In today’s busy households, the contemporary kitchen has the clear advantage. With there seamless and stylish lines, sleek contemporary spaces make it a cinch to stow small appliances and other clutter behind doors, for a tidy look that Mario Kondo would surely approve of.

If you are hunting for a kitchen, stroll over to Eggersmann Toronto. Now in its sixth year, the Summerhill-area shop is the oldest German Kitchen company you have never heard of, unless you have never heard of, unless you have spent time in Europe or are a design aficionado.

The shop has outfitted kitchens for everything from condos in the city to cottages in Muskoka and mansions in Quebec.

The designer Victoria Shaw says that the high-gloss showstopper demo kitchen in the showroom as an example. It was installed six years ago and visitors have handled it regularly since then, but it still looks as spectacular as the day it went in. The magic is in its manufacture. The lacquers are labour intensive. Both products may be made in a factory, but they are not being churned out willy-nilly.

Which is why if you go for one of Eggersmann’s exquisite kitchens, you can expect the highest level of individual service. The company sometimes spends months with other clients designing the kitchen.

Unlike decades ago, when the aproned lady of the house prepped a roast in a tucked-away room, today’s lifestyles have evolved, and so has the kitchen. Often open to the rest of the house, the kitchen serves as a gathering place, a hub to do homework or a spot to entertain friends over cocktails and canapés. As such, its functionality is essential. And since it is out in the open it better look ravishing too.

How a person uses the kitchen is germane to its design. The excitement of building a new home gets lost when you get into the nuts and bolts of where everything goes.

And never assume. It seems like a no-brainer that the client’s coffeemaker should be in the kitchen. Not so as it depends on how you use your home. Luxury homes often have beautiful wings. The clients get up in the morning and they don’t necessary want to go to the kitchen.

Storage is not necessarily on everyone’s wish list. The kitchen is not a storage facility. It is a place to cook and should not be filled on every wall with storage. People love islands because there aren’t cabinets over their heads.
