We are delighted to welcome you to the second edition of ART HK. Building on the success of the inaugural Fair last May, we have assembled a strengthened line-up of over 110 galleries from 24 different countries reinforcing the Fair’s two core strengths of quality and geographical diversity. This year we introduce a new section to the Fair: SCMP | ART FUTURES which will showcase young, fresh and exciting work from around the world. Asia Art Archive is returning this year as our Education Partner with an extensive programme of film screenings, panel discussions and talks by leaders in their respective fields. Para/Site Art Space will be conducting introductory guided tours both in English and Cantonese. A snapshot of artists working in countries along the Persian Gulf will take centre stage at this year’s Fair in a special exhibition – Crossing the Persian Gulf - curated by Charles Merewether, formerly director of the Biennale of Sydney. Merewether explores the varied forms of creativity currently emerging from the region. The works, painting, photography, printmaking exemplify a search for a personal language by each artist informing their individual distinction both as a world view and relation to the challenging cultural and physical environment in which they live and work. The Hong Kong art scene is building a critical mass, and ART HK is very much a part of this development, with numerous events taking place across the City as a direct result of the Fair. ART HK is now in pole position to develop into the significant platform in the region for networking amongst gallerists, collectors, artists and curators from around the world. We would like to thank our sponsors and partners for their very active support. We would also like to express our gratitude to Sir David Tang, ART HK’s Honorary Patron, to our distinguished Advisory Group, and to the Selection Committee who went through over 250 applications to ensure a world class line-up of the very best galleries showing the very best artists. We are particularly grateful for the continued support of the participating galleries. They share our vision that the art scene is becoming more and more global, with Asia playing a crucial part in it, culturally as well as economically. We look forward to welcoming you to ART HK 09.

Introduction
The Gulf States are composed of Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE and Oman, a region far more diverse in its cultural history than would otherwise appear. In particular the cultural and artistic histories of both Iran and Iraq stretch back in a manner far more in keeping with those countries of the Middle East such as Egypt, Lebanon or Syria in terms of centers of culture and the artistic, most notably artists, writers, art schools, museums, collectors. And yet to, due to the ongoing war and internal conflict, contemporary culture as an integral part of daily life in Iraq has suffered a violent disruption. For different reasons both internally and externally imposed, Iran has not been able to demonstrate the extraordinary breadth and depth of culture, especially in its contemporary manifestations.
The UAE
In recent years, the UAE, and in particular Dubai, has become critical to the support, exposure and diffusion of modern and contemporary art of the region. The reasons are complex having to do in part with the role Dubai played as a relatively neutral and therefore vital link between countries, otherwise limited by ethnic and ideological differences and alignment. At the same time, it has continued to be a vital crossroad and point of access and exchange for the trading between countries of the region and with Western countries. This has been crucial to developing a potential for a more broadly-based collector base around the growing number of Western ex-pats working in the region. This development model is radically distinct from that of the West, in a sense almost in reverse. Specifically, the State and public Museum has played a crucial role in the West, especially in regards to the aesthetic education of its public and formation of audiences for the reception of art. To the contrary in the Gulf States there are almost no museums devoted to modern and contemporary art and those that exist are under-functioning or limited by resources as to their vision and ambition. This is being addressed in a particular manner in Abu Dhabi, insofar as developing partnerships with both the Louvre and Guggenheim and potentially other major museums through which staff, collections and exhibitions can be developed and managed. In Dubai, the concept of the museum has been faced by the kinds of financial resources necessary for their success as much as the degree of professional staff required to create a vital environment. This remains for now a stark absence when seen amidst its endless commercial and residential towers. This is most critical when it comes to the cultural life a city provides its residents. In this particular case, Dubai lacks sufficient cultural spaces for the ongoing exhibition of histories of the visual arts, collections and ongoing development of visual arts programs for its communities. Having said that Sharjah, the neighboring Emirate to that of Dubai, remains the most important cultural hubs of the country with a growing museum infrastructure, Biennale and other institutions begin development under the guidance of its progressive leadership. From this perspective, the emergence of galleries has played a critical role in the development of a contemporary art world. Since 2006 this has been augmented by the entry of the Auction House into the region, taking advantage of the tremendous body of modern and contemporary art that has come out of Iran, Iraq as well as the other Gulf countries with less ability to function internationally such as Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait. In this regard, Dubai’s relatively open-minded view of contemporary art and culture (in comparison with some of its neighbors) has enabled the city to become a place for artists unable to work and live in the countries of origin or permanent residence, as much a space for exhibiting work that may not be seen otherwise.
The Exhibition
From this point of view, we may best refer to the histories of modernism in the Arab world, in which the contemporary has emerged. The idea of the contemporary itself belongs both to the conditions of its possibility. On the one hand, it belongs specifically to the enduring traditions of calligraphy and on the other, the exchange with other artistic traditions, most especially from the West but, equally from artists working within the Middle East without the force of working within the defining directives of Islamic culture. By saying this, I am arguing against a wholesale reduction of contemporary art from the region in terms of an East/West binary as well as the need to distinguish between these countries in the light of the cultural and religious traditions in which they were founded. Here, in regard to an exhibition of artists from the region of the Gulf, we need refer to a dominantly Islamic culture and faith. This is distinct from that of other countries such as Egypt or Lebanon where Islamic culture represents a sector of the community and whose governments are predominantly secular. In this regard, they have established a predominantly secular form of civil society. Seen from this point of view, the work of artists in the Gulf is distinct from that of these Middle Eastern countries. Having said this however, the long and complex histories of artistic practice in Iran and Iraq must be distinguished as being both distinctive from that of neighboring Gulf countries, while having certain affiliations with the enduring history of Islamic traditions. Further, we may advance a view that contemporary cultural practices are a critically significant means of opening up cultural habits and conventions to something broader, and more idiosyncratic in the character of the practice. This has produced a force of movement that while not viewed as symptomatic of a secular society has nonetheless been open to difference in a manner not always characteristic to a society in which the relation between the state and religious leadership is close. What in fact such artistic practices implicitly advance is a cultural formation that is principally secular in foundation and in form. This offers the conditions and openness for dialogue both contributing to the strengthening of the practice itself and recognition of its value in regard to exploring the imaginative as much as the visual domain. The artists chosen for ‘Crossing the Gulf’ represent a handful of some of the most exciting artists working in the region. The artists include Farideh Lashai, Mahmoud Hamadani and Rokni Haerizadeh, all orginally from Iran, Ebtisam Abdul Aziz from the UAE, Tarek al Ghoussein a Kuwait Palestinian who has lived and worked in the UAE for many years and Halim al Karim, originally from Iraq, but now also living in the UAE. To this end, the exhibition of these six artists pays respect to the role of three of the most significant galleries XVA, Third Line and B21. Their role has been critical in showing and supporting their work through their own gallery, their publications and in art fairs in which they participate. The exhibition provides a glimpse of the depth and range of practices occurring across three countries of Iran, the UAE, and Iraq. And yet in each of these three cases it includes artists who have either left their country of origin, or exhibit elsewhere within the region. Together, they show a dynamism of experimentation both at the level of the medium and subject. More than this, the potential of this dynamism has been the possibility of an exploration that exceeds the traditions or received conventions of artistic practice, exceeds the demands of nationalist agendas or the oppressive realities of oppression that have over-determined the future of so many lives. There is an openness in this regard which has been made possible by circumstance of being sported by the environment of Dubai and the spirit of contemporary cultural initiatives. It may be in fact that this is the only way in such an environment in which the role of the museum in relation to that of the state remains undefined or where the degree of autonomy possible remains uncertain. For this we need return to the question of civil society and what shape it takes and role it assumes within such societies. It cannot be simply the same as that of the West or that of the Asian region. However, what we do know and share is the capacity and potential of the arts to articulate points of view and perspectives if not imagine forms that open the eyes and mind to thinking beyond. These six artists offer the viewer this opportunity, an opportunity to reflect upon worlds in which they live as much as worlds to which they aspire, worlds that are both specific and yet whose form and character are a part of us all. Charles Merewether

PANEL DISCUSSION - CHINA FOCUS
4.00 – 6.00 pm | Rm N106 | Reinvesting in Contemporary Chinese Art Johnson Chang Curator, 3rd Guangzhou Triennale & Director, Hanart TZ Gallery | Hu Fang Director, Vitamin Creative Space | Uli Sigg Collector | Pauline Yao Critic & Curator | Qiu Anxiong Artist | Moderated by Philip Tinari Critic & Curator With over a hundred international and local galleries opening in Beijing and Shanghai, unprecedented prices being fetched for Chinese artists at auction and the establishment of numerous investment funds around the world, the rise of Chinese art in the first decade of the 21st century is inevitably being read in relation to its economic value as an attractive investment opportunity. As we witness global recession hit all stratas of society, the relation of Chinese art to the global economy becomes more evident with galleries and individuals having to reassess their financial strategies and positions. On the flip side, we see the emergence of numerous voices who welcome this correction in the market as an opportunity for ideas, quality and content to be nurtured over prices, commodity and spectacle. We ask key individuals in the field to reflect on the past decade, discuss the future of art production and circulation in China in the face of global recession, and talk about the projects that most excite them. Saturday 16th May
2.00 – 4.15 pm | Rm N106 | Art + Design Ron Arad Founder, Ron Arad Studio | Defne Ayas Consulting Director, Arthub | Daravuth Ly Co-Director, Reyum | Siu King-chung Assistant Professor, School of Design, HK Poly U | Michael Lin Artist | Moderated by Charles Merewether Curator & Artistic Director, 2006 Sydney Biennale Opening remarks: In recent years, the region has seen an increasing number of exhibitions that explore the crossover of art and design, from the Mori Art Museum’s Roppongi Crossings, MOT’s Space for your Future, the Chanel Mobile Art project to the 6th Shanghai Biennial HyperDesign. As Hong Kong embarks on building M+, a major international museum with a mission to focus on 20th and 21st century visual culture, questions as to how to approach the interdisciplinary are raised. For this panel discussion we look at the ways in which the bridging of art and design are manifesting themselves; whether we need a new vocabulary for an expanding discourse; and how museum strategies are revisited to include these recent developments. At the same time, we question the presumed distinction between art, craft and design in a region where the boundaries have not historically been so clear cut. 4.45 – 6.15 pm | Rm N106 | Participation, Collaboration & The Everyday Leung Mee-ping Artist | Frances Morris Head of Collections, International Art, Tate Modern | Hammad Nasar Founder, Green Cardamom | Rirkrit Tiravanija Artist | Moderated by Vasif Kortun Director, Garanti Contemporary Art Center Artists and curators internationally have been working around these themes for decades. And in many regions of the world, where there isn’t a museum going public nor infrastructure, where the white cube is not definitive, participation, collaboration and the everyday are key in thinking about contemporary art practice and its’ public. At the same time, by bringing these projects and activities in to a more formal museum structure, the very nature of the museum is transformed. AAA invites artists and experts to discuss these issues both as alternative and in relation to the museum. Sunday 17th May

The winning artist will receive a cash prize and be invited to create a front cover for the SCMP’s Sunday Post Magazine. We are grateful to the panel of art critics and curators who will judge the prize for the best emerging artist within the ART FUTURES section.
SCMP | ART FUTURES
After the first edition of ART HK in May 2008, the view was taken that in order to attract new galleries with a more experimental programme, it was important to incentivise them by subsidising their participation. It is vital for an art fair to nurture young talent, be it artists or galleries, who might be the stars of the future. Younger, less expensive art also offers an interesting opportunity for young or first-time buyers. Emerging art is often fresher and more diverse, as well as giving buyers the opportunity to invest in artists at a very early stage within their careers.
SCMP | ART FUTURES
ART HK 09 is proud to present the SCMP | ART FUTURES section at the Fair this year as a new initiative with the specific intention of attracting younger galleries to the Fair, showcasing emerging artistic talent from around the world.
