Have I mentioned the gearbox yet? Ah. Standard high-end G&G Version 2 with 8mm bearings. What sets it apart however is hidden until you apply power and pull the trigger. This thing purrs! Or rather, it doesn’t. Were it not such a no-no, I could sit dry firing this all night, just to listen to it. The noise a gun makes is determined by many factors, and the polymer lower and alloy upper receivers have an effect here I’m sure. But when you pull the trigger, the only sound is that of a gearbox working. It’s clean, direct and business-like. There are no extraneous sounds, no gear whine, motor grind. no suggesting that it could be shimmed a little better, or lubricated a little more appropriately. It is simply put, sex. It is an object lesson on how guns should sound, hopefully the performance in the field will live up to this splendid overture... You’re probably getting the impression that the SCAR has impressed so far - you’d be right. In fairness, the outcome of FN being asked to produce what is to some extent a modular Armalite was always going to end well, even though I suspect they would rather have offered the US SOCOM their FN2000, but the best analogy I can think of is the HK 416. It’s a gun that takes some well established design principles and reapplies them, but for me the SCAR shades the 416 by moving a bit further from the M16 design. It’s more comfortable, more pointable, feels ‘better’ somehow. You will have gathered by this point that the SCAR has managed to win me over despite my initial doubts. Although there are some niggles with what G&G have done (battery!!!!!) this thing just exudes quality and you start to appreciate that price tag a bit more. It is high, certainly for a generation of airsofters raised on ChinaSoft, but it is justifiably high. This is serious quality, and even in these credit-stricken times, you have to pay for that.
