Asthma and Your Singing Voice… How to Manage the Effects By Mark A. Williams, MD PhD

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Protect Your Career, Watch What You Say s a musical artist or industry professional, your career is so important. It may be more than just your gift or your calling but your livelihood too, so please protect it—even from yourself. Don’t let the words that come from your mouth put a negative spin on you as an artist and send your career into a downward spiral. On occasion, and very few I might add, I have had artists or radio promoters lash out at me because my radio network was not playing their music or because I did not call them back as quickly as they preferred. Never ever do this. In business, people may get a flood of calls, as I often do, and not get the opportunity to call you back right away. In fact, many calls may go unreturned. Do not take it personal, and above all, do not speak angrily to the person you are trying to reach when you finally do speak with them. My calls don’t always get answered right away either but I recognize that if I want to make a good impression, build rapport and maintain a good reputation, I must be pleasant, even when I want to yell. Always keep a positive attitude. You never know when an opportunity might come along that has your name on it. You don’t want anyone to hesitate when they see your name because you were less than cordial to them. Watch what you say. Always let your words be good ones to guide your career in the direction God wants it to go—up!

YOUR Image Do You Know How Your Team Helps You Stay on Top? Psst… It’s Mr. Telephone Man BY ADRIAN ANDERSON s many years have passed for us all in our careers and lives, there are constants that ring true regardless of time. Why do amazing projects, songs and TV shows not always lead to phenomenal success? How can something get to such a valid perceived level of success that looks like the only place to go is "UP" all to disappear? What happened to the "BIG PICTURE"? The truth in many cases is as follows: 1. It takes clear vision and a team that has mutual respect for one another to build a career or project up to each level of its success. As a singer, you may show up to perform with no understanding of the level of respect and appreciation you must have for those who elevate your talent to be seen by those who can grow it--business executives. In most cases, it's the team that has relationships with executives. 2. Once that level of success is attained in any field, your true character is revealed. You can become confused about how success really happened causing feelings of entitlement and greed thinking you can take it from here and run with it. YOU CAN NEVER REPLICATE OR MAINTAIN SOMETHING YOU DID NOT BUILD. Just as contributing a note does not compose the symphony, contributing a component will never teach you how to integrate the components for success. The internal systems that fuel the engine www.airplay360.com
ADRIAN ANDERSON won’t be there. Practice humility and have an infrastructure. Without it, there won’t be any genuine long-term success. Now where does the telephone man come into play? Easy. Most business is a phone call away and wise stewards of opportunity want to know what they are really dealing with. Since your team members are usually the ones with the well earned, nurtured relationships, opportunities are just a phone call away. When someone is considering doing business with you, part of the due diligence done is by placing a simple phone call and asking how is this person or their team to work with? The truth will be shared over that phone line. It’s plain and simple. Marketing dollars, posters etc. will not be enough to change anything. The other end of the phone line, that's where your business truth is told. I have witnessed much over the years. I have learned that in general, it's best to observe how people will act once they get what they want. If they remain team minded in the midst of success, Continued TEAM Page 8 AIRPLAY 360

then yes, everyone has a lot to look forward to. If not, then they never were. While some are planning what to do with money they have yet to earn, their next door of opportunity is being shut and the team has moved on to greener pastures, all on a phone call. Years ago I saw someone that I just knew was climbing to the top, only to have it all come tumbling down like an avalanche! I saw how they acted when they got what they wanted and the speed of elimination of those that fueled the climb was hurtful, disappointing and cold, yet a true education. Make sure someone can sing your praises or your organizations praises on that critical call because it will be placed in due season. If you have been working toward your goals, make sure you have an understanding of how your team engine works. Call them, thank them and ask them how you can be of more help moving forward. If apologies are due, sincerely give them. If you have not contributed to the building of relationships then, begin to do so. Place yourself in a position to be the one making those calls of inquiry. It will bring optimal results in all aspects of your business. Get to the mountaintop of achievement and enjoy the view with a peace of mind of how you got there and who you shared it with. Be inspired. Be optimistic. Be honest. Be diligent. Be respectful. Be kind. Be appreciative. Be in your right mind and be involved.

VOCAL Health Voice YOUR Managing the Effects of Asthma: How Professional Singers Cope BY MARK A. WILLIAMS, MD PHD
MARK A. WILLIAMS, M.D., PHD.
nyone who suffers from asthma knows the discomfort and sometimes distress of an attack. And, it always seem to occur at the most inopportune time. Obviously, adequate breath support is important for producing a pleasant speaking and singing voice. When asthma is exacerbated, the airway passages constrict and become inflamed with consequent reduction in airflow to the lungs, oxygenation and ability to produce voice. To combat this, the best therapies are those that prevent exacerbations. These are medications that are usually inhaled on a daily basis. The goal is to prevent use of "rescue" inhalers more than twice weekly. There are many different inhalers on the market, some of which contain steroids. Some are aerosolized and some are in powder form. For the medication to reach the airway passages where they have their effect, they must pass through the vocal cords, depositing this medication along the way. Singers who suffer from asthma should be aware that some of these medications can impact the vibratory function of the vocal cords. Particularly, powdered medication forms are more likely to adhere to the surface of the vocal cords, having a drying effect.
www.airplay360.com
Long-term steroid inhalers can also thin the vocal cords and alter sound production. To minimize the amount of residual medication remaining after administration, patients are instructed to rinse the mouth. Unfortunately, this rinse never reaches the vocal cords or else it would induce violent coughing. Consequently, the medication stays on the surface of the cords. Most of the impact on the vocal cords may be unnoticeable, but if you've been having voice problems and use an inhaler, it may be worthwhile for you to have discussions with your physician about possibly changing the type of inhaler you're using to one that has less impact on the vocal cords (i.e., aerolized, small droplet size). I must emphasize, it is far more important to have your asthma attacks adequately prevented than to minimize the impact of the therapy on the vocal cords.

Black Pearls Are You Sending Up Legitimate Praise? BY DORIS STOKES-KNIGHT
ave you ever wondered why it appears your prayers aren’t being answered or if God really ever hears you when you pray? Is He paying attention to you? I’m pretty sure all of us have experienced that from time to time; however, I’d like to share a few “Black Pearls” of wisdom with you if you think this is happening. Sometimes, you need to do a private “check” to make sure you aren’t doing anything to hinder your own prayers from being heard. When you “praise” are you doing it to be seen, heard or noticed? Or are you doing it from your innermost being out of the deep desire to give Him praise? Is it because He’s more than worthy of your personal praise, for how good He’s personally been irregardless of your current circumstance and most importantly just because He’s WORTHY of your praise? See, all too often I’m afraid people have two extremely wrong perceptions about who the Father really is. He’s either viewed as the “Big Bad Man up there” with a hammer waiting to crack us against the head every time we do something wrong, or He’s the God that’s the “Sugar Daddy” just waiting to give us anything our hearts desire and whatever we want at our every whim. Actually Father God is neither. According to the Word, it is His good pleasure to bless us (Luke 12:32). He enjoys blessing our lives, even when we don’t deserve it, but He’s no fool! He continually blesses us for others to see in plain view when He sees that our lives are dedicated to Him, His purposes for our lives are being lived out and how we CHOOSE to live our lives in order for Him to gain glory from us in the earth. If He can trust the fact that He can use you, you can’t help but to continually be blessed! Obedience to Him and His Word also plays a big part in this as well. But if www.airplay360.com
you are doing whatever you’re doing (supposedly for Him) to be seen, heard, to have your name called or recognized, for titles or position, etc. then your MOTIVE for giving God praise needs to be examined. Pure praise or LEGITIMATE praise truly comes from the heart; down on the inside; not whether you do everything right in life or not. King David was heralded by God Himself as “a man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22) and we all should know King David made many, MANY mistakes in his life--everything from getting another man’s wife pregnant, then having her husband killed in order for him to cover up his sin, then lying to the Prophet about what he had done. But have you ever wondered WHAT was it that God was so attracted to that kept Him going back time and time again to David? Because it certainly wasn’t David’s obedience to do everything God instructed Him to do. The secret to God’s relationship with David was the sweet smell of David’s worship; the honesty of David’s praise! When David screwed up, God placed his sin right in his face and DAVID would “check himself” and REPENT unto God for his wrongdoing! King David wrote in one of my favorite Psalms “create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me!” (Psalm 51:10). Whew…now that’s pure…that’s sincere! David understood the precious relationship that kept him CONNECTED to God wasn’t worth losing by NOT repenting. After four previous female winners, Rogers broke through as the first man, and at 18, the youngest to ever win the popular singing competition. During the show, the Greeleyville, South Carolina native performed Deitrick Haddon's "Well Done", Bebe and Cece Winans' "Lord Lift Us Up", Vanessa Bell Armstrong's "Peace Be Still" and several other inspired songs. Still settling into his newfound status as a national recording artist, Rogers talks to Airplay 360 about how he is handling all of the attention, which gospel stars he hopes to record with in the future and the message he intends to send to youth through his music.
A360: Congratulations on winning Sunday Best! How do you feel about all that? JOSHUA: Oh I feel amazing! I’m excited! A360: I’m excited for you and I’m so excited that you are the first man to win. How does that feel? JOSHUA: That feels great. It’s something that I never thought I would accomplish and I’m just grateful for it. I know that it was only by the favor of God so I give Him all the glory for it. A360: I know that going into a singing competition you’re hearing all these great voices. What did you feel like your chances were of actually making the finals? JOSHUA: With the support of my family and everyone else around me, I always thought that I had a chance but deep down inside, there were a lot of doubts that I would actually accomplish it. I prayed and continued to encourage myself with the word of God. I pushed through it and just watched God do a work, and I’m telling you, He did it. A360: Now we heard all the different songs you sang during the competition. What was your favorite song that you sang? JOSHUA: My all time favorite was (Bishop Paul S. Morton’s) “I’m Still Standing”. I love that song. A360: What does that song mean to you? JOSHUA: Especially at that point in the competition, the words meant so much for me because it says “many didn’t make it and I was one of the ones who did.” At that point, it was just a declaration that I didn’t have to be here and there was a chance that I would not have been, but look at me now and I’m still standing and still here. A360: Tell me Joshua, how has your life changed since you won this competition. JOSHUA: It still hasn’t hit me. Some people tell me, “Oh you’re famous now.” But it still hasn’t hit me. I finally submitted to wearing jeans and a hat when I go out now so too many people don’t recognize me because when you go in the stores and restaurants and stuff, the next thing you know everybody’s at your table and everybody’s coming up to you taking pictures and giving you their phone so you can talk to their momma and grandmamma. I’m still learning a lot. My manager tells me often, “You’ve got pull and you don’t even

I don’t believe it.” A360: You are officially a national recording artist, so out of all the artists out there, is there a particular artist that you would just love to work with? JOSHUA: There are actually a couple. I’ve already sung with Kim Burrell but I would like to record with her. LEGAL Brief Are You Positioned for Your Million Dollar Payday?
BY ANGELA D. GREEN, ESQ. Article first published in Airplay 360 March 2010 issue.
few years ago, an artist walked into my office to discuss me providing legal representation for his music career. This artist was a writer and performer, so quickly the conversation turned to the issue of copyrights and publishing. The artist emphatically told me "Angela, I do not give up any publishing rights." Of course, we all know that the real money is made with copyright ownership and publishing rights. This is not the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s when music writers were getting totally ripped off. They know the business. Now, I thought to myself, "Here is an artist that understands his business." I was going to enjoy working with him. I mean he was regionally known, in heavy rotation locally, was being played on Internet radio, and had written for and performed with other artists on major labels. Therefore, I could understand him not wanting to give up his publishing rights. Not at this stage of the game. So, I told the artist that I would enjoy working with him. All I needed was a copy of his Copyright

Registration Forms and BMI Registration Forms, among other things to compile his file. I must have been talking in tongues because he looked at me as though he did not understand a word I was saying. I asked him had he filed his songs with the U.S. Copyright Office. His eyes darted to the left then back before admitting that because his money was tight, he did not have the required filing fees. I told him, "That's okay; we can prepare that paperwork and you can start saving the money to file the copyright forms." Then, I asked him had he registered himself as a writer and publisher with BMI. A huge smile crossed his face as he said, "Yes, I have. Here is my membership card." I thought to myself, "All is not lost. We have somewhere to start." So, I asked him to give me the information that shows where he registered his songs with BMI. The smile that was once on his face quickly vanished as reality sunk in. "I did not know that once I signed up with BMI, then I had to register each Continued PAYDAY Page 15
PAYDAY Continued From Page 14 individual song," he said. That was when reality finally hit me. My work was cut out for me. The artist was getting airplay but because his music was not registered, he was not in position to be paid. Now this artist was not on a major label, so the most he could have lost was maybe hundreds of dollars, but that's not the point. The point is that he was not in position for millions. At any time, one of those songs could have gotten picked up by a major label, major artist or better yet, he could have become a runaway hit on his independent label. You have to plan for where you want to go. If you publish your material, then you should plan as though any one of those songs can turn into your million dollar payday. I have been preaching this to my clients for years. They know what needs to be done, but they still don't do it. So, I have made it easy for them and anyone one else who needs help through our Music Publishing Registration Service. We will file your PA and SR forms, set qualified writers and publishers up with BMI, ASCAP or SESAC, register performers with Sound Exchange, input individual songs, as well as form Partnerships, Corporations or Limited Liability Companies, review and negotiate music industry contracts, trademarks and much more. Plus, the best thing is we have set flat rates for some of our services for the budget conscious artist.

no hesitation. Tomorrow is not promised. It would not have been a good thing if Christ gave an excuse for our salvation. Any time that the time to improve yourself now is challenged with an excuse, that is the enemy hard at work in your mind. A360: How much of your own personal experience is written into that song? ESTEE: In a brief answer, a whole lot! I will admit my biggest hesitation was becoming a gospel artist because my excuse was that there was a way to be secular and still live righteously. I am not against anyone who DOES do this because only God knows everyone's heart. I just knew that personally this was not a good choice because I didn't want to profess to live one way and be seen ministering another way to the masses.

Estee talks to Airplay 360 about her brand new single “Excuses” on Omega 7 Productions music label. A360: What inspired you to write “Excuses”? ESTEE: We come up with a lot of excuses in our everyday like about mundane things. "I'll do this later, I'll think about it", etc. When you think about it, this is a way to validate our shortcomings and be complacent with mediocrity or "the routine". When it comes to giving your life to God, there should be

A360: When did you write it and how long did it take? ESTEE: "Excuses" is only a few months old. Sometimes God speaks very clearly to me as to what lyrics are best. I can tell when I try to overcompensate bringing a message together, and when that happens I pull back for a while until it is of less effort. I really related to this song, and those that touch the heartstrings the most come most naturally. A360: “Excuses” is the single from which album? ESTEE: "Excuses" is a single from our newest CD that is yet to be released. This project at the moment is untitled but the reveal will be coming soon. A360: You sing with great passion and emotion. Where does that come from? ESTEE: Thank you very much! First, out of all genres of music out there, gospel has always been my strongest tie. I grew up listening to Mahalia
Jackson and even in the secular realm, Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle. Second, writing a song is already creates a big attachment between artist and message, so when I sing it, I want to convey the way

I felt when it came together. I sing about a lot of my feelings, be they past or present, and the time I have spent being on stage has taught me to open up with no fear to the audience. A360: You are an accomplished musician (pianist) as well as vocalist. Do you consider yourself to be a musician first, then singer? ESTEE: I never really thought about it, but yes I do. Let's face it.. there are a lot of people who can sing. That is the easiest part. The harder part is being able to come up with a way that people can feel His message, His ministry, your testimony, your struggle, pain, or joy. A360: Are there any upcoming dates or special events that you’ve scheduled to promote this new song? ESTEE: Yes, both are local events here in Cincinnati.
