a message from the regional director Greetings Sorors of the Fantastic Far Western Region, I am honored and humbled to be re-elected for a second term! The first two years were filled with excitement and action. Sorors of the Far Western Region, because you excelled in Global Leadership Through Timeless Service we are able to give ourselves an “outstanding score” of completion as we check off each of the GLTTS Initiatives. Now we look to a new administration and a new vision! Congratulations to our new Supreme Basileus Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, who has given us five program target areas, six Impact Days and a new theme for the Sorority under her administration Launching New Dimensions of Service. Our region has set the pace this fall with a focus on education. In addition to collecting and donating backpacks and school supplies, we have also looked back to make our natural connection to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) , paying homage to where Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded at Howard University. This is a great time to show support to these colleges and universities and help keep them viable. They still remain a part of our past and continuing legacy. Give a shout out to the HBCUs! Sorors, I ask you to partner with me as we take the Far Western Region to new heights in the target areas of Launching New Dimensions of Service (LNDS). We will continue to do “Big Things” in the Far Western Region. We will support our sorors in whatever they need through our phenomenal Sisterly Relations strategies, where we encourage sorors to connect with one another, celebrate with one another, be available to one another and help each other. We have a new International Committee called Sisterly Relations that will support us in inspiring even greater collaborations and caring throughout Alpha Kappa Alpha as we strengthen the bonds among sorors. We will continue the charge to increase retention, reclaim inactive sorors and add new sorors to this great sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha. At our fall conferences we broadened our circle of soror- friends and connected with someone new.I was glad to see Sorors at the Undergraduate Roundup and Clusters, and to see sorors attend clusters throughout the regionas well. We attended to workshops that shared Soror Dorothy’s new program and how the Far Western Region will implement it. Each chapter basileus should remember to preview the DVD in chapter meeting when she receives it this fall on the launch of Madam Supreme’s new program, Launching New Dimensions of Service. Please keep the LNDS program in mind as you finalizeyour 2015 programs and budgets. As we close out 2014, the excitement of 2015 rings in the air as we look toward Founder’s Day celebrations throughout the region and the 86th Regional Conference in beautiful Southern California at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa. Sorors of the Fantastic Far Western Region, we accomplished “Big Things” in the first 2 years of my administration. Let’s do Bigger and Better Things to execute Alpha Kappa Alpha’s international program, to increase and expand the service that we give and lastly, to reinvigorate the sisterhood through our acts of caring and kindness throughout our sister network. Afterall, we are the Far Western Region and we are committed to doing good things and bigger things in this second act. So stay tuned and get involved.

Sisterly, Soror Barbara Denson Trotter

Far Western Regional Director

Dr. Ida Louise Jackson 8th Supreme Basileus

Alpha Kappa Alpha Hosts Wreath Laying Ceremonies for Former Supreme Basilei Supreme Basileus Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson set August 2 as a national day of tribute to the Sorority’s deceased former Supreme Basilei. Chapters across the nation participated in Wreath Laying Ceremonies to honor 20 former Supreme Basilei who have become Ivies Beyond the Wall. The theme for the day was A Celebration of Remembrance, A Proud Past…A Promising Future. It was a day to pause and remember the legacy of timeless service, leadership, and sisterhood left by the Sorority’s 8th Supreme Basileus. In Oakland, California the Far Western Region paid tribute to the Sorority’s Former Supreme Basileus, Soror Ida Louise Jackson. The Wreath Laying Ceremony was a great moment of reflection, pride and love for the former Supreme and the Region. The words spoken by Far Western Regional Director, Dr. Barbara Denson Trotter, about our beloved former Supreme Basileus, Soror Ida Louise Jackson, were inspirational and uplifting and reminded us of the strong legacy of leaders who have made Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority the powerful force she is today. Soror Trotter said “Our hearts are grateful for the legacy of our dear beloved 8th Supreme Basileus Ida L. Jackson. Before she became the International President of AKA, Soror Ida was a Far Western Regional Director. Former Far Western Regional Directors, Soror Archalene Amos Martin and Soror Norma Jean Tucker joined the current Regional Director, Dr. Barbara Denson Trotter in honoring the life and legacy of 8th Supreme Basileus, Dr. Ida Louise Jackson. FAR WEST CHAPTER NEWS

Welcome to Our New Sorors of Delta Zeta Omega - San Francisco, CA

June 8, 2014 was a special day for the Sorors of Delta Zeta Omega Chapter. Three fabulous women were initiated into our illustrious sisterhood. Sorors Ayana Johnson, Tamitrice Rice Mitchell, and Nichelle Rachal, became members of Delta Zeta Omega Chapter during a very moving and emotional commitment ceremony. These women are the first to complete the updated Membership Intake Process of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. During the Membership Intake Process, they worked very diligently, learning all they could about our organization and the values we hold near and dear to our hearts. The entire chapter rallied together to nurture and educate these women, but would not have been able to do it without the entire membership committee and the leadership of the membership committee chair, Soror Dayo Diggs and Basileus Kellie Tuck. Her commitment and dedication to this process was stellar, unmatched, and mirrored the lyrics in our Hymn, “We help each other.”

Epsilon Xi Omega Hosts Global Poverty Fundraiser Benefiting Heifer International - San Diego, CA Sorors of Epsilon Xi Omega hosted a fundraiser to benefit Heifer International, in support of the Global Poverty Initiative. The fundraiser was held at a popular local restaurant, O’s American Kitchen. Prior to the event, flyers were distributed to chapter members and the community, informing them of the opportunity to participate. Throughout the evening, sorors and their families, friends and co-workers visited the restaurant for dinner. Some stayed to fellowship while others picked up take-out orders, each receiving a receipt with their donation total. It was a great way to bring sorors together for a cause! A total of $644.94 was spent by event supporters, with $178.98 of that slated to benefit Heifer International. EXO has selected families in Kenya and Ecuador as their Heifer International recipients.

Zeta Omega Omega Has Leadership Retreat - Tacoma, WA The theme for the 2014 retreat was Launching New Dimensions of Service and occurred on August 16, 2014 at The Tacoma Country and Golf Club. The day included valuable information regarding corporate and chapter duties and procedures as well as fun interpersonal activities. Training and informational topics included an overview of the 2014-2018 International Programs, chapter finances, chapter bylaws, sisterly relation activities, connections, ways and means, and the chapter's website. Sorors were empowered with the knowledge needed to enhance local programs to ensure that Zeta Omega Omega continues to move forward. 16.

FAR WEST CHAPTER NEWS Theta Mu Omega Recognized in Los Angeles Sentinel for Human Trafficking Efforts - Inglewood, CA Theta Mu Omega was featured in the September 4, 2014 issue of The Los Angeles Sentinel for its continuing work in the area of Human Trafficking. The article, written by Soror Nicole Jones, raised awareness of the global epidemic as well as social injustices it creates. “Modern Day Slavery – Exposed” was held as a collaborative forum on March 8, 2014. The purpose of the forum was to educate, inspire and inform. These efforts to continue to educate the community were evident during a panel discussion in partnership with Holman United Methodist Church. Additionally, outreach was designed to assist in changing legislation in the areas of penalty, assets forfeiture, civil nuisance and victim resources. Without proper legislation the negative effects result in physical and mental health issues as well as social justice issues. Theta Mu Omega continues to advocate for health education and support legislative change.

Mu Beta Omega Participates in Back-to-School Drive - Inglewood, CA Mu Beta Omega Chapter continued its’ work of exemplifying Global Leadership Through Timeless Service as Sorors recently provided 35 school children with supplies for going back to school. The collaborative effort between Mu Beta Omega and PIN fulfills the mandate of Initiative II, Global Poverty. On August 29, 2014 an abundance of pens, pencils, calculators, notebooks, folders, highlighters, markers, colored pencils, binders and writing paper were donated to the corporate office, located on the premises of Praises of Zion Baptist Church. The items were delivered by Basileus Monica Webb, Anti-Basileus Babette De Lay and Soror Rashauna Fair.

Psi Upsilon Omega Builds Playground - Henderson, NV

On April 15, 2014 members of Psi Upsilon Omega joined over 400 volunteers from southern Nevada to help rebuild the Child Haven playground. Child Haven is a facility for abused and neglected children. Via the Playful City USA initiative, communities are able to utilize play as an innovative solution to address a number of challenges facing kids, families, and communities. In turn, these communities retain a competitive advantage by creating healthier, more vibrant communities where families want to live and companies want to do business. The completely refurbished playground was made possible via a grant by KaBoom.org.

Rho Delta Omega Receives $15,000 Grant from YWCA - Palo Alto, CA The Ivy and Pearls Foundation of Rho Delta Omega Chapter received a $15,000 grant from the YWCA of the Mid-Peninsula Donor Advised Fund of the Women’s Foundation of California. The focus of the Fund is to support local organizations and programs aligned with the YWCA’s two-fold mission: Eliminating Racism and Empowering Women and Girls. The programming provided by RDO during the past 26 years in the Palo Alto and East Palo Alto communities correlates directly with the Fund’s mission. The Ivy and Pearls Foundation of RDO previously received a $10,000 grant for our Emerging Young Leaders Program during the 2011-12 grant cycle. The current grant funds will be allocated for training, strategic planning and capacity building, in addition to program support as we implement Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated’s Launching New Dimensions of Service program targets. Receipt of this grant is very timely, as RDO make strides to strengthen the operations of the Ivy and Pearls Foundation so that it is well positioned to pursue other grant opportunities that will support programs implemented by the chapter.

Xi Gamma Omega Surpasses Team Goal for AIDS Walk - Oakland, CA

Xi Gamma Omega chapter’s, Soror Nichole Jordan led the 2014 AIDS Walk Team of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She has been walking for 8 years now in honor of her uncle, Michael Ward, who passed away in 1989 due to AIDS-related complications. She has been the driving force behind the AKAXGO team, which Soror Nichole reinvigorated last year. Although she has a personal tie to HIV/AIDS because of her uncle, she recognizes that, on a community level, African American women are contracting HIV at a higher rate than any other group. The XGO, Alpha Kappa Alpha team surpassed its goal of $2500 by raising $2650 this July with Soror Nicole Jordan raising a substantial amount herself. She was featured on the AIDS Walk home page and was named a “Star Walker”!

Xi Gamma Omega Sorors also continued their annual backpack drive in support of the 3rd grade students of Martin Luther King Jr. elementary school in Oakland, CA. XGO members filled 50 backpacks and provided students with much needed school supplies to help start their year off right! 19. 19.

2014 UNDERGRADUATE

ROUND-UP

Over a hundred undergraduates attended the 2014 Undergraduate Roundup in Los Angeles, California September 26-27, 2014. Far Western Regional Director, Dr. Barbara Denson Trotter, began the Roundup, with a rededication ceremony. After the opening ceremony, sorors enjoyed some sisterly social time while having dinner. The social hour was a time for graduate and undergraduate sorors to bond. Later that evening, undergraduate sorors were treated to Up Close and Personal time with the Regional Director. The Undergraduates only event gave undergraduate sorors a chance to connect with the Regional Director and each other. They talked, laughed, worked on crafts and ate snacks. Some of the topics up for discussion included etiquette, dating, appropriate attire, social media and sisterly relations. There was also a time for open discussion questions. Saturday was a full day of informative, inspirational, exciting workshops. Launching New Services, Staying on Target was the theme for the Round-Up. Madam Regional Director gave the Status of the Undergraduates. The Undergraduates were riding high after hearing the progress of the undergraduates. While the atmosphere was high Launching New Dimensions of Service International program was presented. Sorors were encouraged to Stay on Target and excel in the implementation of the 5 Target Areas of Supreme Basileus, Dorothy Buchanan Wilson’s new program for 2014-2018. Other workshops included Sisterly Relations, Protocol, Undergraduate Forum, Undergraduate Membership and Leadership, and Soror Code of Ethics. The Soror Code of Ethics (Soror Celle after Boule) made reference to last years' workshop about the ills of hazing. As presented at the 2013 cluster, Soror Celle was a mannequin wearing an orange jail suit which symbolized a fictitious soror who had committed various infractions against our governing documents. Soror Celle was portrayed as an example "symbolizing what not to do." There was a panel discussion including college dean, law enforcement, and graduate advisor. This years' presentation on The Soror Code of Ethics took the discussion to the next level via video, citing some examples of infractions which generated much discussion around the Soror Code of Ethics and possible repercussions from infractions. Madam Regional Director spoke and opened for discussion about the inappropriateness of Soror Celle's behavior and asked sorors to think about how this type of inappropriate behavior by any sorors could impact our chapters, our selves as sorors, and our sorority if we allow this kind of behavior to persist. Soror Trotter's emphatic note during the discussion was "We cannot afford hazing or hazers. Hazing will not be tolerated in any form, and she also referred sorors to their governing documents, including the Soror Code of Ethics and the anti-hazing brochures.
