DEAR

Friends

CHAIRMAN’S LETTER

Since the early days of powered flight, courageous Airmen have defined the Air Force mission to Fly, Fight, and Win. Through their courage and sacrifice, they have ensured the unique contributions of Airpower will endure long into the future. And, because of YOUR support, their stories will have a permanent home to inspire future generations. As you’ll recall, the Air Force Museum Foundation gifted $40.8 million to the National Museum of the U.S. Air ForceTM for the design, construction, and outfitting of the new fourth building. On top of that, the Foundation provides an average of almost $250,000 each year to the Museum for ongoing educational activities, volunteer support, special events, special projects, and promotional efforts. So what does that mean? It means enabling over 250,000 educational experiences, mostly for children. It means supporting almost 32,000 guests celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Doolittle Tokyo Raid. It means proper appreciation for almost 600 volunteers. And so much more. 2018 promises to be an exciting year. The opening of the Memphis BelleTM exhibit to the public on May 17 marks exactly 75 years since she made her final bombing run against Nazi Germany. She was the first U.S. Army Air Forces heavy bomber to return to the United States after completing 25 combat missions over Europe during World War II. Add in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of World War I with the World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous September 22-23, and 2018 will be one for the history books. As you will see, our Foundation team had a great year in 2017, and I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished. The Air Force Museum Store, Air Force Museum Attractions, Development, and the Valkyrie and Refueling Cafés experienced unprecedented growth, in some cases smashing previous sales records. We have been, and will continue to be, successful because of you. I appreciate every smile we see and every kind word we hear. Thank you so much for making a difference.

Philip L. Soucy Chairman, Board of Trustees Air Force Museum Foundation, Inc.

My family and I are good, patriotic Americans, and we believe good defense is important to our country, so the history of the Air Force is important to see and know.”

WORKING

Together

WE MADE 2017 AN AMAZING YEAR! This past year was an amazing one for us at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force as we continued to tell the Air Force story to the public and inspire our youth toward an Air Force or science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career — and your support certainly made a difference! TM

The fourth building continued to bring in visitors to see the new galleries and take advantage of the STEM Learning Nodes. The current and future technologies provided by the Foundation to use in these classrooms allowed us to enhance the innovative educational opportunities available at the Museum. With over 145,000 of our nearly 269,000 educational encounters taking place in the STEM Learning Nodes, your assistance helped to enrich our programs and make a positive impact — especially in the lives of our young students. The generosity of the Foundation also allowed us to provide the materials for two free professional development workshops for deserving educators. The educators were then able to take these materials and use them in their own classrooms; they became STEM education force multipliers, which all started with your support. Finally, what a moving success the commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Doolittle Tokyo Raid was last April! For those of you who attended, you saw first-hand the large crowds who were present at the event, which sometimes in the past has made it hard to navigate through the galleries. However with your help, we were able to implement the first phase of our Wayfinding initiatives — making it even easier to get around the Museum. As we look forward, 2018 will be an exciting year with the opening of the Memphis Belle exhibit in May, and the World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous, commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I in September. We hope you will be able to attend these events, which are made possible in part because of your unwavering support. TM

As the world’s largest military aviation museum, we have a responsibility to collect and preserve the history of the U.S. Air Force, and to tell the stories of those who have served our country. Thank you for all that you do in helping us accomplish our mission! Lt Gen John L. “Jack” Hudson, USAF (Ret) Director, National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

As a retired USAF officer, I cherish what the Museum does to educate our citizenry.

Thank you! Last year you surpassed your historic average by providing more than $272,000 in direct support to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force . These funds mean that you inspire a child, honor a veteran, and preserve the past. TM

Over the next few pages, we will share just a few of the ways you make it possible for us to fulfill our vision of honoring every Airman’s story with a permanent home to inspire future generations and complete our mission to raise funds and awareness to support the Museum. Michael P. Imhoff Executive Director, Air Force Museum Foundation, Inc.

Vision Honoring every Airman’s story with a permanent home to inspire future generations

Mission Raise funds and awareness to support the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force™ mission

Been there many times. Enjoyed each and every visit. The only place I can go and find the 11 different aircraft I flew and share with my grandchildren.”

YOU MAKE

History

POSSIBLE

GIVING IT A PERMANENT HOME

History is front and center at the Museum as visitors experience exhibits that tell the story of the aircraft, missions, and personnel of the USAF. Your generous support makes expansion of the Museum’s exhibit space possible. With the opening of the fourth building, fully 94% of the one-million-square-foot Museum campus has been funded by you. You also support enhancements to the experience Museum visitors enjoy. A great example is the new, comprehensive system of signs you funded for the Museum which makes it easier for visitors find their way around. Veterans can more easily locate the aircraft that reminds them of their service, allowing them to reminisce and share stories with their friends and family who visit with them. Those are the stories that you help preserve.

You get more bang for the buck at the AF Museum. Best museum I’ve ever been to.”

~ David C. Pueringer, Air Force Museum Foundation Member

Book Signing — Dennis R. Okerstrom, author of “Dick Cole’s War, Doolittle Raider, Hump Pilot, Air Commando,”

signed books in the Air Force Museum Store during the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Doolittle Tokyo Raid. Okerstrom was one of four authors available during the event. (Air Force Museum Foundation photo)

YOU MAKE

Education

POSSIBLE

BRINGING HISTORY TO LIFE

Inspiring future generations is a key part of the vision of the Foundation, and your support makes it possible for the Museum to offer numerous educational experiences. As Museum Director Lt Gen John L. “Jack” Hudson, USAF (Ret) noted, it is your generosity that enables the inclusion of current and future technologies in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Learning Nodes so that the Museum can provide “hands-on, minds-on” programs for pre-kindergarten children through senior adults. Family Days are a perfect example of the fun and educational events that your support enables at the Museum.Young visitors experienced meteorology at a recent Family Day, with exciting, hands-on demonstrations including a tornado machine and a Van de Graaff generator to simulate lightning.

It’s a habit that I can’t break.”

~ Cynthia K. Brubaker, Air Force Museum Foundation Member, and Long-time Volunteer

Living History Film Series — A screening of the film “Hidden Figures” featured former NASA Administrator and Astronaut, Col Frederick D. Gregory Sr., USAF (Ret) as guest speaker. Col Gregory was a friend and professional colleague of all three mathematicians featured in the film and provided an inside perspective into the story of these women, known as “human computers.” (Air Force Museum Foundation photo)

YOU PRESERVE THE HONORING EVERY AIRMAN’S STORY

Legacy

Stories are the mission of the Museum — “We are the keepers of their stories.” You make it possible for the Museum and for the Foundation to honor those stories. For example, thanks to your support we are able to bring stories to life through the Living History Film Series, which enables visitors to experience history through film and hear directly from knowledgeable and well-known speakers who engage, educate, and entertain young and old. The story of the Museum and the story of the Foundation are inextricably linked with the stories you help museum visitors experience and share — your generosity provides a place to honor the past and inspire the future.

The USAF has defended freedom. I was privileged to be a part of it. Its story is one I am proud to have witnessed and to remember.”
