Helica is a new aviation company where some skilled people have merged to create a remote sensing acquisition firm. It was 2000 when we got all license for aerial work and approval for helicopter modifications in order to install our new ALTM3033 plus a Rollei metric 4k x 4K digit-camera. We have been very successful in the last 2 years and we are going to look at new system for 2 implementing laser data (Hyperspectral). At the moment more than 5000 km have been acquired and delivered thank to the association made with OGS (a Research Government Institute in Italy). We want to be very aggressive and competitive in Europe since we have not to make profits for external aviation firm. Nevertheless, in some projects we leased a fix-wing aircraft since too far away from our hangar. As you know, we fly mainly our own helicopters (two) equipped and dedicated for LiDAR survey.

Precision Terrain Surveys Ltd. designed and constructed their LiDAR 'Airborne Terrain Elevation Mapping Scanner' (ArTEMiS) which operates with an integrated medium format Digital Mapping Camera (DMC). ArTEMiS is operated over the UK, Europe and North Africa onboard PTS Ltd's twin engine survey aircraft. The system nominally collects data on a 1m grid interval over a scan angle of +/- 20deg. However the scan angle is fully adjustable from 0 to an 80deg f.o.v. From a nominal altitude of 800m, the system provides a vertical accuracy of 5 - 20cm (depending on GPS parameters). PTS have developed the full range of post-processing software to ensure accurate data processing and rapid output of quality controlled data. PTS Ltd was founded in 2000 as the airborne division of the NPA Group. NPA, founded in 1972 provides the skilled personnel required to undertake surveys.

Profile:

Terrasolid with its four different packages is the leading software developer for processing airborne scanned laser data. It offers functions to process data from 3D ground scanners, too. TerraScan supports all widely used data formats. All laser points from the ground can be classified by TerraScan and outputted to TerraModeler for terrain modelling. TerraModeler or TerraScan do not limit the number of the points for processing. TerraModeler offers a wide variety of useful features such as edit and display the models, calculate masses and export the models to other software systems. TerraPhoto is developed for processing aerial images and high-resolution, digital frames captured during the scanning mission. The end-product is (true-)orthophoto. For processing TerraPhoto uses classified laser points and the position and orientation parameters of the camera used. Depending on the system configuration and the altitude used even a 2 cm image pixel size on the ground can be reached. TerraMatch is a sophisticated application for correcting airborne laser data by comparing overlapping laser strips with each other.

Over the years they have extended their sensor base and today their sensors are used for a variety of high-precision mapping of terrain surfaces. Based on extensive field work with the system, TopScan has demonstrated that the mean height accuracy of computed terrain heights (spot elevations) consistently runs to 10 - 20 cm. Since introducing the first ALTM system in 1993, TopScan has - at the behest of various customers from such fields as regional surveying, urban surveying, waterway and water traffic management, and coastal protection - surveyed a combined surface area of 100,000 sq. km and processed (and analyzed) the data. To supplement their original ALTM 1020 instrument, TopScan took delivery of an ALTM1225 and an ALTM2050, with integrated digital camera. The UK Environment Agency Technology Group acquired its first ALTM1020 in 1997 and subsequently had it upgraded. In 2001 they purchased a second system, the ALTM2033, and have been using the systems in various platforms both rotary and fixed wing, for applications related to their environmental survey work. In particular they have focused their efforts on coastal surveys, beach mapping and studies related to river flood plains. They are heavily involved in the integration o LiDAR data with other remote sensing instruments including CASI and thermal and digital photography techniques and are presently working on using the combined outputs to map inter-tidal vegetation. They also combine LiDAR data with boat captured swath bathymetry to produce integrated environmental models.

VeriMap Plus has developed an economical, rapid-method of collecting directdigital airborne imagery in conjunction with airborne laser data for Utility, Pipeline, Municipal and Engineering applications. VeriMap originally offered its VeriMap Direct-Digital Camera as an add-on to existing Optech ALTM sensor owners but has since integrated a custom-built IMU Inertial-Navigation system from NavSys, Colorado, a 2500m range Profile LiDAR from Riegl, a Thermal-Infrared Sensor from Mitsubishi and a Kodak RGB-CIR array to their camera suite. The precision collection timing integrated within VeriMap Plus enables the client to drape simultaneous aerial imagery over LiDAR data collected during normal survey operations or DEM obtained by RADAR or other method. The more detailed and precise terrain model of the ground is, enables a higher level of accuracy for the final ortho-imagery products VeriMap offers. The resolution of image data is flexible, with a typical range of 0.10m pixels to 2m pixels. Image data for larger pixel size and mosaics can also collected from higher altitudes designed for the Precision Farming industry that require less detail over large area blocks.
