contained in Taking Flight!, The Chameleon, the Taking Flight with DISC program and Chameleon Selling program, people are embracing the four birds not just within the workplace, but also in their personal relationships. Ultimately, Executive teams, managers, sales professionals and people at all levels have integrated the four bird styles into everything they do. From coaching and delegating to communicating and selling, people are applying the four styles and making an impact on the way their firm operates.
Their new Chameleon Selling program takes a fresh approach to sales training. Sales teams learn how to infuse style into everything they do from the initial

Best Leadership Development Company - Midlands
The Forton Group Limited develops high-potential people, emerging talent, managers and senior leaders through management training, leadership courses and coaching services. We invited Helen CatonHughes to tell us more. Incorporated in 2002, Forton is a global specialist in leadership development that researches, designs, runs and evaluates leadership development programmes for better leadership. They also deliver accredited coach training for better-quality coaching of leaders, managers and supervisors to clients around the world. Helen outlines the firm’s aims and the strategies it implements, both to achieve these and differentiate itself from its competitors. “Here at Forton our overall aim is for leaders to know what they need to do to be better at leadership, and that they have the confidence to put those leadership behaviours and styles into practice, every day. This means that every member of the team can feel that their skills and workplace contribution are valued - by their colleagues and leaders. We want better bosses, who know what they are doing, so that everyone in the workplace feels fulfilled and delivers outstanding results. “In order to achieve this, and to mark ourselves out as the best possible option for our clients, we have a clear, understandable approach to leadership development that is based on best practice of what works. Leaders, managers and supervisors need only to learn some straightforward skills and steps – and then apply them in the workplace – to deliver results. “We do not make it complicated, and as such our process is not theoretical; instead it is highly practical and resultsoriented. It is, however, based on the notion of ‘transformational leadership’; which means that leaders need to walk the walk; not just talk the talk. “As a core part of our process we work closely with clients to identify their
biggest challenges and the outcomes that they are looking for; whether that is in the leaders, the culture of leadership in the organisation, or in team-members. We then tailor our training programmes to fit those needs – and we put return on investment (ROI) measures in place to ensure that we can demonstrate the practical benefits to the organisation of what we do. “For example, we have a number of practical and affordable ways to support skills implementation back in the workplace. It is not enough for people to learn the skills in theory, it is when we go back and try and apply them that the challenges start. So we deliver 1-1 and team coaching, action learning and other action-oriented projects, facilitated by our coaches and tutors, to make the skills real and valuable. An independent University of Queensland Postgraduate report found that people apply and value our skills years after attending our training courses.” Moving forward, the executive and leadership coaching market looks set for a number of exciting changes, and as such Helen is keen to emphasise her firm’s commitment to supporting clients through these to ensure they get the most out of Forton’s services. “Looking ahead, we foresee the leadership coaching field bringing a shift away from individual practices to a more collegiate marketplace, where an organisation like ours provides a full service for leadership development. This includes talent identification, 1-1 and team coaching, training in leadership skills and supervision of in-house trainers and coaches. This is good news as it is more affordable for organisations, delivers to a high standard and maintains professionalism.

“In addition, 2017 also brings the new requirement for employers with over 150 staff to contribute to the ‘apprenticeship’ levy. Our commitment to qualifications, for anyone looking to lead and manage people, means that we can support client organisations through this radical change. We feel committed and ready to support clients through the leadership challenges ahead. Our overall aim for the future is to increase the number of qualified leaders and managers globally; at the same time reassure people that ‘leadership’ is not a complex, rare and unattainable position suitable only for heroes. Rather, it is a set of practical and achievable skills that anyone with commitment can develop, and we look forward to helping as many people as possible to do so over the months and years to come.”
