We invited Laura from the salon to talk us through the range of services the salon provides. Established in in 2007 by salon owner Theo Silveston Kink Hair embodies his vision to create an environment where all his clients could enjoy a relaxed, family atmosphere together with being provided with a high-end service. Laura discusses how the salon works to achieve this vision and offer clients the very highest standard of service. “Here at Kink Hair, we work with a range of clients from our regular weekly blow drys, to clients looking for on trend cuts and colours and we also complete celebrity hair for events. We offer a full range of hair treatments, including conditioning treatments and keratin smoothing all the way to hair extensions. We attend seminars on the latest products to the market, ensuring we can help our clients achieve the healthy hair they want to maintain. “To ensure that we offer the very highest standards of service, we have developed a salon protocol to enable our staff to offer a consistent service across the whole salon, from apprentice to style director. We have regular team meetings to discuss how we can improve our service and also complete client questionnaires to help us identify any areas we may need to improve on.”

Since the recession, people are happy to spend money as long as they feel they get complete value and satisfaction. This means that salons can no longer amble through their days and more focus needs to be on client retention and satisfaction. With so many hair salons for clients to choose from, making sure all aspects of the client’s visit is perfect is imperative to ensuring we are trading for another ten years and more.”

This is something that has increasingly become popular and it meant we had to review the service we were offering in order

Holistic Therapist of the Year 2017 - Devon The Healing Space is an innovative holistic therapy centre run by experienced healer Hilda Kalap. We profile this Devon-based therapist and the services she offers. The Healing Space was established two years ago when its founder Hilda Kalap was living in Bristol. After two decades spent working as a journalist and public relations consultant for organisations such as the Red Cross, where she visited countries affected by conflict and natural disaster, Hilda decided to retrain as a complementary health therapist in her mid40s. In 2013 she embarked on a training programme with renowned American energy healer Donna Eden, author of best-selling ‘Energy Medicine’.

Following two years of study in Eden Energy Medicine (EEM), Hilda qualified as an EEM Certified Practitioner in March 2015, one of the first tranche of 80 practitioners to qualify in Europe.
The former is a charity that operates a donation system which allows those who cannot afford the normal complementary health rates to choose what they can pay ranging from £14 for an hour long session. It ties in with Hilda’s ethos of making healing accessible to as many people as possible. Ola Chiropractic is where she runs her private practice.
She was then inspired to continue her EEM studies for a further year which involved completing 100 case sessions and attending two workshops specialising in heart health and cancer. On completion of this additional study, last year Hilda qualified as an EEM Clinical Practitioner and moved her health practice to Totnes in Devon. EEM uses simple yet profound techniques that work directly with nine energy systems in the body to address energy blockages and activate the body’s natural healing abilities.
Aside from EEM she is also trained in massage, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), matrix re-imprinting, reiki and nutrition. This breadth of knowledge is what she brings to each session with a client and which makes The Healing Space offering so unique. Hilda is also able to work via Skype and so can offer consultations nationally and internationally. Her ability to speak Russian and French fluently means she will be offering online courses within those countries next year.
It combines concepts and procedures from ancient healing traditions such as traditional Chinese medicine with contemporary scientific understanding of health and healing. The aim is to empower people to heal themselves and at the heart of it is a simple five-minute daily energy routine that helps to balance the body’s energies for better health.
As well as running her own practice Hilda has built her brand by working with partner organisations such as organic specialist Neal’s Yard Remedies, national sports and fitness provider MoveGB and Total Wellness Club. She has also volunteered as a massage therapist at the last two Glastonbury Festivals, working in the Disability Field, which is testimony to her commitment to giving back to the community and supporting people through healing.

Within the holistic healing market, Hilda hopes that The Outsiders charity, who organise massage in the Disability Field, succeed in their campaign for the Disability Field to get its own stage at the Festival. “I saw how much mud and rain there was last year and how hard it was for people to leave the field to get to the music. It’s about time things were a little easier for those with disabilities.” Alongside this, Hilda would also like to see more and swifter integration between complementary and allopathic medicine. “Increasingly I am seeing people who say I don’t want to be on this medication for the rest of my life, I’m young and there are side effects. I work part time within an occupational therapy team in a mental health hospital and I would like to see more treatments offered to the patients there – not just medication, psychiatry and CBT for example but Emotional Freedom Techniques – which I have seen to be effective amongst my client group for issues such as low self-esteem, trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, weight loss and phobias. If EFT could be included within the NICE guidelines, then it would be better accepted within the NHS and there would be more funding for it”. Looking ahead, this summer Hilda will be teaching about the impact of electromagnetic fields and some ways to diffuse their effects using energy medicine. She is also publishing her first children’s picture book on the theme of mindfulness.

The ‘5 Pillars of Parenting’ pregnancy to 3 years programme focuses on the emotional development of the baby from pregnancy. More specifically, the programme addresses communicative practices, secure attachment and the bonding process, brain development, post-natal depression and recognising infant behaviour. These sessions enable mothers and fathers to adjust to parenthood and support them in developing parenting plans. Conversely, the 4-11 years programme draws upon models of social learning theory and behavioural interventions used for modelling and shaping behaviour. Our programme is underpinned by systemic thinking in considering wider influences on parenting, such as family and society, and we teach coaching techniques to enable parents to achieve their goals. Jo Baskott tells us more about the firm and the range of products it offers. Sapooni is a family business encompassing three generations, cousins, godparents, in-laws, spouses, friends, and neighbours. Its creative products are handmade in the firm’s idyllic Cornish workshop; a real person measures, weighs, mixes, pours, cuts, labels and wraps each product made by the firm to ensure quality. All the firm’s packaging is recyclable, and its workshop has solar-powered hot water, electricity, and heating so that these products are both lush and sustainable. Founder Jo outlines how this unique business came into being and how far it has come since inception. “At Sapooni our story began when I went on holiday with my family to Cyprus and returned with a bar of olive oil soap, which turned out to be quite awful; grey, no fragrance, wouldn’t lather, and turned into a mushy mess in the shower. When the family moved to Cyprus, I expanded my hobby and started making olive oil soaps using Virgin olive oil collected from the local olive mill. A few bars became a few more, and a business began. When the family moved back to Cornwall in 2013, Sapooni Ltd was born. Sapooni is Greek for Soap; a fitting name for a company which started in Cyprus with a single bar of soap. Today, we are really blessed to have a stunning view of the Tamar River from our workshops.” Looking ahead, Jo’s focus remains on offering the very highest quality products to her clients, as she concludes.
