Introduction The 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships serves as major qualifying event for countries in the Oceania region to secure quota places at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Following a qualifying period that began at the 2010 World Shooting Championships nations have had the opportunity to secure quota places at all major international events. Following this lengthy process, a further 18 quota places are now available to win at the 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships at the Sydney International Shooting Centre. These 18 places are available over the 15 Olympic disciplines, with one available in each discipline, while two will be available in the men’s skeet, men’s trap and men’s 50m rifle prone. Six countries will compete at the 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships –      

Australia New Zealand Fiji New Caledonia French Polynesia Niue

Quota Places To compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games countries need to qualify quota places in order to compete. Each national shooting federation must earn "Quota Places" - one starting position to send athletes to the next Olympic Games. Only a total of 390 athletes will be able to compete in the 15 events across the Olympic disciplines at the Games. For the 2012 Olympic cycle quota places were available to win at the –          

2010 ISSF(shotgun, pistol, rifle) World Championships 2011 World Cup Concepcion (shotgun) 2011 World Cup Sydney (shotgun, rifle, pistol) 2011 World Cup Beijing (shotgun, rifle, pistol) 2011 World Cup Fort Benning (rifle, pistol) 2011 World Cup Changwon (rifle, pistol) 2011 World Cup Munich (rifle, pistol) 2011 World Cup Maribor (shotgun) 2011 ISSF World Championships (shotgun) Continental (Africa, Europe, Oceania, Asian, Americas) shooting championships

A quota place guarantees that someone from a given country - not necessarily the athlete who earned it - will be competing in that Olympic event. Each nation can earn a maximum of 28 quota places: one each in trap and skeet women, and two each in all other events. Each athlete is only allowed to win one quota place for their country.

Australian Shooting Team The Australian Shooting Team has so far qualified four quota places for the 2012 London Olympic Games. These quota places were won by – Lalita Yauhleuskaya

At the 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships Australia is able to win a further 15 quotas from the 18 that are available. Up to nine athletes from each country can be selected for each discipline at the 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships but only the top three are able to compete for the quota place. Australia has therefore selected an A, B and C team for the majority of disciplines, with only the A Team able to win the quotas for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Athletes in the B and C team are still able to win the Oceania title. The full Australian team for the 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships is available on the AISL website.

Olympic Selection The Australian Shooting Team will be nominated to the Australian Olympic Committee following the World Cup event in London next April (dates) that also serves as the official test event for the 2012 London Olympic Games. This team nomination will be based on the selection criteria available on the AISL website. Performance Qualifying Score’s (PQS) are ultimately crucial when nominating the Australian team to the Australian Olympic Committee. 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships Media Guide

Page 7

In events where Australia has only secured one quota place, the athlete nominated to the AOC will be the one who has shot the most PQS’s. In each of the 15 Olympic disciplines, national selectors choose the benchmark score that serves as the PQS mark for that event. To receive a PQS, the athlete must equal or better this score. 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships Events Shotgun Men’s Trap Competition Days – Wednesday November 30 – Thursday December 1 (FINAL 3.30pm December 1) Olympic Quota Places Available – 2 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – Adam Vella, Matthew Stokes, Daniel Di Pietro

Australia has already secured one quota place in the men’s trap following dual Olympic gold medallist Michael Diamond’s silver medal at the ISSF World Cup event in Maribor, Slovenia in July this year. Australia has the chance to win one more quota in the men’s trap with the charge to be led by 2004 Athens Olympic Games bronze medallist Adam Vella. Vella has enjoyed an excellent year on the domestic scene, winning three of the four Australia Cup events, as well as the Australia Cup Final at the end of October.

Women’s Trap Competition Day – Wednesday November 30 (FINAL 2.30pm November 30) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – Suzy Balogh, Catherine Skinner, Laetisha Scanlan

Australia has a strong contingent of women’s trap shooters led by 2004 Athens Olympic Games gold medallist Suzy Balogh. 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships Media Guide

Page 9

Despite Australia not having won a quota yet for the women’s trap, the team has narrowly missed out on several occasions. Catherine Skinner made the 2011 World Championships final in Serbia earlier this year, and also won a silver medal at the 2011 World University Games. The third member of the team is Laetisha Scanlan won a gold medal in the women’s trap pairs at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. With only one quota place available in this event, the Australian contingent’s greatest challenge will come from New Zealand shooter Natalie Rooney.

Men’s Double Trap Competition Day – Monday November 28 (FINAL 2.15pm November 28) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – Russell Mark, Steve Haberman, Nick Kirley

Five times Olympian and 1996 Olympic gold medallist Russell Mark will spearhead the Australian men’s double trap team. Mark will be joined by 1995 world champion Steve Haberman and rising star Nick Kirley in the three man team that will look to hold off the challenge from New Zealand. Mark made the final of the World Cup in Sydney earlier this year, as well as shooting a season best 144 from 150 at a Grand Prix event in Serbia. Haberman shot a season high 145 at the Singapore Open shortly before the world championships, while Kirley has been prominent at all domestic events.

Men’s Skeet Competition Day – Monday November 28 – Tuesday November 29 (FINAL 1.30pm November 29) Olympic Quota Places Available – 2 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 2 Australian ‘A’ Team – Clive Barton, Paul Adams, Keith Ferguson 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships Media Guide

Page 10

Two quotas places are up for grabs in the men’s skeet with Australia a great chance of securing both places. 2000 Sydney Olympic Games representative Clive Barton has worked himself into good form over the past months, including a season high 121 from 125 at the Australia Cup Final last month. Paul Adams, who holds Australia’s highest score of 2011 with a 122 at Australia Cup 4 in Perth, joins Keith Ferguson as the remaining members of Australia’s team.

Women’s Skeet Competition Day – Monday November 28 (FINAL 3pm November 28) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 0 Australian ‘A’ Team – Lauryn Mark, Laura Coles, Zita Dettori

Australia has already won its maximum of one quota in the women’s skeet, which was achieved by Lauryn Mark at the 2011 World Cup in Sydney. Mark, who finished fourth at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, finished ninth at that event and has grown in confidence across the year as she aims to compete at her second Olympic Games. Shooting alongside Mark at the 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships will be Laura Coles and Zita Dettori, with all three women aiming for a crucial PQS, which is used in selecting the team for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Rifle Men’s 10m Air Rifle Competition Day – Monday November 28 (FINAL 11.30am November 28) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – John Coombes, William Godward, Tyren Vitler

2011 Oceania Shooting Championships Media Guide

Page 11

John Coombes, Will Godward and Tyren Vitler will fly the flag for Australia in the men’s 10m air rifle. Neither of the three has competed at an Olympic Games to date, but will all be eager to win the quota place for Australia before duelling amongst themselves for the chance to be selected for London. Coombes, Godward and Vitler have shared the domestic title among themselves throughout 2011 and all three are capable of winning the quota on their day.

Women’s 10m Air Rifle Competition Day – Monday November 28 (FINAL 1.45pm November 28) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – Robyn Van Nus, Alethea Sedgman, Alice Styles

Robyn Van Nus has performed strongly in the women’s 10m air rifle during 2011 and set a new Australian record of 398 from 400 at Australia Cup 3 in Brisbane earlier this year. Van Nus, Sedgman and Styles will need to be on their A game however, with New Zealand’s Jenna McKenzie a major threat in the race for the solitary quota place available in Sydney.

Men’s 50m Rifle Prone Competition Day – Wednesday November 30 (FINAL 11am November 30) Olympic Quota Places Available – 2 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 2 Australian ‘A’ Team – Warren Potent, Dane Sampson, Thomas Versace

The men’s 50m rifle prone is one of only three events at the Oceania Championships which offers competitors two quota places for next year. 2008 Beijing Olympic Games bronze medallist Warren Potent remains Australia’s number one ranked athlete in the event, and despite having a lean year in 2011, has begun to come into form over the past couple of months.

2011 Oceania Shooting Championships Media Guide

Page 12

Potent is beginning to face a challenge from rising Queenslander Dane Sampson who has shot a string of excellent scores across the middle part of 2011, while fellow Queensland youngster Thomas Versace has also improved throughout the year. Australia will be hoping to secure both of the quota places in this event, but will have a fight on their hands from the trio of New Zealand shooters.

Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Position Competition Day – Tuesday November 29 (FINAL 1pm November 29) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – Dane Sampson, Will Godward, Chris Gulvin

Another tough task for the Australian trio of Dane Sampson, Will Godward and Chris Gulvin will come in the men’s 50m rifle 3 position. If Dane Sampson wins the quota in this event, he will be ineligible to win a quota the following day in the men’s 50m rifle prone. One of the most gruelling events on the program, shooters will face a three hour match where they shoot 40 shots from each of the three position – kneeling, standing and prone.

Women’s 50m 3 Position Rifle Competition Day – Wednesday November 30 (FINAL 2.45pm November 30) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – Robyn Van Nus, Alethea Sedgman, Jennifer Hens The same scenario faces Robyn Van Nus, Alethea Sedgman and Jennifer Hens in the women’s 50m 3 position rifle. If Van Nus or Sedgman are able to pick up a quota in the women’s 10m air rifle on Day 1 of the event, they will be unable to qualify another place in this event. New Zealand rising star Jenna McKenzie is once again the major threat, with the outcome of this quota likely to come down to the wire. 2011 Oceania Shooting Championships Media Guide

Pistol Men’s 10m Air Pistol Competition Day – Wednesday November 30 (FINAL 12pm November 30) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – Daniel Repacholi, David Moore, Chris Roberts

There is one quota place available in the men’s 10m air pistol with Daniel Repacholi looking for a chance to compete at his third Olympic Games. Consistency has been the problem for Australia’s shooters in this event in recent times, with the first two strings important for Australia’s team to gain the confidence to perform well. Repacholi will be joined by David Moore and Chris Roberts on the starting line.

Women’s 10m Air Pistol Competition Day – Wednesday November 30 (FINAL 2pm November 30) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 0 Australian ‘A’ Team – Dina Aspandiyarova, Lalita Yauhleuskaya, Hayley Chapman

Australia has already qualified both available quotas in the women’s 10m air pistol with Australia’s trio of Dina Aspandiyarova, Lalita Yauhleuskaya and Hayley Chapman just competing to take out the Oceania Championships. Yauhleuskaya won a quota at the 2010 World Championships, while Aspandiyarova picked up the second quota at the World Cup in Korea earlier this year. Expect Australia to potentially score a trifecta of medals in this event.

Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Competition Day – Tuesday November 29 (FINAL 2pm November 29) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – David Chapman, Bruce Quick, Lucas Finken

David Chapman, Bruce Quick and Lucan Finken will battle it out for Australia in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol and will be favourite to win the quota. The race should then be on between the trio to take the next step and win selection on the team for next year in London. Quick has featured at the past two Olympic Games, while Chapman made his debut on the Olympic team at the Sydney Games eleven years ago.

Women’s 25m Sport Pistol Competition Day – Monday November 28 (FINAL 3.15pm November 28) Olympic Quota Places Available – 1 Olympic Quota Places available for Australia – 1 Australian ‘A’ Team – Hayley Chapman, Emily Esposito, Chloe Esposito

The young trio of Hayley Chapman, Emily Esposito and Chloe Esposito will lead the charge for Australia in the women’s 25m sport pistol. Australia has a great chance of winning this quota and it will give the chance for one of these talented youngsters to compete next year in London. Chloe Esposito has already secured qualification for London, but in the sport of modern pentathlon and has the chance to compete in two different sports next year.

There will also be one Olympic quota place available for Australia’s men in the 50m pistol, with Alfio Casagrande, David Moore and Bruce Quick the Australian representatives. New Zealand once again poses the strongest challenge to Australia.
