PUBLISHER’S NOTE Canton Jones, Urban Gospel Moving Forward y colleague and friend urban gospel artist Canton Jones first appeared on the cover of Airplay 360 when we launched our inaugural issue June 2008. Since then, Canton has evolved as an artist and so has urban gospel. In fact, Canton along with artists like Lecrae and Mr. Del, are masters of their destiny and; therefore, the driving force behind the progression of urban gospel. These artists, not only write, produce and perform their own music, but they sit in the executive chair as well. They are the CEO of their own record labels; and because they are willing to perform at venues and in environments that some may deem inappropriate, they are expanding their brand and the audience as a whole for the gospel industry. By regularly collaborating with other singers and introducing new talent, they have proven their unselfish nature and willingness to mentor. While airplay is important, these business savvy urban gospel artists focus largely on marketing, branding and music sales. And, therefore, have hip hop artists like 50 Cent and Eminem wondering, “Who is Lecrae? Who is Canton Jones?” It’s a question that secular artists would never bother to ask, if these urban gospel artists were not occupying top Billboard positions right next to them. It’s a sure sign that urban gospel is moving forward.

hristian recording artist Nia Allen made a faith move from Columbus, Ohio to Nashville, Tennessee. At the time, it seemed questionable but today, she is reaping the benefits of a crucial decision that literally changed her life and set her music career on the right path. In 2005, she released her debut solo project A New Thing which featured the heartfelt single Wait. Allen has toured as a background vocalist with Dove Award winning artist Nicole C. Mullen, David and Nicole Binion and Calvin Nowell. And, she was a featured artist on CeCe Winans’ Presents Pure Worship and worship leader for Winans’ “Always Sisters Forever Brothers” conference in 2009. Allen’s sophomore CD Here Am I is due for release Winter 2011 but the first single More of You is already available on Amazon and iTunes. In an interview with Airplay 360, Allen shares about her musical journey and how moving to Nashville was faith move and game changer. LM: First I want to get a little of your background in music. Didn’t you go to school to study music? NA: Yes, I went to Berklee College of Music and got a degree in Music Education. We would do R&B, jazz, and gospel. It focused more on the contemporary side of music. We studied everything from Louis Armstrong to Motown so it was really such a great experience. LM: When listening to your music, the influence of CeCe Winans seems so strong. Tell me about her influence in your music. NA: I love her dearly. She’s one of my favorites. There was just something different about her and I was just drawn to her, even her spirit. She’s the same on and off stage. She’s like an inspiration musically and spiritually. Vocally, I love people like Lalah Hathaway, Aretha Franklin and even other artists outside of the gospel arena. I just like good music. LM: How did you come to work with such topnotch producers like Drew Ramsey (India Arie, Nicole C. Mullen) and Daniel Weatherspoon (Donald Lawrence, Karen Clark Sheard)? NA: It’s favor and establishing genuine relationships and trusting God to bring it all together. And, then being in Nashville where many (great producers) live and work. LM: So you think your geographical location has
www.airplay360.com

made a difference in your music career? NA: I think so. There’s just a different standard here. It helps you to cultivate your gift when you’re in environments where you’re surrounded by professional musicians and people that make you step it up. LM: You’re a native of Columbus, Ohio. How did you land in Nashville? NA: Well, after school I went back and served in my church in Ohio and was leading worship and thinking, “What am I supposed to do?” I just felt in my heart Nashville. I didn’t know anybody here. It was really one of those faith moves. I was just trusting God. I didn’t even know that Nashville was the music mecca that it is. I really came here blindly because I had my heart set on New York or L.A. And I was like, “Nashville?” But now I know that Nashville was really a great move (for me). LM: Since moving to Nashville, who is the person that you consider to be like your mentor that you can say has really been the difference maker for me? NA: CeCe. I didn’t know her before I got here but I asked her to mentor me and she said, “Yes.” She made herself available and it’s been a great connection that I’m very, very grateful for. Every effective leader that I know either served under somebody or they learned from somebody else. You have to humble yourself and just say, “I don’t know everything.” You can’t lose because there’s always something that you can learn. For more information www.niaallenmusic.com

LEGAL Brief Listen Up Independent Artists: Are Your Taxes in Order? BY ANGELA D. GREEN, ESQ.
here are many artists who are so engrossed in the creative side of their business or trying to make a living, that they sometimes neglect the administrative side of their business. One important administrative job is paying taxes. As an independent artist you are running your own small business. Artists produce their own product (music, compact discs, posters, t-shirts, etc.) for sale directly to consumers and contract their services as a performer, producer or recording artist to name a few. Even though you do not have an employer taking your taxes out for you, Uncle Sam still expects his share of the pie. It is important that you develop healthy practices now, in the beginning, before you start making the large sums of money. There is a reason why many artists are audited by the Internal Revenue Service. Some of them have been forced to sell their homes, personal belongings 8

GENRE Gospel CD TITLE The Best Gift FEATURED SINGLES Celebrate and An Hour RELEASE DATE November 9, 2010 LABEL Be Natural Entertainment! “The main inspiration behind my music other than giving back unto God from the gift He has given to me, is to provide songs to the world that touch and bless the soul, and can be sung in Sunday morning worship service by choirs of all ages and sizes.”
effectionately known as “A.B.F.”, James “Kelly Fox!” Davis and A Bunch of Friends, come from the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Davis, who likes to be called “Kellz!”, put together the ensemble in early 2010, along with 24 other voices to help record his debut project entitled The Best Gift. The choir and ensemble for the recording consisted of some of Davis’ choir members from Kettering Baptist Church, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland where he is the Director of Music, along with some of his other close friends, and a few friends of some of those friends. So from that, it was a no-brainer for Davis to come up with the name “A Bunch of Friends” also known as A.B.F. The debut project boasts 10 new songs that Davis has written over the last eight years, nine of which focus on the birth of Christ, but can minister and be played all year long. The tenth song is one of their current singles entitled An Hour, which is a psalm about the disciples failure to pray with Jesus for An Hour before his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. The CD provides new choir standards and anthems for both seasons, but will be heard ministering at all times throughout the years to come. Davis called in several other “friends” to help pull the project off, which included notables like Tanya Blount

and her brother Willie Blount, and noted musicians Mo’Horns, Sam Kendrick, Sean Miles, and others. Davis and A.B.F. are currently in the studio working on their sophomore project. Davis has continued to work and minister with his established A.B.F. ensemble: Monique Newman, Jermal Sewel, Lauren Dew, Joy Gardner, Shauna Schwartz, Regina L. Jones, Michael Hill, and D’Angelo Coates. He also credits two original ensemble members DeeDee Roberts and Brian Bailey for helping get A.B.F. off the ground. “My goal is to write music that ministers to the ‘world’, but can still minister to the church, and more importantly “in” the church!”, says Davis. He is grateful to God that as a serious choir director and Director of Music, those are the kind of songs God sends to him. Keep an ear out for their new single entitled I Can’t Get Close Enough, which is expected to be released Summer 2011.Davis’ music is available on CD Baby, iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster and Verizon V-Cast. Tax Season Blues?
How to Take the Sting Out of Taxes BY NICOLE B. SIMPSON, CFP t the turn of the New Year, people become extremely anxious knowing that tax season is lurking around the corner. For low income employees who are expecting a tax return, the new season is a great opportunity to purchase big ticket items, reduce debt, or address a financial matter that cannot be adequately dealt with based on the monthly household income. Wealthy individuals have the ability to hire the best certified public accountants whose only responsibility is to fully understand tax laws and incentives designed to reduce an individual’s overall tax liability. But where does that leave Middle Class America? They are the individuals who make too much money to be considered poor and not enough money to maintain a comfortable standard of living. The tax liability that is placed upon this core group of individuals is often overwhelming and does not proportionately measure up in fairness to both people who are in poverty and the wealthy. What measures can one take to level the playing field? This resolution often comes with suggestions that include having a baby and/or purchasing a house. Both options have tremendous tax benefits. However, the responsibilities with each of those suggestions are too magnificent simply because one wants to reduce their tax liability. Another suggestion would be to save for your retirement by contributing to an IRA account or a company sponsored retirement plan. This is an excellent idea and should be implemented by every working individual. But even with a well funded retirement plan, we are at an age where working a 30-year plan falls short. Therefore, a great starting place begins with exploring what patterns www.airplay360.com
and attributes do the wealthy have in common. Most people who have acquired any significant wealth did so by becoming employers, not employees. Entrepreneurs have the greatest chance to accumulate a positive, healthy net worth. The benefits of being the boss allows you to write off reasonable and ordinary expenses that you incur during the course of doing business. Home based businesses offer the greatest tax incentives because given the nature of your business, several expenses you incur from day to day may be deemed as a business expense. So, if you are looking to reduce your overall tax liability, begin to consider the following questions. 1. Do I have a natural talent and/or skill that if nurtured, can provide me with a revenue stream over time? 2. Can I become a CEO of my own company? 3. Do I have a vision, a dream or a desire? 4. Am I satisfied with my current economic status? 5. Do I see my income changing based on where I am today? 6. Does my job offer me the financial stability that I desire? 7. Will I accomplish my life plans based on my current situation? If you find that you have the ability to become a boss, then you can begin to operate a business you develop which will lead to significant tax incentives.

“A “Dominionaire” is someone that walks in authority and dominion (through God). Life and death is in the power of their tongue. There are songs that take dominion over sickness and certain other situations. …God has given us dominion.” - Canton Jones BY LOUISE M. MOORE
ip hop, urban inspirational artist Canton Jones is adamant about the God-ordained dominion that he possesses. For him, dominion is part of his daily life. It’s not only the authority that he commands as a believer, but it’s the underlining focus of his new two-disc CD Dominionaire, released February 1, 2011 on his Cajo Records recording label. Dominion is so deeply ingrained in Jones to the point that he and his wife Ramona named their son “Dominion.” 14
April 2011
www.airplay360.com
Debuting at #2 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Chart, Dominionaire introduces us to Jones’ current radio single Window as well as other hot tracks like In Da Club; Already Gone featuring D-Maub; Hallelujah featuring Deitrick Haddon, DPB and Mr. Del; Necessary featuring James Fortune and Ramona Estell (Jones’ wife) and well over a dozen other songs. In an interview with Airplay 360, Jones discusses Dominionaire and how it all works together for the greater cause of the Kingdom.
LM: How did you come up with the title “Dominionaire” for your current CD? CJ: A dominionaire is someone that walks in authority (through God) and walks in dominion. Life and death is in the power of their tongue. There are songs that take dominion over sickness and certain situations. When my wife was five months pregnant (with our second child), the doctor said that our unborn son had no heartbeat. Of course, at that time, we panicked but after we calmed down, we took dominion over sickness, death and whatever the doctor was saying (negative) about our baby. We named him “Dominion” and that’s also why we call the CD Dominionaire because of the situations we’ve been through where God has given us dominion. LM: So your son is OK now? CJ: Oh yes, he’s two years old now. He’s a blessed baby…very smart, very active. There’s nothing wrong with him. LM: What’s the movement behind Dominionaire? CJ: It’s pretty much just empowering everybody to take authority in Jesus’ name. It’s everybody taking their rightful place and understanding they can take dominion in every area of their life, from their health to their bank account to relationships to status. We’re just trying to just get back to what God originally intended us to do and that’s to take authority and stop letting fear run us away from what’s rightfully ours. It is a movement but it’s more so just fulfilling the will of God for our lives. LM: So you’re seeing the fruits of this? You’re seeing people’s lives really change because of the message you’re conveying in your music? CJ: Yes. I’ve had parents come up to me and say that my music is a blessing to their kids and to them. I’ve seen guys who got out of jail and said they heard about me in jail. They share my music inside (prison) and they get out and there are a lot of guys who are believers now. So it’s a true impact being made when you see guys that you are not used to seeing in church coming to Jesus. LM: I notice that a lot of times when we see some of these music festivals here in Atlanta, you are the only gospel artist on the stage. How do you make that happen? CJ: I don’t know. Sometimes it’s just people reaching people out. It’s just the favor of God and being able to embrace people. I know that sometimes there are (gospel artists) that may be uncomfortable to be in certain settings that they are not used to. But there is a universal language of www.airplay360.com
Canton Jones, performing “LIVE”
love that if you’re loving on somebody, I don’t care if they’re black, white, young, old, saved or unsaved, people respond to love. It’s a big difference when you’re loving on people but in those settings, it’s not our job to go in there and bash people over the head but to show the love of God and lift up the name of Jesus. LM: How do you balance being a label owner, artist, radio personality (at Praise 102.5 FM Atlanta) and, of course, husband and father? CJ: My schedule is managed by my wife and her team. We (my wife and I) can spend as much time as we can together and can take time off to rest. We don’t have a booking agency that we’re in contract with that’s trying to force us to make a certain quota. We’re in control of our ministry. LM: How does your business sense and college education impact your career? CJ: Education is key for me. I got a degree from Morehouse in Business Administration which allowed me to be an entrepreneur. I was able to teach my wife how to manage our careers and do our own tours, seminars, product and things of that nature. There’s a theory that says this business is 95 percent business and 5 percent talent. So there are smart, brilliant people that are making a good living that you’ve never heard of and it’s simply because of their education. Yoy’ve got to know about booking and being at the right place at the right time and knowing what to say and when to say it; when to speak your broken English and when to put that English together. A native Floridian, Canton Jones resides in Atlanta with his wife Ramona and their two children, Love and Dominion. He’s currently headlining the “Reclaim Tour 2011” featuring 21:03, Da’ T.R.U.T.H. and Willie “P-Dub” Moore. For more information go to www.cantonjones.net

Vocal Health Best Remedies for Your Spring Allergy BY MARK A. WILLIAMS, MD, PhD
Anyone who suffers with severe allergies can attest to the misery that Spring brings, despite the beauty of the blooming foliage. Allergy sufferers may find themselves without many useful treatment options. Multiple over-the-counter medications exist that may provide excellent relief of allergy symptoms, but they may also cause voice problems. Anti-vitamins like Benadryl, Allegra, Zyrtec, Claritin and all others have side effects of drying the vocal cords and potentially causing voice problems. A good alternative to the use of these medications, is allergy shots or drops. The patient undergoes allergy testing to identify his/her specific allergies. Once these are identified, gradually increasing doses of those allergens are given to the patient in the form of injections under the skin. These are given twice weekly and are most safely given in the doctor's office in case potentially life-threatening side effects occur. This obviously introduces a potentially huge
inconvenience to patients, especially considering that therapy usually requires 3-5 years before being completed. A relatively new alternative to the allergy shots is sublingual immunotherapy. Instead of delivering the allergens dose to the patient by way of shots, they are delivered by way of drops that are placed under the tongue. They produce results similar to the shots, but are less painful, can be administered by the patient at home and are safer. Both therapies require several years of treatment before eradicating the allergy. In contrast to the anti-histamines, they do not dry the vocal cords or cause problems with the voice. Mark A. Williams, M.D., Ph.D. is an otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose & Throat doctor) in Nashville, TN. He is the founder of the Voice Care Center of Nashville where he specializes in the prevention and treatment of voice disorders of singers, performers and professional voice users.
