How to Install SMPS in your Computer SMPS is one of the most important electronic instruments used in various applications. They are commonly used in computers. The power supply of computers are controlled by SMPS. When the Power supply is damaged the Computer can exhibit any strange behaviors like failing to restart and other things. Today I will teach you how to install SMPS in your computer.
SMPS or Switched Mode Power Supply is an electronic power supply that incorporates a switching regulator to convert electrical power efficiently. Like other power supplies, an SMPS transfers power from a DC or AC source to DC loads, such as a personal computer, while converting voltage and current characteristics.
The reason why SMPS is often used in many applications is because of its High efficiency, lightweight, cost-effective and its flexible technology.
The steps for installing the SMPS in your computer are given below: 1. Before Replacing the SMPS unplug all the wires and cables attached to the CPU.
2. Gather all your tools and open the CPU housing which is usually the right-hand side of the CPU box when looking at the back of the box. You may need a different screwdriver for your power supply as well—look at the screws that came with the power supply to determine whether or not this is the case.
3. Gently remove the power supply unit or the SMPS. If your power supply unit (PSU) includes a power switch accessible on the rear of your PC, flip it to the off position, and then remove the side panel of your case so you can access the PSU.
4. Refer to your computer's instruction manual for the proper placement of the power supply unit, or look for a rectangular cut-out on the back of the case.
5. Gently place the new unit inside the case so that its screw holes line up with the holes in the case. With the "back" of the power supply unit pressed against the back of the case, insert the included screws to lock the power supply into place. The connection for the AC power cord should be facing to the outside of the case. Now fix it with screws.
6. Here is a checklist of connections:
One (1) 20/24-pin main connector(Motherboard)
One (1) 4/8-pin ATX12V connector
Any required hard drives or optical drive connector(s)
6/8-pin PCI Express video card power connector(s)
7. Find the main power cable on the power supply and insert 24 pin connector in motherboard, then attach the secondary power cable to the motherboard.
8. Using the smaller cables, connect the power supply to your computer's hard drive, CD drive, and graphics card. If you have other components in your case, you may need to plug these in as well. 9. For hard drives and CD drives, use the larger 4-pin auxiliary connectors for IDE drives and Serial ATA power connectors for Serial ATA drives, but do not plug both types into one device. Use 6\8 pin connector for video cards. 10. Close and plug back in your PC. Place the cover back on the PC, then stand it up and plug it back into the wall and your monitor.
11. Turn on your computer. If everything is connected and powered properly, the fan on the power supply should turn on and your computer will boot like usual. I hope you have understood how to install SMPS in your computer. Get Additional Information on SMPS and explore the applications of it.
