WELCOME

elcome to the fifth anniversary issue of Business Traveller India. We’ve turned five and it’s safe to say, it’s been quite an eventful half decade from 2015, when we brought to you our first issue. From then on, we’ve constantly endeavoured to present frequent travellers like yourselves with relevant reads by our seasoned editorial team. To say times are tough for the frequent corporate traveller is an understatement. With the pandemic of Covid-19 halting travel around the world, it is imperative for us to practice social distancing and look after our wellbeing. Featured across our sections is a host of information with regards to the issue at hand, including what select hotels are doing to handle the crisis. Having said that, in view of the current world-wide scenario, we have taken the decision to combine our April, May, June and July issues. This is a time to reflect on our travels over the years, and our cover story takes you on a virtual journey of global cities and what they shine for, in our opinion. We also recommend hotels to bookmark at these metropolises, so you know where to stay once international travel opens up again. Speaking of hotels, our hospitality section takes an in-depth view of some of our preferred hotel destinations in India, what they must be chosen for, as per your discerning travel tastes. From iconic watches to put on your wrist this year, expert opinions by authorities in hospitality and reviews of hotels, lounges and restaurants, this combined issue blends an array of subjects you will find useful during this quiet travel time. Until then, be safe and I do hope to see you all travel again - soon.

What inspired you to work on a book? Being from the subcontinent, one can never truly divorce oneself from the partition, but growing up, I never really had an interest in it, despite all four of my grandparents being able to trace their histories to what became Pakistan. It was only when I became an adult and
had intimate encounters with stories from across the border, that the need to translate them into a generational history became important. People’s personal stories of migration — often overlooked as secondary to facts and figures — became my subject matter and led to the writing of a book. Do you personally like to travel domestically or internationally? I travel both circuits, often for work or field research. Since the beginning of this year, I have travelled to Rajasthan for the wonderful Jaipur Literature Festival, to Mumbai for a friend’s wedding, and, I am due to make a long trip to the US and UK on a book tour.
Do you like to read on the plane? What kinds of books interest you while travelling? I almost always carry a book on flights, usually whatever I am reading at the moment, unless it’s too heavy to lug around! At the moment, it is Julie Otsuka’s ‘The Buddha in the Attic’. When can we see your next published book? I am working on something that should be published in 2021.

The Stare Off by Revati Victor Travel blogger and wildlife enthusiast Revati Victor has long been fascinated by leopards, owing in part to their elusive nature. This stare off between her lens and the leopard was captured at Nagzira Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra. "My extensive forays into the jungles of central India have at the most revealed fleeting glimpses of their rosette patterns or sparkling eyes before they've disappeared into the darkness. But owing to fewer tigers, the leopards of Nagzira are bold and brazen. This female led us down a trail to the watering hole where she sat for an hour, allowing me to photograph her at length with my Sony A7riii, never once taking her gaze off us.”

While retaining the trademark horseshoe-shaped bar, Emirates’ latest A380 Onboard Lounge offers more seating space with a new arrangement along the windows on both sides of the bar. Inspired by private yacht cabins, each seating area has a table and window view. Overall, the lounge can comfortably accommodate up to 26 passengers at a time, including eight seated. HUB OF CULTURE
Qasr Al Hosn, which reopened in December 2018, following extensive renovations by the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi. It is deemed to be an important inclusion to Abu Dhabi’s tourism landscape. The site comprises four interrelated components — the historic Qasr Al Hosn Fort; the Cultural Foundation that hosts a diverse visual and performing arts programme; the National Consultative Council Building; and the House of Artisans, promoting and preserving UAE’s intangible lineage. By a way of these, DCT Abu Dhabi aims to encourage visitors to explore authentic landmarks of the city. Albeit the emirate plays a huge emphasis on the bygone days – a visit to the Paris landmark’s first international outpost, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will make you see its modern contemporary side. You can either check out an exhibition or watch a live performance at this marvel. Moreover, we recommend exploring the region’s culture and heritage via a plethora of local experiences – from cruising in a traditional boat to riding a horse and camel racing.
SOJOURN DURING RAMADAN To profoundly understand the culture of Abu Dhabi, a visit during the holy season of ramadan is ideal. Enjoy delicacies like shorbat harees (wheat and meat soup), machboos laham (meat cooked with yellow rice simmered in the meat stock with Arabic spices and dry lemon) while observing local families coming together to celebrate this momentous occasion. 45

ome to the National Theatre, historic forts, cultural institutions, and majestic mosques, Abu Dhabi is one of middle east’s most impressive cultural centres. Its grand heritage with rich history and majestic monuments have always drawn us to this emirate. Here’s a lowdown on the capital of the UAE from an edifying lens: An epitome of Abu Dhabi’s illustrious heritage, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an instantly recognisable global icon that blends different Islamic architectural schools. During Ramadan 2019, the mosque welcomed more than 1.4 million worshippers according to the Gulf News. The mosque features 82 domes, more than 1,000 columns, 24k-gold gilded chandeliers, and the world’s largest handknotted carpet. Some of its other notable elements include domes clad in white marble, onion-shaped crowns and crescent-shaped finials decorated with gold-glass mosaic. Another celebrated gem in our opinion is Al Ain Oasis, just two hours from the main city. Spreading across 3,000 acres, Al Ain is host to a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It houses Qasr Al Muwaiji, a century-old fortress; Al Jahili Fort showcasing permanent exhibitions of photographs taken by British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger during his 1940s crossings of the ‘Empty Quarter’ desert; ‘falaj’ - UAE’s traditional irrigation system and Ali Ain’s Eco Centre that offers curated storytelling through interactive installations. xperts from the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) say that sports events in Doha are becoming an increasingly important factor in attracting travellers from all over the world. QTA has already branded their sports tourism with a strategic plan (for 2017-2023) with the powerful tagline ‘Qatar Welcomes the World’. Qatar, particularly Doha, packs its annual calendar with major global sports events that hail tourists from all over the world. A prominent example is the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, which is set to run from November to December. For this, Doha is gearing up to play a major role as one of the three host cities. Not surprisingly, some of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar venues are in Doha. These include Al Rayyan Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Education City Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Lusail Stadium and Ras Abu Aboud Stadium.
WHERE TO STAY Taking references from the emirate’s history, culture and modern architecture, Mandarin Oriental, Doha is one of the newest additions to the city’s luxury hotel scene. Located in the centre of Msheireb Downtown Doha – the hotel offers plush rooms, suites, and serviced apartments. We recommend the two-bedroom Royal Suite on the top floor that has a stunning view of Doha, a private entrance, with an open-countryard and a private plunge pool. mandarinoriental.com
While the Khalifa International Stadium with an illustrious history (Gulf Cup, Asian Games and the AFC Asian Cup) has played host to several prestigious games in the past, Education City Stadium is the latest venue of 2020 that draws on the rich history of Islamic architecture, blending it with striking modernity. Doha has also hosted major championships such as the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006 and the 2011 Plan Arab Games. Moreover, in its latest effort to establish Doha as a major sports capital, Qatar is considering a bid for the 2030 Asian Games. Evidently, its contribution to the world of sports is unquestioned — and an important factor that’s driving us to Qatari shores this year too. MUST-VISIT: ASPIRE ZONE A 20-minute drive from central Doha, Aspire Zone is a sports destination featuring state-of-the-art training facilities and sporting venues including the historic Khalifa International Stadium. There is ‘The Hamad Aquatic Centre’ that houses facilities for swimming, water polo, diving and other aquatic sports. Additionally, there is ‘The Ladies Sports Hall’ that focuses on amenities for women’s sports. A P R I L-J U LY 2 0 2 0

A more invigorating business ambience can be fostered at Festhalle Frankfurt. Although, widely used for big music and entertainment concerts, this multi-purpose arena can well fit the brief of a “MICE event outside the ballroom”. Festhalle Frankfurt provides 5,646 sqm, with space for up to 8,500 people (together with the two tiers) seated, and 13,500 people unseated. Along with great connectivity and avant-garde meeting venues, Frankfurt boasts a favourable environment for hosting several incentive and team building activities for MICE groups. Thematic city tours, cruise trips, culinary and brewing experiences, book fairs, interactive games and workshops are few of the many recreational programmes to undertake in Frankfurt.

Frankfurt Airport is a key aviation hub in Europe, with a network covering around 300 destinations spread across 100 countries. In total, Frankfurt offers around 56,900 keys. rankfurt offers a balanced ecosystem for MICE groups who prefer a cosmopolitan, modern venue; but at the same time look for ways to cutdown on large carbon footprints generated during conclaves of such high magnitude. Guiding corporates and business tourists in this effort to execute a green meeting is Frankfurt Convention Bureau, an effective local body that helps in identifying meeting sites and event planners in the German city with sustainability as their principle focus. One such conference centre in Frankfurt is Kap Europa which has won several accolades for highlighting the green concept in both its design as well as operations. The space has the capacity to host up to 2,400 guests — there are two halls for 1,000 and 600 people respectively and 12 conference rooms. If you wish to hire a larger space, there is Congress Center Messe Frankfurt (CMF) capable of accommodating up to 3,400 people. The centre offers easy access to hotels, public transport and parking spaces, and is a ten-minute walk from the Central Station. The adjacent Maritim Hotel Frankfurt can be utilised for guest stays, saving you the transport cost and fuel consumption. For groups having easy accessibility and connectivity as the top priority, Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel and Conference Center, located directly at Terminal 1 of Frankfurt Airport, serves well. rchitectural ecstasy can be best explained using Istanbul’s dazzling landscape as an exemplar. Located in the Marmara region of Turkey, the city is bedecked with picturesque mosques topped with mystical minarets, churches, synagogues, palaces, castles, medieval towers and vibrant bazaars, reflecting influences of the Roman, Byzantine, Genoese, Ottoman, and contemporary establishments who have left an indelible mark on the region and its people. When we think of Istanbul, the first image that springs to our minds is that of Hagia Sophia museum and Sultan Ahmed Mosque majestically facing each other with Bosphorus as the backdrop. Once a Greek Orthodox Christian cathedral, then an Ottoman imperial mosque and now a museum, Hagia Sophia is characterised by its floral, geometrical and figurative mosaic decorations. Intricacies of Ottoman calligraphy can be seen at this UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Sultan Ahmed Mosque (widely known as the Blue Mosque) has remained prominent in the spiritual circuit of Turkey for centuries now. Its premises feature the tomb of Ahmed I (Sultan of Ottoman Empire from 1603 to 1617), a hospice and a madrasah (educational organisation). The iconic structure is dubbed as the Blue Mosque due to the hand-painted blue tiles adorning its interiors. History and architecture enthusiasts would be interested to know that this is first of the two mosques in Turkey to have six minarets — the other one is

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey, also breathed his last moments here. Grand chandeliers, soft silk carpets and gold leaf ceiling are few design elements of this 19thcentury building, the construction of which was much talked about because of its whopping cost of US$1.5 million in today’s worth. Imagine yourself with a cup of hot Turkish coffee amidst the scenic turquoise waters of the Bosphorus that connects Asia to Europe. Well, this is what Maiden’s Tower, situated on the sea at the entrance of the waterway offers. It has assumed numerous roles including that of a watchtower and a lighthouse that eventually became a restaurant. TASTE TRENDS
If your taste in Asian food strays more towards the east, further from India, London’s quirky restaurants will set you off on a gastronomical adventure. Flesh & Buns, a Japanese izakaya restaurant and bar with outposts at Covent Garden and Oxford Circus serves up the likes of rabbit katsu and pulled beef cheek for meat enthusiasts. MẮM (pronounced like mum) on All Saints Road showcases a whole new side of Vietnamese cuisine. Their signature papaya cocktail is one to try. However, London’s latest pan-Asian import from the USA is PF Chang that offers gourmet Asian fare such as black truffle sushi rolls and lobster spring rolls. For Korean food, one of the most trending cuisines in the English capital currently, head to On The Bad. The Korean tradition of chimaek – fried chicken wings with ice-cold beer – is brought to life here. While the dim sum at A Wong in Pimplico is nothing less than artwork, we recommend its ten-course ‘Taste of China’ that showcases China’s undiscovered regional cuisine. Although it is clear that the English capital prides itself on exclusive fine-dining experiences, an exploration of its street food is worth your time as well. Brockley, Broadway, Borough and Camden Markets are some of the hotspots of London’s delectable street food vendors. On your list should be the chipotle beef burrito at Luardos (Brockley Market); candied bacon burger at Tongue ’n Cheek (Camden Market); slow-roasted pork belly with cucumber, spring onions and hoisin sauce at Yum Bun (Kitchen Spitalfields Market); and soy noodle salad with vegan fish sauce at Day Chay (Borough Market).

ining in London is an exhilarating experience, to say the least. While the city boasts veritable experiences like traditional afternoon teas and British classic fare, it has expanded its horizon to progressive cuisines like Indian fusion, Ethiopian and modern middle eastern. But if that’s too experimental for your palate, London houses 67 Michelin-starred restaurants on its grid, ranging from one-star to two- and three-star outlets like the glorious Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, which has held three stars since 2001. While Michelin-starred restaurants are rightly considered to be a hit on the pocket, there are all sorts of Michelin eateries here that range from pubs, classic British hotspots to elusive sushi bars. With two Michelin-stars each, try Dinner by Heston Blumenthal for classic British recipes with a modern twist at Hyde Park; Umu for its ‘kaiseki tasting menu’ with eight courses at Mayfair; and Kitchen Table at Bubbledogs at Goodge Street that serves ‘dogs and champers’ or well, hotdogs and champagne. The new wave of Indian restaurants in London is another trend to watch out for. This home of chicken tikka masala has forayed far and wide; perhaps even overtaking the origin country for its version of Indian food. Going beyond rice and curry are these restaurants — Kahani at Sloane Square for innovative cocktails and British-Indian dishes; Flora Indica at Old Brompton road that takes diners on a culinary journey across India; and Bombay Bustle at Maddox Street that evokes the story of the Indian railway network through its endearing menu.

he dramatic landscape of Iceland has made its way onto our travel radar this year. With mountains that are volcanically active, icebergs, geothermal spas, ancient ruins of airplane wreckages, surreal ‘bubble’ hotels that reduce the barriers between you and nature to practically none, this Nordic country has much to offer. An ideal way to start your Icelandic sojourn is at Reykjavík — the country’s capital. With a vibrant culture, eclectic festivals, endearing architecture and inspiring museums, there’s much to do in Reykjavík before you start your nature-filled adventures around the country. What’s also interesting is that the country is small enough for you to drive across its landscape — making Reykjavík your ideal hub. So while you are in the city, a good way to immerse yourself in Nordic culture would be to explore some of Reykjavík’s museums. These include National Museum that features artefacts from the country’s settlement to its modern age; Settlement Exhibition, a permanent fascinating archaeological ruin-museum; and National Gallery of Iceland that showcases ever-changing exhibits at galleries overlooking Tjörnin lake. Perhaps the city’s most iconic landmark however is Hallgrímskirkja — a striking whiteconcrete church that stands out because of its massive 5275-pipe organ that was installed in 1992. Another aspect that can be keenly on your trip to Reykjavík is Nordic cuisine. HIDDEN TIPPLES
For a local bar-hopping experience, reserve one evening to walk across Shibuya whilst sipping ‘highballs’ or whisky-sodas at the various pubs here. Though you will come across many izakayas (dinein sake shops), visit Hachigatsu No Kujira, a bar that offers a cinemainspired ambiance. The walls are adorned with numerous clippings of movie posters. Drinks are quirky and are named after various popular films. We loved a cocktail called ‘small iceberg floating on a sea of brandy’ that instantly reminded us of an iconic movie tragedy (hint: Rose and Jack). Nestled in the upscale Ginza neighbourhood, Bar High Five is a classic, low-lit Tokyo bar known for sublime drinks and traditional Japanese bartending. There is no drink menu and the bartenders engage with customers to create bespoke cocktails according to their taste preferences. One of their signature cocktails includes ‘ceremony’ featuring all Japanese ingredients such as Hakusha whiskey, Hermes Green Tea and Suntory Matcha. Another bar in Ginza to put on your list is Bar Lupin that opened back in 1928. The bar was a once home to the Japanese literati, (supported by writers as Kyoka Izumi and Kan Kikuchi). On the menu, you will find an impressive selection of cocktails, bourbons, and whiskies. We recommend you try The Golden Fizz, a gin drink made with egg yolk.

okyo’s bar scene is considered to be one of the most sought after experiences in travel. Every crevice in the Japanese capital is filled with speakeasies and drinking holes. Prominent neighbourhoods such as Shinjuku, Roppongi, Ginza and Shibuya are packed with a wide selection of premium bars, exclusive restaurants and buzzing nightclubs. Nearly 300 bars and restaurants are squeezed into ‘Golden Gai’, a traditional bar neighbourhood in Shinjuku. We recommend you check out Bar Albatross here, one of the hippest bars in the city that was established in the late 1990s. This kitschy décor space comprises of three storeys, making it easy to accommodate big groups. The menu offers an impressive mix of cocktails made with houseinfused spirits, warm sake and an expansive wine collection. If you are looking for some local whisky, head to Bar Zoetrope, a quaint little whisky bar in Shinjuku. Notice the classic films that play silently in the background while the bartender guides you through the mind-boggling drinks menu. From the rare Yamazaki editions to Nikka Single Malt — this dimly lit bar boasts over 300 varieties of whiskies. Moreover, the bar displays malts from some notable Japanese distilleries, including Mars, Chichibu, White Oak, Karuizawa, and Hanyu. A P R I L-J U LY 2 0 2 0

ome to ten of the world’s largest financial firms, with tech giants and a colossal data centre industry along with a powerful local startup scene, Zurich’s stance in business and economy is unprecedented. With an unemployment rate at 3 per cent, which is less than half of that of the European average unemployment rate at 6.8 per cent, Zurich shines with its prosperity, orderliness and low taxes, hailing us business travellers like us, time and again. Zurich’s finance sector generates around a third of the wealth and a quarter of the jobs in the city. Biotechnology and life sciences are currently empowering its burgeoning medical tech sector. While niche markets such as the automotive and the aerospace industries are accelerating, Zurich’s life sciences sector is also seeing consistent success. Complementing its service sector, Zurich is also being positioned as an international congress and tourism venue for global business travellers. The economic powerhouse of Switzerland, 80 of the country’s 100 largest companies are headquartered within an hour’s drive from its centre. Medium- and large-scale firms find skilled and qualified employees in addition to specialists with international experience within the Zürich economic area. The Swiss-city is frequently ranked as the second-most competitive financial centre in Europe, after London. However, experts have stated that the advent of Brexit may alter this situation in Zurich’s favour. While only time can prove this theory right, it’s undeniable that Zurich has a favourable business climate, attracting a workforce of 330,000 from international shores (with 90 per cent of them in the service sector) and almost 60,000 students who study at schools like ETH Zurich and University of Zurich. Forward working conditions such as just salaries and advantageous social benefits, equal opportunities for both genders and an expansive range of training possibilities are enough to urge these students to participate in the burgeoning business scene of Zurich.

Cooper Carry Architects won 2019’s Radical Innovation Design Award for Hospitality for its “Connectic” concept. GOING ELECTRIC
Electric aircraft are coming, but their capabilities depend on the development of batteries. There are more than 170 companies working on electric and hybrid aircraft projects, from Airbus and Boeing to start-ups such as Wright Electric. Rolls-Royce is working on the fastest-ever all-electric aircraft (right), set to fly this year, and has teamed up with Airbus and Siemens on the E-Fan X, a two-megawatt, hybrid-electric engine for commercial aircraft due to debut in 2021. The biggest markets for such aircraft would likely be short-haul airlines and private aviation. Easyjet says it wants to fly routes such as London-Amsterdam with electric planes by 2027, although critics say this is overly optimistic. Long-haul electric flights are a distant prospect. As Airbus’s chief technology officer, Grazia Vittadini, points out, batteries that are 30 times more efficient and “energy-dense” than they are today could still only fly an A320 one-fifth of its current range with half of its payload.
AERODYNAMICS
76
The “Flying V” (above) is a prototype being funded by KLM and developed by a Dutch university. Its aerodynamic shape reduces fuel burn by 20 per cent compared with an A350 and the passenger cabins, cargo hold and fuel tanks are located in its wings, which fit within existing gate infrastructure. KLM says the design would “improve passenger experience, from the seating layout in the wings, to the design of the seats and bathrooms”. Airbus recently trialled wing tips that flap in the wind (right). They are designed to move like an albatross’s wings to minimise the effects of turbulence.

SEAT DESIGN
EVTOLS
Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft are all-electric and companies such as Volocopter (pictured), Lilium, Uber and Airbus are developing models. They could revolutionise urban mobility, although regulatory approval will depend on safety considerations and how people react to them flying low overhead.
A P R I L-J U LY 2 0 2 0
The growth of premium economy may see new types of seat emerge. The design pictured on the right, by UK firm Universal Movement, folds to create two firm “wings” on both sides that add privacy and allow you to rest your head. Can business class get any better? Mike Crump, brand experience director at Acumen Design Associates, believes aircraft interiors could become more flexible, with options for dual dining, double beds, family areas and work spaces, breaking down class structures. The biggest changes are likely to be in technology – for example, facial recognition syncing your IFE to your personal accounts and adjusting your comfort preferences, and immersive experiences provided via OLED screens. business traveller india
THE NEW SUPERSONIC
The US Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration say they are “taking steps to advance the development of civil supersonic aircraft”. Boeing has partnered with US manufacturer Aerion to develop a plane (see artist’s impression above) that would fly at Mach 1.4 (approximately 1,600km per hour). Meanwhile, Boom Supersonic is building a Mach 2.2 aircraft that it hopes to fly by mid-2020, and Lockheed Martin has a contract with NASA to build a “low boom” demonstration aircraft.

BETTER BIOMETRICS
Biometrics are well under way to revolutionising how we navigate the airport. As well as getting you through check-in, security and boarding without a passport or boarding pass, facial recognition will likely be used to let adverts target passengers based on age, gender or mood, provide lounge access, and as payment for shopping.
ROBOTS
Already answering queries at airports including Heathrow, robot assistants will become more sophisticated. They will park cars (as the above model from Stanley Robotics already does), drive passengers to their gate through facial recognition, and solve complex issues.
HYPERLOOP MOVEMENT
British Airways’ report BA 2119: Flight of the Future suggests airports, and even aircraft, may be integrated with a hyperloop-style transit system, with travellers transported in modules from craft to craft. Check-in, food, drink, IFE selection and visa checks could be carried out within the hyperloop (a proposed high-speed mode of transport moving passengers via electric propulsion through a low-pressure tube).
78
AIRPORT DESIGN
Entries to the annual Fentress Global Challenge, an airport design competition for young architects, provide a glimpse into how different the airports of the future could look. The winning 2019 design by Daoru Wang shows a “drive-through airport”, with aircraft moving through phases in a line and the terminal facilities in a skyscraper rather than sprawling at ground level. Another design by Christopher Johnson sees an aircraft drive-through process take place underneath the terminal.
79
STREAMLINED SECURITY
A new generation of sophisticated security scanners is emerging that will eliminate the necessity for liquids to be put in plastic bags or shoes to be removed. Combined with facial recognition, such devices will transform how travellers pass through security. In the near future, security measures could simply involve an escalator ride through various face and body scanners, or may even be carried out on public transport en route to the airport.
CHECK-IN AND BAG-DROP
IT provider SITA predicts the end of airport check-in desks, which will be replaced entirely with online check-in and self-service points, with passengers updated on every stage of the journey – boarding, flight changes, bag movements – via their mobile phones. SITA says that in the future remote bag drop-off and collection will be offered at multiple points in the journey, such as at a train station, car park or coffee shop. These will be connected to high-speed conveyor belts and tracked throughout the journey. More services will enable pick-up or delivery to homes and hotels. A P R I L-J U LY 2 0 2 0

TRANSLATION TECHNOLOGY
TO INFINITY AND BEYOND
80
Once technology takes over, will we need to learn languages? Apps and devices can already translate in real time and, according to Ericsson Consumer Lab’s 10 Hot Consumer Trends 2030: The Internet of Senses, some 70 per cent of consumers expect to have earphones that automatically and flawlessly translate languages by 2030. In the far future, humans might even be microchipped, with the brain receiving instant translations, or maybe we’ll be able to mind-read, doing away with words altogether.
Visited everywhere? Soon you’ll be able to leave the stratosphere with the launch (pun intended) of space hotels. Elon Musk’s Space X Starship aims to fly its first private passenger around the Moon in 2023, and Virgin Galactic is still marketing its £200,000 flights aboard its Space Ship Two for take-off this year. The Gateway Foundation’s Von Braun Rotating Space Station plans to start hotel operations in 2025, with stays costing an eight-figure sum. The station will produce varying levels of gravity by adjusting the rate of rotation – so you can experience weightlessness but also have your feet on solid ground when dining or exercising. Orion Span will also join the era of commercial space with the modular Aurora Station. Activities here include growing food while in orbit and the opportunity to experience zero gravity. The luxury hotel will launch 12-day trips starting at US$9.5 million per person in 2022 and is now accepting deposits, so get saving.
FLOATING CITIES
With 90 per cent of the world’s largest cities exposed to rising seas by 2050, Oceanix has designed the first sustainable floating city for 10,000 residents. The flood- and storm-proof habitat of six neighbourhoods is located around a protected central habitat, with communal farming. Buildings made from locally sourced materials can be moved to more suitable locations when weather demands. At the same time, we’ll also dig deeper. In Samsung’s KX50: The Future in Focus report, Professor Dale Russell predicts the arrival of earthscrapers (inverted skyscrapers) to save space in ever more crowded metropolises.

Millennials, show-rooming, and evolving technology platforms are disrupting businesses and stalling growth. In an environment where competition is extremely cutthroat, brands are cognisant of the fact that the competitive lead they once experienced due to product differentiation no longer holds value with the proliferation of similar services in the market. Competition in today’s market is severe, which makes securing new customers even more complicated and less profitable. Cost-cutting, hence, becomes the default strategic response. Yet, to build a long-term relationship with their customers, companies have over the years enhanced the overall service experience and established robust loyalty programmes. Loyalty programmes help satisfy the ever-greater needs of consumers. Credit card companies make for a stellar example to portray how a lucrative loyalty programme can uplift your business model, by honing in on the rewards and perks that make using credit cards a great option for the consumers. Such schemes include cash backs, complimentary goods/services and other benefits allowing loyalty points to be accrued upon each swipe. his is London. The nation’s economic and cultural power house that has been renowned for its British hospitality for centuries. The city is a truly international market-place for business and leisure travellers alike and attracts visitors from all over the world every single day – it is the home of hospitality. London offers plenty of accommodation choices from three- to five-star hotels, B&Bs, super luxury hotels, to our perfectly located Copthorne Tara Hotel London, Kensington that is just walking distance from so many attractions and with great links to business districts of the city. The English capital is known for being diverse and the fact that it can endure any global challenges. Even with the current political and economic uncertainty, the British metropolis is still forecasting modest growth for 2020 (as per PWC report in 2019). The long period of anxiety surrounding Brexit, certainly made the corporate world doubtful about London’s future. Since the referendum was held in 2016, companies have held off investment or spending due to the looming advent of Brexit. However, nearly a third of business travellers say Brexit is actually impacting their corporate travel in a positive way — especially for local business, as they are tending to travel more within the UK. business traveller india
Additionally, Brexit is in some ways accelerating business and creating new leads for the hospitality industry. International concerns were often considered bad for event planning, however this overlooks the fact that major issues are often the impetus for more events and hence more travel, as per Sheffrif Karamat, PCMA (Professional Convention Management Association). And there has been no sign of a pipeline slowdown. More than 200 new hotels have been granted planning permission in recent months and some are already well into the construction process. The investors are enticed by the number of tourists and the weaker pound. Law firm Boodle Hatfield said the UK’s hotel sector is one of the few parts of the British economy to have benefited from the Brexit slump in sterling. While the British pound has been weakening for years now and will probably reach parity with the Euro soon; this has encouraged the inbound leisure tourism market for London. In 2016, I was preparing the opening event of our new hotel in Singapore and was worried about the economic shock and potential resulting crisis. Instead our executive chairman Kwek Leng Beng (of the Millennium Hotels & Resorts group) stated that there will be more opportunities for us, as he maintained

that business confidence very much remains as the long term fundamental of hospitality. There is no doubt that Brexit is having a negative impact on UK tourism, but the reasons for London being a top destination for leisure and business will not change and indeed new and unforeseen opportunities have since arisen. The city is unique, in that it is indispensable, It cannot be replicated or even disrupted by any economic downturns. It’s still one of top global business capitals of the world and London will continue to thrive well into the future. BTI A P R I L-J U LY 2 0 2 0

he hospitality industry is costantly evolving to support its local economy and we often see hotel trends reflect the economic demands of the surrounding tourism industry. Qatar’s National Vision 2030 is shaped by the vision of the people, projecting a future of sustainable development and high quality of life for generations to come. This vision incorporates four main pillars of sustainable development including human, social, economic and environmental. Qatar’s tourism industry is expanding rapidly, with great attention to detail placed on the importance of looking ahead to the future while still being deeply rooted in culture, heritage and tradition. This is evident in the many cultural sites we see, including the renowned Museum of Islamic Art, the eclectic Souq Waqif which offers a traditional bazaar setting in a glittering modern city and lest we mention the newly opened masterpiece, the National Museum of Qatar. We also see continued support by the Qatar National Tourism Council and Qatar Airways, the nation’s airline, both actively working on diversifying tourism offerings through promoting leisure attractions and placing Doha on the map as more than just a “stop-over” destination. Qatar Airways also continues to add new destinations to truly make Doha a top transit hub. Being a vital player in the tourism sector, the hospitality industry further solidifies the nations efforts with many projects aimed to enhance the visitor experience. With worldwide events such as the FIFA World Cup in 2020, we see continuous investment in hosting top sport events annually such as the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters Golf Tournament and the Qatar ExxonMobil Open Tennis Tournaments for Men and Ladies. Visitors can also witness groundbreaking developments with one of the largest and the world’s first sustainable downtown regeneration project, Msheireb Downtown Doha. The vision is to develop a modern downtown which reflects identity of the city’s past and to reconnect Doha and its residents with its tradition and heritage, and most importantly with sustainability in mind. Not only is the project a reconnection with the heritage, it shows innovation through technology and city planning. Mandarin Oriental, Doha is ideally situated at the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha, as a key actor in the sustainable downtown regeneration project that distinguishes Qatar in the realm of sustainable development. We continually aim to contribute to the Nation’s growth in areas such as social and environmental sustainability. ur guests have become more eco conscious, thanks to the continuous news cycle and the growing realisation among the general public who know that the environment is in trouble. The hospitality industry too needs to become more environmentally friendly, review its impact and do its part. The industry’s drive to be more sustainable is more of a stumble than a sprint. Some companies and brands have embraced the challenge, putting it at the forefront of their businesses. In India, ITC Hotels, CGH Earth and Alila Hotels and Resorts come to mind. Many of the bigger international brands are now creating policies and programmes to ensure they are not left behind. But what can our industry really do? Going green is driven by the three basic principles of reuse, recycle and reduce. As an industry, we are very wasteful. Every day, we generate hundreds of kilograms of garbage, we use bucket loads of water and kilojoules of energy. Most hotels keep tabs on their energy consumption and costs daily. Unless you are running a recently built hotel, your building is leaking energy – with sensible capital investment, the ROI would be greater. Hyatt Regency Delhi recently did such an exercise and gained a platinum LEED certification – not bad for a hotel that’s almost 40 years old! Hotels and restaurants send tonnes of rubbish to landfill, including food waste, business traveller india
The industry’s drive to be more sustainable is more of a stumble than a print
packaging and even discarded linens. Start to monitor the amounts of wet and dry garbage produced and see where you can reduce it. The lavish breakfast buffet produces mountains of food waste (and food cost); in a world where obesity has become a public health issue, do the portions really need to be that big? As for packaging, speak to your suppliers about reducing double packaging, and make them responsible for taking back the packaging for reuse or recycling. Move to large-format amenities and save on those tiny bottles. Hotels can also encourage guests to bring and fill their own water bottles. Look at investing in drinking water stations so guests can refill water bottles. Reducing the amount of chemicals and pollutants is also important. There are good environmentally friendly chemicals for both kitchen and laundry – and some actually work. Reusing is always a little difficult. As a society, we are not good at it, so let’s stick to recycling. As hard as we try, we cannot eliminate all waste, so let’s try to recycle as much as possible. Not all plastic is bad; if it can be recycled and reused in another form, it is likely to have a lower carbon footprint than those expensive bamboo toothbrushes or sandwich packets. Nobody said being a friend to the environment would be cheap. It may have a small impact on your P&L, which is why it is important that we have input from top to bottom, owner and operator. sing the services of travel agents once involved calling an acquaintance or someone recommended by your friends/family and asking them to book you a ticket or a holiday package. If they managed to do it, that’s basically what gaining customer trust and loyalty were limited to, then. However, the rise of online travel agents (OTAs) in the early 2000s led to a tectonic shift in the travel industry, taking almost everything online and changing the way customers approach their travel planning. This brought several more options to choose from, reviews out in the open, and extremely competitive prices. Today, almost two decades later, this landscape has undergone a massive transformation once again, with technological innovations impacting both consumer behaviour and the ever-rising competition. Now, loyalty means more than just word-of-mouth. It’s what you give back to your customers to make them feel like they are valued for the business they are giving you. new year and a brand-new decade gives us a brief moment to pause and reflect on what might come next in technology trends within, but not limited to, travel. Jeff Bezos rightly said in ‘Bold: How to Go Big, Create Wealth, and Impact the World’ — when speaking about the future of tech, “What is not going to change in the next ten years?,” he said. Working in an industry that champions change, it goes against the grain to admit that big technology-driven forces don’t come along that often – and when they do, they typically get missed, or scoffed at. I’m willing to bet a half-decent lunch that no one can find a trends piece in 2006 that highlighted the release of an Apple mobile phone as the catalyst for a massive shift in how we experience ‘online’, fuelling an always-on society, and changing almost every industry along the way.
