RETAIL DESIGN
The senior Directed Studies Studio is focused on designing a retail store for a French fashion brand—Bleuforêt. The brand offers a range of knitted fashion accessories, mainly hosiery items for men and women characterized by high quality materials and design, both elegant and contemporary. “Fine materials, innovation, fantastic style and the great care given to the sewing, make the different ranges of the very special Bleuforêt socks.” With such a distinctive image, the Bleuforêt store should be able to defend the idea of high quality hosiery shopping experience. The design idea is to conceive a luxury store with a hint of sexiness yet playful to encourage customers to explore the entire store.

Different from the traditional way of displaying socks on stocking mannequins, the store features a special display system to showcase the textures and color of the merchandise. Over a hundreds of metal tubes warped with socks are attached on movable panels, customers will be able to feel and appreciate the merchandise’s high quality materials. Solid, smooth materials in natural color are used to highlight the warm, soft textures and color of the merchandise.

A raised platform with illuminated flooring is located in the back of the store to stimulate the customers’ intention to fully explore the entire store. A suspended metal curtain serving as a translucent screen covers half of the view to the platform. The customers’ viewing experience is further stimulated through exposing the lower view to the platform and forcing one to focus on other shoppers’ legs while browsing merchandise. The usage of metal curtain also helps to emphasize the sense of sexiness thought out the store and further encourage customers to explore the entire store.

CONFERENCE CENTER
360 Conference Center is Located in the intersection of Newbury St. and Mass. Ave. In 1989, the building was renovated by architect Frank Gehry who’s been famous by his style of Deconstructivism. The function of a conference center is to provide a place for companies or organizations to conduct conferences. Patrons who are going to use the facility will be staying inside the facility for a long period of time during the day. In order to provide patrons a better conferencing experience, the design concept is to focusing on bringing in the nature thorough out the interior spaces. By walking through the spaces, patrons will have a change to exploring the elements of nature without stepping out of the building. Indoor “green wall”, artificial sunlight, and organic shapes will be used in order to achieve this idea. Though the various cutouts on each floor, the building became a living organism like a tree with its irregular shape.

OFFICE RETAIL DESIGN
Built around 1850, the Waltham Watch Factory is characterized by a series of narrow wings with arch windows along the red bricks walls in order to maximize daylight for the production of watches. The challenge of this assignment was to design a 2 level law firm within the complex. Due to the historical value of the Watch Factory complex, the intention of this law firm design is to create a relationship between the exterior and the interior of the building. Circular, rectangular and U shaped furnitures are used to emphasize the window shapes of the existing building. Low workstation partitions are used to maximize daylight and to recreate the scene of the old watch factory. Casual meeting areas through out the space are provided to promote collaboration among colleagues. In contrast to the solid walls of the existing building, millworks will be suspended off the floor to create a sense of free flow.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN
Located in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood right next to the Boston Fire Museum is FP3, a loft building designed by Hakim + Associates. The building itself is a combination of two existing masonry structure buildings with a two level steel framed extension. The first challenge of this assignment was to layout eight units including three penthouses which required square footage within the two level extension. Another challenge was to design a home within one of the three penthouse units for a young professional couple. On top of this challenge, a requirement of nature related concept was asked for further development.

The final concept was to focus on the relationship between daytime and nighttime human activities, inspired from images of different times of the day within a wood. The unit is divided into two parts distinguished by different activities along the day. The lower level of the unit resembles the energized activities within a wood when the sun is up. It is where all the gathering events are going to take place. A semi enclosed dining area is located in the middle of the living room adjacent to both the open kitchen and the lounge area. Warm and earth tone colors are used on this level to emphasize the idea of energized activities. Moving up along the suspended staircase is the upper level of the penthouse where the master bedroom and a workspace with a small library are located. It was meant to resemble to how the atmosphere becomes calm and relaxed at night within the wood. Earth tone colors such as gray and black are used on this level to tie in the idea of calmness and relaxation during the night. Along with the abstract concept, a nine-square grid is used to layout the floor plans on both levels.

The assignment was to design a small restaurant within a renovated train viaduct in Paris, France— Viaduct des Arts. The challenge of this assignment was the limitation of concept idea, which must be related to trains, travel and transportation. As a result, with a research study based on French train travel history, the concept was settled on recreating the various moments of train traveling. While entering the restaurant, patrons will immediately feel like entering the body of a train cart at the restaurant’s waiting area and exit it while walking toward the main dining area. The area is served as a destination of a train travel trip; it was designed to mimic the idea that patrons have to leave the train in order to reach the destination of their trips. A back dining area is created to provide a more intimate dining experience similar to sitting in a train cart with one’s close friends. Above the enclosed private dining is the mezzanine space where a bar is located. In order to enter the bar area, patrons have to walk through a path on top of the waiting area train cart-like structure. The idea is to reflect the planted promenade on top of the viaduct where patrons can further appreciate the arch structure of the building.
