What to expect during your Laparoscopic hysterectomy? A laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure conducted to remove the uterus. A small incision is made in the abdomen through which a camera is inserted to provide the surgeon with a live feed while he performs the surgery. In the lower abdomen, a few incisions are made through which instruments are inserted to remove the uterus. Also the surgery is quicker than an open surgery and leads to lesser scarring.

Before you undergo a laparoscopic hysterectomy, it is important for you to prepare yourself for the surgery. Maintain a healthy diet consistently and get plenty of rest. It is important to try to lose weight if you are overweight. You can consult your doctor as to which types of exercise you should engage in.

Patients are advised to avoid solids and liquids from the midnight of the night before surgery. Most surgeons require their patients to come in to the hospital early in the morning. This is done because the patient will be required to undergo some tests to check the overall health. Blood and urine tests as well as a chest X-ray and an EKG can be expected. Most hysterectomies are performed when the patient has been put under general anesthesia. It means that the patient will be asleep and not feel anything during the surgery. However, in some cases women may be injected with epidural or a spinal anesthetic which numbs the lower part of the body. It will not put the patient asleep but the anesthetic prevents them from feeling anything. The laparoscopic hysterectomy usually lasts between one to three hours. But the length of the surgery depends on how big the patient’s uterus is. If the surgery is being performed to remove cancer then its duration will be longer. After the surgery has been performed you will be wheeled into a recovery room where the patient will be monitored until they awaken from the anesthesia. The nurses will also be taking the patient’s blood pressure, breathing and pulse. When the patient’s vitals have stabled, they will be taken to their hospital room. The length of a patient’s stay depends on the type of hysterectomy performed. The patient will also be encouraged to move around a little to keep your body healthy and prevent any complications. If you have any reservations about the surgery, you must contact your surgeon immediately. Find a gynecologist at Apollo Edoc. The gynecology surgeon will be able to provide you with in depth information about the entire procedure and the possible risks involved.
