What to Consider When Choosing an Air Purifier
Room size: a larger room requires a higher-capacity air purifier.
Usage: many air purifiers target specific needs, like allergy relief.
Filter type: do you prefer a HEPA, active carbon or washable filter?
Filter-less design: many models are available without filters.
Smart technology: some models let you remotely control use.
Cost, brand, add-ons: add up must-haves to find what's best for your budget.
Technology Terms Explained
Thermodynamic sterilization system (TSS): purification technology that features a ceramic core that heats up to around 400°F.
ENERGY STAR® certified: products that save money, reduce energy use and protect the environment by meeting strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy
UV-C light: part of the ultraviolet light spectrum, UV-C light is used by many hospitals to kill germs.
Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) dust rating: using their Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), this tells you how much air is filtered per minute for a dust particle size.
AHAM smoke rating: using their Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), this tells you how much air is filtered per minute for a smoke particle size.
Photocatalyst filter: removes toxic fumes and chemicals.
Plasmacluster ion: splits water molecules into positively and negatively charged ions that spread throughout the room to refresh the air.
Features
Bluetooth: offers remote operation via your compatible smartphone.
1–18 hour timer: lets you select the best schedule.
Fan: most room air cleaners use a fan to suck in air. Those without a fan usually run more quietly
Service indicator: most room and whole-house air purifiers that use an electronic precipitator, and whole-house air purifiers that use a HEPA filter with ionizing circuitry, feature an indicator light lets you know when it's time to replace or clean the filter. A clogged air purifier works inefficiently. You should remove and wash an electronic precipitator's collector-plate assembly every month or so. You can do this in the sink or tub or put it in a dishwasher.
Dust sensor and air quality monitor: in some room air purifiers, these monitors automatically raise or lower the fan speed.
