FINAL THESIS WORK Director Arq. Patricio Guerrero Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Ecuador
01 TFC FINAL PROJECT JOHANNA CEVALLOS
Work Thesis (TFC) was developed during the final year of Architecture. The project started with the analize of urban context (inmediate area of the New Park) to propose the architectural design of MIX-USED BUILDING. I considered this a very important zone between the park and the new urban development due to the relocation of the airport which would bring new regulations in height and density. The city is going to face the park and will not give the back as it was with the airport. Giving a new concept of urban life in the neightborhood, trying to avoid car transportation and make the project answer the local needs. Using theories of mixed-use archiecture and urban planning that allows us to understand how a city works within the urban context. I do focus on the context so the project work as a loop intead of a limit. making the zone becomes a space full of vibrant urban life. Existing user is recognized as the main actor. Consequently, the new user of the site who will be able to accssess current activities and those to be developed as a result of the changes that the site will experience. This way people can appreciate the benefits given by the mixed-use building in urban open space. These benefits are safety in the urban space at different times of day, help keep the car as the only means of transportation, teaching people to walk in comfortable places for pedestrians, and especially makes a space to become sustainable because its occupation and use is more, something that does not exist in Quito
materialize the vaccuum trhough the bundary because what I am looking for is to generate spatial, temporal that allow us to give life to the space where we can walk, move and communicate through the boundary of architecture form.

preface Housing is defined as buildings or other shelters in which people live, something that covers, protects, and supports specially, a dwelling. However, this is a shallow approach because in architecture and design has a pragmatic significance due to the knowledge obtained which makes sense when idealize a practical result. Therefore, for housing development, the most important aspects is to think in the human being, to understand the modern and relevant aspects of architecture and applied into materialized projects First of all, housing deals with humans and their continually evolving is needed as part of active societies. Consequently, housing design has been a response to the evolution of societies over time. It means that now it is meaningful to understand how society, culture, families or people have progressed and recognize new ways of individual and collective life, which has an important impact in modern architecture understanding. Additionally, the modern aspects that housing developments have to deal with are economics, social and sustainability, which define the viability of a project. Also, as professionals, is our responsibility to be aware of them since they also define form and functions, and be conscious that now a project constitutes an integrative approach among professionals, owners and Architects. Also, for housing projects, we have to wonder how to improve quality of life in order to bring pleasure when it materialized in the developments. For example, understanding concepts in architecture such as adaptability, flexibility and luxury, which are tools that help to give more value to the perception and use of living space. Michael Alder said, “Living in the rooms is part of architecture which means that at the end what we produce worth when is inhabited. To conclude, for housing development, there are important features to be reflected like people, modern projects aspects and the materialization of a project in order to end into a pragmatic solution. What is to be lifted of the city grasp? The elevation translates into a voyeur that talks about the pleasure of seeing the whole, of looking down. When one goes up he leave behind the mass, the density of a busy neighborhood. They can ignore and merge in the endless laberinthic. Its elevation puts into a distance that let him to read the city, looking down, like god eyes. The desire of seeing the city from other perspective is how this utopic proposal marks a possibility of exploring life in other level that optical knowledge has long had the ambition of surmounting of managing articulating the contradictions arising from the urban agglomeration The ordinary practitioners of the city live ‘down below’, below the thresholds’ at which visibility begins. They walk and experience the city, they write without being able to read it, They make use of spaces that can not be seen, their knowledge of them is blind because they are part of their own domain althought shared and domesticated for this.
...utopia is the principle of all progress, and the essay into a better world.” Anatole france

01 WORKSHOP: SLOWMADNESS JUAN HERREROS
To think about contemporary and domestic environments it is necessary to redefine what is wellbeingness in order to approach this into a utopic proposal as an answer of housing development and lifestyle study in which consider a new sensitivity for the common and usual paradigms to propose an innovative habitable democratic space. Integrate domesticity and urban domain through decreasing speediness in one’s life means bring new and challenge interest to the domestic space, its surroundings and the city. It is consider the slow movement as part of a life philosophy that is transmitted to the immediate inhabitable space. Make valuable what is next to one. But, starting from an own definition of domesticity as actions and relationships that have in common the comfort of an individual in space and time. It means people make own a public space to make it feel like home. For instance, it is common to see people reading and working in small cafeterias or parks which means people tend to domestic public spaces, to make them part of their own environment.
This is how society tends to work now, integrating the urban spaces as part of an extension of our home according the intimacy grade that someone needs. So, the proposal studies the reinvention of existing environments in order to potentiate them and propose this kind of relationships as a system that leads the configuration of a city. Moreover, it is an understanding of the continuous society evolution which means there is no more the traditional families composition. So, now there are different kinds of families, or people living together as family or just for necessity in both cases always there are situations that make them to remain together. Families join in small groups, they find common interest and why not common confortable collective spaces. domesticity actions and relationships that have in common the comfort of an individual in space and time.

But, housing is this utopic raised and evolutionated city is also a new experience of living. It means housing adapt to the inhabitants. Not people have to adapt to it. Every person is an own situation, and now the house itself is not longer a usual aproach, it is a developed design that adjust just to the right needs of the inhabitants. So, that why the usual spaces are presented in catalogue to help to customize personal cluster of living. 02 WORKSHOP: DEPTH STUDY ANDREA DEPLAZES
Talking about housing or residencial architecture, it is unavoidable thinking about typology, but considering it is an idea or image that has to be reinterpreted and appropriate because every housing project has its own rules and its owns clients and needs.
The interior of buildings we had consider interaction areas among the dwellings . The access area and circulation has concentrated in one path so they can be considered as places of social interaction.
The urban tissue, a city plot, give us some measurements and proportions of how a housing building would looks like. These information do not result of chance but of social, economic, climatic, technical, etc. Working with buildings 6, 9,12,15,18, 25 has its own answer and fulfill all common aspects of habitability.
Building depths
In this workshop was about working with the with the depth of the buildings and the consequences that each size has, considering its orientation, scale, internal distribution, light, comfort. Proposal leads an analysis of a building housing nine meters deep, with housing type 100 square meters each. The area used to house looking to be as efficient and optimal as possible for economically viable projects without forgetting that the proposal seeks to be as enjoyable for the life of the people who inhabit these spaces.

03 WORKSHOP: PLAYGROUND IN THE CITY BURGOS & GARRIDO
People use the city as a urban playground even if the architecture was not intented to be used for that. This is a way to perceive the city in it’s real magnitude, in a frame full of life. So, the city is the mean and life is the end.
How do I use the city as a playground? People according their age or activities use the existing fabric as their own playground. Playing soccer on the street, a card game, jumping rope or drawing and jumping, and now we see young people doing Parkour which are people that with jumps and spins claim a denied place in the city. Streets, garages, railings, stairs, containers, roofs, walls, facades are part of your scenary. They experience the city in a diferent way, because they do not reconize an imposed limit and use any urban element to do part of its tools. The project take advantage of the potential hidden in the city, exploit it and take it to be experienced by ordinary people with a little less skill than Parkours.

04 WORKSHOP: LIVING LIKE/WITH ANIMALS HRVOJE NJIRIC
Living like/with Animals is the workshop proposed by Hrvoje Njiric and Jose Maria Sรกnchez. The workshop started with a proposal of a individual housing type for an animal. It required study the way the animal live, its relationship with its enviroment and others. Then, the proposal was to intend to undertand how is the coexistence between human and animal. The animal chosen was the crab of the Christmas Island, Australia. It is a particular crab because its way of life and the fenomenom it produces in its ecosystem. The Zootopia proposal is a way of thinking how humans and animals coexist. In this case the proposal Ist about a machine of life for crabs.

My ears have not yet drunk a hundred words Of that tongue’s utterance, yet I know the sounds: Art thou not Romeo and a Montague? William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, “Balcony Scene”
This workshop focus in exploring an specific part of the housing design which is the INTERFACE or BUFFER. A space between the private real and the collective one and the explore the different posibilities and consequences. The façades of the existing city are built as a backdrop of the urban scene, a formal “dress” to protect the decorated variety of bourgeos interiors. On the other hand, the functionalist consider them as the envelop of a natural consequense of a correct resolution of a dwelling. Considering the scale of the single unit and its relation with the city, it is important to explore the need of a mediating element. The depth of these elements focus in the research of how a housing complex touch the ground and generate a transition with the strees, how it reaches the sky and borders the city. The result of this research is the design of an architectural devise enquiring on the “depth” of the interface between interior and exterior, between a dwelling unit and its urban environment.

from the city to the house I became aware that a house has to be understood as a type. [...] When you build a house, the client is the first occupant; pehaps twenty years later other people will live in it. When I design a house today, I start out from the rooms, without defining them more close; they can be used in different ways, and what the occupants make of them can be used in different ways. ans what the occupants make of htem determines what they are. Living in the rooms is part of architecture. _ Michael Alder.

Housing is a vast term, but how architects approach to it is followed by principles that deal with some issues from different levels. These principles are first of all people, economic, behavior and the last ecological thinking. First, housing today has to do with family although the social development has changed and now we see less and less families. So, there is around 50 or 60% of people that we do not address its situation to understand a typology, or architectural or economic questions when we do housing. Also, now in modernity when it is about housing we have the chance of choosing even if it is about low cost covering and we transformed in square meters per person according location or economic situation.
This has impact in architectural thought. And also this translate to a how we think now, for instance when we refer to it we talk about square meters and money of course. It is our social responsibility to make architectural structures on low economic cost that inhabitants can solve its necessities. The culture is the most form-giving architectural ideas. This is one of the conditions we have to deal with. The last is to make a own approach to sustainability according the each situation. It is important to consider the relationship between what we put in the building and what there are the benefits that it is gotten from it. So, for getting sustainable qualities to housing projects the question of comfort is the most important one because only if we reach it people earn a long life and long lifespan is one of the most important values.

What makes a good condition of life ?

07 WORKSHOP: GOOD CONDITIONS OF LIFE ANNE LACATON
This project is about a collection of fragments that express what makes a good conditions of life. The quality of life is based on the idea of the pleasure that people have when they inhabit a space, the well-being, the different atmospheres, the real conception of the comfort. This approach proposes a new concept of housing adapted to evolution or new needs of the contemporary families or societies. The proposal wants to perceive a house within the different atmospheres, understanding a contemporary way of life where the inhabits can experience the space according the importance of the sensations that the climate offers. Inhabit a place to live have to be generous, comfortable, appropriable and economic viable and why not luxury. Where the lux of an space is determinated for the quality or the extra space we offer not for the quantity of money we spend.
Architecture is a sequence of spaces.
Approaching to research about new housing conditions we can give to the inhabitants an attractive idea or living collectively in a denser city. In the project, we propose an architecture that reconciles the need of individuality and privacy and the collectivity and need of density. Understanding the life in collectivity is the most efficient way of living because of optimization of resources also because to live in community generate an active society. Thinking sustainability not just adding new technology but introducing new ways of living in housing. This is a project made of fragments from images, situations, spaces from the interior to a collective space taking in consideration the climate as a important mechanism that leads to a design configuration in interior enviroments and exterior dense cities. The architectural intentions we have taken are around the climate and the effect that it produces for the development of housing. The city should provide exceptional quality of life by

Master in Collective Housing HOUSING. Considering different levels would allow the house to have various thermal conditions for convenient appropriation according to its necessities. Spaces are rather defined by the activities and appropriation that each climate allows, instead of being the use the determination of its creation. Our challenge is for instance to take advantage of the climate and know how to use it to configurate the indoor spaces in a efficient way. The main thing that guide this is the LIGHT and the TEMPERATURE according to two dimensions, horizontal and vertical.
Horizontally, the plan is organized from the periphery to the center between the brightest and darkest, as a succession of walls, glass walls. Vertically, the space is emerging from bottom to top, colder to hot on the principle of natural rise of air masses according to their density and temperature.
COLD SPACE Bigger proportions, relation to the earth, lower temperatures, less heat conductible materials, more insulation. Low temperatures to rest and work; there is where a relaxing environment would take place. Elements as fresh air, views, shadows, naturally sounds, quietness, allowed by the materials.

WORKSHOP: GOOD CONDITIONS OF LIFE
The architecture is expresed by the combination of light and temperatures, varying by time during the day or activity. Interior spaces at different temperature that gives different sensation . People might choose from the coolest place to be more active or to the interior warmer place to be more quite. Both would have a different atmosphere to discover and appropriate.
WARM SPACE Natural conditions, shadows, air- flow, views. Relation to the exterior. Direct contact to the sun will increase heat by a green house on the roof top. Lightness. Transparency + privacy. More intimacy atmosphere

Speciality Sustainability by Javier Garcia German Proyect location: New York, NY
01 SPECIALITY: SUSTAINABILITY JAVIER GARCIA GERMAN
Sustainability is an issue that architects have to take responsibly, since decisions in the design process are very important for the performance of the buildings taking in consideration the environment.
A Home is not a House
Accordingly, a final project is a matter of balance between right design according climatic situations and extra accessories or technology added in order to approach a efficient configuration. Applying thermodynamic knowledge in architecture stresses the importance in to the spatial systems, to the shape, which turn into new ways of experience the architecture. It is not just about a theory but it is a way of through our everyday life can be part of a right decision. The Specialty of sustainability gave us a good taste of what is to take smart decisions in designing according climatic issues, which are also very related to a bioclimatic architecture.
A Home is not a House: The Environmental Bubble
Banham and Dallegret seem to defend a home architecture that is both hippie and ultratechnologique . Habitat joined by the environmental dimension of the space while defended by Reyner Banham for that architecture should “ disappear in environmental technology “ (The Architecture of the Well -Tempered Environment , 1969).

Working in the Studio Fabian Espinosa Arquitectos and EKP Constructora has been a very challeging and pleasent professional experience due to it allowed me to link to the professional scope since student. I started as an intern in the Rehabilitation Project Comtemporary Art center of the city, and then after finishing my studies I joined to the company. I have worked directly with Seniors Architects in different projects of the company which mostly focuses on housing projects. Those Projects are Casa Cumbaya, Torre Gandia, Sierra, where I participated in a vriadity of duties such as drawing, design, modeling, , and other general office activities. I have collaborated with the company EKP Constructora in certain construction trades and supervicion, also in publications, advertisement of real state. Which I have been involved in the commercial part as well.
