Gallery Meets Valley: The Convergence of Art and Residence Harmonizing Heritage with Innovation: Crafting Community and Art in Harlem’s Urban Fabric “Canyon-ria” is an architectural project that reimagines traditional arcade designs with a canyon-like structure. It mixes various housing types with shared living spaces, creating a seamless blend of private, public, and open areas. This design fosters community interaction. Located on West 128 Street, it extends from the first to eighth floor, integrating open galleries into an existing building. This design goes beyond typical housing, offering spaces for artists and residents (both short and long-term), enhancing local community life and reflecting the area’s rich artistic history. Canyon-ria combines traditional red brick with modern materials, respecting Harlem’s architectural heritage while introducing a new communal aesthetic, described as a “gentle handshake” with neighboring buildings. More than just housing, it reshapes urban interactions, blending residential, educational, and artistic spaces. This layout encourages a natural flow of urban life from West 128 Street to Convent Avenue. Collabrator: Anson Lee Softwares: Rhino, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign

Dating Commune: Reimagining Dating Apps into a Co-Living Mixed-Use Space to Foster Partnership Housing, Marriage, and Fertility: Inspired By Singapore’s Unique Approach to Tackling its Declining Birth Rate. This project investigates the innovative strategies that Singapore and Japan have implemented to address their declining birth rates. It explores how Singapore intertwines marriage policies with housing benefits, intending to stimulate marriage rates among the younger generation. Given Singapore’s unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures, it concurrently grapples with the fertility crisis common in developed Western nations while retaining the Eastern cultural emphasis on family and lineage continuity. This confluence leads the government’s housing and fertility policies to favor newlywed young couples, indirectly prompting them to contemplate marriage as a strategy to alleviate housing affordability pressures. Asian reality shows to promote new dating approaches. This cohabitation with strangers approach may offer a practical ‘pre-marriage trial,’ facilitating the discovery of a compatible partner through shared living experiences while concurrently reducing rental burdens. cooling amenities to the broader community. Softwares: Rhino, Grasshopper, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign
16
RESEARCH & BACKGROUND: HOUSING & MARRIAGE IN SINGAPORE The project seeks to fuse the concepts of dating apps and co-living communities with the objective of developing novel housing models that cater to the evolving lifestyle and cultural shifts.
Navigating the Low Birth Rate Crisis
The low birth rate crisis prompts a reimagining of social and housing solutions, underscoring integrated dating and co-living spaces to encourage family formation.
Reality Shows: Catalysts for Romance in Modern Asia
“Terrace House” illustrates contemporary Asian dating, highlighting reality TV’s role in evolving courtship norms. These shows spotlight co-living’s potential to spark romance, shaping our housing design strategy.
Singapore’s Pro-Marriage Housing Policy
Singapore’s “couple first” policy intertwines housing benefits with marriage, demonstrating how spatial design can drive social behaviors and support demographic goals.
The research focuses on two strategies: Singapore’s housing policy and Japan’s media narrative, to develop solutions for demographic challenges. It aims to create living spaces that promote relationships and support higher birth rates, addressing the housing needs of societies with similar demographic trends.

Re-imagining Public Restrooms: Times Square Public Toilet-scape For Inclusive Sanitation Public Restroom Accessibility: An Unseen Indicator of Social Stratification This project mainly focused on the public restroom’s function and its societal expansion. It explored the potential of billboard advertising to fund public restrooms in Times Square, thus enhancing the experience of locating and using these facilities. The goal was to transform the traditional role and function of public restrooms and cater to the needs of overlooked populations in busy areas of New York, such as delivery workers, tourists, leaflet distributors, and food cart operators. I believe that providing access to public restrooms for these individuals is our society’s responsibility.
Softwares: Rhino, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign
24
The Times Square Public Toilet-scape, intertwined with the nocturnal glow of streetlights and billboards, emerges not only as an integral visual component of the cityscape but also as a pragmatic solution to the urban challenge of public restroom scarcity. This fusion creates a functional yet aesthetically harmonious element within the city’s vibrant night-time tapestry. 25

SITE & TYPOLOGY
Times Square: The Restroom Challenge Despite Times Square’s central role as a transport hub, tourist attraction, and financial district, restroom availability is inadequate. This project addresses the imperative to enhance restroom accessibility for tourists and city-serving service workers alike.
27
Restroom Typologies: A Modular Approach This design approach introduces various typologies, integrating restroom facilities with diverse functions, water storage towers, and rest-filter modules, all harmoniously blending plumbing and aesthetics.
THE SIGHTSEEING RESTROOM: A UNIQUE BLEND OF UTILITY AND ENTERTAINMENT
Times Square, a hotspot for tourists, lacks sufficient public restrooms. This design, a landmark tower, fuses a rainwater collection system, restroom facilities, and a revolving chair ride. It not only serves as an identifiable public restroom but also transforms the entire restroom-seeking and usage experience into an unforgettable part of the journey.
28
DELIVERY-SPONSORED RESTROOM: A SAFE HARBOR FOR DELIVERERS AND STREET VENDORS
B
UP
Sponsored by delivery companies, this restroom design incorporates bike parking to cater specifically to delivery workers in the bustling heart of New York. It offers them a chance to rest assured, knowing their bicycles are secure. Simultaneously, it accommodates nearby street food vendors, providing a shared space that addresses their vital needs in the midst of their demanding routines. This initiative underscores the importance of taking care of the city’s essential workforce, one restroom at a time.
29
FAMILY OASIS: PLAYFUL RESTROOM IN TIMES SQUARE
Bridging sanitation and play, this restroom design serves as a retreat for families amidst Times Square’s commercial hustle. Offering comfort for parents and a playground for kids, it eases urban navigation strains for families.
30
RAINWATER TOWER AND PURIFICATION PONDS
The Rainwater Tower, a ubiquitous element in New York’s skyline, serves as a key component in our integrated plumbing system. Besides being a symbol of water management, it reserves rainwater for drainage. Coupled with subterranean filters in the purificatio pond, the system offers wastewater treatment while providing a peaceful respite for passersby and visitors.
