From the SA President AILA SA hosted the 2017 South Australian Landscape Architecture Awards on Friday 28 July. The fantastic night once again highlighted the quality of works being undertaken by Landscape Architects across South Australia. It was a chance to come together as an institute and celebrate the best in design, leadership and the realisation of quality public spaces across the State. The 2017 Awards Program brought together a high quality collection of local projects, from large town parks in anticipation of new communities, newer greener spaces in older communities, to small spaces that support healing or learning. Each project demonstrated the important role Landscape Architects play in building stronger communities, through a focus on quality in design, collaboration and built outcomes. Over the last two years, AILA SA has found our greatest impact in advocacy to government, in collaboration with our design partners, and in engagement with the public, when we articulate the role landscape architects can play in building stronger healthier communities. Design quality is valued when we demonstrate how it builds stronger communities. Green Infrastructure or environmental stewardship becomes a focus when it is framed through building stronger communities. Through shaping policy on Climate Change, the 30-Year plan for Greater Adelaide, the Planning Development and Infrastructure Act and more recently the Design Guidelines, we find the greatest attention when we frame our advice towards shaping stronger healthier communities. Landscape Architects are in a unique position and at a unique point in time locally to help facilitate crucial conversations between government, the design community and the public towards the planning, design and delivery of a better built environment that contributes to the liveability and vibrancy of South Australia. The diversity of 28 entrants, across 9 categories reveals the many ways the profession of Landscape Architecture is committed to seeing South Australia advance, to build on the quality of life that has Adelaide recognised as the 5th most liveable city to live. Thank you to all who contributed to the success of the 2017 Awards and continuing to raise the profile of the profession across South Australia and the great work we do!

Ben Willsmore AILA SA President

From the Jury The jury would like to thank AILA for the opportunity to consider the entries and congratulates all of the 2017 the award winners. Of the 28 entries, 16 awards have been given. It is evident that the landscape architecture profession is continuing to grow and influence all aspects of the development of our cities, regions and communities. This year’s winning projects reflect how significantly landscape architecture is shaping all scales of projects and the value clients and communities are increasingly placing on design. The award entries have reflected the extraordinary breadth of the profession. Entries ranged from civic spaces strategically designed to underpin future development, healing spaces that support wellbeing and ageing, through to policy development and community engagement. The global shift to more imaginative, active and nature based play was reflected in the number of play spaces entered in this year’s awards. The important role of Landscape Architect’s in this process is apparent, particularly facilitating and leading the process of co-design and community engagement. We hope that the quality of outcomes can continue to improve to match the ambition of these community driven projects. We saw a greater proportion of small projects this year, from public realm improvements to courtyards, kitchen gardens, orchards and private gardens. The attention to detail and thoughtful responses demonstrated that these small interventions, often with matching small budgets, can have a significant impact on people’s lives. Finally, we applaud those Landscape Architects and practises who contributed to the community through providing their time and energy, guiding processes and enabling creative endeavours beyond the profession.

CIVIC LANDSCAPE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE B O W D E N M A I N PA R K ASPECT Studios Renewal SA The keenly anticipated Bowden Main Park realises an exemplary public place for inner city living. The open space model for Bowden’s urban renewal is led by a design ethos combining contemporary innovation and heritage. The Park plays upon the site’s rich culture and built form, responding to the residential street context and domestic architecture, revealing red recycled bricks. The angular crisscrossing of materials layers the ground plane beneath Plant 4’s iconic sawtooth roof. The experience of playful delight in the context of the town square expands the market to a place of social cohesion and creative exchange. The vibrancy and intensity of the Park’s use demonstrate the essential consideration of amenity for the prosperity of place, a task that Aspect Studios have superbly demonstrated in the delivery of an engaging, cohesive and integrated civic space. CIVIC LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AWARD COLONEL LIGHT CENTRE FORECOURT G R E E N WA L L City of Adelaide - Design & Strategy City of Adelaide A dynamic green flourish upon a tired façade announces the arrival to the city’s municipal centre. The drapery of a living green wall heralds this important node along the busy city transect, demonstrating the City’s commitment to sustainable initiatives aimed at the target of increasing green space. The reinvigoration of the space creates an open and sheltering aspect within a harsh urban city environment. Celebrating Adelaide’s 175 year history of local government, a playful ‘green’ motif extends across the ground plane with a delightfully retro terrazzo tree emblazoned across the forecourt. The planted wall showcases the innovative application of green walls to existing buildings and urges other stakeholders to adopt green infrastructure for a resilient city. Equally innovative, the delivery method challenges asset renewal methodology with a proactive design led approach. The Design and Strategy team is to be congratulated on this important achievement of civic leadership in the advancement of a more liveable city. PHOTOGRAPHER Daryl Tian

CIVIC LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AWARD HOLLAND STREET UPGRADE JPE Design Studio City of West Torrens The transformative upgrade of this civic space injects colour and energy into what was a typically unremarkable street. The intervention is bold yet understated in retaining an open flexibility, respectful of the site context. Reflecting West Torrens industrial past and the history of the tram bridge, the streetscape is functional and adaptable. The urban space now provides a meeting place, a cycle way and incorporates natural systems with sustainable water reuse for irrigation. This public investment is testament to the precinct’s revitalisation with emergent new technologies and West Torrens strategic vision ably realised in JPE’s collaborative design skills which have deftly delivered a vibrant precinct to revitalise the local community.

Initially proposed as a facility upgrade, the design team, together with the community, have delivered a much greater project with significant impact. The park caters for a diverse community and is a significant investment in active recreation, play and passive spaces that have been stitched together seamlessly. Tidlangga has looked beyond typical elements and reimagined what play and nature could mean. The recreation elements allow for sensory, active, cognitive and passive play, fostering exploration and interaction. The existing recreation facilities have been complimented with a community instigated pocket orchard, an exploratory path through the existing native vegetation, nature play features, lawn, picnic shelters and two play equipment areas. Department of Environment, Water & Natural Resources Retaining the largest remnant of Mallee Box grassy woodland on the Adelaide Plains, the Cobbler Creek Recreation Park is highly valued for biodiversity conservation and was a driver for thoughtful strategic approach to the parks redevelopment. Previously underutilised, the project has successfully introduced a new vision for visitor use, enjoyment, understanding and awareness of the park. The walking trails, extensive playspace, BMX and mountain bike facilities sit comfortably adjacent the rehabilitated creekline and conservation areas. The extensive engagement of young people and the local community in the design process is evident and has driven broader and more diverse park use. URBAN DESIGN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AWARD

VICTOR HARBOR MAINSTREET PRECINCT PROJECT WAX Design

City of Victor Harbor This project is the outcome of four years of considered thinking, planning, consultation and design. It has transformed the heart of Victor Harbor into a bold, pedestrian oriented place that skilfully resolves issues identified through careful research and community engagement. The design has encouraged people to return to the town centre and the social and economic benefits are clearly evident. The suite of urban elements used, in particular, the engineering and soft landscape detailing is of an exemplary standard. The reference to whales in the forms and patterns visible in the space creates a memorable aesthetic but does not ‘compete’ with the adjoining heritage buildings. The role of the landscape architects in guiding the place making solution adopted is an outstanding feature of this project. This was more than just a physical outcome but also recognized the need for locals to reconnect socially and emotionally with their centre by establishing a more equitable balance in how they could use and experience the space. The Rural City of Murray Bridge The Sixth Street Revitalisation Project is a contemporary and well executed model of streetscape improvement which highlights the importance of public space and a welcoming pedestrian-oriented environment to the social, environmental and economic vitality of regional towns. The local government client and Murray Bridge community have enthusiastically supported the project, recognizing the benefits its implementation has already realized. A clear aim was to strengthen the community fabric of the region. This strategic public realm investment has contributed to a renewed sense of local identity and optimism and has given residents, users and business owners’ confidence in their township’s future which is already being reflected in improved local trade and cultural offerings. The integrated, functional and well-resolved design demonstrates a high level of technical and aesthetic skill in a solution appropriate to its context and in its use of a tight budget. The urban detailing is well controlled and eschews the ‘featurism’ often seen in similar projects PHOTOGRAPHER Intermethod

City of Adelaide Design & Strategy and JPE Design Studio City of Adelaide The strategy responds to the pressure facing the Park Lands due to the population growth of the city and inner suburbs, as well as recognising the contribution the Park Lands makes to the social life of the city. The Adelaide Park Lands Strategy has a new vision, fresh objectives, outcomes and strategies which reflect a diverse range of views and ideas that emerged during the course of the comprehensive and multi-faceted engagement with key stakeholders and the South Australian community. The strategy carefully manages the function of the Park Lands as a state asset. The project team has created a pivotal and innovative planning strategy that defines the future management of the Park Lands in a contemporary, aspirational, vibrant, and engaging way. The Jury were particularly impressed with the spatial planning approach which has resulted in the transformation from a text-heavy, policy-laden document to a userfriendly, design-led strategy which boldly illustrates and facilitates future community use of the Adelaide Park Lands. The result is a wonderful, open, crafted space that is exuberant in sharing a love for design, functionality, materiality, craftsmanship and art. Then jury were particularly impressed with the private investment into the public realm. The total site design arranges spaces to connect with the street (shop front) sharing the busy-ness of the public realm with the chaos of a small bar and cafĂŠ. The art of design and the process of design and creativity is overtly celebrated, not hidden. This is a wonderful space to celebrate and be proud of. GARDENS

GARDENS AWARD OF EXCELLENCE QUANDONG GARDEN Oxigen Penelope Hayter This joyful and engaging native garden located in the Adelaide foothills has transformed a previous formal lawn and garden into a compelling example of Australian garden design – one that celebrates the art of gardening and which has at its core a deep appreciation of space, the considered use of native plants, local materials and food production. This is a people’s garden enjoyed by children and grandparents. Organised around terraces, the garden makes full creative use of the slope. Transitions are seamlessly achieved via corten steel steps that lead and direct. Level spaces are made usable with stone setts, timber boardwalks and decks. These spaces are extracted from planted beds which, in turn, enclose and define. The retention of mature grey box trees creates structure and gravitas while the thoughtful use of a diverse palette of plants is clear evidence of an expert eye and hand. This garden is an outstanding example of a landscape to be enjoyed over time - more botanic garden than private garden. The skill of the landscape architect in imagining how it will evolve and continue to nurture its inhabitants and visitors is clearly evident. PHOTOGRAPHER Oxigen / Dan Schultz

‘‘THIS GARDEN IS AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF A LANDSCAPE TO BE ENJOYED OVER TIME.”

GARDENS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AWARD ABG KITCHEN GARDEN Oxigen Botanic Gardens of South Australia Sited in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden is an outdoor classroom, developed to inspire a sense of wonder in children about where their food comes from. Conceived as the winning entry in a limited competition in 2014, the garden includes beds abundant with fruit, trees, vegetables, herbs and learning spaces. Plots have been designed as divided, irregular beds with paths flowing through them, creating a sense of adventure. The garden enables children to learn about the different aspects of kitchen gardening such as the life-cycle of plants, recycling and sustainability, diversity of food, seasonality and the role of insects and other animals in the environment. With more than 5000 children and accompanying teachers and parents, visiting the garden every year it’s engaging, whimsical spaces provide an opportunity for its visitors to experience hands-on gardening and learn about healthy food. It provides an important educational experience and is a fun place to be in. This inspired project proves again the value good design achieves and the contribution landscape architects can make to education and the core principles of community, health and lifestyle that underpin the profession.
