Teachers in demand

Indonesian translations of some of the trickier words in this first issue of Aiming Higher:

TWO STATISTICS SAY it all. There are more people around the world learning English as a foreign tongue than there are native speakers of English. And only a very few native speakers are trained to teach English, can do it well, and are prepared to live and work outside their home country. Even fewer non-native speakers speak good enough English to teach it to others. Which is why it is so difficult it to find good teachers in Jakarta. Where there’s a shortage the price goes up. But not just a price in terms of salary. The best teachers search out the schools where they can really enjoy their work, where they have the best-motivated students, and where they don’t have to work to a formula, but can be creative in how they teach. Now for the second statistic. Aim for English is the fastest growing English school in Jakarta. Interesting, isn’t it?

1. Grateful (adj) – Berterima kasih 2. Eager (adj) – Berhasrat 4. Amuse (v) – Menarik perhatian 5. Foreign tongue (n) – Bahasa asing 6. Shortage (n) – Kekurangan 7. Multi-national (adj) – Berbagai bangsa 8. Side-benefit (n) – Keuntungan sampingan 9. Hand-picked – Memilih sendiri 10. Fulfilling (adj) – Melaksanakan

  Aim for Holland? IT'S A LITTLE KNOWN fact that more than 1400 graduate and post-graduate courses in the Netherlands are now taught in English. Dutch universities are among the best in the world, and there are currently thousands of Indonesians enjoying the rich cultural experience and top-quality education the Netherlands has to offer. In 2009 Aim was very proud to be chosen as the pre-departure English language preparation provider for the majority of this year's StuNed scholarship recipients. These lucky postgraduate students, hand-picked by The Netherlands Education Support Office (NESO) spent four months at Aim earlier in the year, both studying academic English and also preparing for the IELTS test. The programme was a great success, with the vast majority of our students now already studying in the Netherlands. The students all came from outside Java, and many were first-time visitors to Jakarta, so ensuring that they had a fulfilling, exciting, rewarding time in their nation's capital was also central to the success of the programme. It helped that they were all lovely people! We wish ‘Aim’s StuNeders’ the best of luck for the future. Enjoy your time in The Netherlands, and stay in touch!

1. Make lists! Write down the things you need to do today, this week, this year. 2. Prioritise. If you are managing your working time, discuss your priorities with your boss, and with anyone depending on your output. 3. When you finish a task on your list, cross it out! Use coloured ink or a highlighter. Looking at a list with lots of coloured crossings-out will make you feel better. 4. If you are faced with lots of things you need to do today, your first task should be the one you least want to do. Maybe it’s the most tedious, or the least enjoyable. When it’s done, the rest of the day will be much easier. 5. Try and find a way of avoiding interruptions, even if for only a short part of the day. You’ll be amazed at how much you can do when you don’t have to keep breaking off. 6. Keep a daily diary. If you attend a meeting, make a note of any actions you agree to take on. Or if you have a phone conversation, make a note of anything you agree to do. Put these actions into your list of tasks. That way you won’t forget them!
