Management & Leadership Strengthening capabilities in public safety organisations

Career-changing leadership development Values, perspective and purpose are essential for good leadership. But for many leaders these attributes are often as elusive as they are important. We provide the space, time and individual guidance to reflect, re-connect and re-orientate. Who we are

Why we do it

The Australian Institute of Police Management is the peak provider of executive learning and development for Australian and New Zealand police and emergency services leaders. It is a collaborative initiative administered by the Australian Federal Police under the direction of a board of control representing all Australian and New Zealand police services.

The increasingly complex world in which public safety organisations operate today requires a collaborative, outwardly focused approach that is very different from the traditional closed model. Their ability to evolve is determined by their leaders’ openness to change and capacity to navigate it.

Our program curriculum is administrated by a board of studies representing: Police jurisdictions, Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency, Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council, Charles Sturt University, University of Tasmania and the Australian Command and Staff College. This multi-agency association emphasises our relevance to all organisations operating in the public safety environment.

What we do We provide exceptional education and professional development. This includes programs leading to formal tertiary qualifications, short courses, seminars with visiting experts, workshops, and personal development initiatives. We also make our campus and facilities available to public sector organisations as a venue for their learning activities and executive meetings.

Our mission is to develop and unite high-performing police and emergency services leaders with great integrity and character so that they can perform at maximum effectiveness in a dynamic multi-agency environment.

Who we work with In 2013 we supported leaders and future leaders from 93 public safety organisations including police, emergency services, defence, intelligence, and public service agencies. We provided professional development opportunities for individuals from the level of emergency services volunteer to Police Deputy Commissioner. The growing number of international participants from the Americas, Europe and Asia reflects global recognition of the quality of our work and the uniqueness of our setting.

Our approach Everything we do stems from a learning philosophy that recognises: • the power of reflection for driving personal growth • the value of sharing tacit knowledge with peers • the reality that most adults are continually learning throughout their careers • the benefit of higher education in developing more capable leaders • the complexities of diversity in building personal resilience and effective decision making

Reflection Our residential programs provide space, quiet, time, light and connection with nature — all conducive to personal reflection, which is a cornerstone of real growth and learning.

Conversation The most important discussions won’t necessarily happen in the classroom. Our programs provide the time for those conversations that matter. Our campus includes built and natural learning spaces which encourage the sharing of ideas and experiences.

“Silence is gold… an amazing journey and a very deep experience.”

Resilience Our location in the middle of a national park brings participants face to face with a resilient natural environment that has developed through flow, not force. The lesson that tough and variable conditions can, with patience and flexibility, produce ingenious, elegant and economical responses is ever present.

Residential matters The residential mode of learning is a defining characteristic of our programs. It’s powerful because placing people in a safe, separate setting frees them to share and receive the tacit information that enables real growth and learning. Every aspect of their stay on campus encourages participants to reflect, recharge and contemplate change.

“I can truly say this has been a life changing experience for me.”

“The course was exceptional and the most intensive program I have undertaken.”

Graduate programs AIPM graduate programs are peak educational experiences for public safety leaders. Their value is borne out by research measuring the impact of participation on leadership behaviour. Translated into a return on investment calculation, the findings demonstrated an immediate organisational return of 164% to employers, which becomes a significant change in organisational capability when extrapolated across the next 13 years of a participant’s career. Our programs recognise the challenges faced by leaders in an increasingly complex environment. They are presented by highly regarded public safety senior executives who draw on their own experiences and insights to provide participants with a highly contemporary understanding of the current and emerging environment.

“There is an unprecedented level of support and professionalism.”

Along with the knowledge and insights they derive from our programs, studying at AIPM is an opportunity for participants to expand their personal networks to include peers in other organisations who face comparable challenges. The qualitative benefits are profound for both individuals and their employers.

Program leaders The AIPM staff, guest speakers and external experts who develop and deliver our programs are experienced practitioners with direct knowledge of the public safety environment as well as being gifted educators and presenters.

Bespoke & collaborative learning opportunities The AIPM works in partnership with organisations to build fully customised programs to meet their specific learning needs. Every program is tailored to optimise learning and maximise the benefits of all aspects of the educational process, from classroom activities to the social and environmental experience. Our bespoke programs can be: • co-branded with your organisation • exclusive to a single corporate entity (non-public) • delivered at our centre or your workplace, domestically and internationally • delivered in languages other than English • presented in a wide range of formats, including one-off workshops and retreats • focused on anything from a single issue to a general area of capacity

Recent clients Organisations we have created bespoke and collaborative programs for include: • Federal Bureau of Investigation – National Executive Institute • Queensland Police Service • Australian Federal Police • Fire & Rescue NSW • Royal Solomon Islands Police Force • Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary • Ministry of Public Security, China • Nossell Institute, Melbourne University

The AIPM is a supplier on the Australian Public Service Commission learning and development panel.

“First-class program facilitated by one of the most insightful leadership practitioners I have been exposed to.”

“The whole experience has been the most amazing thing I have ever done and [I] can’t imagine what direction I would have taken if I didn’t have this chance/journey.”

“One of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Our campus The AIPM is located on North Head, Manly, surrounded by the Sydney Harbour National Park. We are aware of our good fortune to be the custodians of such an exceptional place and are keen to give others the opportunity to experience it. Learning spaces

Knowledge centre

The AIPM has four indoor learning spaces and a selection of meeting rooms, all of which can be configured in various layouts. The Waratah Room has breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour.

Each room has a queen-sized bed, ensuite, desk, computer, television, telephone and WiFi access. Guests also have access to a gym and laundry. “I struggle to find adequate words to express how impressed I am with the total experience. I feel it all has soaked into me ‘like liquid into chalk’. As kooky as it may sound, I am almost experiencing a grieving response having been exposed to so much excellence then having to wrench myself away.”
