▲Preface
The old unique buildings in Shanghai are dilapidated, beautiful and scarce, with the exception of only a small number being under government-protected repairs, most of that are in poor conditions. As for residents, their living environment is extremely poor; for the building itself, it is recklessly destroyed and wasted; for the community, it loses its commercial value for unreasonable development of the prime area in Shanghai; for the culture, the spirit and aesthetics of living in the old houses in Shanghai have been forgotten by the public. I was eager to do something, from an architect’s view to change their lives, inherit the culture of Shanghai in the past and seek new directions and opportunities for the development of this region. In this portfolio, I have selected elaborately six projects of different sizes designed from 2015 to 2019. There was an element that affected my design thinking more or less in each project——light. There are many kinds of light in this world, the morning light, the dawn, the street light. And I think the most important one is the light in our own heart. It represents our yearning for hope, life, purity, beauty and harmony. The cover of the portfolio can be understood as a roof with skylight or a room with light shining from the door. And how should the light in people's heart be portrayed? I will continue looking for the answer in the design.

Project brief:
Willow garden is a secluded community hidden in the Jing'an district in Shanghai. There are nine identical old houses in the community. Their former owners are the first generation of bankers in Shanghai. As time went by, most of the houses were slowly occupied by ordinary people, and the largest one lived in 30 households. Fortunately, one of them has been passed down from generation to generation by the president of Citibank. Now, the landlord living on the second floor is preparing to transform the three-story attic space into an airbnb, making it a home suitable for the lives and ideas of modern people. When the 90-year-old landlord opened the loft door where no one lived for a year, presented in front of me is a warehouse space that is in disrepair. On the way to the terrace, I felt like the attic was covered with sunlight. The landlord gave the key to my hand and said to me: "Her future will be handed over to you."
Problems to be solved:
The roof structure has been unreasonable in the renovation of the past years, and it has been leaking all the year round and cannot be cured. The lighting of loft is very poor, with only four tiger windows and terrace windows and doors, the interior is very dark. What style should be chosen to make this old building embrace its past and adapt to the future, giving it a sense of belonging that people especially cherish in this busy age?

Yuyuan Road brings together many famous old houses in the Shanghai British Concession area, and there are many celebrities' former residences. Walking into every small alley, you can see the unique old houses in Shanghai, which are the history and symbol of Shanghai that is different from other cities. There are 9 almost identical old houses in Willow Garden, and this case is located in one of them. There is a spacious private garden in front of the house, which is elegant and secluded with green trees. The landlord lives on the first and second floor, and the third floor is the area for the renovation.

Serious shortage of lighting is another big problem.

The sticker saturation that can be bought on the market is relatively high.So I want to use different colors on both sides to reduce the saturation and form a new color.

Luxury is not a pile of valuable materials, but something that can evoke people's emotions. In this house, there are materials full of temperatures. Pine, linen, hemp rope, pottery, roots, handles made of cowhide, old suitcases, dead tree bonsai, original old fireplace. They contain the past years, carry the memories of the past, silently exchange information from different ages. In this way, I leave the space blank and hope that the texture of these old objects will infect the people who live here.
▲What is luxury?
▲Postscript
Willow Villa is the first project I moved from architectural design to people's daily lives. He is full of my thoughts on the past, present and future of the old houses in Shanghai. On the terrace with birds and flowers, I feel the good life of people who have lived here seems to be in front of me. I realized the scene that she is full of sunshine when I first entered the room. Once, the home was a family's memory field, a wooden table, a wooden bench; the home is a museum of a person, a bookshelf full of collections shows the owner's beliefs; the home is people's spiritual refuge, we can get away from the troubles of the city and choose the warmest and safest life. The home is a place where we can get along with the world easily. "Embracing legacies creating homes" I don't know how prosperous the house was in the past, but through the fragmented scene behind this multicolored glass, I can see that she is not only a building but a home in our hearts. What I have learned is not only the space of the old house, the details of the old objects, the living conditions of the old times, but also the pursuit and yearning for the people of the Golden Age. This is what we lack in our time.

Project brief:
This is a garden house located at the intersection of North Shaanxi Road and Xinzha Road, built in 1924. It was originally a private residence and used as an American aviation guest house during the War of Resistance and Liberation Wars. After the vicissitudes of life, its tenant changed a few waves and is idle now. SHEHOUSE has become the designer of the entire building through bidding, including Repair Design and Concept Plan Design and operation of some of the properties. In this project, I am mainly responsible for leading the team members to survying, research, planning, design and drawing. The project is currently in the early stages of construction drawing design.

North Shaanxi Road - Historical and Cultural Street
The house at No. 549, North Shaanxi Road is neoclassical and Art Deco. The Art Deco style originated in the 1920s and began to flourish in Europe and America in the late 1920s. Shanghai is almost at the same time popular in this architectural style, closely following the world's architectural trends. The front of the building has three floors and the back one has two floors, which was a relatively rare structure at the time. The exterior wall is made of water brush stone, the window is regular, the crotch is slightly thick, the door and window openings are geometrically decorated, and the hexagonal room on the south side increases indoor lighting. The building is symmetrically distributed, and it is well-balanced and dignified. From the intersection of Xinzha Road and North Shaanxi Road, you can see the hexagonal tower on the east side of the auxiliary building. The shape is beautiful and the facade decoration is well preserved. North

â–˛Architectural style and characteristics
North Shaanxi Road was formerly known as Seymour Road and was completed in 1914. Located in the modern Shanghai public concession area, it is a high-end residential area where Chinese and foreigners live together, and an important gathering area of Shanghai culture. In modern history, the Song family, the Rong family, and other officials, wealthy people, celebrities, scholars, and patriotic understandings live here, leaving a rich historical memory and witnessing the modern history of China. It is now one of the top ten historical and cultural streets in China. Within a distance of nearly one kilometer from the northwestern Shaanxi Road, there are more than 20 historical and cultural landscapes such as famous celebrities, typical style buildings and revolutionary relics. It is a representative section of multicultural integration between China and the West after the opening of Shanghai.

▲Situation Analysis 1.Facade The facade is relatively complete, but as time goes by, people who move into this space at various time periods carry out various transformations here. The facade of the building is equipped with various brackets, air conditioners, monitoring, rainwater pipes and wires, which destroyed the integrity of the facade of the building. The facade walls and railings were covered with vines, and the wooden doors and windows were seriously aged.
4. Wall skirt The wall skirt is relatively well preserved and has a relatively complete carved decoration. Partially due to the equipment, there are puncture damage and traces of late repair.

5. Doors and windows The doors and windows of the whole building are relatively well preserved, mainly divided into wooden doors and windows and iron windows. The second floor of 2# has special round window and high window. The third floor of 1# still retains the original curtain rods. Except for some of the glass and hardware, the basics are kept intact, but the outer window is partially peeled off due to prolonged wind and sun exposure, and the steel window has slight deformation and rust.

▲Internal style and characteristics
The lobby and the east and west rooms of the 1# building are decorated with "arrow and egg" style wooden wall skirts. The hall has a complete and beautiful color mosaic. The ground floor of the two rooms has a relatively complete parquet floor, but the insects are serious. The stairwell is made of brown, yellow-green and black terrazzo. The two-story and three-story spaces have been renovated many times, and there is no original decoration except for the windows and the partial ground. 1# and 2# are connected via an outdoor corridor. Most of the space on the first floor of 2# belongs to the retail store and is not part of this project. The stair of 2# is relatively well preserved. A room on the east side of the second floor has the wall skirt as same as the rooms of 1#. The hexagonal room at the end, with very good wainscoting, wooden ceilings and parquet floors are beautiful. Several rooms on the west side of the second floor have no original decoration.
Outdoor corridor 2. Roofing The waterproof layer of the roof does not meet the requirements of waterproofing and heat preservation, and is partially damaged. The roof has a light steel keel that violates the rules.
Round window
The handle of entrance door Roof of 1# 3. Ground The ground materials mainly include terrazzo, parquet floor and mosaic. The floor materials in the public walkway area are mainly terrazzo and need to be cleaned. The original parquet floor is preserved in the southwest and southeast of the main building. The hall floor is the only place with beautiful mosaics.

According to the survey, the 1#2# building of No. 549, North Shaanxi Road was built around 1924. The owner of the house is Shen Yanling, a large real estate developer in Shanghai. According to the description of the newspaper, it can be seen that after the completion of the building, the livingroom, dining room, bedroom, maid's room, kitchen, drying table, bathroom, storage room, car room and large garden are all available. The specific figures for each room may change over time and may need to be judged in conjunction with the situation on the spot.

▲Design Principles 1. The principle of integrity In this repair and protection project, it is important to repair the key protection parts of the facade and the interior, maintain the original space pattern, and carefully repair the characteristic decoration of the indoor room. In addition to the protection of the building itself, it should also include protection of the courtyard, vegetation, historical structures and the environment. 2. The principle of authenticity Through a comprehensive investigation, the key protection sites are determined, and it is necessary to enter the site multiple times, compare and judge with historical data, and grasp the authenticity of the building. Retain the original construction and materials as much as possible and restore the original appearance of the building. 3. The principle of confidentiality and concealment Set up advanced equipment to improve the modernization of the building and improve the comfort of the building. It is necessary to make the design with the least impact under the premise of protecting the key parts. 4. The principle of recognizability It is necessary to fully respect history and treat the current state of architecture with care. The new decorations and content in this project need to be considered for recognizability.

After I fixed dozens of old houses in Shanghai, this was my first project to cooperate with large state-owned funders, and the energy was far more than the average private commissioned project. In this project, I have been learning and exploring, not only the knowledge that the project itself needs, but also the way to communicate with various people. Thanks to the efforts of my team members, thank the owners and the construction drawing unit for their cooperation. As time progresses, I will witness the moment when this old house is revived and continue to work hard.

Project area: 96㎡

Project brief:
Wuyuan Road is a small road full of old houses in Shanghai. Although the road is very narrow, there are many small shops on both sides of the road, and the popularity is very strong. This house is on the easternmost side of Wuyuan Road, close to Changshu Road, and the location is very good. The seven three-story houses in the community have a long history, but the situation is not very good. The wooden beams used on the roof are very thin and partially leaking. The landlord integrated the two houses into a complete set, most of the walls can be removed, and the entire space is transparent. The top of the gable on the east side holds a part of the former fireplace. There are particularly open windows in the southeast corner. There is no good support under the triangular structure of the roof structure. The stairs to the home are very narrow and steep. I hope that I can preserve the current transparency of the house, embody the high-quality taste with simple colors, and show the indifference, tranquility and calmness of the old house.
Problems to be solved:
How to make rational use of the landscape design plane? How to maximize the advantage of open space? How to deal with narrow stairs? How to create the atmosphere and spirit that I want in this home?

The distance to the south side of the house is very small, only about 6 meters, so the south facing scenery is not particularly good. The southeast corner was originally a balcony. The landlord changed it to an indoor space at a certain time and made a particularly wide corner window. Fortunately, the southeast side of the corner window is covered with dense trees. Standing here, you can enjoy plenty of sunshine and see the red tile roof opposite. There are also some small windows on the east side of the gable. This makes the lighting and scenery in the east room the best. 31

Pick a piece of wood on the side of the stairs to increase the width of the stairs.
There are 2 points to do: 1. Increase the width of the stairs horizontally to make the stairs more open, which is convenient for people to walk and carry goods. 2. Under the guidance of Wabi Sabi, I have another interpretation of my home. Standing on the opposite side of luxury, the intrinsic value of the home is revealed by the incompleteness and simplicity. You can only feel the world if you remain quiet in your heart. I tried to express my cherished unpredictable things in the colors of logs, just like the old fireplace, I hope to keep the history of this old house. I looked out the window, the birds hovering in the air seemed to be looking for a place to stop, and whether we in the dwelling place also needed a quiet corner of the heart...

Project brief:
The owner of the house is a colleague working in the architectural design institute. He is a structural professional and commissioned me to transform the house into a homestay operation. The first time I entered the interior of the house, I thought: Isn't this a box? It is one of the old-fashioned stone-bottom gates built in 1915. Due to historical reasons in China, the entire house of the original family was divided into many households. This is located on the southernmost side, with two windows facing south and east, with a height of 3.3m. There is a small yard on the west side of the house. Because the owner is a structural professional, I hope that the final result will have a rich structural aesthetic.
Problems to be solved:
How to make people live in such a small space? How should people living in it feel? How to achieve the structural beauty that the owner wants?

The windows on the south and east sides provide plenty of sunlight, and the west side is the corridor of the original house. It is now sealed by the landlord and it can be a bathroom. Skylight can be introduced with a glass roof. 43
In a small world of my own, I hope that its function does not need to be particularly complicated, to meet the basic needs of two people or even one person. Its location is very good, next to the famous attractions. But leaving the lively place, I hope it will make people feel less anxious and can slow down in this fast-moving steel city.

If there no place to put study, Why not let it be everywhere?
If it can make people feel quiet, then it will be a spiritual space. I hope that people who come to Shanghai can feel the oriental culture at the same time.

Which four functions are used to fill these four boxes?
The study culture is also highly valued by chinese people. The study is the spiritual home of scholars, enshrining their ideals and ethics. People stepped into the study and they feel quiet. At this moment, it seems to have left a world of troubled things, and has moved to the world of his own heart. Scholars generally have study rooms. Scholars love books, respect books, read books, and collect books. The study room has naturally become a small free world in the hearts of scholars. Walk through the study, travel in the text, and enjoy the happiness of books. During the day, outside the house, I was sitting alone in the corner of the study room, drinking tea and reading, not going against time. With the sudden inspiration, I wrote on my mind what I thought. In the study, I guard this short silence, don't have to face other people, and talk to myself quietly. Only at this moment, I am myself.

Tea is a special kind of drink that has been passed down in China for thousands of years and is enduring. It has also had a profound impact on the countries of the East. The source of WABISABI of Japan's Tea Saint, Sen no Rikyu, is the tea ceremony. The tea ceremony culture was introduced to Japan during the Tang Dynasty. It is a symbol of the splendid luxury of the Tang Dynasty. The Japanese think it is hedonistic, and the nobility competes to imitate. However, in the Warring States Period, the people tasted the hardships of life. The tea ceremony of Sen no Rikyu catered to the great era, and the imported goods from the Tang Dynasty became the authentic Japanese cultural spirit. It is not only a reflection of leisure and interest, but also a way for the human body in the world to have a hard life. It embodies the beautiful ideal of the hidden person pursuing a simple and quiet life. Sen no Rikyu combines the tea ceremony with WABISABI, pursuing the unity of knowing and doing, the simplicity of nature, the beauty of the crippling and perishing, and reversing the extravagant atmosphere of gold. This move has a profound impact on Japanese culture. He also reduced the space in the tea room and lowered the entrance so that anyone with any identity must bow. It means that everyone who enters the tea room needs to meet on an equal footing. I think it is the greatest spiritual abundance to put a tea room in this little space. When people walk up the interlayer along the stairs through a space that is not spacious, then sit down to make a cup of tea and read a book, which is really a luxury in this flashy city.

Since the house was launched on airbnb, it has really become a city's study. Countless people have enjoyed this mysterious and quiet cabin through their mobile app. I also went to live for one day. From the morning light to the dawn and then to the street light, they are all housed in the house. Here is a light box. And my favorite time of the day is no more than afternoon. I took out a book and sat down at the place below the stairs, watching the sun shine from the window through the grille, and then split it into a bundle of light on my face, filled with peace and stability.

Every gap in the room has a different view waiting to be discovered. In this room, people feel peace of mind and never think of going to the distance. I hope that people can leave a book every time they leave, and another person will pick up the book. In this way, people share this spiritual space with countless people at different points in time, and people communicate with each other. The shimmer from the small study window can make us feel warmer.

▲Pay tribute to Carlo Scarpa Project name: Brass & Glass
Project fund: €2,600
Project period: 2018.6-2018.9
Project brief:
Just one year after completing Willow Villa, the old landlord rented the first floor and the second floor to SHEHOUSE as office. I was responsible for making the whole renovation. I have retained and repaired most of the structures and restored the look of the entire building. However, one of the old walls is an exception. After the unloaded outer members were removed, eight wooden pillars were introduced as their load-bearing systems. I hope that under the premise of the overall steadiness, restraint, advanced, sophisticated, low-key, exquisite and other temperament of the old house, the eight wooden pillars will be transformed into a transparent, exquisite, light bookshelf with a certain privacy. The overall thickness of the bookshelf is below 450. I chose glass and brass as the material, and the brass will change color over time. I borrowed the design idea of architect Carlo Scarpa and hoped to learn more about his design philosophy through the detailed design of the bookshelf.
Problems to be solved:
How to distribute the thickness of 450mm? How to solve the problem of handing over wood and brass? How to do it without exposing any screws? How to increase the load limit of the bookshelf without damaging the floor?

▲Disappeared screws
Beam
The sides of the eight wooden columns are not flat and the insects are particularly strong. After processing the insects and decaying wood, I added a layer of 30mm thick solid wood on both sides. Before screwing, I pre-opened a 15mm wide slot on the wood. The screw is installed in the center of the slot. After the installation, insert the brass piece into the wood so that the end of the screw can be covered. People will not see the screw.

▲Fixed method of brass brass strip
Within the budget, the purchased brass strips are square or round in cross section. The construction personnel have no ability to weld brass strips and can only cut. How to pull the wood is a problem. I cut a square groove on two pieces of wood, clamped the brass strip from both sides, screwed it, and used pressure to create friction between the brass strip and the wood to pull the bookcase. After the vertical brass strips are fixed to each shelf, they need to be fixed on the top wooden beams. The manufacturer helped me with the edge of the brass strip so that it could be screwed. So I put the brass strip into the wood A, screwed it on both ends, and fixed the wood A on both sides of the beam with the wood B.

▲Thickness distribution
After finishing the repair and thickening of the eight pillars, I divided the bookshelf into two parts, north and south. If the two sides are equally divided, there is only 225mm space on each side to place books or utensils. So it is better to focus on one side. Therefore, I set the width of the south side to 150mm and the width of the north side to 300mm.
▲Structural system
The main supporting member is a T-shaped member made of wood, which is fixed to the two sides of the wooden column by three screws in the same concealed manner. The cantilever on the south side is shorter, and the T-shaped member can guarantee its load-bearing. The cantilever on the north side is longer, and the force of the cantilevered component is not enough to withstand the load used in the future, and additional support is needed. There are two ways to do this: find a support point on the floor below or find a tie point on the beam above. Since the floor is unbreakable and I want to create a flying and light feel, consider lifting a slender brass strip from the beam of the roof to hold the cantilevered end. 52
53
Glass
N
▲Edge method of north side glass
After I placed the predetermined tempered glass on the T-shaped member, I can see the cross-section of the glass, which is not very delicate. Therefore, I cut a square groove of the same thickness as the tempered glass on the wood, and purchased a square brass strip of the same thickness as the glass to be embedded in the groove, thereby trimming the glass. N
▲Postscript
Maybe every designer wants to be a craftsman, but it is not necessary to follow the rules. I should form a mutual guiding relationship with the old house. Every detail comes not only from the brain, but also from many manual labor through countless experimental simulations.
▲Edge method of south side glass
Because the books on the south side of the bookshelf need to be placed, it is necessary to design railings at the ends, which can be designed together with the edges of the glass. I ordered a brass strip that was twice as thick as the glass(10X10)to seal the end of each shelf, and the raised portion prevented the book from slipping. But if the exhibit is a relatively large book, I need to consider a higher plug. I added a thinner brass strip (5X5)that runs through the bookshelf, which makes the bookshelf lighter.
Water ripple glass
▲Edge method of Vertical glass
I used glass to separate 2 rooms, but how do I hide the silica gel on both sides of the fixed glass? I used two wooden strips to clamp the edges of the glass and hid the silica gel in the wooden strip. Finally, according to the feeling of the scene, I changed the transparent glass into a water ripple glass to increase the privacy of the room. 54

Does anyone fall in love with a house because of a yard? My friend bought this small house because of this mossy yard. In Shanghai, he can buy a threebedroom house near the Central Ring Road at the same price. He told me about his dream of life. He hopes to create a small world that can communicate with the outside world and feel the nature. Under the premise of satisfying their family of three, it is better to let parents come to live occasionally.
Problems to be solved:
How to solve basic living needs such as sleeping problems for five people? How to add various functions? How to make the lighting in the main room better? How to make people feel the nature?

I planted the plants outside, and the translucent glass made the sun more transparent. 59

In a late autumn in Shanghai, my friend invited me to the new home he had just moved. At this moment, the moss in the yard is full of falling leaves, and the sun is warm and beautiful. I took two leaves of palm, put it behind the sofa and said to him, "Now you finally live in nature." The friend replied: "Yes, in fact, the real nature is in my heart. No house has made me feel the true beauty and beauty of life so deeply."

â–˛Epilogue
In Shanghai, the city's history and culture are written in every corner of the streets, the grooves of red bricks, the guardrails of panes, the handrails of stairs, the mosaic tiles, and hidden in people's daily lives as well. At first, I explored the city based on the old buildings to find its hidden charm. i visited the remains of the old building and began to discern the relationship between the culture and the building. I have visited the garden villa, Shikumen district as well as the old flat. From the architectural modeling, flat functional layout, detail aesthetics, I could slowly understand the stories behind every brick, by doing which, architecture is the language for me to understand the city well. I explored every house and renovated it for deeper understanding of the life it used to be and keeping the attractive and charming house alive. From the city exploration to the house construction, and then to the return to the city's renewal, that is how I practice my concept.
