Across our communications, we refer to the Canadian Press (CP) Stylebook for guidance on capitalization, spelling and grammar.

There are also some sensitivities to keep in mind with regards to our word choices and the preferred spelling of specific terms:

Accident:

We avoid this word at Suncor, using incident instead.

Fort McKay:

Use this spelling when referring to the town. Although several provincial maps spell this as MacKay, First Nations Peoples prefer McKay and we respect that.

Indian:

This term may be objectionable and is now replaced with First Nations. However, status Indians prefer to use it. Note that it is acceptable when referring to an organization like the Indian Resource Council, or legislation like The Indian Act. For the glossary of Indigenous terms, see page 12.

Mineable:

Not minable. This spelling is industry convention and contrary to CP Style.

North America Onshore:

Not North American Onshore.
