All About Rho

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Rho Chapter was chartered on August 21st, 1921 at the University of California Berkeley. As the first chapter established in the Far Western Region, Rho makes it a goal to lead the Far West with high scholastic and ethical standards.

Rho chapter Sorors are heavily involved in UC Berkeley and Community affairs. As a result, each member of Rho contributes a special perspective on our how to tend to our community’s needs.

Throughout 2023, Chapter Basileus and Anti-Basileus, Michaela Shaw and Reed Broaders, have led members of Rho Chapter to be responsive to community needs through the target Initiatives of “Soaring to Greater Heights of Sisterhood and Service”. Empower our Families

Build our Economic Wealth

As an initiative to build our community’s economic wealth, Rho chapter went to Black owned businesses. in the Bay Area and spent $19.08! We encouraged others to join us in this initiative via Instagram. To the left are pictures of Soror Jasmine and Soror Reed supporting a Blackowned resturaunt!

Enhance Our Environment

Rho Chapter takes Environmental Justice very seriously! We wanted to raise awareness for Climate Justice, so we held an event (pictured on the top left) to educate our Berkeley community on what they can do to help. Pictured at the top right, and at the bottom is Rho chapter collaborating with Oakland’s Pardee Home Museum to plant trees around the city.

Advocate for Social Justice

Rho Chapter supported the YWCA with their Register to Vote event! During this event Rho collaborated with the YWCA to give a history lesson on women’s suffrage, and encouraged young women to register to vote for the upcoming election. We want to give a special thank you to

Soror Freda Greene of Alpha Nu Omega for giving Rho chapter the opportunity to empower women!

Uplift Our Local Community

Rho chapter understands that it is important to uplift our city‘s community as well as our school‘s community. In the month of August, we hosted our “Welcome Back to School“ event where we provided Cal‘s Black students with resources they can utilize during the school year. In addition, Rho also made visits to Castlemont and McClymond‘s high school to represent Alpha Kappa Alpha and give advice to incoming college students.
