Connecting in the new normal Welcome to the 2021 edition of the HVAC&R Search Compendium. This publication comes at a time like no other. After the events of 2020, the way we operate in business has fundamentally changed forever. Organisations have had to recognise this fact and adapt. At AIRAH, we have managed to transition most of our work online during the lockdown‑interrupted year. This process included not only the day-to-day tasks for our staff, but also our offerings to the HVAC&R industry. Our face-to-face training and education offerings were redeveloped to run online. Our events were live‑streamed. We recognised the need to communicate more with our members and partners, during a year when nearly all of us were physically separated. It was a forced revolution. Ideas that had been in development for some time – such as working from home and virtual networking – became a reality almost overnight. Although, at time of writing, Australia has been fortunate enough to avoid the worst impacts of COVID-19, we cannot revert to the way things were. A new age in the way we operate is upon us and is here to stay. Those who are operating in the HVAC&R industry know this only too well. During the course of 2020, we saw companies that adapted quickly to the changed environment gain prominence. Key to their success was their ability to find effective ways to connect with their customers.

That said, we are now spending more time online than ever, and when we need information, we need it now – even if we are away from our desk. The HVAC&R Search website is designed to meet this need, and offers all the functionality you’d expect from a digital directory as well. We are also building traffic to HVAC&R Search through our online network – which grew substantially in 2020. In short, HVAC&R Search offers the best of both worlds, for our new world.

In this new world, HVAC&R Search Compendium and its online version, HVAC&R Search (www.hvacrsearch.com.au), have become more important than ever, both for businesses and the HVAC&R community.

Much remains uncertain in the months and years ahead, but we know that our industry is poised to play a vital role. HVAC&R will help guarantee the community’s health, safety and wellbeing, and the recovery of our economy.

Although it may seem obvious to say, you are holding this Compendium in your hands, quite possibly in your home office. It is a tangible and lasting presence in a world where we are flooded with information, most of it digital and fleeting.

It will be a busy year, and I wish you all the best for it.

Publishing and communications AIRAH's online accredited Professional Certificate in HVAC&R Fundamentals is a fast track to HVAC&R technical knowledge and skills. It can also build on your existing industry experience to provide in‑depth technical insight. AIRAH also runs face-to-face courses around the country. These include ever-popular subjects such as Essential Safety Measures, Smoke Control and Fire Dampers, and Building Ventilation.

The Institute produces publications and communications that champion industry best practice. Technical manuals and publications assist with day‑to‑day tasks in the HVAC&R industry – be it pipe sizing, load estimation, fan selection or water balancing. Popular titles include the recently updated DA19 – HVAC&R Maintenance, the Australian Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning (ARAC) Manuals Volumes 1 and 2, and the AIRAH Member Handbook. AIRAH also publishes two monthly magazines: Ecolibrium and HVAC&R Nation.

All of AIRAH’s training is eligible for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points, tying in with the new Registered Professional Engineer (ARPEng) program.

Aimed at AIRAH members, consulting engineers, contractors, government, architects and industry stakeholders, Ecolibrium boasts a wide array of content presented in an informative and reader-friendly manner. It is sent to AIRAH members and subscribers.

Professional registration

Aimed primarily at those who work on the tools, HVAC&R Nation takes a practical approach, best illustrated by the Skills Workshop section. It is available free copy at wholesalers, TAFEs and distributors nationwide.

Over the past year, governments around the country have begun to implement professional registration schemes for building professionals, including engineers. To become professionally registered, engineers typically need to be accredited through authorised professional body. The AIRAH Registered Professional Engineer (ARPEng) is the professional accreditation for engineers operating in the HVAC&R building services industry and is designed to meet the requirements of the Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) and other state-based schemes as they are released. www.hvacrsearch.com.au
