PREFACE It is with great pleasure that I herewith introduce myself and motivate my below abridged portfolio. My career objectives are to develop, sustain, and contribute to the field of Architecture and design. To put my acquired skills into practice, to help improve our environment and make a contribution to the bigger picture, one building at a time. To learn and grow in the field and as an aspiring designer. I completed my bachelor of architectural technology at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in 2013. Through which I have developed an interest in sensitive and sustainable design approaches to architecture, and have explored this in my years of undergrad studies, illustrated in my abridged portfolio. I have two year’s work experience at dhk architects, in my time at dhk I have further developed my interest, research and knowledge of sensitive and sustainable design, through working, together with the dhk team, on various green rated buildings. In my first year at dhk I attended the Green Building Council of South Africa course, for new buildings and have been accredited as a Green Building Council accredited professional. The experience and knowledge I have gained over these couple of years, has strengthened and reinforced my ideals towards sensitive sustainable design, and its crucial relevance to our time. Your architectural department has an excellent reputation for research and design expertise. Together with my technical undergrad background, I believe this combination to be vital in the makings of a well-rounded architect, to be at the forefront of this vastly expanding and demanding field. Thus, I wish to be awarded with the opportunity to study and interact with your great institution. This exposure will, certainly, offer me the opportunity to broaden my future endeavours. I am confident, that in turn, I can make a positive addition and contribution to your faculty, my country and most importantly to society and the public realm.

ENVIRONMENTAL ART CENTER THE EVOLUTIONARY CATALYST B-Tech 2013

Evolutionary Catalyst “Variatios whatever may be its cause, and however it may be limited, is the essential phenomenon of Evolution. Variety in fact, is Evolution”, William Bateson, 1894 (Dupre, B. 2009). The act of being different and making a difference, through the rehabilitation of urban spaces with various

means of environmental art and awareness, will therefore spark the opportunity for change and

evolution.

The architectural intent of the art center is to

initiate the rehabilitation

of urban green

spaces through environmental art

and awareness.

CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS

“As many more individuals of each species are born, than can possibly survive, and as, consequently, there is a frequently recurring struggle for existence, it follows that any being, if it vary however slightly, in any manner profitable to itself, under the complex and sometimes varying conditions of life, will have a better chance of surviving, and thus be naturally selected. From the strong principle of inheritance, any selected variety will tend to propagate its new and modified form”, Charles Darwin, 1859 (Dupre, B. 2009).

SITE The site in Mowbray alongside the

Liesbeek River is a green field site bordering a residential area. The Liesbeek River is an important and

promi-

nent social, cultural and historical

resource to the Mowbray area and surrounds .The East side faces on to the residential area and the West side hits the bank of the river. It is situated on a major

public transport

road, Klipfontien road and is very ac-

cessible and visible from all directions which allows for a statement or landmark structure. Being that the site is in a well-known location, a

sensitive

design solution and an appropriate

sustainable response is needed according to its context and placement, to become a

cornerstone for devel-

opment and a turning point for natu-

ral green field urban sites.

of recreational open spaces, improving sustainable land use and supporting participation in anti- pollution strategies. The building should make a statement an become and environmental

art piece in itself.

ACCOMIDATION REQUIREMENTS:

A space for creativity and collabora-

tion between artists in all fields to mix and

share ideas. The space will be the medium for multidisciplinary and interconnected design.

A stepping stone to future growth while bridging the different design fields. The Environmental Art Centre requires:

• Multifunctional facilities catering for learning and workshops, to teach children and adults about the environment and environmental art. A place for young and old designers to meet, have workshops to create and make there environmental crafts • Research facilities and science laboratories, for training and developmental research in local environmental issues and future possibilities in the built and natural environment.

• Recycling depot for art and recycling awareness; • Recreational spaces for students to use for fundraising events or student performances or community space to use as they need or see fit. • A space to rent for live and work, and start the own business or showcase and display their works in exhibitions and auctions.

LITTLE PRINCESS VLEI GREEN PRIMARY SCHOOL THE GREEN SPINE 3rd year 2012

SITE Princess Vlei is the most natural, ecological, social and most important of the Wetlands that once covered most of the Cape Flats. It is under threat from a City of Cape Town plan to have a shopping centre built on its eastern shore, on the land between Princess Vlei and Prince George Drive. This is the last opportunity for the Cape Town public, and in particular the communities living around the vlei, to rescue this neglected jewel of public open space and to turn it into something of value for these communities.

Critically Endangered vegetation on the site

Wetland conservation Cape Town and South Africa have lost too many wetlands to be able to afford more degradation of these vital

eco-

systems. The Cape Flats was

originally a mosaic of seasonally flooded wetlands of different sizes. Their hydrological and ecological functioning is still poorly understood.

The vegetation on the site was formerly Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, which has disappeared from the Cape Flats. It is the most Critically Endangered vegetation in South Africa. Only very small patches occur elsewhere, and only on particular sandy acid soil. To restore this original vegetation would be of the most significant conservation value.

Green Schools integrates efforts to reduce schools’ ecological footprints, make school

environments healthier, and gets the whole community thinking about solutions to the problems we face. It covers everything from new construction to maintenance, food service to gardens, and office supplies to classroom curricula. The purpose of Green Schools is to honor, support, and recognize the important work that teachers, schools, and districts are doing to advance environmental sustainability; to create healthy and vibrant work and learning communities that enhance academic performance; and to foster intellectual growth, creativity, and innovation through an experiential program where

students learn environmental stewardship and take action to reduce the school’s environmental footprint. There a three primary components: Institutional Commitment, Education through Action, and Facilities/Operations & Maintenance. Following this program and focusing activities and Lessons plans to take action on: • • • • • • •

To summarise, historically this site was

home to Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, now the most Critically Endangered vegetation type in South Africa, urgently requiring restoration. There is a need to establish a botanic garden on the Cape Flats to complement Kirstenbosch. Whether it is a Heritage Memorial park and sunset amphitheatre, hiking trail up to the Tokai Manor House and the Elephant Eye Cave, or landscaping the area, planted

indigenous vegeta-

tion and building pathways, information

area’s with lookout points and other facilities.

It is clear that restoration and improvement of the area is needed and a positive cultural, recreational area and

community icon needs to be introduced of which the whole community can feel connected to, responsible for and gather ownership of for generations to come.

CAPE TOWN WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL PAVILION THE KINETIC WEB B-tech 2013 The Kinetic Web is a mobile pavilion creating a mobility network, linking different people from different areas together, bridging indifference through distance, emphasising inequality by separating and highlighting it, therefore facilitating the spread of equality. It creates a connectivity network, mobilising the people to follow, as it morphs, allowing new social structures, highlighting design as a powerful tool for creating change. Drawing on Cape Town and South Africa’s history of structural inequalities, the differentiation, unbalanced and the unequal, and bridging it, creating personalisation. Emphasising the lack of dialogue between different groups and bridging the difference, plural interactions. Developing positive attitudes towards diversity, past, present and future. A conceptual and tectonic structure, with symbolic structural connections, the structure as a metaphor. The structure in its technicalities becomes the metaphor for the struggle to become socially inclusive. Creating openness and shared social values, new intangible connections.

THE KINETIC WEB

The pressure to rethink dated notions of permanence and timelessness is mounting as users demand more speed, more adaptability and more range of motion. As architect Richard Rogers wrote in 1996′s Projects and Buildings: “inflexible buildings hinder the evolution of society, inhibiting new ideas…. New materials exist that are capable of changing from high insulation to low, from opaque to transparent, that can react organically to the environment, respond to the daily environmental cycle, and transform themselves through the seasons” (Ian S. Lustick 2000).

WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL PAVILION PROPOSAL

Architecture that camouflages, floats, flies, rolls, grows and shrinks, appears and disappears within the city, becoming part of the landscape, the terrain, the network. It is invisible, yet recognisable and identifiable, giving rise to unpredictable and spontaneous processes. It breaks into different levels of reality, searching the city and its present moment, taking it over, invading, re-reading and turning it upside down.

SOCIAL HOUSING MULTI FACETED VILLAGE B-tech 2013 The Multi-faceted Village is a housing scheme based on the dynamics of a village community with its hierarchy in spaces and clusters of community places. It is a network of integrated courtyards spaces grading from the private to public and pedestrian to vehicular, creating a hierarchy of spaces according to the function. Layers are created on the horizontal plane as well as on the vertical plane by a progression of transition spaces and various degrees of enclosure. It is the layering of passive lighting, outdoor spaces, environmental elements and materials that shape and pattern the community activity.

CONCEPTUAL MASSING SITE Rondebosch is one of the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa. It is primarily a residential suburb, with a medium-size shopping area, a small business district as well as the main campus of the University of Cape Town. Geography Rondebosch lies between the slopes of Devil’s Peak in the west and the M5 freeway in the east. The suburb’s western border with the Table Mountain National Park is defined by the M3 freeway. To the north are the suburbs of Rosebank and Mowbray, while to the south are Newlands and Claremont. The eastern border of Rondebosch is the M5 freeway; beyond the freeway are Sybrand Park, Athlone and Rondebosch East. The Southern Line railway divides Rondebosch in two; the only road within Rondebosch that crosses the railway is the Belmont Road bridge. Main Road (the M4) runs northsouth through the area west of the railway, while Campground Road runs in the same direction east of the railway. The area around the intersection of Main Road and Belmont Road is Rondebosch’s main commercial area, with several small shopping malls and two supermarkets. Also located in this area is Rondebosch railway station, which is the main public transport facility in the suburb. The rest of the suburb is used for educational and residential purposes, with the residential areas being generally denser further to the west where the influence of the University of Cape Town is felt. Two canalised streams run from the slopes of Table Mountain through Rondebosch; the Liesbeeck River runs northwards between Main Road and the railway, while the Black River runs in a northeasterly direction through the eastern part of the suburb. The terrain is generally flat east of the railway line, while to the west it slopes upwards towards Devil’s Peak.

MULTI-FACETED

Multi–Faceted Village is based on diverse

individuals

with their own

identity, within

a framework, creating a whole. To create housing based on the dynamics of a village community with its hierarchy in spaces and clusters of community spaces. It is a network of

integrated clustered

courtyards spaces grading the segments and levels of functions and community spaces. The framework forms the basis for the user to grow within and around and allows for change and diversity. The Structure is modular, standard sizes and sustainable, in being completely demountable leaving only the foundation footings behind.

With Le Corbusier’s developed principles of rational housing we can see that when these composite principles are applied to housing design and production, they create both spatial variety and unity.

Instinct – Invigorate, Revitalise, Energise. This brief is based on the dynamic relationship between the inside and the outside of the structure. The client requested a private getaway retreat in a vast remote location of your choice. The space should be concious of the environment it excists in, and must embrace guests from the moment they arrive. It should be positioned to view the horizon as far as the eye can see.

SITE: HIGHVELD Climate. Warm, rainy summers and cool, dry winters. Abundant sunshine, great diurnal changes of temperature and frequent winter frosts. Vegetation. The climatic conditions of marked drought, severe night frosts and considerable diurnal variations of temperature in winter are inimical to tree growth. Thus the natural climax vegetation can be described as true grassland. Two main types are recognized: the short grassveld or sweetveld in the east and the mixed grassveld towards the drier west. Major grass types include redgrass (Themeda Triandra) and Cymbopogon Plurinodis, predominant in country between 1.5m and 1.8m in height, and species of Eragrostis and Setaria. The natural vegetation of the region has been upset and largely supplanted by urbanization to the north and large scale farming to the south.

Technology. With the exception of the Lesotho lowlands and the Thaba ‘Nchu enclave, few if any traditional building skills are still practised in this region today. Historically this area has always been poor of timbers suitable for building. Therefore the presence to the north of an urban industrialized economy, together with its technology and availability of commercial materials, has exerted a strong influence upon the aesthetics of the local indigenous architecture. The nature of the “found” material has also had to undergo a process of redefinition (Frescura, 1982) that, in its turn, has forced the local builder to make allowances in order to accommodate modern industrial materials within the framework of traditional construction. The dwellings built by farm workers generally reflect the insecurity of their land and job tenure and usually follow the “highveld house” pattern, involving the use of sun-dried clay or turf blocks, set with clay mortar into monolithic load-bearing walls, usually roofed over with corrugated iron sheeting.

Bridge Park is located directly opposite the central public square and along the attractive canal that will run through the precinct. Given the proximity along the proposed pedestrian movement network, Bridge Park tenants can easily access and benefit not only from the amenities within the Bridgeways Precinct, but also from the shops, bars, restaurants and hotels located across Century Boulevard.

BRIDGE PARK OFFICES 

Bridge Park East and West are designed to provide a comfortable, healthy and productive working environment for occupants, with an overall environmental strategy which encompasses transport, health, energy, water, and waste.

This is largely due to the fact that Bridge Way, running in front of the buildings, has been designed to align directly with a view of Devil’s Peak.

Transport is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the world. In order to address this, the buildings aim to increase the use of alternatives to single user car travel. By encouraging staff to use alternative forms of transport, we will be improving access to the site and reducing the negative impact on the environment.

The comprehensive green initiatives will provide a future proofed home for your organisation. BRIDGE PARK OFFICES

spectacular views of the city

bowl, Table Mountain, and Lion’s Head. The Building ties strongly into the main pedetrian route which runs along Dock Road and connects the city center to the V&A. With its location

on the main arterial route that connects the city center and V&A, the building also ties closely into the ma-

jor transportation network and has a proposed BRT station directly in front of one of the building entrances.
