Introduction Generally, people use the term "search engine" as a metaphor for any web software with a search box that brings large number of results using keywords. A true search engine is different from many searchable directories and search aggregators (or Meta-crawlers). To qualify as a search engine, it should maintain the following processes in near real time, while any other types gather their listings in radically different ways and therefore are inherently different. Attributes of a Real Search Engine: 1. Web crawling (using proprietary algorithms) 2. Indexing (massive number of web pages and url’s) 3. Searching (the web pages in real time)

What you will find in this booklet? In this volume of AIRS Information Paper, we will discuss the types of searchable online information resources that splits these into five (5) categories. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Main Search Engines The main search engines build their own technology and establish a massive infrastructure to crawl and collect web site pages and deliver search results. These search engines run a software that sends a small program called spider or crawler to the world-wide web that is responsible for web content collection and their indexing. An example of such search engine, are Google or Bing. They send out Web crawlers or spiders that visit websites and follow the links in each Web page, like the way you might browse pages on the Internet. The Web crawlers (also called robots, spiders or bots) read the contents of each Web page to determine the subject and context of the information. They also collect other data, such as the number of links to a page and the reputation of the websites that link to it, to decide about the quality of the information. This process of intelligent determinations is made possible by applying proprietary algorithms. The Web crawler updates an index that enables the search engine to quickly present you with a list of Web pages when you perform a search. The list of main search engines includes:

Search Results Aggregator (Meta-crawlers) Unlike search engines, meta-crawlers don’t crawl the web themselves to build web page index. Instead, they allow searches to be collected (aggregated) from several main search engines all at once. These search engines don't have their own search technology or the huge and expensive infrastructure as the main search engines, instead, they bring and display on their proprietary search result pages. In short, they usually concentrate on front-end technologies such as user experience and novel ways of displaying the information and earn revenues by displaying ads. One example is a “WebCrawler”, a metasearch engine that blends the top search results from Google Search and Yahoo! Search. WebCrawler also provides users the option to search for images, audio, video, news and provides even more options. More examples are mentioned below:  Info.com - Info.com provides results from 14 search engines and pay-per-click directories, including Google, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo, Kanoodle, LookSmart, About, Overture and Open Directory.  Metacrawler - Uses innovative metasearch technology to search the Internet’s top search engines, including Google, Yahoo! Search, MSN Search, Ask Jeeves, About, MIVA, LookSmart and more. Search refinement available.  Monster Crawler - Meta Search Engine Monster Crawler allows a simultaneous multi-thread search of Google, Yahoo & Bing with just one click!

The Specialized Search Engines A “specialized search engine” also called “vertical search engines” are built to drill down into a more specific type of information. These search engines can collect a filtered and less cluttered search results when compared to the main search engines or typical meta-search engines. What makes these special, is their ability to use powerful “customized filters”; and some times it has its own database to deliver a specific type of information or information in specific file formats. We will classify them in two types: 1. 2.

Customized Meta-Search Engine These are a type of Meta-Search Engines that deliver combined search results from a combination of search results of main search engines or specialized search engines and/or web directories; or by using the combinations of these search streams. The classification of these meta-crawling specialized search engines is determined by their ability to filter a niche set of search results. Here are some of the examples:  Ixquick - [Metasearch engine with options for choosing what results are based on. Respects search privacy and results can be opened into an Ixquick proxy window.]  Carrot Search – [Metasearch engine based on a variety of search engines. Has clickable topic links and diagrams to narrow down search results.]  iBoogie – [Metasearch engine with customisable search type tabs. Search rankings have an emphasis on clusters.]  iSeek – [Meta-search results are from a compilation of authoritative resources from university, government, and established non-commercial providers]  PDF Search Engine - Searches for documents with the following extensions: doc, pdf, chm, rtf, txt.

Specialized Content Search Engines A specialized content search engine focuses on a specific segment of online content. They are also called specialty or topical search engines. The content area may be based on topicality, media type, or genre of content – further to this the source of content and the inherent function it performs in transforming the content defines the type of such search engines. We will identify the types by grouping them in following three units. 1. 2. 3.

Information Contribution Public Contributions This searchable database is maintained internally by the help of public contributors. The data is then made available to the public for sharing. An example is the social media contributions and reference platform contribution as in Wiki’s. A few good examples of these are:  YouTube – Video files collections.  Vimeo – Video files collections.  LinkedIn – Social media search for corporates. Page | 7

 Facebook – Personal social media sharing.  Reditt – Forum contribution and sharing of information platform.

Private Contributions This searchable database is created internally by the efforts of the search engine vendors. The data is made available to the public for viewing through their proprietary search engine. Aa an example:    

Netflix – Provides selected movies for online viewing. Reuters – Generates its own news content from global correspondents. Tineye - This is an image search and recognition company. It maintains its own database of photos. Lexisnexis - LexisNexis provides legal research, legal information and workflow solutions for legal professionals & law firms.

Specialized Function These are the search engines that are programmed to perform a certain type of functions that are proprietary and unique. They execute tasks that involve collecting web content as information and work on it with algorithms of their own, adding value to the result it produces. An example of such types of search engines are:  Wayback Machine Organization – Maintains records of web sites/web pages that are no longer available online as a historical record.  Alexa – Performs web analytics and measures traffic on web sites and provide performance metrics.  Alpha Wolframa - This is more than a search engine. It gives you access to the world's facts and data and calculates answers across a range of topics.

Information Sourcing This is a type of search engine’s that are classified based on the information it retrieves online by special arrangement with outside sources on consistent basis. Some of their examples are found under the broader headings mentioned below:

 Public Catalogues

Directories A web directory or link directory is a directory on the World Wide Web. A collection of data organised into categories. It specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links. A web directory is not a search engine and does not display lists of web pages based on keywords; instead, it lists web sites by category and subcategory. Most web directory entries are also not found by web crawlers but by humans. The categorization is usually based on the whole web site rather than one page or a set of keywords, and sites are often limited to inclusion in only a few categories. Web directories often allow site owners to submit their site for inclusion, and have editors review submissions for fitness. The directories can be distinguished into two major categories. 1.

Public Directories. [Directories that does not require any registration or fee.]

Private Directories [Requires registration and charge fee for inclusions in its listings.]

Public Directories

General Public Directories That carry common reference subjects, interests, content domains and their sub categories. Examples are:  DMOZ - The largest directory of the Web. Its open content is mirrored at many sites, including the Google Directory until July 20, 2011.  A1 Web Directory Organization - This is a general web directory that lists various quality sites under popular categories and relevant sub categories.  PHPLink Directory - Free Directory Script phpLD was first released to the public as a free directory script in 2006 and we continue to offer this free download.

Subject Based or Domain Specific Public Directories  Hot Frog - Hot frog is a commercial web directory providing websites categorized topically and regionally.  Librarians Index to Internet - A directory listing program from the Library of California.  OpenDOAR - This is an authoritative directory of academic open access repositories.

The Search Engines for Deep Web Deep Web is referred to the data which are not indexed by any standard search engine such as Google or Bing, Yahoo. The 'Deep Web' of “Invisible Web” refers to all web pages that search engines cannot find, such as user databases, registration-required web forums, webmail pages, and pages behind paywalls. However, that's where Invisible Web search engines, tools, and directories come in. There are many Invisible Web search tools that you can use. Here are some search engines, directories, and databases you can use.

 Archival Research - Search the online catalog and other National Archives resources at once for information about our records.  OCLC - Search the database to find millions of digital resources from thousands of contributors, especially open access resources.  Wolfram Alpha - Using expert-level knowledge, this search engine doesn’t just find links; it answers questions, does analysis, and generates reports.  Online Journals Search Engine - In this free, powerful scientific search engine, you can discover journals, articles, research reports, and books in scientific publications.  Directory of Open Access Journals - When you need top-quality journal writings for free, the Directory of Open Access Journals is a great place to check out. You’ll get access to a searchable journal of full-text quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.

Veoh works, but it’s pretty far down my list of sites. It’s essentially one of the YouTube clones that is still around and kicking. It has a video box on the front page that autoplays when you visit the site. That’s probably on my top ten list of things that will make me immediately leave a site. But if you can look past this feature, they do have an active user base that uploads content to the site. The search results only appear to be of Veoh content though, so if your favorite content creator isn’t using the site, the likelihood that you’ll find their content there is pretty low.

One surprising source for a video search engine is eHOW. Of course, it tends to work better when searching for a how-to type of video, but it can display some other results as well. To use the search engine simply type your search query in the box at the top of the page and on the resulting search, click on “Videos” on the left hand side of the page to see video results related to your query. One drawback to eHow is that it only shows results for videos posted on the eHow site, not the internet at large. So while it doesn’t have the same sponsored content or breadth of content as other search engines, it does a great job at searching for relevant how-to content.

Vevo is a music video search engine that hopes to help you find exactly what you’re looking for and it numbers more than 12 billion monthly views.
