Inspiration and creativity come in many packages. This Tempo we celebrate talent in all its fantastic shapes. We showcase two locally based authors, Emirati Sultan Al Darmaki and American Joseph Means who are entrenched in day jobs, and yet both have followed their hearts and their creative spirits by publishing their own books. Sultan wrote a book of witticisms presented creatively in words and graphics, and Joseph penned heart-warming books for children that he hopes to extend into multimedia. The Dream Players, the UAE's foremost talent competition comes alive in our pages this issue, with the spectacular win of teenager Mallory de Man from Holland, who competed against a super talented crop of young singers from India and Papua New Guinea. Their talent will hopefully spur them onto achievement in the manner of professional singer Dede Foxx who shares her story with our readers. Then on the design front there is CGI artist Ashraf Ghori who runs his own graphics company in UAE and is involved in creating animations for Hollywood. Tempo is proud to present the artistes in our community and to salute their creative spirit.

Rabindranath Tagore once said, “manners, not brain, count at crucial moments”. A person might have good looks or fair skin, but that person becomes attractive and beautiful only if he or she has pleasing manners and does good deeds. Though good manners start at home, there is much more need for them to be practiced in schools and public places. Recently, I saw a teenager who was so busy talking to his friend that he collided into a lady, which resulted in her slipping and falling. The most surprising thing was that the absentminded teen didn’t even turn to look at the lady, much less apologise. I believe that schools should be places that nurture virtues and good values because a student can’t navigate life without a moral compass. Not only is it important to learn these manners but also important to carry them out everyday, like respecting elders, never hurting anyone’s feelings, consoling a person, or sharing another person’s grief… Our actions and manners are important, and people around us notice. I earnestly request young people reading this article to put good manners in to practice: “Good values lead to good manners, good manners give us good friends; good friends mean a good environment and a good environment leads to a happy and peaceful life”.

POET’S UNIVERSE While strolling on Abu Dhabi Corniche on a particularly quiet day, Tempo reader Samarpan Chakraborty was inspired by the stillness and so he penned this poem.

IF I TRY, IF I STRIVE By Samarpan Chakraborty

Let the hope in my dream wallow in my strained consciousness Let a brave thought take me further There is a road if you have hope There’s always a light if you never say no There’s a sky, there’s a life If we try, if we strive We will shadow every shadow in me And not let the gloom helm my destiny That bright little star is my inspiration To reach that light is my aspiration

Once while shopping in a mall I came across a heated argument between a mother and her teenage daughter. I was helping my mother choose cosmetics when suddenly I heard the girl shout at her mother in a loud voice. I could see that the girl’s mother was embarrassed. I also noticed bystanders were staring at them. I felt very sorry for the mother. This incident was what motivated me to write this article.

Let the soul cross the body, let my passion carry its weight Let your soul rest in peace as you reach heaven’s gate There’s a sky, there’s a life If I try, if I strive If the sun saps my energy, the wind shall boost me more If the wind crushes your body, the stars will help you soar

ACT LIKE A LADY, THINK LIKE A MAN by Steve Harvey (Amistad-2009) Ladies, this one’s definitely for you! Have you wanted to connect with your significant other? Really connect? Have you ever wanted to understand men – that infuriatingly cryptic gender that just won’t fulfill your dreams like you want them to be fulfilled? If the answer is yes then Steve Harvey’s international bestseller Act like a Lady, Think like a Man is the book for you! I watched the movie before reading the book: big mistake. Never do that! I had heard so much about the book through social media and I had found it kind of insulting: women don’t understand men? Yes we do, they’re predictable! They’re pigs! Who’s this guy to tell me how I have to deal with men? My feminist side just couldn’t comprehend the buzz around Steve Harvey’s self-help/hilarious book. However, when I started college, my friend offered me this book with an air of authority: “Read this, child. You will surely need it in order to venture into the mighty jungle of relationships.” Well… let’s just say that even though my initial reaction wasn’t so pleasant Steve Harvey’s light-bulb smile reeled me right in. Harvey, with his book, is giving you the key into the hearts and minds of the male species…and ladies you do not want to miss out on that. Even though there are some parts in the book that I don’t agree with, Harvey gives a persuasive description of the intricacies of the male mind. Often hilarious, always realistic, Act like a Lady, Think like a Man is the seminal guidebook for every woman, no matter her age – whether she’s a girl who’s just suffered from a breakup or whether she’s happily married. If this book doesn’t help you in some measure at least it will make you laugh. As for you guys out there, you don’t know what we’ve just stumbled upon…beware, females of the world are now equipped to take over!

They say that the only thing constant about life is that it will always change and it is up to us to evolve and move forward while embracing the change. And the best way to do this is to be creative and innovative. Meet Michael McMillan, a business innovation guru who will speak at a seminar in Abu Dhabi in January. Tempo spoke to this self- described truth seeker about his upcoming business seminar on innovation and the secrets of creative thinking.

also benefit senior executives who are in the middle of organizational transformations, as well as change catalysts engaged in coaching and mentoring. As for highlights of the seminar, I expect to reawaken our most powerful human asset—creativity. Change is constant and it's our creative nature that has enabled us to survive, evolve, and progress all these years. Through compelling stories, examples and visuals, audience members will gain new insights on how to think ‘beyond the box’, overcome obstacles, see past perceptual blindness, turn problems into solutions, embrace purpose and passion, establish effective teamwork, be motivated to take action, and create a positive future.

> WHAT ARE YOUR PERCEPTIONS OF THE UAE AND WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO EXPERIENCE IN THIS TRIP? This is my first visit to the Middle East. As with all my travels, I hope to expand my perspective and understanding of the world, share my knowledge and insights with others and make many new friends in the process. In addition to being the UAE capital, my perception of Abu Dhabi is that of a vibrant contemporary city with cultural diversity. What I find most exciting is the region's interest in innovation, development, and the future.

> INTRODUCE MICHAEL TO THE UAE Shortly after earning a degree in Visual Communications from Northern Illinois University, I founded my own firm. We focused mostly on corporate identity, branding and imaging. We were fortunate to have diverse clients ranging from Fortune 500 corporations like Dow Chemical, John Deere, Motorola and Siemens Medical Solutions to smaller entrepreneurial businesses, non-profit organizations and institutions. While our work has been recognized by most major design, marketing and communication organizations around the world, winning awards wasn't our focus. Our objective was to produce excellent work and exceed our clients' expectations. After 20 consecutive years of growth, I decided to sell my firm and pursue other interests. Today, my work revolves around public speaking, writing, consulting, and making short films. > WHAT CAN WE EXPECT IN YOUR JANUARY SEMINAR? This seminar is ideal for emerging leaders, high-potential managers who seek powerful and practical thinking tools that can enhance their effectiveness in leading teams. It can

> HOW HAVE YOU HELPED COMPANIES INNOVATE? Over the years I've helped many companies develop innovative solutions at many levels. Change is constant and innovation must be, too. The challenge is recognizing, building, and sustaining a culture around creativity and innovation. Per your question, my experience with Michael Jordan comes to mind. We created a book together entitled ‘Rare Air’. I presented the concept to every major publisher in New York City only to be rejected. Why? Because it didn't fit an existing publishing category. Many new ideas don't fit existing categories. So we created a new category called a ‘pictorial autobiography’ and then convinced a California publisher to take a chance. Not only did ‘Rare Air’ become a New York Times best-seller, it also established a new retail publishing niche. Innovative solutions vary in size and impact. > WHAT, IN YOUR VIEW, ARE THE SECRETS OF CREATIVE THINKING AND INNOVATION? I have spent much time studying and pondering this question. To be human, I believe, is to be creative. Without creativity, life stagnates and innovation doesn't happen. Creativity has been and remains our most powerful asset. Creativity comes to us naturally when we're children. But over the years, we stop embracing this gift.

You can live each day in a world filled with 'problems,' or rise each morning and embrace a world filled with unseen solutions… eager for you to find them. The decision is yours… both worlds exist. The one you choose is the one you will create." We substitute knowledge and perception for imagination and possibilities. While knowledge is important, it's also limited and stagnant. Creativity is limitless and dynamic. Again, it can make the impossible possible. By acknowledging our perceptual blindness, moving beyond our biases, and having the courage to take action on new possibilities, we can expand reality. Even when we fail, we make new connections and discover possibilities. Throughout my seminar, I will be sharing insights, answers, and actionable items to this most important question.

MICHAEL McMILLAN BOOK YOUR SEAT NOW! January 7, 2013, Abu Dhabi To find out more about the programme or to register for Michael McMillan’s seminar visit www.theexcellenceseries.com or call 02-4918625. Rates are Dh 985 per person. Group and university student discounts apply.

SHEESH! SHAWARMA! By Saniya Ali

Shawarma is a staple in this part of the world. It’s the fast food of the Arabia; it’s delicious and quite easy to make. And yet there are eateries that still get this road side delicacy very wrong. Tempo’s resident foodie Saniya Ali, went around the city of Abu Dhabi with her food loving side-kick, Mashal Abbasi, to review some of the shawarma joints around town... WHERE: AL FAROOJ FRESH WHAT: Mexican shawarma BUILD: chicken, pickles, Mexican sauce, traditional Lebanese bread, French fries COMMENT: A totally underrated fast food chain in UAE, Farooj has definitely left a lasting impression on my taste buds. Shawarmas aren’t the only thing on their menu, they also have a sumptuous variety of fried chicken, rice, salads and, who can forget, their superb ‘Tornado Fries’. Not only do they use fresh Al-Islami chicken, but it has got to be the juiciest shawarma I’ve ever had. The tangy Mexican sauce in their shawarmas is like no other I’ve ever tasted. Farooj’s Mexican shawarma provides a unique taste that is just irresistible. RECOMMENDATION: Perfect texture, perfect combination and just the right amount of sauce. RATING:

WHERE: AUTOMATIC RESTAURANT AL MARKAZIYA WHAT: Chicken Shawarma BUILD: Chicken, traditional Lebanese bread, French fries, Pickles, Garlic sauce. COMMENT: One of the oldest Lebanese restaurants in Abu Dhabi, Automatic restaurant’s shawarma’s are something everyone living in this city has tried. With their authentic Lebanese cuisine and excellent service, I always want to come back for more! However in the past few years, their prices have risen and their portions have gotten smaller. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the excellent flavor they have managed to maintain over the years and years of shawarma making. The crunchy pickle and juicy chicken make a deadly combo with the amazing garlic sauce. RECOMMENDATION: One of my personal favorites! Wouldn’t change a thing…except the size. RATING:

WHERE: SHEESH SHAWARMA KHALIDIYAH ABU DHABI WHAT: Chicken Shawarma BUILD: Traditional Lebanese bread, chicken, French fries, various sauces and salad items COMMENT: While relatively new to the shawarma scene in Abu Dhabi, Sheesh Shawarma does not disappoint. The place offers a welcoming relief from the monotony of regular shawarmas. With a wide variety of fillings, I felt spoilt for choice at this small outlet in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s Khalidiyah area. I ordered a chicken shawarma and ate it so fast I must have breathed it in! Each mouthful feels like a taste of heaven and the softness of the bread along with the large portion made it hard to resist. No wonder Sheesh Shawarma is quickly becoming one of the most popular shawarma stops in Abu Dhabi. RECOMMENDATION: If you’re looking to try a new take on the traditional shawarma, Sheesh Shawarma is definitely a brilliant option to try. RATING:

10 | www.tempoplanet.com

WHERE: LEBANESE FLOWER WHAT: Mutton shawarma BUILD: mutton, yoghurt sauce, assorted salad COMMENT: Lebanese flower is a restaurant that has been around for quite some time. With their in house dining and shisha, Lebanese flower is a popular dining spot in Abu Dhabi. They were once known to make the best shawarmas in the city but I’m sad to say that’s no longer true. Over the years their service has declined, shawarmas have become smaller and they haven’t been able to maintain their once excellent flavor. The mutton shawarma wasn’t a complete disappointment, the meat was good but I felt the bread wasn’t as soft as it should have been. RECOMMENDATION: Used to be a fantastic place, I just hope they get their groove back on. RATING:

H.E. Grace Relucio Princesa (Philippine Ambassador to the UAE) is getting her book signed by the author Sultan Saeed Al Darmaki

H.H. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mabarak browses “Leave the Birds Alone” while Sultan Saeed Al Darmaki explains his inspiration

QUICK QUESTIONS: If you were stuck on a deserted island and only had an unlimited supply of one thing to eat, what would it be? Snickers

SULTAN SAEED AL DARMAKI: LEAVE THE BIRDS ALONE By Sharon Carvalho

Sultan Saeed Al Darmaki isn’t your typical Emirati man. In fact, there’s nothing typical about him at all; whether it is his zest for life, his taste in music or his opinions on just about anything.

Sultan has just launched his latest book called ‘Leave the Birds Alone’. Strange name don’t you think? Not when you listen to his explanation. “The name originated from two thoughts. The first was when I was playing World of Warcraft with two friends at a friend’s house. We came to a point in a dungeon where one of them was about to attack the birds but I knew that if he did that, we would be swarmed by monsters. As I yelled at him to leave the birds alone, the other friend of mine started singing the words ‘leave the birds alone’ to the tune of Michael Jackson’s ‘You are not alone’. That instance stuck with me. The second thought was my perspective on life. I like looking at the bigger picture so, to me, life is like the sky and the birds flying in the sky are the minor things that distract us from the picture… so leave the birds alone is what I say!”

Sultan says he drew his inspiration from the world around him…

>

HIS PARENTS “My dad was a person who had a zest for life, who was forward thinking and had gone from growing up in a small desert to travelling all over the world. He was a well spoken of gentleman and was always looking to make new friends. My 12 | www.tempoplanet.com

mother is strong and elegant, and was always calm and collected. She even looked after the family business until I was old enough to take over. My mother is my ultimate role model”.

>

SHEIKH ZAYED BIN SULTAN AL NAHYAN “He was the most open minded, forward thinking man of his time. Accepting change and globalization would not have been easy for a man who grew up in his corner of the desert, but he was always thinking 200 years ahead of his time. And in the end, all he wanted was for a smart thinking population of leaders. Through taking this book global I hope to change the image the world has of Emiratis.

>

HIS TRAVELS “I have been all over the world and everywhere I go I try to find a coffee shop that is close to the heart of the city. I sit there with my notebook and pen and just watch people. I watch how they interact, how they move and the various things that happen in the city. Usually a random thought in my head merges with something I’m looking at and I find something to write about. That way I think I bring together an element of culture, an element of my childhood and an element of imagination. I’m particularly

inspired by Amsterdam and London cabbies. The former because there are over 100 nationalities living there peacefully, and the latter because of the wealth of information they carry with them.

LIFE “Life is beautifully complex and chaotic. It’s a puzzle and we all have to accept that there isn’t an answer but it’s how hard you strive to solve it that makes it interesting. I find peace in chaos and that’s why I love to sit and watch people and the things happening around me.

QUICK QUOTES: “I’d like to think that I inspire people to take what I write and express what they think about it. Like giving their brain a cup of coffee.” “An abstract name will mean different things to different people. People get caught up in it and it makes them think.” “I never put numbers to creativity. I leave numbers for business. Creativity has to flow. It has to have no formation and must be fluid.” “I write to capture the moment. I write to remove old thoughts and let new ones in.” “I believe that when we dream about weird stuff, it’s our subconscious telling us to go out and do something creative.”

Who would you least like to be stuck with in a lift? A person with a BlackBerry! Who would you most like to be stuck with in a lift? A clone of me! If you could jump from the edge of space (like Felix Baumgartner) would you? Well, me being me, I’d do the jump but find a way to do it in a kandoora. (I’d like to land head first into a giant pool of coffee, drink it all up and shoot back into space) If you could be anything that could be swallowed, what would it be? I’d be a rock because I’m very hard to swallow. Hehe!

XBOX LIVE MIDDLE EAST It was quiet. It was later than expected. But it happened! XBox Live Middle East has finally arrived! Launched in October actually. But is that a good thing? Well, maybe not. If you sign in to the ME service, you don’t carry all your saved game data with you. You’ll essentially have to start all over again and you won’t have all the add-ons like Zune, for example. But I’m sure the necessary partnerships will be acquired…For example, XBox would have to find a music and cable partner here in the Middle East in order to offer similar apps to what you may get through your UK/Europe XBox Live account. But all in time, kids, all in time. Indeed there could be a conflict very much like the iTunes Store paradox many face - two separate accounts and never the twain meeting. So far I recommend sticking with your old account. There could also be issues with release dates, licensing content and censorship - we may simply not get certain kinds of DLC. Then, who knows, we could be forced to open an XBox Live ME account and close the other. Eeep! Early days yet, so let’s see where this goes. SMARTGLASS IS AS SMART AS... Yes, Xbox is really going for it and released their Smartglass app which gives you constant Xbox Live connectivity on all your devices. So, I can waft around the Live universe on my iPad, for example. Now we could pretty much do that through our browsers and the Xbox app, but now it’s a more complete experience that totally mirrors that of your Live interface, and essentially acts like a remote control - which we kinda already have, but hey, why not? Just make sure the app on your Xbox and your mobile device is activated. HITMAN VS DISHONOURED And yes, I got Hitman: Absolution, and it rocks! I recommend you play Dishonoured then do Hitman. The former prepares you for an even fuller experience in the latter - though Dishonoured does some things better, so far. Hitman has a sense of realism as you make your way through crowded streets - really crowded streets - avoid cops, look for alternate methods of entry, assassination and escape and compare your scores to the global average. There will be times when you feel great and woefully idiotic. Both games will be great gifts for the gamer in your life. Especially if that gamer is you.

APPLE iPAD MINI Since the existence of original iPad, the iPad mini has been in the rumour mill (some based on hopes and others based on fact). But yet again Apple has done what we never thought it could; it brought out a smaller, more portable tablet with the same feel of the original iPad. The iPad mini is 7.9 inches 1024 x 768 IPS display; similar resolution as the iPad 2 only the screen size is smaller. This thinner (7.2 mm) and lighter (308 g) device has a dual core 1GHz CPU with 512 Mb RAM, 1.2 Mega-Pixel Front and 5 Mega-Pixel rare camera with 720p and 1080p HD video recording, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, Bluetooth 4.0, assisted GPS and GLONASS and 4G LTE for 4G Model. The battery gives up to 10 hours of life while surfing the web over Wi-Fi and watching videos or listening to music. If you are looking for the full iPad experience in a smaller size, the iPad mini is for you. Even though now, there are a growing number of alternates available in the market. GOOGLE NEXUS 10 In my view Google Nexus 10 is the best designed tablet so far. It has more memory, higher resolution and the latest android 4.2. The Google/Samsung co-production measures 10.1 inches, is 0.89 cm thick and weighs only 603 g. Nexus 10 is powered by 1.7Ghz Dual-core Samsung Exynos 5 processor with 2 GB RAM and has a 2500 x 1600 screen resolution. It also supports Wi-Fi b/g/n (2.4GHz and 5GHz), Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and NFC. It also has a gyroscope, barometer, accelerometer and a digital compass and a whole bunch of other cool features. It’s a pretty cool device with the best hardware so far and yes, the round corners make it feel better to hold.

Writing and painting in surrealism are two fields that show me the extent of possibility. They are places that allow my imagination to run wild. I write because I find myself enjoying creating stories, with characters, lives and actions. Writing lets it all be within reach. I just relax and it comes out: a short story, a paragraph, an article, just like the feeling I imagine you’d get in painting a surrealistic work.

Abu Dhabi International Motor Show @ ADNEC 19-23

16 | www.tempoplanet.com

In art it is Salvador Dali that is one of the most prominent champions of surrealism. His work has inspired the minds and hearts of many. On the literary front Franz Kafka is one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.

29

So navigate the world painlessly by reducing your IQ today.

The movement of Surrealism surged through this world in the 1920s, bringing the creative genius of many in the pursuit of chance effects and unexpected juxtapositions. The movement embraces both art and literature; delving through trance and logic and the way of unwrapping deeper levels of meaning and associations.

28

And don’t believe for one second that they don’t affect your daily life. Whenever you see a good programme taken off the air they are there! Whenever you hear a racial comment they are there! Whenever your papers don’t get processed because of an unimportant stupid rule THEY ARE THERE!

27

For some weird reason everyone respects intelligent people and makes fun of the stupid. Sure, I guess brains have some use like for inventing silly things that don’t matter… like penicillin, robotics or figuring out how the earth revolves around the sun; but it’s the stupid ones that do all the real work in this world. They’re the ones that make rules that no one understands, and they’re the ones that that support wars and follow nonsensical movements.

26

After all, do you think it’s easy not listening to common sense? Do you honestly think for one second that hating people of a different race, creed or orientation is simple? Take our spokesperson, (enter morons name here)… it’s not easy getting up in the morning and planning how you’re going to make life difficult for someone who believes in silly things like science, a different religion, or common sense.

Dreams and fantasy exist in ideas and fiction. All burst through our brain and our consciousness. We sometimes see ourselves doing the impossible. It relaxes us. Knowing that we are not fully stuck in this world where many things are further than arms reach to grasp frees us, and shows us what is possible in a world of surrealism and wonder.

Global Village @ Dubai till 30 March

Al Dhafra Camel Festival 17-28

25

A great and stupid man once said ‘Intelligence comes easy, being stupid is hard’. People look at stupid people with their blank stares and use of language, and think ‘what’s so hard in that?’ But no one understands the hard work and long grunt hours that it takes to be an asinine, bigoted, mind numbing moron.

Zeeshan Razzaqi

24

Brief moments of escape are gold and every human of every gender and race searches for it as something he or she strives to own. The way to refuge though different for many in the end remains the same in destination. Whether it is in moments of joy or sorrow, we all seek it, though some of us amble towards it while others sprint to it. Usually there is one place specifically that one must choose. It lies within the embrace of possibility, even though it is in the realms of surrealism.

During the early 90’s Ashraf was involved in comic book illustration and fantasy art, heavily influenced by the work of some great artists like Simon Bisley, Frank Frazetta, Barry Windsor-Smith and James Jean. Then games like 'Mechwarrior 2' came on to the scene and motivated him to try his hand at 3D animation. Even today, he continues to draw inspiration from comic books, sci-fi and fantasy art, movies and games. “I've always been extremely inspired by the old Marvel and DC comics. The colourful characters jump out at me and have compelled me to create my own. The original Tron is another early inspiration and perhaps the reason I got into 3D,” says Ashraf. > THE PROJECTS “What I do can probably be divided into two halves: the artist and the entrepreneur” says Ashraf. As business owner he is used to long working hours at runs his Xpanse CGI so long working hours are quite common for him. Xpanse handles design projects related to websites, animation, TV commercials and film. “I am involved in both the creative side as well as managing the administrative activities of Xpanse. In fact you would find me frequenting cafes in Dubai for my meetings.” As artist, Ashraf implements some of the projects at Xpanse. Among them is FOBcity, an irreverent web comic series that depicts the shenanigans of a group of expat friends living in an Arab country.

DIGITAL BRUSH: ART

CGI MAGICIAN ASHRAF GHORI

By Sanah Chauhan

Only the sky is the limit for 39-year-old Ashraf Ghori! Artist, animation director and CEO of Xpanse CGI in Dubai, Ashraf is originally from India but has lived in Dubai for most of his life. 20 | www.tempoplanet.com

After getting his graphic design degree from Houston, Texas, Ashraf honed his craft through his work in 3D animation in the USA and the UAE. While in the USA, Ashraf created comic books and worked as a caricature artist for Six Flags Astroworld in Houston. In the UAE Ashraf worked as illustrator for ‘Young Times’ for about 10 years and later designed laser shows for events in the UAE. Ashraf’s digital artwork appeared in publications in the Middle East, the USA and India, and his first short film 'Xero Error' is the UAE’s first CGI sci-fi film. Equipped with all that knowledge, Ashraf decided in 2007 to set up his digital design studio, Xpanse CGI in Dubai.

> THE CREATIVE PROCESS When asked about the process of creating new characters, Ashraf replies, “Every character begins its life cycle on paper. I either write out a character bio or start sketching out my ideas.” An example of his work is FOBcity characters who were first conceived in a script, and then developed extensively as the storyline developed. Ashraf says he chose their looks to match their personalities. “I’m sure they will develop further as they are realized into 3D characters as well.” > NEW VENTURES Besides FOBcity, Ashraf has worked on other projects that include two short films and two

graphic novels. “Tempus” is an experimental short film, and is his second role as director. The film incorporates live action and computer generated imagery. Currently in production, it is slated for release in April at Gulf Film Festival 2013. “The Shortcut” is another short animation, which is in pre –production stage. It is aimed for release later next year, possibly at Dubai International Film Festival 2013. “Antar” and “Shakspur” are the two graphic novels Ashraf is currently working on. Antar features the story of the warrior and poet from ancient Arabia, while Shakspur was co-written with George Hopkins. It may seem like Ashraf already has a lot on his plate but he doesn’t

seem to think so. “I also want to work on a children’s story book for which I am open to collaboration,” he says.

Ashraf’s advice to aspiring graphic artists and animators is, “Hard work pays off! There are no shortcuts to it. You have to pay your dues if you’re in the demanding business of creativity. A designer or animator is only as good as his or her portfolio. It is challenging to deliver great stuff all the time and meet client expectations, but keep at it and practice often to learn and improve.” www.tempoplanet.com | 21

CLEAN UP UAE

ASSESSING EMISSIONS IN THE UK

Many companies take stock at the end of the year to check profits, gains and losses and achievements throughout the year. The year 2012 has seen developments towards a more sustainable world but there is still much to be done. With the Doha Climate Negotiations having concluded recently we hope that some significant progress has been made so that 2013 can be a year to build even further on the developments at governmental, corporate and local levels. The World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, which runs from 13 – 17 January, as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, is the ideal place to find out more about what is being done on all levels to increase global sustainability.

The December 12 will see over 22,000 people across the country engaged in the ‘Clean Up the UAE’ bid to raise awareness of the effect that litter has on our fragile environment. Each year the Emirates Environmental Group visits more sites and more volunteers join the cause to help reduce the amount of litter left around the UAE. It is amazing how much rubbish is found in the sand in the desert, and how wantonly it is thrown out of cars and left at the side of the road. It affects wildlife not just on land but in the sea as well with turtles and camels both suffering from the affects of eating plastic bags that they mistake for food.

Have you ever wanted to be Prime Minister or leader of your country? Have you thought of how your decisions as a leader could affect the emissions and climate policy of your country? UK newspaper, The Guardian, has developed a tool where you can put yourself in David Cameron’s shoes (current UK Prime Minister) and see how changing the emissions of major industries and consumer emissions can effect total UK emissions and energy demand. Find it here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/ environment/interactive/2010/apr/21/ national- carbon-calculator

Welcome back, to the old school crowd and for the new crew (if anyone actually reads these). Welcome to my vault, filled with tales of intrigue and human “awesomeness” that defy logic and common sense. Tales of everyday ‘heroes’ – right here in our city. “CRYING WOLF”- A young female came to us in a coma. The ambulance crew had no useful information about her. Typical start. The RNs (nurses) and I furiously began examining her from head to toe but were completely stumped. There were no obvious injuries, no evidence of intoxication, no pain response, but just very shallow breathing. Due to her poor effort at breathing, we prepared her for mechanical breathing. While doing this, with meds in hand, I noticed some strange eye flickering, which seemed ‘weird’. Something seemed off. I asked my team for a long ‘Q-tip’. With that in hand, I carefully inserted it into her nose to lightly bump a very sensitive area. BOO YAA! Like a miracle, she opened her eyes, sat up immediately and let fly a howling “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?” She screamed, to which we reply, “What are YOU doing?!” No explanations were given for her behavior. Her own little secret. But another ‘life’ saved. “KARMA”- A labourer came after an accident (again, flooded by information from the medics). There was a gaping wound in his head, leg and arm injuries, and he was sleepy and not talking sense. Again, we attended to his immediate needs. Once stabilized, some of his coworkers showed up. They then told me his story. This poor guy initially slammed head first into a steel beam (that’s bad) but that isn’t where his misery ends; he happened to be standing beside a stairwell so the slam caused him to get knocked over the railing which resulted in him falling down two flights of stairs. That explained the arm and leg injuries and his broken neck. Come on now! Not one bad accident, but two for the price of one!! What had this poor guy done to deserve this? Was he Hitler or Attila the Hun in a past life?? We’re done, but don’t despair; there are more heroes out there and we’ll hear from them later. But take heed to my warning- no need for heroics, unless you don’t mind Abu Dhabi reading about you.

When we were infants I crawled on the other side of the world. My mother assumed I was inching to her. I was beckoned by the clicking of your tongue against the roof of your toothless mouth when words were mountains my weak limbs could not scale. Unable to get to you yet, I gave up and tumbled, humbled on my back. Life lashed us with its cat o’ nine tails. On my tenth life, I have already lived the nine of cats’ tales. We both lost so much before we met so it is no coincidence that we discovered us and hoarded each other. We whirl together unresistingly because this world will continue to knock us on our backs. In expansive fields we stare down stars like stairs to see if we or the cosmos blink first I think I saw a twinkle which means we won. You and I and the fields are one while we disappear in each other on our backs. After climaxes we both day dream the infinite denouements. No clothing but fully shrouded in the warmth that lover’s harness. Come start a campfire with me at the foot of the bed. If we can only build the energy to stand since we are cemented on our backs. In elder years, lay beside me on my death bed. Share my last breath. When it is our time lay us side by side six feet under the earth’s epidermis dearly departed to start anew, we will return where we started on our backs. www.tempoplanet.com | 23

THE DREAM PLAYERS “I HAVE A DREAM” By Sharon Carvalho

competition for a while. It’s an experience that has helped me see what it's like in the competing world of performing arts. The whole event was very nerve racking because I’m not very good with competitions. The night before the event we had a sound check so I got a look at my competitors and it scared me to death. The competition was so strong and could all sing so beautifully. I was so nervous for my first song, I was standing on stage shaking and nearly dropped the microphone but for my second song I felt a lot more confident as I knew it was my stronger performance. I sang 'Funny Honey' from Chicago which is the play we're doing at the moment in the drama department at Al Yasmina and I am completely in love with it and have been singing it for months. When they got us all on stage to call out the names of the winner I definitely didn't think I had won so it was such a surprise when they called out my name. I’m so happy with my prizes and my first ever trophy! It was great taking part in the Dream Players and for anyone who has a talent and would like to show it off I advise you to sign up, you never know, maybe you'll be the next Dream Player ;)

The contestants (L-R) Rifah Salman, Shanthi Tikari, Lola Donohoe, Mallory de Man, Kritika Kadekodi, Janice Priyanka

The Dream Players, the UAE’s foremost community talent show provided a creative platform for six exciting young female singers who fought it out for the crown of Dream Player. The competition held in November at Al Wahda Mall before a 1,000 strong audience, ended with Mallory de Man, from Holland, claiming the title after giving two beautiful singing performances that blew the competition out of the water. Tempo was there to cover the popular event that unveils fresh talent from around town. 24 | www.tempoplanet.com

THE DREAM PLAYERS EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, SANA BAGERSH: "This was one of the most fiercely contested competitions we ever staged. We all welcomed the level of talent and the considerable level of commitment and energy that each contestant displayed. We’re finding that The Dream Players is attracting gifted singers and talented performers from all over the nation, and we hope that the experience of the participants on this platform will help shape them professionally.”

The judges (L-R) Henry Bennett, Nicola Warwick and Terry Borden

The boy's choir from British School Al Khubairat

THE WINNER Mallory de Man, a 16 year old student from the Al Yasmina School in Abu Dhabi, had the judges and the audience enthralled with her powerful voice. For round one she moved the listeners with her heart-wrenching rendition of Christina Perri’s ‘Jar of Hearts’ and then mixed it up with a snappy, attitude filled performance of ‘Funny Honey’ from Chicago. Mallory clinched the title of November’s “Dream Player”.

MALLORY’S REACTION UPON WINNING Performing as part of The Dream Players is definitely an experience I'll never forget. The judges feedback was great and I'll definitely think about what they said next time I perform. I think the comment I was the happiest with was 'we'll see you on Broadway someday.' My insides did a little turn and jump as my dream has always been to perform on Broadway. The whole event was great as it's the only of its kind and I've been looking to take part in a talent singing

Second runner up, Rifah Salman

KRITIKA KADEKODI, A CONTESTANT: The night was a memorable one. It was an extremely well organized event; everyone from the organizers to the judges was very professional. The judges in particular were tremendously helpful and encouraging. My fellow contestants were very friendly and we all got along smoothly. I truly hope more events like this are organized as the city needs such platforms to break from routine business and showcase our many talents.

BURNING PASSION TO SUCCEED: STOKING THE ENTREPRENEURIAL FIRE

ARAB AND AMERICAN SCHOLARS DEBATE: SOCIAL MEDIA AFTER THE ARAB SPRING Dr. Alma Kadragic, University Media Studies Professor and Author

I’m writing this column from Atlanta, Georgia, at the end of the Arab-US Association of Communication Educators (AUSACE) annual conference.

Already in 2011 social media was probably the dominant topic for research and discussion. This time there was no doubt. Social media was covered in almost every session where participants presented papers. It also stirred the most discussion, even heated discussion.

AUSACE had been scheduled for Abu Dhabi but moved to the Peachtree State in September due to organizational problems. The 45 or so scholars who attended the three-day event at Georgia State University were evenly divided between those who work in the US and those who work in the Arab world.

I’ve mentioned before in this column that I see the Arab Spring against the background of the East European revolutions of 1989 when I was ABC News bureau chief in Warsaw, Poland, and covered events in the region for American television.

Both groups include Arabs and Americans who have done research on the Middle East but have no prior cultural connection. In the US group are Arabs who have studied at major universities around the country and now teach journalism, media, PR, and other communications disciplines there including Georgia State (GSU). Seventeen years ago, some Arab and American scholars founded AUSACE at GSU to create dialogue between Arabs and Americans and to study communications issues that affect everyone. Annually AUSACE holds a conference usually in the Middle East, occasionally in the US. This is my third AUSACE conference. I was involved in hosting the 2007 conference at Zayed University in Dubai. Last year I attended the conference at the American University of Beirut. 26 | www.tempoplanet.com

Then no one had cell phones; the Internet was not a factor. Mark Zuckerberg hadn’t yet invented an algorithm to classify the girls at Harvard. How did the demonstrations of 1989 begin? News spread by word of mouth, telephone, posters, and in meetings of dissidents opposed to the government. Major changes throughout history happened without social media. At AUSACE this weekend we argued about the importance of social media in toppling autocratic regimes in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya and its influence in Syria and other current hotspots. Opinions varied but when it came to forecasting where social media is going, I saw a split between the Americans and the Arabs regardless of where they are teaching today. The Arab educators were very concerned about what they called behavior on Twitter and Facebook. One professor from the Gulf

complained that students use Facebook for silly things like reporting what they ate for breakfast and sending love poetry. Others who teach in the US worried about the lack of control over Twitter. No one prevents users from tweeting insulting or inappropriate messages, and they found many of them in social media and said there should be some kind of legal regime to control social media. The Americans generally didn’t agree and argued that the freedom of expression possible on Facebook and Twitter is important although it can sometimes be abused. But one solution to abuse lies in negative reactions from those who like or follow that person in social media, in other words, letting social media regulate itself. Regulation by journalist associations, national governments, or international organizations isn’t the only possibility. After the 1989 revolutions, many local and foreign journalists were disappointed to find that the dissidents who had fought against the controlled press of their country’s Communist government didn’t turn out to be whole hearted supporters of press freedom. They claimed to want a free press and once in power did allow independent media ownership. However, they remained concerned about potential abuses by journalists and focused on making sure the press could be punished for going too far.

I have recently been guiding a young entrepreneur, and it got me thinking about the qualities needed to become successful in a start-up business. The first is undoubtedly passion. Passion is everything. Even during the darkest days, when the world seems against them, the most successful entrepreneurs cling to their passion like a drowning person clutches a life buoy. It is their passion that gets them out of bed every morning to face a new challenge when it would be just as easy to roll over and go back to sleep. It is passion that allows them to accept the tsunami of knockbacks and push against the tide of despair. It is passion that keeps their eyes burning bright when all they want to do is close them and shut out the world. Passion does not come on a shelf. It is not sold in a cardboard box at the local supermarket or bought over the Internet. It cannot be injected into you like Botox. Passion comes from within. It is not forced, it naturally erupts like a geyser from inside. Then there are other essential qualities such as enthusiasm, belief and determination. Enthusiasm is rooted in belief; if you truly believe in what you are doing – I mean, deepdown-in-your-heart believe – then words of advocacy or defence flow out like a waterfall. You can ignore the yawns, the rolling of eyes, the sideways glances looking for an escape – this is your passion, you believe in it, and you canenthuse about it for as long as anyone will listen. And as for determination – well, your passion and belief will lift you up when you are knocked down, when you are crawling on your hands and knees, when it hurts so much that you could easily give it away. This is what separates

elite athletes from very good ones; they push harder and harder even when the pain becomes unbearable. They will do whatever they have to do to achieve the ultimate success. This is what it means to be an entrepreneur – a true entrepreneur. So do you have these qualities? Will you keep going when the going gets tough? Do you believe in your idea enough to walk over hot coals for it? Do you love it almost as much as your family? If it is just about making money, then perhaps you need to have that tough-love conversation in the mirror, when you ask yourself that brutal question,“am I really cut out to be an entrepreneur”? Is it is easier to take a good salary and do a good job for someone else? Only you can answer this. Nobody else.

The reply will be deep in your soul. If ‘yes’ comes out quickly, then you are an entrepreneur. If ‘no’is uttered just as fast, then you are not, and there is no shame in this. Not everyone is suited to entrepreneurship. And if you have to think too hard about it, then you are probably not, because there is obviously some doubt…and ‘doubt’ really spells trouble. Big trouble. The person I am helping has these positive qualities in spades. The passion flares in her eyes, the determination drives her through rough days, she can persuasively talk about her product, and she truly believes she will be successful. Do I believe in her product? I am not sure yet. Do I believe in her? Absolutely! And that’s good enough for me.

MYSTERIOUS DD CHASES GLOBAL MUSIC SUCCESS

There is something Lady Gaga-esque about DD Foxx, the UAE’s supertalented songstress. Is it the mystique behind the carefully-crafted image, the clever song writing abilities, or the sheer determination to succeed? Ian Mason had a chat to find out for Tempo readers what keeps Miss DD going.

Whatever it is, 26-year-old DD is on the pathway to success with the release of her latest album DD Foxx: Had To Be Me in September through the Virgin label. The current single from it is Raise The Roof. “Raise The Roof is about a vision that I repeatedly saw in my dreams,” explains DD. “The vision relates to me being backstage, getting ready and hearing the crowd call my name. Coming out on stage and I see strong bright lights. I'm singing and crowd starts singing with me. It’s a fun party dance track”. This pretty much describes DD’s music. She says her ‘competitors’ are Katy Perry and Rihanna, although it’s unfair to compare her unique genre of music. “I would describe my style as a blend of pop, dance and R&B. A mix of old school and new with a Middle Eastern touch,” says DD. DD writes her own material in collaboration with her producer, Kevin Bassett from New York. “Music to me is a story of life, experiences, understanding people and how different characters express themselves. In fact, everything in life inspires me - people, places, characters, personalities and experiences”. “All artists and all types of music influence me in different ways. I listen to everything. But two artists who influence me the most are Ray Charles and Mary J Blige”. Music is DD’s full-time career. “It is my passion 28 | www.tempoplanet.com

and my life. I used to work in the PR field for a water treatment and desalination company. It was quite an interesting job. I used to go to studio after work and spent late night hours recording. But over time, this exercise became very draining so I had to make a decision about what was important to me - my current job or my music career. I had to sacrifice my job to pursue my dream”. Despite her segue into music, DD is not lost to the PR field. Shedding her alter ego, she can be seen emceeing at shows around Dubai, including the GITEX Technology Week. It is only her hardcore fans that would recognize the smart, intelligent professional on stage as the mysterious, exotic and beautiful DD Foxx. Born in Riyadh, DD lived in Saudi Arabia for 13 years before moving to Dubai. She wants to stay true to her cultural roots whilst launching herself on the global scene.

“There is a lot of talent here. We need venues where all musicians can have the opportunity to get together and jam. Personally, it gets a bit frustrating when I can't hear my music being played on the radio because I know my music is as good as anybody else's out there”. “As a musician in Dubai, you need that support and that extra push from the music industry in Dubai to help take you to the next level. That said, I believe that input equals output and I try to surround myself with the best people to motivate me to work harder and stay focused”. Finally, the obvious question. Why ‘DD Foxx’? “DD comes from the cartoon character from Dexter's Laboratory. I was obsessed with that cartoon and Dexter's sister. I looked like her when I was young with my skinny legs,” she says with a laugh, “so my parents called me DD. And Foxx describes my character - unpredictable and mysterious".

“My ambition is to be the first Middle Eastern Arab artist to cross over and become an international artist”. “I went to New York in September where I had a couple of meetings with big labels in the music industry. It was great! I am travelling to the US this month to shoot two music videos - so things are really moving along now”. DD describes the music scene in Dubai as “good, but not loud.”

The new album DD Foxx: Had To Be Me is available at all Virgin Megastores in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Jeddah, and Rotana in Riyadh. Visit www.ddfoxx.com to find out more about DD Foxx.

Aries: Stick to your guns if you believe in a cause and don’t let yourself be swayed with what some people consider “practical considerations.” In business deals, be cautious about signing your name or giving someone the go-ahead until you know all the facts. Romantic attraction to a desirable Leo could prove very exciting and it could involve a very long-term relationship. Taurus: A long vacation trip, possibly involving water, could be on the horizon for you. Take people at their word, but then make sure that they live up to it. Office procedures could be improved by some of your ideas if you will make the move to get them started. Look for correspondence or other messages from a long-time sweetheart, but be cautious in reacting to what seems like a sure thing. Gemini: Steer away from romantic involvement with a Gemini. They can often be good friends, but seldom make happy lovers. Exercise your right to speak your piece, particularly in a family or close business relationship. Avoid the error of trying to live someone else’s life for him. An excellent chance for you to shine brightly in your community could be offered to you. Cancer: Maintain your self-respect by refusing to accept unearned money, even when someone attempts to thrust it on you. Home life could be more pleasant if you get rid of the idea that you are the boss. Learn to share responsibility with others and you may find the load is much lighter. Expect others, however, to do their share and then give them the freedom to do so. Leo: In planning a quiet weekend with your loved-one, make sure that at least one person knows where to reach you in case of emergencies. Job opportunities could abound for you now, but you might be wiser to stay with the one you have, as unexpected promotions could be already in the mill. Try to keep your social life to a minimum for awhile and get some needed rest. Virgo: Get up off your duff and quit wasting time. Your ability to turn out firstrate creative work has never been sharper, but you may not realize it because of sloppy work habits and an ingrained laziness. In romantic situations involving a married person, you would be wise to walk lightly and avoid becoming deeply involved. A close friend may call on you for help. Libra: Let yourself go wild for a day or two. Indulge a few whims and spend some of your mad money. But don’t let it become a habit. You need a fling now and then, but you should strive to buckle down hard in between them. A good chance at a promotion or new job could be lost if you appear to be too much of a gadabout. Romance may be a little less exciting for a time. Scorpio: Give serious thought to changing your lifestyle to make room for a loving and gentle Leo. Should you decide to do this, plan on a lengthy relationship, as this could be a very serious affair. In business, you could make a killing if you will just use your intelligence and make use of the knowledge that is common to all. Avoid self-indulgence and overdoing things in general for your health’s sake. Sagittarius: When collecting an old debt, it might be wise for you to make sure you pay one at the same time. Offer a young person the chance to benefit from your experience, but don’t be put out if they refuse it. A new love or the renewal of an old one could make your life brighter for awhile — but don’t depend on it lasting forever. Capricorn: Good times are in store for you, both at the office and in your romantic life. Keep a smile on your face and avoid being cross or testy for no particular reason. In dealing with colleagues on a touchy situation, allow others to contribute, but try to keep your own hand in, as your experience may be needed. Check on a health problem without delay. Aquarius: Accept what can’t be avoided, but try to do it with a smile instead of a frown. Compromise is not always a dirty word and you might profit by adding it to your vocabulary. Physical exercise and improved health habits could solve a major problem for you, but don’t try diagnosing other people unless you have a physician’s license. Keep your head down and your voice low when it involves office politics. Pisces: The good deeds of a friend may prove much more helpful to you in the long run than the flattering words of one who has his own axe to grind. Operate out in the open in romantic affairs as much as possible, because there are those who would like to have information about your affairs that could benefit them at a later time. A relative may need help. TO ADVERTISE IN THE WIDEST CIRCULATED YOUTH AND COMMUNITY FOCUSED MAGAZINE IN THE UAE, CALL: 02 491 8624

MILLIE AND HONEY: ART

BRINGING LIGHT TO DELIGHT

By Sanah Chauhan

EVERYTHING IS INSPIRATION. IF YOU LOOK AT THE WORLD AS THE INCREDIBLE PLACE IT IS, THEN EACH MOMENT IS A FEAST” - Author Joseph Means

Husband, father, grandfather, pet- lover and traveller are just a few of the words that describe the colourful life of author Joseph Means. Born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1956, Joe had always been an avid reader and loved how each book took him on a new and exciting adventure. Now Joe lives with his wife and their four pets in Dubai and works as maintenance planning supervisor for Global Aerospace Logistics in Abu Dhabi. In his spare time Joe writes children’s books, which follow the adventures of his two main characters, a little girl called Millie and her cat Honey. Tempo caught up with Joe to talk about his creative pursuit. > TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. My wife and I moved to Dubai three years ago and of all the places we’ve been, we like it here the best. My wife and I have been blessed with seven children, 15 grandchildren, and two great-grand children. They are all scattered around England and the United States. Thanks to Facebook, we can keep in contact with them and their lives. We hope to retire in the next few years, but will continue working on the Millie and Honey series. > HOW DID YOU START WRITING AND WHEN DO YOU FIND TIME? For the past 30 odd years I have worked in the aviation industry, a reason we’ve always been on the move. The sights, sounds, smells and 30 | www.tempoplanet.com

flavours of every town, city, and country are different and I have always tried to express my feelings and thoughts in the best way possible to those I wrote to, in cards and letters. I wanted them to get the feel of every place that I visited. > WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION? Everything is inspiration. If you look at the world as the incredible place it is, then each moment is a feast. I was sitting at a stop light one day with my youngest daughter and we noticed a leaf being blown across the intersection. So I began a dialogue, as if I was the leaf, dodging the cars and asking the wind to move me out of the way of oncoming traffic. It lasted the whole time of the red light and the leaf had just made it safely across the street as the light changed.

> HOW DID THE CHARACTERS MILLIE AND HONEY COME ABOUT? My lovely wife, Rose and I live in Dubai, with our three dogs Honey, Rags, and Archie, and our cat, Thomas. Before we moved here, we lived in the United States with our puppy, Honey and our kitten, Thomas. I would talk to them and pretend they answered me. I used different voices and made up stories. It would be so funny and my wife and I would laugh for hours together. Since I usually carry on a running dialog, the stories are played out and built until they are written down later.

But for those few short magical moments, I was the leaf manoeuvring my way through traffic to cross the street. The fear, the anguish, the hope and the relief of braving the great unknown were exhilarating.

> WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS AND WHERE DO YOU SEE MILLIE AND HONEY IN FIVE YEARS? Millie and Honey will have their own full feature animated film and a daily cartoon, where they have adventures on different planets and learn many new things. I also see a wonderful game for younger children, where they interact in a learning capacity to make it through each level.

> WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PARTICULAR GENRE? There is nothing like the smile on a young person’s face and the light in their eyes when they are thoroughly entertained. Everything is new to them and is like an adventure. I have always loved teaching and I really enjoy telling stories.
