The following series of pictures is a photographic account of various visual representations of local gods in Mirzapur. The intent was to look at these images, which surround the people of the area, look at their implications and translations. Represented here is Khodiyar Maa, and her choice of locomotion, the crocodile. The visual is neatly detailed with attention to gradients. Medium- Tile art

Representation in three different forms;paintings, sculpture and a fairly modern translation as a sticker* reference ahead. Also to be noted is the measure of repetition of the visual in a given area. I imagine the social implications these may have. Medium- Digital prints, Stenciled stickers, relatively traditional bust (seems to be marble) An audio+visual imposition of the image. Well detailed, large artwork, with importance given to the placement of the image. Temple environment. Medium- Painting

A seemingly grotesque representation of mythological female forms. Representation of blood, violence is done suggestively. Size of the artwork and its placement (here in a cavity in a structure) are determining factors. Medium- Tile art

Representation of Shivaji Maharajah at the gates of residential compound. One area of Mirzapur is predominantly Hindu, thus defining the presence of saffron as hue in the environments. Attention needs to be paid to Shivaji Maharajah; a Maratha warrior and his visual presence in a distant place. A visual identity of the place is represented by the shield, swords and the tiger. Medium- Painting

A local goddess represented on a dog as her vehicle. Interrelations between animals and human beings is interesting.

On the right, is a promotional visual for something which seems to be a VCD recording of devotional songs in praise of the goddess.

Medium- Digital print

The objective of the next series of pictures, was to look at the simultaneous existence of this other world, which employs most people of the place.

Machine-shops of Mirzapur The area boasts of specialists in vehicle repair, machining, fabrication, furnishing, accessories, scrap metal, automotive junk, spare parts and engineering. The three separate markets and occupations here; _ Automobile spare-parts _ Vehicle fabrication _ Automobile scrap (kabaad) The three markets generate huge revenue for the people here on account of their proximity, accessibility and fair price. This makes Mirzapur a one stop shop in the older parts of Ahmedabad.

The intent was to look at shop and service displays and study visual similarities in how elaborately individuals organize their automotive spares. Medium-Painted boards Graphical representation

Image Making A strong developing visual culture is seen in automobile fabrication and furnishing. The images are very global and a few are regional cult symbols. Medium- Sticker making

A careful utilization of space, is done intently while creating expressive spaces through product display. Keeping in mind the shortage of space, abundance of material, most of which has met extinction, the people have arrangements made on top of the buildings for hoarding scrap material.
