A History of Excellence

In 1999, the year after their chartering, the Upsilon Omega Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. created their scholarship and debutante program. The Emeralds of Excellence name was inherited from the interest group that chartered the chapter the year before, in 1998. At that time, the chapter consisted of less than 20 members, many of which had just graduated from college themselves. As we worked to define programs that would support and positively impact our communities, it became apparent that there was a deep desire to work with young women to help prepare them for successful college careers. Many of the members had been debutantes for various organizations as part of their introductions to society during their high school careers. Although the organizations may have been different, the experiences were much the same. (Countless debutante balls with over 100 young ladies, with scholarships only given to the top 2-3%.) Upsilon Omega Omega vowed to be different and they have been, every since the 19992000 season. That first season, there were only four (4) debutantes, but that didn’t stop the chapter from creating a full season of programs. They had money workshops to teach them how to avoid the pitfalls of poor money management and credit cards. They participated in community service projects, to instill the importance of serving the community. We hosted activities with the debutantes and their mothers and separate activities for the debutantes and their dads – all to reinforce the ties that bind. They had etiquette classes and ballroom dance lessons, all which culminated with a debutante ball. That May, four debutantes were awarded a total $4,000, and the Upsilon Omega Omega signature program was established. Through the years, the Emeralds of Excellence Scholarship Program has continued to grow and be refined, but the principles that it was founded on will always remain the same. Provide young women with the tools needed to be the leaders of the next generation, keep the number of Emeralds small enough that they can develop meaningful, lasting relationships with members of Alpha Kappa Alpha and each other, and award scholarships to each girl that earns it through her excellence throughout the year, not just on her individual ability to fundraise. May 14, 2016 culminates the 10th season of Emeralds of Excellence. To date, we have created 131 “Shimmering Emeralds” who have received approximately $136,500 in scholarships, and we are just getting started.

Upsilon Omega Omega Chapter

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908 to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be supreme in service to all mankind. The sorority is composed of ten regions, including the international region. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is dedicated to improving our communities through various programs targeting the needs of the community. The Upsilon Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered on May 9, 1998 and is headquartered in Irmo, South Carolina. The foresight of Upsilon Omega Omega began with the vision of her three insightful charter members, Malicia Sherman, Audria Pendergrass and Emily McCants, and evolved into an interest group of sixteen (16) young women known as the Emeralds of Excellence. The Emeralds of Excellence persevered many months and worked hard in the community until the reality of Upsilon Omega Omega was established. Upsilon Omega Omega continues to be supreme in service through a multitude of programs. Some of our programs include The Cinderella Project, a partnership with the SC Bar Association Young Lawyers Division to provide gently worn prom dresses and accessories free of charge to high school students; the Still Standing Survivors’ Luncheon, where we honor members of the community who have survived various health and personal crises such as HIV/AIDS, breast cancer and postpartum depression; the Women to Work Economic Empowerment Seminars, which provides insightful information to undergraduates and young adults about interviewing and work etiquette; seeking, maintaining and advancing in employment, and financial literacy. We sponsor voter education drives to register voters and educate the community about the voting process. Upsilon Omega Omega’s Girls of Promise and Boys of Purpose Mentoring Program provides to fifth grade girls and boys age appropriate information on a variety of topics ranging from peer pressure and bullying to online safety. Upsilon Omega Omega is a firm supporter of health initiatives such as the Palmetto Health Foundation’s Walk for Life, the American Cancer Society, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Stroke and Heart Disease Awareness and Alzheimer's Disease and Caregiver Support Programs. We also provide annual assistance to senior citizens residing at a local residential facility; collaborate with religious organizations to provide essential services to the homeless population, and youth aging out of the foster care system. Our annual Jazz & Art fundraiser provides funding for many of our chapter programs.

Master & Mistress OF CEREMONY

Meet Len Kiese

Len Kiese wakes up dark and early to bring people in the Midlands the news of the

day on WIS News Ten Sunrise alongside Mary King. He comes to the Palmetto State from Jacksonville, Florida, where he worked for two years as an anchor and reporter. He also spent several years in Albany, Georgia, where he got his start in the news business. Home for Len is Baltimore, Md. where he was born, raised and eventually graduated from Towson University. After graduating, he immediately jumped into broadcast journalism, a dream of his for as long as he can remember.

Meet Von Gaskins I am a meteorologist with an extensive background in severe weather tracking and radar interpretation. Currently, I am a meteorologist at WIS TV in Columbia SC, before that I was a meteorologist at WNCT TV in Greenville, NC. There I tracked tornadoes and severe thunderstorms using Baron's Viper Radar. I have also been a meteorologist at WWAY in Wilmington, NC and WPDE in Myrtle Beach, SC. Educationally; I have a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. I also hold a Master's of Science in Geosciences and Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS. I am well known by teachers across the Midlands of SC as a source for weather knowledge. I am often invited into classrooms to share my weather knowledge with students. I am frequently called upon to emcee or judge local events and speak to young students and church groups about turning dreams into realities through hard work and perseverance. My volunteerism did not start when I returned to the Midlands. I have traveled to the Island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic/ Haiti) as a missionary, while there I helped to build a church and assisted at an orphanage. In the US, I have served as a volunteer with CODA (Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse) helping women and children to rebuild their lives after being victims of domestic violence. Personally, I am an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I am married to my soul mate J. Anthony Gaskin and we are the proud parents of three handsome little boys!

Favorite memory of the Cotillion Season

Being a part of the Emeralds of Excellence has been a positive impact for me both personally and educationally. I have met other debutantes of various backgrounds. All of the events leading up to the cotillion were helpful, fun, memorable and most of all creating a bond with a group of girls I knew nothing about. My goal of meeting friends and creating new friendships has been met. There are two events that I think I enjoyed the most. The painting at Wine and Design followed by the sleepover was definitely a bonding experience. We made our vision boards and competed in dancing. The service project of Childhood Hunger Impact Day was another event that brought different people together for the same goal. I still remember our first event, it was so quiet like 61 you could almost hear the sound of the crickets. Now it’s hard to keep us quiet.

I believed the socializing was also important because we all got to share common views and comfortably bounce ideas off of each other when talking about the service project and I believe that’s what sisterhood should be about - support, love, respect, and cooperation.
