FROM
THE PUBLISHER
Loving Lake Welcome to our beautiful county, where fun is served with a heaping helping of Southern hospitality.
As a magazine publisher for the past 13 years, it brings me great pleasure to assist in putting together the 2021 issue of Welcome to Lake. I am a lifelong Lake County resident who graduated from Leesburg High School in 1990. Growing up, this was a
10 • W E L C O M E
TO LAKE COUNTY
quiet, rural county with few things to do. Things have changed considerably in the past 30 years. *Three of Florida’s 10 fastest-growing towns are in Lake County—Fruitland Park, Groveland and Clermont. *The Leesburg Bikefest is the world’s largest three-day motorcycle festival, typically attracting 250,000 people. *Downtown Tavares, once a site primarily for governmental offices, has transformed itself into “America’s Seaplane City.” *The Mount Dora Arts Festival is one of the largest of its kind in the Southeastern United States, drawing 300,000 people. Folks, I could go on and on. But here’s the bottom line: Lake County is not only a great place to work and play but also a wonderful place to visit. Charming, quaint towns, endless outdoor opportunities, picturesque waterways, and top-notch festivals and events are just a few reasons why our tourism industry has exploded in recent years. More and more, we’re finding that vacationers to Florida want something different from the theme
park experience, where short tempers and long lines are common. By the end of the day, anticipated fun, thrills and excitement have produced physical exhaustion, sunburned skin and aching, blistered feet. Fortunately, tourists can put their stress on vacation by escaping to Lake County for one day, a weekend retreat, or longer. The county’s natural resources and laid-back atmosphere allow vacationers to enjoy a wealth of fun-filled opportunities—shopping, outdoor recreation, historical sites, varied dining choices, world-class resorts, beautiful golf courses, picturesque springs, acres of hiking trails and so much more. In these pages, you’ll understand why vacationers are putting Lake County on their must-see list. We graciously welcome you to our little slice of heaven in Central Florida. Sincerely,

FOREST GATEWAY A LT O O N A • U M AT I L L A • A S T O R
Small, rustic towns that allow you to escape the hustle and bustle of metropolitan areas are a big part of Lake County’s charm. Few towns epitomize that more than the ones nearest the Ocala National Forest. A visit to Umatilla, Altoona and Astor allows locals and tourists to take advantage of abundant nature.
ALEXANDER SPRINGS
18 • W E L C O M E
TO LAKE COUNTY
ALTOONA Population: 85 Size: .5 square miles
Visitors can explore the wonders of a stunning underwater world in Altoona thanks to the nearby Alexander Springs Recreation Area, a popular site to swim, snorkel and dive yearround in the crystal clear waters of the springs. Alexander Springs is also the only place in the Ocala National Forest where scuba diving is permitted. The broad, natural, gently sloped spring pool becomes nature’s water park, where visitors can play and picnic, swim and hike. Visitors often comment that diving in the crystal-clear springs is one of the most peaceful feelings they’ve ever experienced. Alexander Springs is one of only 27 first-magnitude springs in Florida, meaning it gushes water from the ground at a rate of 100 cubic feet per second from under the ground. In addition to diving, visitors can canoe down Alexander Creek or enjoy a nature walk on a hiking trail. The water’s temperature remains 72 degrees year-round. Altoona also is the site of the McTureous Homestead and Museum, which gives visitors a glimpse of the life of a Florida Cracker family from the early 19th century.
ASTOR
Population: 1,595 Size: 2.3 square miles From big bass tournaments to leisurely, narrated boat cruises, Astor’s location on the St. Johns River allows visitors to get close to nature. Step aboard a covered pontoon boat at Captain Ernie’s St. Johns River Tours and learn all about local plants and wildlife. Or paddle Blue Creek Run, a four-mile scenic trip that leads paddlers from Astor to the St. Johns River. Blue Creek is known for its diverse wildlife and picturesque views of wading birds, alligators, otter and eagles. Astor is also the place for the avid fisherman to dock, with half a dozen boat ramps and Powell’s Campground for campers wishing to have an extended trip. The St. Johns River and Lake George, both located on the border of northern Lake County, are known for some of the best fishing in the state for catfish and trophy largemouth bass. A memorable hiking and birdwatching adventure is available at Bluffton Recreation Area, which offers a .75-mile nature trail. Visitors can also enjoy a multi-day experience at Castaways on the River, which offers cozy cottages, boat rentals, and is known for its frog legs, grouper filet, snow crab legs and popcorn shrimp. Another nice place to dine in Astor is atop the Blackwater Inn at William’s Landing, where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the St. Johns River while feasting on popular seafood items and other dishes.
SUNSATIONAL CITRUS CITRUS SUNSATIONAL
UMATILLA Population: 4,196 Size: 3 square miles
BLACKWATER INN
Birds chirping, frogs croaking and wild turkeys clucking make a wonderful soundtrack for Umatilla, which is appropriately nicknamed “Nature’s Hometown.” Brimming with historic charm and scenic beauty, Umatilla offers many benefits that big-city life cannot: shorter commutes and less time spent in traffic, low crime levels, small-town hospitality, intimate churches and friendly neighbors. It’s also a great place to enjoy outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, camping and hiking. One of the most popular hiking destinations is Sawgrass Island, a 1,137-acre preserve where hikers take in breathtaking views of sawgrass marshes and longleaf pine communities. The preserve is home to an abundance of wildlife including gopher tortoises, Florida pine snakes, sandhill cranes, bald eagles and migratory wildfowl. Be sure to have your camera readily available to capture the prickly pear cactuses along the preserve’s numerous hiking trails. Umatilla is on the edge of an exciting and adventurous place: the Ocala National Forest. You’ll find great places to see coastal lowlands, swamps, lakes and ponds. There’s plenty of wildlife, so beware. But if you venture in, you’ll explore what Florida was like centuries ago. Another “sweet” place to visit is Sunsational Citrus, which takes visitors to a place and time when citrus production drove Lake County’s economic engine. The company – one of the few remaining packing houses in the county – sells fresh-squeezed orange juice, local honey, jelly and candy. The retail store at Sunsational Citrus also sells Florida wines. Visitors to Umatilla should also visit North Lake Community Park, which features a 1.4-mile loop trail and .75-mile nature trail.

HOWEY-INTHE-HILLS Population: 1,702 Size: 3.7 square miles
When locals think of Howey-in-the-Hills, iconic landmarks such as the Howey Mansion and Mission Inn Resort and Club immediately come to mind. The mansion has been restored to its former glory from the 1920s, when it was built by the town’s founder, William John Howey. In fact, classic architecture of the ‘20s is predominant in the town, which promotes itself as a quiet and safe community focused on family living. Mission Inn Resort continually receives high marks from travelers and locals for its pro-caliber golf courses, fine dining and spa. This rural village is also surrounded by lakes, rolling hills, and the natural beauty of Griffin Waterfront Park and the Sara Maude Mason Nature Preserve. Blevins Patriot Park is a small but idyllic garden spot dedicated in 2017.
The Golden Triangle in Lake County– made up of Eustis, Mount Dora, and Tavares–offers outdoor activities from fishing to boating to flying, and celebrations of holidays and special events at annual festivals. A smaller triangle to the south includes the towns of Astatula, Howey-in-the-Hills, and Yalaha.

ASTATULA Population: 1,921 Size: 3.2 square miles
Touted as the geographic center of Central Florida, Astatula is on the eastern shore of Little Lake Harris, one of Lake County’s finest areas for fishing and boating. Fruitland Park is a peaceful town known for nice neighborhoods featuring older houses and a sprinkling of more modern dwellings. Two of the state park’s trails provide an up-close view of Florida’s natural habitats, including swamp and
sandhill terrain. Visitors may see raccoons, bobcats, squirrels, opossum and hawks. Don’t worry about the sizzling summer heat–Spanish moss-draped oak trees provide adequate shade. LAKE DORA
ith over 1,000 named freshwater lakes, water is our niche. It’s what draws visitors to enjoy water-related activities year-round. Lake County’s gorgeous waterways invite you to explore by pontoon, airboat, canoe, and kayak. Anglers are lured by the idea of catching a trophy bass in Lake County and water skiers come from all over the world to hone their skills. Water also plays a vital role for the 387,914 residents who proudly make their home in Lake County, now the 19th largest county in Florida. The county experienced a growth rate of 2.75% in the past year according to the most recent United States census data. We are “Real Florida. Real Close.” Just 35 minutes outside of Orlando, we are the perfect distance away to enjoy nature and wildlife on serene and relaxing waterway trails that offer canoeists and kayakers easy access to more than 130 miles of scenery from city waterfronts to remote wilderness. “If you want to experience ‘Real Florida. Real Close’ from one place that has everything, consider Tavares downtown waterfront,” says John Drury, city administrator for Tavares, which is also the county seat for Lake County. John is proud his city’s waterfront features three hotels, several restaurants, wine bars, entertainment district and live music, seaplane rides, boat and kayak rentals, old-time New Orleans-style luxury paddlewheel boat excursions on the “Dora Queen,” along with the Dora Canal, which offers a natural boating experience. Branded as “America’s Seaplane City,” Tavares rolls out the welcoming mat to more than 3,000 seaplanes a year, and John was pleased that a Federal Department of Transportation’s statewide economic impact study reveals Tavares has benefitted from a seaplane economic output of $39,349,000. The thrill of seeing and flying in an airplane never gets old for John, and he knows many visitors feel the same way. “The experience of splashing in and out of Lake Dora is exhilarating,” says John, who especially enjoys seeing panoramic views of Lake County from the air. “The flight will remain in your memory forever as a bucket list item worth doing again and again.” Eager to experience a seaplane ride? Jones Brothers Air and Seaplane Adventures, located at 150 E. Ruby St., Tavares, offers several seaplane tours, including a 15-minute flight around several area lakes, a Splash-and-Dash (touch and go on the water), and aerial views of Mount Dora and Tavares. A longer, 35-minute ride over the Harris Chain and River Run allows visitors to see Lake Eustis and the wilderness of Lake Griffin and Ocklawaha River. The pilot will do a THE DORA QUEEN

splash-and-dash on the river while looking for alligators and then head back to Lake Dora and fly low over Lake Harris. A 30-minute Sunset Celebration flight allows guests to enjoy breathtaking sunset views across vast areas of Lakes Harris and Griffin on the way to the wilderness of the Ocklawaha River and Ocala National Forest. Then, the seaplane turns back across Lakes Yale and Eustis in time to fly straight into the sunset across Lake Dora. “Lake County is home to some of the most beautiful sunsets; it’s simply breathtaking to see from the air,” says Peter Closi, president of Jones Brothers Air and Seaplane Adventures. “More than anything else, people really love the water take-offs and landings,” says Peter, adding they also enjoy that seaplanes are able to fly lower than most planes, giving passengers a better birds-eye view of Lake County’s beauty. “At some point during each tour, the pilot will gently land on the water, skim along the water for a bit and then take off again,” he says. “It’s something most people have never experienced in their life and
cannot be compared to any other sort of conventional flying.” Another fun seaplane/water offering for outdoor enthusiasts is a 15- to 20-minute seaplane flight from Lake Dora over Harris Chain of Lakes. After landing on Lake Eustis, the adventure continues with a one-hour guided kayak tour from Adventure Paddle back to Tavares through the beautiful Dora Canal. This activity runs about 1.5 hours. Tavares established its seaplane base in 2010. Jones Brothers, which began at the same time, has grown into an iconic attraction in the heart of “America’s Seaplane City. “ “We are looking forward to the completion of the newly refurbished Tavares Seaplane Base and Marina along our waterfront, which we hope will help attract more visitors and seaplane fly-in events to the downtown Tavares area,” says Peter. John adds that the refurbishing will also include a complete remake of Wooton Wonderland Playground and the children’s Splash Park to make both seaplane and flight themed. THE DORA CANAL
CRUISIN’ “Welcome to the Dora Canal,” Captain Nate Jordan says to visitors aboard Premier Boat Tours’ pontoon as the vessel enters the picturesque waterway that links Lake Dora to Lake Eustis. Nate’s partner for the tour, Captain Bob Bartlett, steers the vessel slowly under a thick canopy of jungle-type greenery in the wetland swamp nestled with giant Cypress trees draped with Spanish moss along both sides of the canal. Nate points to one of the largest Cypress trees and says a research study found it to be 2,250 years old, the oldest tree in the Dora Canal. Passengers also see a wide array of wildlife on the two-hour tour: sunbathing alligators along with a few baby alligators, water snakes, turtles, bald eagles, white egrets and anhinga. This “Real Florida. Real Close” view is one way to enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Passengers have included visitors from all over the world, including China and Australia. “You hear it in the accents,” says Tudor Barratt-Scands, who moved to Lake County from England 10 years ago with his wife Laura and bought the business. “We have a lot of people here from England. At the moment, a lot of people visiting are from other parts of Florida,” says Tudor, adding that some return three or four times with different visitors. DIVE You don’t have to visit the Cayman Islands, Cozumel or the Great Barrier Reef to enjoy an underwater adrenaline rush. Alexander Springs Recreational Area, located in the Ocala National Forest between Astor and Altoona, attracts international divers from Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, and in the United States from as far away as California. Novice and experienced divers alike receive an up close and personal view of bluegill, catfish, turtles, kelp-like vegetation and rock outcroppings. The facility also has canoes, kayaks, camping and picnic areas that are available for all-day rentals. “We have a beautiful spring here that allows scuba dives, and people love it because the visibility is unlimited and it’s comfortable and relaxing,” says Emily Sheffield, gatehouse lead at Alexander Springs, adding the recreational area is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Alexander Springs is touted as a great place for beginning divers to earn their certification because it’s not a dangerous dive, and some senior citizens visit three to four times a week to dive recreationally. Alexander Springs is one of only 27 first-magnitude springs in Florida, meaning that it gushes water from the ground at a rate of 100 cubic feet per second. In addition to diving, families can also swim in the large spring pool, canoe down Alexander Creek, walk along a hiking trail and enjoy an afternoon picnic. The spring remains 72 degrees year-round.

JACK TRAVERS WATERSKI SCHOOL
RIDING Some of the most talented watersport athletes come to Lake County from all over the globe to hone their skills. “About 70% of our clientelle is from outside the country,” says Lelani Travers of Jack Travers Waterski School, located at 20225 County Road 33, Groveland, which opened in 1973. Lelani says the school has welcomed Japanese, Ukrainian, French and Swedish students. “We get people from all over the world,” she says, adding that the school also attracts local youths and people throughout Florida, Mexico, Canada and South America. She’s pleased Jack Travers Waterski School will be the site of the 2021 International Wakeboard Waterski Federation (IWWS) Waterski World Championship in October, with some 250 contestants (and their coaches, managers, etc.) traveling here to compete. “It’s a really huge event and it has only been held in the states twice in 75 years, and we’re excited it will be held here on our property,” she says. The property is home to three man-made lakes and a housing development. “We have families who have bought property, built homes here, and most are second homes, and they come with their kids and their families to enjoy water skiing,” says Lelani. “Some of them are state, regional or national competitors. And in the summer, we run a summer camp and that’s when we get a lot of kids locally and from all over the country that come here just like they would go to any other sports camps.” Lelani says the youngest students are 7 and the oldest skier is 79. Hike, camp and relax while immersing yourself in Lake County’s natural beauty. STORY: JAMES COMBS

TO LAKE COUNTY
Sometimes, visitors to the Sunshine State desire to see the REAL Florida—the one without screaming rollercoasters and crowded, commercialized beaches. With an abundance of hiking trails, Lake County provides tourists with an opportunity to see Real Florida. Real Close. Visitors will be awed by our forests dotted with colorful butterflies, our pristine and untouched lakes, and our subtropical wilderness filled with wildlife. So, what are you waiting for? Put your best foot forward and immerse yourself in Lake County’s naturally invigorating outdoors. Here are some trails you should strongly consider.
Hidden Waters Preserve 2010 Abrams Rd., Eustis
Hidden Waters offers two distinct features you’ll seldom see on any other trails in Florida—a small waterfall and elevation changes. Located on a 90-acre site, Hidden Waters Preserve features a series of short trails that lead past a lake, crystalclear trickling streams and prickly pear cactuses. Though the preserve has two parking lots, consider parking at the trailhead off Country Club Road. You’ll immediately be on Lake Alfred Trail, which has a 105-foot drop over a quarter mile. In Florida, that could be considered a cliff. Once you reach the bottom, you’ll be greeted with a spectacular view of Lake Alfred. This lake is very dynamic, rising during the rainy season and lowering during periods of drought. From the Lake Alfred Trail, you can connect to the Ravine Trail. Follow the soothing sound of running water to one of Florida’s rare natural hidden treasures–a small but spectacular waterfall. Continue ascending the Ravine Trail and stop at one of several overlooks that provide a fantastic view of a sinkhole where groundwater flows down the creek into Lake Alfred. On any given day, hikers may see hawks, gopher tortoises, herons, egrets, raccoons and ducks.
Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead 20700 County Rd, 455, Minneola
Mountaintop views in Florida seem as rare as oceanfront properties in Arizona. However, Green Mountain Scenic Overlook offers a spectacular view of the gentle, rolling hills in South Lake County. The overlook, situated west of Lake Apopka, features a three-story observation tower with a 130-foot-long boardwalk and picnic pavilion. The

tower overlooks the lake’s North Shore Restoration Area from 132 above sea level. From the overlook, hikers can take the switchback trails and begin navigating the trail system that goes along the entire north shore of Lake Apopka. Parts of the trail are shaded by red maples and sweetgum trees. While you’re in the area, you might as well drive to Sugarloaf Mountain Road to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, the highest point in peninsular Florida at 312 feet above sea level. You’ll enjoy panoramic views of the wooded landscape and Lake Apopka.
Lake Griffin State Park
3089 U.S. Hwy. 441, Fruitland Park
Lake Griffin State Park offers a real treat for visitors. It’s an opportunity to see Florida’s second-oldest oak tree, estimated to be between 300 and 500 years old. The tree is home to several species of birds, and historians speculate the oak may have been a landmark for Timucua Native Americans who frequented the area. Two trails give hikers an up-close view of Florida’s natural wildlife and swamp and sandhill terrain. Along the way, visitors may see raccoons, bobcats, squirrels, opossum and hawks. Spanish moss-draped oak trees provide adequate shade. Guided pontoon boat tours of Dead River Marsh, a tributary of Lake Griffin, are another popular attraction at this park. The rides present an opportunity to learn about Lake County’s flora and fauna.
Flat Island Preserve
2301 Owens Rd., Leesburg
Florida is home to the largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S. Perhaps no trail encapsulates a subtropical, deep-woods experience like Flat Island Preserve, home to more than 110 species of plants. The 2,300-acre conservation area known for its lush wilderness is comprised of two upland islands—Flat Island and Magnolia Island. Hikers are immersed into a beautiful world filled with forested wetlands dominated by cypress trees and hardwood forests with oak, magnolia, maple and swaying palm trees. Gaze skyward and you can envision Tarzan swinging wildly overhead. One of the highlights is a 440-foot-long boardwalk that takes hikers to a canal that enters into nearby Lake Denham. The boardwalk is lined by majestic cypress trees and swampland on both sides. The preserve’s wildlife includes wood ducks, ospreys, raccoons and armadillos.

Flat Island Preserve offers three primitive campsites. Visitors may also rent canoes or reserve campsites by making prior arrangements with the Lake County Water Authority.
Crooked River Preserve
11121 Lake Louisa Rd., Clermont
Lake County lives up to its name with a system of waterways unlike anywhere else in the state. Thus, a trip to the 63.4-acre Crooked River Preserve provides hikers with the best of both worlds: an opportunity to explore beautiful terrain and also receive an up-close and personal view of Lake Louisa and Crooked River. The hike begins under a canopy of laurel oaks and eventually leads to the edge of Lake Louisa, where hikers experience Lake County in all its natural beauty. Waves crash against the shoreline. Herons stand statue-like on the bank. Spanish moss hanging off cypress trees blows gently in the breeze as birds chirp in the background. A picnic bench allows you to sit, relax and take it all in. Keep following the trail to the Crooked River, where boaters can be seen navigating the winding waterway. Wildlife here includes woodpeckers, blue jays and warblers. Tourists may also see alligators in their natural habitat. Just be sure to stay a safe distance from Florida’s most popular reptile. Visitors may rent canoes by making prior arrangements with the Lake County Water Authority, 352.324.6141.

FLAT ISLAND PRESERVE

TO LAKE COUNTY
One of the highlights of Sawgrass Island Preserve is the diversity of habitat encountered throughout the trails. Visitors will see a 600-acre sawgrass marsh, a deeply forested area where live oak and magnolia trees provide an overhead canopy, and multiple ponds that attract ring-necked ducks and blue-winged teal. The sawgrass marsh is the largest source of surface water for nearby Lake Yale. In addition, parts of this 1,137-acre preserve border private farmland and pastureland, providing views of grazing cows and horses. Sawgrass Island Preserve is also a popular spot for horseback riders. The preserve contains trails of varying lengths. There are three primitive campsites with a fire pit, picnic table and a post to hang lanterns. They can be reserved through the Lake County Water Authority. Wildlife spotted at Sawgrass Island Preserve include sandhill cranes, gopher tortoises, hawks and deer.
The night sky twinkles with bright stars. The air pulses with the steady rhythm of chirping crickets and croaking bullfrogs. Golden flames leap from the fire. Indeed, few activities help us escape the everyday hustle and bustle like camping. Swapping stories and roasting marshmallows over a campfire is a great way to spend quality time with family and friends. Fortunately, Lake County offers some wonderful camping opportunities. So unplug your computer, unplug your cell phone … and just … unplug. Consider visiting these campgrounds.
Alexander Springs Recreation Area 49525 County Rd. 445, Altoona
Beautiful scenery and abundant water await campers at Alexander Springs. A shaded campground with 67 units can accommodate recreation vehicles up to 35 feet long, as well as tents. Bathhouses provide nice warm showers. Crystal-clear Alexander Springs is one of only 27 first-magnitude springs in Florida, that gushes 100 gallons of water per cubic second from under the ground. Water temperature remains 72 degrees year-round. This is a popular destination for swimmers, snorkelers and scuba divers.
Wekiva Falls RV Resort
30700 Wekiva River Rd., Sorrento
Wekiva Falls RV Resort offers 800 RV sites, as well as 100 tent sites, including primitive camping along the water and on a nature trail. Tent sites come with a picnic table. Campers will enjoy the resort’s lagoonstyle swimming area. It features both a 40-foot cement waterfall—standing directly under it is an excellent way to beat the summer heat—and dual tube slides for children. The swimming area is also a great place to float lazily on a tube or play catch with a waterproof ball. The slightly hilly shoreline gives guests an opportunity to catch some rays and improve their tans.
