World of James Herriot Limited FLEETLINE, Paint and Body Centre - Interior View

World of James Herriot Limited

2018 - Yorkshire World of James Herriot allows animal lovers and fans of All Creatures Great and Small to delve into the world of this masterly vet and explore his life and adventures in epic detail, Set in the heart of stunning Herriot Country, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, World of James Herriot is a multi-award-winning, all-weather attraction. World of James Herriot offers visitors a unique insight into the fascinating life and incredibly popular books of James Alfred ‘Alf’ Wight OBE, FRCVS. Using the pseudonym of James Herriot, he started to write at 50 years of age, after being challenged to do so by his wife Joan, and went on to become one of the most popular writers of the twentieth century. Under his pseudonym he wrote his much-loved stories based on his experiences as a young, Thirsk-based vet. His books, selling in their millions throughout the world, resulted in two feature films followed by the popular television series, All Creatures Great and Small, which enjoyed global success in the late 1970s and early 80s. Despite his newfound fame and fortune, James continued to practice as a vet for much of his writing career.

Jim, who also became a vet and partner in the practice, and Rosie, who became a doctor in general practice. Alf served in the Royal Air Force in 1942, moving back to Kirkgate in 1946. He intended to write a book for many years, but with most of his time consumed by veterinary practice and family, his writing ambition remained unfulfilled. After prompting from wife Joan, Alf began to write, and after several rejected stories on other subjects like football, he turned to what he knew best. In 1969 he wrote If Only They Could Talk, published in the UK in 1970, but sales were slow until St. Martin’s Press of New York received a copy and arranged to have the first two books published as a single volume in the United States. The book,

entitled All Creatures Great and Small, was a huge success, resulting in numerous sequels, movies and a successful television adaptation. Alf Wight died in 1995 but his books continue to sell, the television series is still played throughout the world and thousands of visitors continue to flock to World of James Herriot, established in 1999, in his hometown of Thirsk, North Yorkshire. Today, at World of James Herriot, visitors can walk through the world’s most famous vet’s fully-restored 1940s home and surgery in Thirsk. The interactive attraction allows fans to travel back in time to what life was like when James was practicing, see the car Christopher Timothy drove in the BBC TV series, step

into the TV set, try their hand at being a vet and even experience what it was like to hide in a World War 2 air raid shelter. Open seven days a week, the attraction makes for a great dayout for guests of all ages. As an all-weather indoor exhibit, World of James Herriot is perfect for everyone, from families looking to share a weekend activity through to individuals seeking to learn more about James and his work, and group visits seeking to gain an insight into his fascinating life. As a celebration of this quintessentially Yorkshire man, a visit to World of James Herriot is a must for anyone seeking to explore this beautiful region, as well as for fans of James and his work.

James, or Alf Wight, was born in 1916, in Sunderland, England, soon moving to Glasgow, where at the age of 23 he qualified as a veterinary surgeon with Glasgow Veterinary College. In 1940, Alf took a brief job at a veterinary practice in Sunderland, but soon moved to work in a rural practice based at 23 Kirkgate in the town of Thirsk, Yorkshire (better known in his books as Skeldale House in Darrowby), where he was to remain for the rest of his life. In 1941, he married Joan Danbury at St Mary’s Church, Thirsk, and had two children,

YorkTest Laboratories Ltd

Company: YorkTest Laboratories Ltd Contact: Danielle Williams, Corporate Wellness Executive. Address: Genesis 3, Innovation Way, York, YO10 5DQ, UK Phone: 0800 458 2527 Website: www.yorktest.com

YorkTest Laboratories Ltd

the Year 2018 & Award for Excellence YorkTest Laboratories have over 35 years of excellence in laboratory to us about this leading healthcare focused laboratory-based business Since its inception in 1982, YorkTest has not only refined the extensive post-test support its customers receive but also introduced a series of alternative tests to cater for a range of diets. The firm’s services have also developed further through its ongoing scientific research and commitment to sharing the potential of food intolerance (defined as a food-specific IgG antibody reaction) testing as widely as possible. Rachel shares the firm’s mission and explains how this approach helps the company to further provide clients with the highest possible level of service and testing they can truly rely on.

“Here at YorkTest, our mission is to provide exceptional wellness related testing and support services that empower people and businesses to take action to improve their health and quality of life. Our testing is carried out by an expert laboratory team, overseen by Scientific Director, Dr Gill Hart. All that is required from the customer is an easy finger prick blood sample, which can be taken in the comfort of their own home using our simple kit, then posted on to us in a pre-paid envelope. “To further enhance our services and achieve our mission, we take great care to listen to our customers, and going forward we will expand the range of services we offer, conduct innovative research and continue to launch ongoing strategic initiatives. In January, we introduced our most comprehensive food intolerance tests with our premium range, analysing more ingredients than we have before in company history. Testing reactions to 50 additional ingredients to take our total number

of ingredients tested to 208, it is our best value test to date and has also proved to be our most popular. “Last year, we celebrated 35 years of excellence in the field of laboratory diagnostic testing, and in July 2017, Private Equity House KCP acquired a majority stake in our business with a considerable investment of £8.65M.” Alongside its work in the testing market, YorkTest has been working hard over recent months to provide wider training and information on food intolerance and how it can be handled, something Rachel is particularly keen to highlight.

“As well as serving individuals and health and fitness practitioners, we have recently helped many other businesses, from the finance sector, food industry, construction firms to blue chip companies, to address the food intolerances of their workforce. “After all, food intolerance has been associated with a number of disruptive health complaints, such as migraines, fatigue, IBS and even mental conditions including anxiety and depression. The rate of employees suffering from symptoms such as these can have a big impact on absence and productivity levels within a workplace. Our dedicated corporate wellness team have worked with businesses large and small to identify those in the company who are symptomatic and carry out testing so that they can discover their food intolerances. “With extensive post-test support, including consultations with our BANT registered nutritional therapists, employees are then able to replace their ‘trigger foods’ with

nutritious alternatives and optimise their diet. In order to demonstrate the huge potential of food intolerance testing for businesses across the globe, we worked with the Leeds based IT company, Blue Logic, earlier this year to carry out a clinical trial. In total, 26 employees took part in the trial and the majority benefited from this. Just one month after replacing their ‘trigger foods’, 88% of the participants felt an improvement in their general health.” Ultimately, YorkTest has achieved incredible success since it first began, and looking ahead the firm is keen to build upon this and grow even further, as Rachel is proud to conclude. “When we first started, we were trading in just two countries, in the UK and Ireland, and now we trade in 45 across the globe with dozens of international partners. We are continually growing and bringing our food intolerance tests to more people across the world, and as a result are investing in our people.

“On the back of the KCP investment in the summer of 2017, we unveiled a company strategy for each and every member of the YorkTest team to work towards. This 20/20 vision is a plan that outlines how YorkTest will become world-wide leaders in health-related services by the year 2020. To achieve this, we will be moving to a larger office to allow us to increase our workforce further, expand the range of services we offer, conduct innovative research and continue to launch ongoing strategic initiatives. These developments offer our firm many exciting opportunities which we are looking forward to taking advantage of over the years to come.”

 Retearn

Best Procurement Consultancy 2018 security of working for some of the UK’s largest consultancies to following their strong belief At the heart of Retearn approach is its Self-Funded Transformation model, something Simon is particularly keen to highlight.

“At Retearn, we realised through our collective wisdom that most organisations from SMEs to global multinationals to public sector departments are constantly striving to improve, transform and change and typically they look for additional funding to make this happen. Our strong belief is that most organisations should look within first - to cut unnecessary costs, streamline their operations and then invest the money they’ve saved back into the people, processes or technology that will genuinely help them to fly. “SMEs face a specific growth dilemma. Whether they have grown organically or through acquisition they can suddenly find they don’t have a procurement function or one that is fully fledged to allow them to make or mange the savings required. They often then look to hiring a procurement manager or director who then have the challenge of trying to be an expert across numerous categories of spend from Facilities, ICT, Telephony, Fuel, Fleet or Travel, HR, and Professional Services along with other direct spend categories.

“When we first began we recognise this need and work with SMEs to either help them design and build the right procurement target operating model, the processes required to drive efficiency, through to recommending the right team structure and level of experience required. With savings ranging from 3% to 30% and an average ROI greater than 6:1 we can build all of this with clients as we go i.e. it’s self-funded by achieving significant savings as rapidly as possible.” Looking ahead, Simon is keen for Retearn to build upon its current success and share its innovative approach with even more clients, as he concludes.

“Ultimately, the beauty of setting up Retearn is that it has also allowed us to create a culture that is different too. We get to recruit the best in the industry from a skills and experience perspective. Added to that, we are all operational people at heart who love getting our sleeves rolled up to deliver client outcomes. We are open, honest, down to earth and most of all, we are flexible which is important to clients who often need a bespoke or pick-and-mix service. Overall, we love what we do and look forward to doing more of it over the years to come.” Company Name: Retearn Telephone: 01344 874707 Website: www.retearn.co.uk
