The business of succeeding
Style’s annual 40 Under 40 recognizes emerging men and women making significant contributions in business and their communities as they demonstrate outstanding leadership, initiative, and dedication in varied careers.
COMPILED: SHAENA LONG EDITED: JAMES COMBS, GARY CORSAIR, ROXANNE BROWNYouth, lead the way
his month’s issue takes me down memory lane.
In my 20s and 30s, I was an ambitious, determined, go-getter. I started my career in newspaper sales before discovering my true passion as a magazine salesperson.
I formed meaningful, longlasting relationships. I created opportunities for businesspeople. I learned to be an optimist by closing deals others deemed impossible. I learned that in sales the only limits are self-imposed.
In 2008, the years of hard work paid big dividends and my dream career became reality when I became publisher of Healthy Living magazine. I’m still living that dream today. Today, I am publisher of Lake and Sumter Style, the magazine I helped launch as a salesperson in 2004.
In this issue, we present our annual “40 Under 40” list. For me, it’s exciting because I see a younger version of myself in these young whippersnappers. They’re con dent. They’re ambitious. They maintain a cando attitude. They create and seize opportunities. They have that special spark that all successful businesspeople share.
It’s not just their success that makes me proud. I’m equally thrilled that many are lifelong residents of Lake and Sumter counties who decided to launch their companies or seek employment in their hometowns. Our communities become much stronger and prosperous when we can retain homegrown talent.
I hope that our “40 Under 40” feature provides inspiration and additional motivation for high school and college students to achieve their dreams. If your hearts are in something then by all means, pursue it. Ignore doubters and naysayers. Don’t take no for an answer. Value mentoring and professional development opportunities that arise. Look at adversity as a chance to foster your strengths and your growth.
In closing, I would like to wish everybody a very happy 2023. Just typing that makes me realize how fast time goes. It seems like yesterday when 2000 rolled around and we were waiting to see if the technology apocalypse known as Y2K would materialize. Thankfully, it never did. Take care, and I will see you next month.

Dr. Fernando Serra, MD, FACSMindfulness A Calm Oasis:
f you’ve ever wanted to catch your breath and clear your head, mindfulness can help. Mindfulness techniques ground us and help us become more resilient to life’s challenges.
Amy Roberts, LCSW and Mindfulness Meditation Teacher at the Robert Boisonneault Oncology Institute, says that developing a beginner’s mind is key. “It’s living in the moment and being aware of the moment you’re in,” she explains. “Being aware of your reactions, your thoughts, your body, but in a way that’s patient and trusting. A childlike curiosity.”
Being non-judgmental is central to mindfulness. “You’re noticing you’re having some reactions or some feelings, and going, ‘Huh. That’s interesting,’ Roberts says. “Not judging it as right or wrong, or good or bad, but being curious about your feelings, emotions, or
responses. It’s really extending a kindness inward, but also to those around you.”
Roberts points to studies showing that mindfulness improves memory and concentration. Mindfulness can also decrease stress, anxiety, and depression, while improving quality of life and one’s ability to cope. Citing an American Society of Clinical Oncology study, she says, “After an 8-week course, these concepts, tools, and mindset that you’re learning stay with you. The skills you learn show long-term improvement. It’s not just a temporary release.”
Roberts offers Friday meditation sessions on Zoom and will give a weekly mindfulness class starting on Tuesday, January 17. Both are free, but pre-registration is required for the class. To learn more about mindfulness programs at RBOI, call 352-732-0277
Growing a Positive Experience
Growing a Positive Experience expands our daily moments of happiness. These moments can include a child’s greeting, sounds in nature, a stranger holding a door open, and more. Growing them means using all our senses to absorb the experience. “This is something you’re doing anyway throughout the day,” Roberts says. “But instead of pushing it aside, you’re learning to let it in and let it really resonate with you.”

The Body Scan
The Body Scan slows down the nervous system, eases the mind, and helps us tune into our senses. You can access Amy Roberts’ body scan video at any time on RBOI’s guided meditation page, RBOI.com, under the “Cancer Support” tab.
Keeping a Gratitude Journal
Keeping a Gratitude Journal helps provide balance for when times are tough. “Every morning or evening, write down a few things that happened that day or that you have that day that you’re grateful for,” Roberts says. It can be something simple like, “I really love my hair color today,” or, “I have a roof over my head.” Then think about why you are grateful for those things and what they mean to you. Gratitude doesn’t mean ignoring what is difficult in life. Rather, it can help provide an emotional anchor for when life feels overwhelming.

Patience and empathy are key
“If you decide you want to start a practice and you forget a day or a week, just start again,” Roberts advises. “Every time you restart, you’re rewiring your brain and you’re practicing it all over again. So just be really sweet and kind to yourself.”

SUPER PERFORMANCES
The Super Bowl was very super indeed for two local athletes who made the most of their opportunity to play on football’s biggest stage. In Super Bowl XXXV, 1994 Wildwood High School graduate Ron Dixon returned a kicko 97 yards for the New York Giants’ only touchdown. Incredibly, Dixon also had a 97-yard kicko return in the Wild Card game in the 2000 postseason. Dixon’s two kicko returns for touchdowns set an NFL record for the most kicko returns for a touchdown in a postseason campaign. In Super Bowl 50, 2008 Leesburg High School graduate linebacker Danny Trevathan recovered two fumbles and led the Denver Broncos with eight tackles.
BE A ROLE MODEL
January is National Mentoring Month, the perfect time for local adults to serve as mentors through Take Stock in Children, an organization that o ers collegiate scholarships to low-income youth. The program pairs students with mentors who help guide them to academic success and completion of high school. For more information, call 352.787.6576.
DID YOU KNOW?
Most Lake Countians are familiar with AdventHealth Waterman, UF Health Leesburg Hospital, and South Lake Hospital. However, for 66 years, a hospital speci cally for children existed in Umatilla. The Florida State Elks Association opened the Harry-Anna Home for Crippled Children in 1933. Children with orthopedic diseases and disabilities came to the hospital to undergo rehabilitation and were treated at no cost for families. The unique hospital closed in 1999 due to medical advances.
KINDNESS: IT’S IN OUR BLOOD
Let your goodwill extend beyond the holidays during National Blood Donor Month in January. According to the American Red Cross, someone needs blood every two seconds due to automobile accidents, cancer, surgery, burns, and other medical situations. You can donate at OneBlood, which has locations in Lady Lake, Leesburg, and Clermont.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Food pantries are usually well stocked for the holidays, but the need exists all year. In some cases, it can take as little as $10 to feed a family of four for three days. Two non-pro ts locally take non-perishable food items and toiletries year-round and serve a high number of families each month. Lake Cares Inc. in Mount Dora and the Neighborhood Center of South Lake in Groveland both need your help. For information on what’s needed and how to help, call 352.383.0100 (Lake Cares) or 352.429.1200 (Neighborhood Center).
THOUGHT PROCESS
Thinking about a New Year’s resolution? Why not commit to journaling, the habit of writing thoughts and feelings down to help you understand them more clearly? Many online resources contend that journaling can help you manage anxiety, reduce stress and cope with depression. It can also improve your mood and control symptoms by helping you prioritize problems, address fears and concerns, track thoughts and triggers, identify negative feelings, and promote more positive self-talk.

When I grow up, I want to be: Maybe a police officer, mega truck racer and still run my own business, like a football or basketball team.
My inspiration is: My Grandma Maggie and my Grandpa Jim. They have made a lot of my dreams come true and they help me as much as possible. Eustis Police Chief Capri is also inspiring because he does a lot for everyone, which is something I like to do.
I want my message to be: Always try your best and never give up. It’s out there, you just have to go get it.

My greatest quality is: My determination. I will never give up on what I want and my goals. I may have setbacks, but I’m able to overcome them and use what I’ve learned from those obstacles to push me towards achievement.
I started my own business when: I wanted to create a product that was di erent and artsy, and that’s how I came across polymer clay earrings. I have been teaching myself how to not only create earrings, but also manage my time and own a business as a teen. I have had some amazing opportunities with Southern Sadie’s Jewelry and I hope to continue
Topping my playlist is: I truly love listening to gospel music, and a song that’s on repeat right now is called ‘Gratitude’ by Brandon Lake.

ot air balloons have been a huge part of Art Hodge’s life for more than 30 years.
Art started crewing for a friend in Michigan while in college, and because his pal couldn’t
“To be quite honest, I didn’t know if I really wanted to go for a ride,” Art says with a chuckle.
After graduating, Art became a physical education teacher, but continued crewing. When his friend vowed to teach him the ropes, there was no turning back.
In 1985, Art secured his private pilot’s license, and later that year, his commercial license. The two also began piloting for RE/MAX in the Detroit Metro area—a gig that
After that, Art worked for Renaissance Balloons, but upon retiring from teaching, moved to The Villages and left ballooning behind.
“I no longer had balloon equipment of my own since ying for RE/MAX, so I thought, ‘This is it. I’m done,’” says Art.
Fast forward about 10 years to May 2021 when a phone call from his son Johnny (also a hot air balloon pilot) changed everything. Art agreed to serve as Johnny’s crew chief for a show in Finley, Ohio. And when he was able to use his tethering and wind expertise to guide Johnny through bad weather, the piloting bug bit him again.
“I’ve got some ballooning still left in me,” Art thought, before reinstating his license.
In October 2022, he accompanied Johnny to New Mexico for the 50-year
Art calls the event a pilot’s dream, primarily because of the special shaped balloons, plus the challenge of steering them.
In Albuquerque, the two ew alongside one another for the rst time. Art piloted ‘Duma the Cheetah’ and Johnny manned ‘Splash the Penguin.’
“It was a very special day I’ll never forget,” Art says.
Today, Art, 70, is counting the days to his 10-year anniversary as a gate attendant so he can retire and spend more time with his girlfriend … and in the air.
He’ll o er occasional paid rides to support his hobby, but for the most part, ballooning is something he does for the sheer love of it.
Granted, there are risks. Art says there are power lines and trees to contend with, you never know where exactly you’ll land, and that each landing is somewhat of a controlled crash.
“Ballooning becomes a way of life and questions like, ‘What’s the weather?’ and ‘When can I y again?’ are always on your mind,” Art says. “It’s relaxing, and it’s hard work, but I enjoy the interaction with people and can’t wait to devote more time to it.”
these from friends, co-workers and sometimes, even strangers. It can be disheartening to realize that observers make assumptions about our emotions and state of mind based on appearance.
Let’s be honest. Age, life experiences and sun exposure all combine to leave their mark on our faces as the years pass. Lines, wrinkles, sagging and thinning skin can make us look older, tired, and even appear sad or grumpy when we’re not.
When your expression doesn’t match how you feel inside, the trusted team of facial rejuvenation experts at ImageLift can help you turn the page.

Less Can Be More
With offices in The Villages and Tampa, ImageLift is a center of excellence that specializes only in procedures of the face and neck. The practice offers the most up-to-date and innovative technology in the world of facial rejuvenation, both surgical and non-surgical.
The team of expert providers includes Dr. Richard Castellano, (an awardwinning and recognized Castle Connolly Top Doctor), medical aestheticians, master injectors, and support staff.
Patients choose ImageLift because they want safe, natural looking results that last.
Meet the doctor
A Florida native, Dr. Richard Castellano is a skilled facial rejuvenation artist and the Founder and Medical Director of ImageLift™. He specializes in facelift,
laser, and filler techniques. His practice provides patients with the highest level of excellence in the industry, as well as optimal medical care.
“Plastic surgery has evolved. At ImageLift, we pride ourselves in offering the latest procedures and technologies that are tried and true, rather than relying on traditional treatments that may be outdated,” says Dr. Rich.
Having performed over 25,000 surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures, Dr. Rich is one of the most experienced facial plastic surgeons practicing in the U.S.
His own life history has influenced how he approaches medicine and works with patients.
“As a child, I faced significant health challenges,” recalls Dr. Rich. “The doctors I saw were always kind and compassionate, and they inspired me to become a physician.”
Why the frown, is something wrong? You look tired, are you not sleeping well?
Early in his career, a prominent surgeon inspired him to create his own center focused on natural-looking results using minimally invasive procedures and treatments.
“I will never forget a national facial plastic surgery meeting that I attended where one of the former presidents of our academy spoke about his practice of 30-plus years,” recalls Dr. Rich. “He was a distinguished gentleman and the epitome of poise. He discussed what he would do differently if he had to do it all over again.”
When this prominent surgeon started his practice, it was customary in the plastic surgery culture to offer aggressive cosmetic procedures that required more recovery time and had the potential for dramatic improvement. Dr. Rich notes that ego can definitely play a role for some surgeons, who will push the envelope in an attempt to attain bigger and better results--even if it puts their patients at risk, requires more recovery, and possibly leads to an unnatural result.
“He went on to say, ‘In my experience performing both aggressive and minimally invasive surgeries, I have found that when it comes to cosmetic procedures, less can be more. Patients really don’t want to put their lives on hold for an extended recovery period or suffer potential complications.’”
This totally resonated with Dr. Rich. Thousands of patients and procedures later, ImageLift’s success reflects this “less can be more” approach.
Dr. Rich has made it his mission to deliver results that leave his patients feeling and looking younger. The goal is always a natural look.
When Dr. Rich began seeing patients in The Villages in 2009, he was determined to provide minimally invasive, office-based techniques and treatments in facial plastic surgery.
“With two board certifications and more than 17 years mastering minimally invasive facial procedures, I’ve been able to provide remarkable results while avoiding the pitfalls of traditional plastic surgery procedures,” he notes.
“After 4,000-plus facelifts and 20,000-plus syringes of injectables, you get the hang of it. Most plastic surgeons won’t reach those numbers in their lifetime. I am devoted to my craft and my patients and have developed the experience and artistry required to provide maximum results while utilizing minimally invasive techniques.”
Natural-looking results
Dr. Rich finds that the top concern of patients is fear of ending up with unnatural-looking results.
The first step is always educating patients about their best options. Every individual is unique, which means recommendations will vary. There is never a one-size-fits-all approach at ImageLift. Instead, the goal is to create a customized approach that suits each patient’s goals, anatomy, budget, and desired recovery time.
“We have a proven process that guarantees you will look natural. Your family and friends will not be able to figure out what treatments you had. Our goal is to help patients obtain a more youthful appearance that looks natural,” explains Dr. Rich.
The highest praise is hearing patients say, “I still look like myself, only better!”
“My experience at ImageLift was amazing! I had the mid-lift and was very nervous, but when I arrived for my procedure, I was met by the BEST staff I have ever met. I felt so comfortable and ready to take on this new adventure of mine,” says patient Joyce H.
“Dr. Rich has truly been gifted with his hands and mind, and on top of that, the Lord gave him an amazing heart. He is very compassionate and really cares about his patients. The night of the procedure, Dr. Rich himself called to check on us. I’m one week in and am already so happy with his work.”
Array of services
At ImageLift, the most popular procedures are the ImageLift Facelifts done under local anesthesia, permanent and temporary facial fillers, and laser treatments.
Dr. Rich and his team take pride in restoring each patient's unique beauty rather than augmenting their appearance. This is achieved through minimally invasive treatments that offer less downtime, faster recovery, and safer approaches to anti-aging.
In addition, the practice is part of a select group of injectors that offers permanent filler, which requires a high level of skill and expertise.
About 85 percent of patients opt for both non-surgical and surgical treatments.
“Fillers do a great job, but they do not give the same results as a lift or laser treatment. With lifting or laser, we get wonderful results; we can do even better when we combine,” explains Dr. Rich.
Combination treatments allow patients to receive a customized plan catered to their goals and budget. Most importantly, it ensures natural results. As Dr. Rich emphasizes, it is always better to do less than go too far.
Combination treatment offers optimal results. If a patient is only considering one treatment, a lift or laser procedure will give the best results. Fillers are frequently the choice of patients seeking best results without any downtime.
“Dr. Rich Castellano is a trusted doctor with great talent. His knowledge of the face as an artist is to make your greatest asset become more beautiful. I have been going to him since 2016. I would choose no other, knowing I am in safe hands. I maintain my face with the fillers,” says patient Arlana D.
What is the ImageLift Facelift?
“People are living longer, and everyone wants to look their best. Our ImageLift Facelift is the best way to lift the neck and the jawline, and requires no general anesthesia,” says Dr. Rich.
“Patients really don’t want to put their lives on hold for an extended recovery period or suffer potential complications. Plastic surgery has evolved, and ImageLift is an example of what is possible with today’s technology,” he adds. “At ImageLift, we use gentle numbing and relaxing medication to reduce risk, lessen recovery time and keep our patients from going ‘too far’ and looking unnatural.”
This signature process is a minimally invasive face lifting procedure. Unlike traditional facelifts that require hospitalization and general anesthesia, the ImageLift Facelift is performed in the office under local anesthesia
The ImageLift Team
combined with relaxation medication. Patient safety, comfort and satisfaction are top priorities.
Patients appreciate that they don’t have to “go under” and don’t have to worry about lengthy post-procedure recovery times. What a relief to know it’s possible to have a life-enhancing procedure and go home the same day!
The ImageLift Facelift provides impressive natural-looking results. Best of all, the procedure is offered in three levels of results.
THE MINI-IMAGELIFT is an excellent option for patients looking for improvement in their lower face (jowls, smile lines, jawline). The procedure is performed by tightening the muscle and eliminating sagging skin on the lower face. Laser Lipolysis provides internal tightening of facial tissues to provide a sculpted and lifted appearance. The result is a softening of jowls, smile lines, and contouring of the jawline. Patients can expect a social downtime of just 4 to 7 days.
THE MID-IMAGELIFT offers a greater degree of tightening and addresses the lower face, jawline and neck bands. The Mid-ImageLift also tightens the skin around the middle of the neck, where we see sagging or drooping of the muscle bands, which are the platysma muscles. This procedure is ideal for patients seeking improvement from significant aging changes and those interested in further preventing future aging changes.
The Mid-ImageLift tightens in two directions; the skin is pulled back towards the ears and towards the midline of the neck, providing a more significant result as compared to the Mini-ImageLift. The result is a softening of jowls, smile lines, contouring of the jawline, and improvement of the upper neck, including the platysma bands. Patients can expect a social downtime of 7 to 10 days.
THE IMAGELIFT is the signature procedure with the most complete results for lower face, mid-face, and neck
rejuvenation. This is Dr. Rich’s “Gold Standard” for facelifting procedures.
A small incision is made along the tragus of the ear following the natural curvature of this area. The incision will run under the earlobe and behind the ear, to ensure minimal visibility of the scar once fully healed. Once the incision is made, the skin is pulled taught from ear to ear to lift the face. Through the use of Laser Lipolysis, the internal facial tissues are tightened to strengthen the muscle, providing a further sculpted and lifted appearance. Additionally, the signature ImageLift provides a comprehensive treatment of the platysma bands (neck bands). The result is overall tightening and sculpting of the lower and mid-face, as well as a complete rejuvenation of the neck. The ImageLift provides the most complete treatment for aging changes, with beautifully natural results. Patients can expect a social downtime of 7 to 10 days.
In addition to ImageLift Facelifts, specialty surgical services include:
Upper Blepharoplasty
Lower Blepharoplasty
Lower Eye Pinch
Combination Eye Pinch (upper and lower)
Canthoplasty Otoplasty
“Dr. Rich is a phenomenal doctor, a true perfectionist. His entire staff is a pleasure to speak to. Everyone is there to help you through your process answering all your questions, and the office is so very clean,” says patient Linda C. “I had the mid lift done. I am so pleased with my results.”
Facial fillers
Fine lines, wrinkles and facial hollows are among the most common signs of aging. These changes in appearance result from loss of volume and thinning of facial tissues.
Facial fillers (dermal fillers) are injected beneath the skin to replace lost volume
and provide a smoother, more youthful appearance. They can also soften creases, and help sculpt and enhance facial features, including the jawline, lips, under eye area and more.
A huge perk of facial fillers is that they provide immediate results and require no downtime or recovery.
ImageLift offers temporary, semipermanent, and permanent facial fillers. Consultation will help determine which is best for you.
Temporary fillers typically last between 6 to 18 months, depending on your body’s ability to retain the product.
Semi-permanent fillers generally last between 2 to 4 years.
Permanent fillers aren’t absorbed by the body over time, so they maintain continued support.
To manage any discomfort involved with the injection of facial fillers, ImageLift offers local anesthetic (lidocaine), numbing cream (topical), relaxation medication, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and more.
Skilled application
Janisse Watkins, AGPN-C, is a key member of the ImageLift team in The Villages practice. She is a Master Injector of dermal fillers and wrinkle relaxers and an expert in laser skin rejuvenation.
Getting to know her patients and understanding their individual goals is an essential part of Janisse’s work. This personal connection helps her provide results that boost a patient’s confidence while addressing their concerns.
Among the most popular treatments Janisse provides are lip filler and jawline contouring. Her signature hand rejuvenation treatment is another favorite of many patients.
Hands can often give away our age, but Janisse has mastered the skillful placement of filler that leaves patients marveling at the smoother, more youthful appearance of their hands after treatment.
Non-surgical treatments
Among other non-surgical treatments provided at ImageLift are wrinkle relaxer injections and laser treatments. Additional specialty nonsurgical services include:
Liquid Rhinoplasty
Facial Balancing Packages
Nefertiti Lift
Lip Flip
Ear Gauge Repair
Ear Hole Repair
Skin Tag Removal
Informed decisions
Knowledge is power. That’s why consultations are required for all non-surgical and surgical services at ImageLift.
A consultation is equal parts interview and learning experience. It allows the patient to see the possibilities of what cosmetic treatments can achieve for them.
It’s a two-way conversation that should help potential patients answer three big questions:
1 Will cosmetic treatments help me achieve my goals?
2 If so, which treatment(s) or procedures(s) are appropriate?
3 When and how can I begin my cosmetic journey?
ImageLift’s comprehensive consultations answer these questions and allow you the opportunity to learn more about the cosmetic industry.
Learn more about the consultation process at https://www.ImageLift.com/ book-your-consultation/
Many patients report that they felt confident choosing ImageLift after just one visit to the office. Meeting the team, having a consultation, and reviewing the many before and after photos often provides all the clarity and reassurance a patient is seeking.
In fact, after one consultation at ImageLift, patients usually cancel any other appointments they may have scheduled.
Potential patients find the live patient treatment videos and testimonials extremely helpful. After all, the most important decision anyone can make in choosing a cosmetic
treatment is which artist/surgeon to use.
“As a center of aesthetic excellence, we place education, safety, and quality results at the heart of our practice,” says Dr. Rich.
During consultation and one-on-one sessions with Dr. Rich, patients learn the ABCs of plastic surgery, which is the best tool for approaching all cosmetic decisions.

HOW I GOT INTO MY CAREER: I’ve always loved to write, but when I was younger, I was very shy. I thought journalism would allow me to hone my writing skills plus force me to get more comfortable talking to people, and it has. WHAT MAKES ME PASSIONATE ABOUT MY CAREER: I truly believe journalism is crucial for a healthy society. I also love people, so being able to tell others’ stories has been an immense privilege. Administratively, I enjoy managing and helping people identify/reach their goals. I consider their successes mine, too.
MY ADVICE FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION: my job. It’s stimulating, fulfilling and fun. But it does not completely define me. WHAT FUELS MY CAREER PASSION: enjoy coming to work to make a difference, not only for our community and our patients, but for all our hard-working healthcare professionals. Building relationships with my team and seeing change happen keeps me motivated about what I do.
MY GREATEST CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENT: The design and implementation of a clinic located within the emergency departments I was working in at the time that provided monoclonal antibody/IV therapy for very sick COVID patients during the pandemic. With this treatment, we were able to keep many patients out of the hospital and safely at home, which made space for the facility to care for those who needed admission.
LIFE AFTER 40: My biggest priority will continue to be my family. First and foremost, I want to make sure my children grow up happy and know that they are supported in whatever they do. Jobwise, I feel like the sky is the limit. I love my UF family and would love to grow and someday expand my role within the organization.

“My husband had a drug addiction problem and got sentenced to prison in August 2020. I was determined to lose weight. I wanted to look good for my husband, for myself, and to be healthy for work,” says Taylor, 27.
Adding to her concerns was the fact that cardiac and health issues run in her family.
“My mom had her rst major heart attack at 38 and my sister got a pacemaker at 32,” Taylor says.
“I’d struggled with weight my whole life. After I had my baby in October 2018, I was in deep depression. I ‘ate my feelings’ and gained almost 100 pounds,” recalls the 2013 Leesburg High School graduate who is an o cer at the Federal Corrections Complex in Coleman. That wasn’t her only challenge. Her husband Joshua Mitchell was
Determined to change her destiny, Taylor—in July 2020—began working out with personal trainer Tyrell Rachel at In nity Fitness in Fruitland Park.
“Tyrell told me I had to change the narrative if I wanted to not have the same issues as my family. I want to be as healthy as I can,” says Taylor, who began working out faithfully and signi cantly changed her diet.
Over a period of 18 months, Taylor lost 52 pounds, dropping from a
size 24 down to a size 10.
“I didn’t see progress until a few months in, but once I saw pounds come down, I got serious,” she says. “Tyrell is super proud of me and always gives me great words of advice.”
Taylor usually works out ve days a week. She added running to her routine to prepare for an obstacle course challenge required by her employer.
Since her husband’s release, Taylor says he’s had a good support system helping him in recovery, and the couple can now work together on themselves.

Age: It’s just a number
Exercise benefits a body whether you’re 19 or 99.
STORY: RICHARD T. BOSSHARDT, MD, FACSt’s never too late” is a common cliché, but it isn’t quite true. Especially when it comes to exercise.
Is it ever too late to start exercising? That’s the question I am going to discuss. Perhaps the rst question to answer is, “Why exercise at all?” I could list references for what I am about to say, but they would ll this page. Indeed, they would ll this magazine, and then some.
The data is irrefutable. If there is one thing that rises above all–a true magic bullet if you will–it is that exercise improves your chances of a long, healthy, happy life.
Simply put, exercise bene ts everything. Weight loss? Blood
pressure? Risk of heart attack and stroke? Mood? Depression and anxiety? Stress? Sleep? Memory and intellect? All benefit from a program of regular exercise. And I could go on and on.
So how much exercise should you do? Studies support a minimum of 150 minutes to 300 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week.
What constitutes moderate? That’s when you can still speak in complete sentences while exercising. Examples: walking at 3 mph, bicycling at less than 10 mph, and playing doubles tennis. Vigorous exercise would be anything where you cannot say more than a few words without pausing for a breath.
What type of exercise should you do? What you do is not as
important as just doing something. Moving is better than not moving.
That said, it is best to exercise in a way that provides bene ts to cardiovascular health, strength, and exibility. A good example would be to combine walking, jogging, or cycling with gym workouts that include resistance or weight work and stretching. Variety also makes exercise more interesting and enjoyable.
Now back to when to start. Unless you have one foot in the grave or are in such extremis that any exertion poses a serious threat, you can start an exercise program and derive bene ts from it right now.
Many successful older athletes who function at a high level credit starting an exercise routine late in life. So, check with your doctor and get started!

RICHARD T. BOSSHARDT, MDFinding the right doctor is essential to good health. The 2022 Health Pros Guide is designed to help make that decision easier. Categorized by Practice, Procedure, and Profile, it’s an easy-to-use directory of the best health-care providers in their field.
Village Heart & Vein
Elite cardiac care you can rely on
n a world tainted by confusion and distrust, that’s the last scenario anyone wants to encounter when facing health concerns. Especially when your heart is part of the equation.
Fortunately, the experienced full-service cardiology team at Village Heart and Vein Center understands how important it is for patients to have full trust and confidence in their cardiac care providers.
After Dr. Georg Couturier founded Village Heart and Vein in 2011, he was determined to assemble a skilled team of doctors that covered the whole spectrum of cardiology. That’s exactly what he has done.
Village Heart and Vein grew quickly with the community, becoming a trusted resource for both prevention and treatment, thanks to its wide range of cardiac expertise. Services include all areas of cardiology, electrophysiology and vascular disease.
Dr. Couturier is an award-winning
could access the highest level of care— whether at his own hands or through another doctor in the practice.
As a collaborative practice, Village Heart and Vein combines the talents of six doctors. The team also includes nurse practitioners and physician assistants who work hand-in-hand with the cardiologists to serve their patients.
“We take a comprehensive approach to cardiology. We’re able to take care of all the functionalities of the heart--all the problems and conditions the heart can create, along with vascular and arterial needs,” notes Dr. Couturier.
Having this broad skill set available under one roof means patients can rely on Village Heart and Vein whatever their cardiac needs.
Whether a patient is dealing with high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat or abnormal heart rhythm, heart valve disorder, peripheral artery disease, varicose veins, or any other condition that impacts the heart, Village Heart and Vein can competently treat any and all cardiac concerns, including preventative care.
PATIENT-CENTERED
A positive outcome starts and ends with the patient. The success rate increases when a patient fully
understands the procedure, medication and treatment plan.
“Patient care is more than the knowledge of the doctor,” says Dr. Couturier.
He explains that beyond the doctor’s credentials and skill, a viable care plan requires the physicians and patients to share knowledge and work together. This is part of the “teamwork approach” the practice prides itself on providing.
In addition to expert medical care, the entire staff at Village Heart and Vein makes it a priority to build relationships with their patients. This includes taking the time to explain procedure details and to answer questions, assuring that patients feel they are an integral part of the entire process.
“We don’t take the approach of dictating to a patient what has to be done. We want to make sure our patients have the knowledge base they need to make informed decisions without relying on Google,” explains Robert Howard, Practice Administrator. “We believe that having an advocate on your side to help you make good decisions is the best possible situation.”
Patients like Ken Thompson have experienced this firsthand.
“The people that are trying to resolve my condition made me feel like I was the

only person they had to see that day. Very patient, kind and understanding,” says Thompson. “If someone were going to make a video to train new doctors and staff on how to treat new patients, they should have used my visit.”
It’s one thing to have impeccable credentials and the most modern tools at their disposal. But it’s another thing altogether to have doctors who are approachable and willing to spend adequate time with their patients, talking with them, not down to them.
“The staff and doctor were amazing. They made me feel comfortable and relaxed, as I was already stressed about having to see a cardiologist,” says patient Fred Waters. “The doctor took the time to really explain things and outlined her treatment plan very clearly.”
“Having the patient involved in their care means you get a better outcome,” notes Dr. Vatsal Inamdar, an electrophysiologist with Village Heart and Vein. “For me, it is essential to explain their condition, help them understand what is happening to them, and form a solution or resolution to their problems.”
NEXT-LEVEL CARE
Village Heart and Vein offers a balanced approach that is progressive
without being aggressive. Technology and state-of-the-art equipment combine with some of the best minds and talents in the world of cardiology.
“We’re well rounded in that we cover all bases of cardiology, and we cover them well. Our doctors are very forward-thinking and up to date with the latest techniques and tools,” says Robert Howard.
The practice utilizes the latest technology and innovations. Every doctor and provider are focused on each patient’s individual needs.
“We continue to innovate, working with leaders in the industry to come up with new processes and procedures,” adds Robert Howard.
For example, Village Heart and Vein currently has multiple ongoing clinical trials for medication. The practice routinely works with manufacturers on new instruments in order to improve procedures and lead to better patient outcomes.
Even though Village Heart and Vein is dedicated to cardiology, the practice team is fully aware that their patients may have other health concerns or comorbidities. In these cases, it’s important to work with their primary physicians to ensure that cardiac
procedures or medications don’t conflict with any other physical issues the patient may be dealing with.
OUTPATIENT OPTION
For many people, the last few years have understandably increased their anxiety about having a hospital stay.
Patients of Village Heart and Vein can rest assured that this can typically be avoided, thanks to the practice’s partnership with Outpatient Surgery Center of Central Florida. The ultramodern facility is conveniently located in Wildwood and enables patients to have procedures done onsite at this outpatient cardiac surgical center instead of being admitted to a hospital.
Not only is the surgery center equipped with the latest technology and finest equipment, it is an accredited facility with accredited cardiologists.
Cardiac procedures can be done here in a highly professional setting that is more personal, safer and also, less expensive. It’s a clear advantage that brings peace of mind to both patients and their families.
Among the many procedures performed in the outpatient surgical center are heart catheterization, pacemaker implants, stenting of the

The 411 on OTC hearing aids
Lake ENT’s hearing aid and audiology specialists clear up what you may have heard about hearing aids
any adults have hearing loss which affects their ability to communicate with the ones they love and ultimately affects their quality of life. Hearing loss becomes increasingly common with age with more than half of the population over the age of 70 exhibiting hearing loss that can interfere with daily communication. And yet, the average individual does not consider hearing amplification for 5-6 years after becoming aware of their hearing difficulty. This is a very unfortunate dilemma considering that the use of hearing aids can not only improve your hearing but can also have longterm positive effects on overall health, lifestyle, relationships, and well-being.
Several factors contribute to the lack of hearing aid use including denial, vanity, confusion, the cost and access to them. The Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act of 2017 was developed to enable adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss access to hearing aids Over-the-Counter (OTC) without being seen by a healthcare practitioner.
Even though this provides easy access to hearing aids, individuals with hearing difficulties will benefit greatly
from professional guidance in selecting hearing amplification as opposed to a low-priced OTC device. Think of it in terms of inexpensive reader glasses you buy off the rack versus prescription glasses that have been specifically tailored to your vision needs.
Many factors can contribute to hearing loss and a professional evaluation will determine the degree and any underlying medical conditions. At Lake Ear, Nose, Throat and Facial Plastic Surgery we have Doctors of Audiology, Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialists, Physicians, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners trained in the evaluation and treatment of hearing loss. Once your type and degree of hearing loss is
determined, our team will recommend hearing amplification specific to you based on your hearing needs, goals, lifestyle, and budget. Our team will also assist you in checking for any possible insurance coverage. While hearing aids may seem expensive, the average person uses a set of hearing aids for 5-7 years, making the annual cost analysis very comparable to OTC. Prescription hearing aids usually have a much better warranty and service compared to OTC devices. The most successful hearing aid users initially work closely with us for 2-3 office visits as we adjust your hearing aids and then continue long-term maintenance visits so that your prescription hearing aids lead to a very successful outcome.

Doctors at The Main Street Dentists in Leesburg take pride in putting their money where their mouth is.
he Main Street Dentists, located at 606 West Magnolia Street in a beautifully renovated historic building in downtown Leesburg, is committed to treating their patients’ teeth and overall oral health care as if they are a beloved member of their own family.
The concept is one Drs. Jon and Marja Mehr never wavered from, so when they decided to step back slightly in preparation for their eventual retirement, the duo made sure their successor’s vision for the practice was a match.
Since then, Dr. Stephen George, the office’s newest dentist and owner, has demonstrated just how intent he is on keeping that legacy alive.
“I would emphasize that the way they built the practice, the way they treat their patients, how they avoid aggressive treatments, and how the incorporate patient’s desires and their own feelings of dentistry when developing treatment plans, is very compatible with my own treatment philosophies,” Dr. George says of Drs. Jon and Marja Mehr. “The ongoing transition has been a very smooth and pleasurable experience for me, for them, for our patients and for our staff.”
The Main Street Dentists is a comprehensive general dentistry practice with a focus on implant and cosmetic dentistry for patients of every age.
Services include cleanings, composite fillings, veneers, CEREC, same day crowns, bridges, Invisalign, Sure Smile, and teeth whitening, along with natural-looking dentures and partials.
Dr. George says all staff are trained on the most modern, state-of-the-art equipment and emphasizes that he does most of his own lab work in-house, which for patients, translates to the healthiest of mouths in the quickest amount of time possible.
Additionally, Dr. George, like the other doctors, says he takes pride in highly aesthetic outcomes.

cart, I would have to stop because the pain was so bad.”
Having reached her pain limit, Brenda Jo made an appointment with Dr. Claudio Manubens, a cardiologist who recently joined Villages Cardiology Institute. Dr. Claudio diagnosed her with peripheral artery disease, a condition in which narrowed arteries caused reduced blood flow to her legs.
Brenda Jo underwent three stent placement surgeries to hold the artery open and restore proper blood flow. To say she is satisfied with Dr. Manubens is an understatement.
“I just love his personality and his bedside manner,” Brenda Jo says. “He took the necessary time to explain my condition and his treatment plan, and after the procedure he has called to check up on me. The surgeries were successful, and now my legs no longer hurt or burn. I’m truly enjoying life again thanks to Dr. Manubens.”
Like Brenda Jo, countless other patients have received stellar results under the care of Dr. Manubens since he began practicing cardiology in 1995. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine from New York Medical College (Fifth Pathway). Dr. Manubens completed his residency at Penn State University and also his fellowship in Interventional Cardiology. He currently serves as chief of
cardiology at AdventHealth Heart of Florida Hospital in Davenport.
He looks forward to establishing relationships with residents of The Villages and surrounding communities. Dr. Manubens understands that these residents desire to live active lifestyles, and he doesn’t want cardiovascular disease to keep them sidelined.
“My mission here in The Villages is to be proactive rather than reactive,” he says. “That means seeing patients on the same day because when it comes to the heart, time matters. If there is a problem with your heart, I’d rather fix it at 10 a.m. rather than 2 a.m. when it becomes a 911 emergency.”
Taking a proactive approach can also lower patients’ risk for suffering a first heart attack or stroke.
“I’m a believer that if something isn’t broken, it doesn’t need to be fixed,” Dr. Manubens says. “However, I also am a big believer that we don’t want to find any surprises. Preventive procedures like stress tests make sure you look as good on the inside as you do on the outside.”
“He took the necessary time to explain my condition and his treatment plan, and after the procedure he has called to check up on me. The surgeries were successful, and now my legs no longer hurt or burn. I’m truly enjoying life again thanks to Dr. Manubens.”

Spinal decompression therapy can help eliminate pain from damaged spinal discs.
herniated disc can leave patients with excruciating pain in the neck or low back. Patients can also experience nerve pain that radiates down their arms or legs.
Patients in this situation may think their options are limited. They don’t want medication because it only masks symptoms, and they want to avoid the high costs and high risks of surgery.
Well, what else is there to try?
Fortunately, Dr. Jeffrey Glover has the perfect answer.
Dr. Glover, a chiropractor and owner of Leesburg-based Glover Chiropractic Clinic, offers spinal decompression therapy for degenerative
disc disease and bulging discs that arise in both the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) spine.
Spinal decompression therapy is a painless and noninvasive procedure that has helped a countless number of his patients become pain-free. When a disc bulges or is herniated, it can pinch sensitive spinal nerves, which often results in severe pain. The spinal decompression table gently stretches the spine, promoting fluids and nutrients into the vertebral disc area. As a result, the disc becomes rehydrated.
“It takes fluid from the outside of the disc and sucks it back into the disc,” Dr. Glover says. “Once the disc rehydrates and the size of the disc space gets larger,
there’s more space for nerves to exit the spine. The nerve will begin healing when it’s no longer being compressed or pinched.”
During the treatment, patients lie on a therapeutic table and are strapped to a padded harness. The number of required treatment sessions varies among patients, depending on the severity of the injured or diseased disc.

Precision Integrative Medicine:
Your partner in the journey to wellness.
s a firefighter, EMT and paramedic, Dustin Vaughan spent over 13 years confronting the worst scenarios in emergency medicine. The Florida native also competed at the highest level internationally in the grueling Firefighter Combat Challenge and in CrossFit--before it became trendy.
He retired early from the fire service to attend medical school to practice integrative medicine. He wanted to combine Wester and Eastern medicine and better assist patients on all stages of their wellness journey. Having sustained his fair share of injuries as an athlete and an adrenaline junkie, he knew firsthand about treatment and recovery.
“As a firefighter, and paramedic, I got tired of treating symptoms and ‘putting a band aid on it.’ It’s one thing to save a life in an emergency, but just ‘applying band aids’ doesn’t fix chronic or ongoing problems,” says Dr. Vaughan. “My goal is to treat the problem and hope the symptom goes away, rather than treating the symptoms and hoping the problem goes away, which is what most people expect.”
At Precision Integrative Medicine, Dr. Vaughan’s experience provides
an effective holistic, healing-oriented approach to health.
Rather than simply treating symptoms by prescribing medication, the goal is to uncover the root cause of the problem.
Once this is determined, an individualized treatment plan is created for the patient.
The practice emphasizes the musculoskeletal and nervous systems as key to general wellness.
“I use natural and holistic remedies to combat most any inflammatory condition,” says Dr. Vaughan.
WHAT IS INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE?
“First and foremost, integrative medicine is a partnership with the patient and their health goals--and how we can help achieve those goals,” explains Shauna Vaughan, practice manager and Dr. Vaughan’s wife.
To accomplish this, Dr. Vaughan also partners with other practitioners, whether in Wester medicine or complementary medicine such as chiropractic, etc. The human body truly benefits from this open-minded, nonexclusionary approach.
After thorough examination and review, he’ll lay out a treatment plan and recommendations. It’s then the patient’s choice as for how to proceed.
“EVERYONE IS ON AN INDIVIDUAL HEALING JOURNEY, WHICH IS WHY WE PROVIDE INDIVIDUALIZED CARE.”
PRECISION INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE OFFERS RELIEF FOR THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS, AS WELL AS NUMEROUS OTHERS:
Joint Pain Neck & Back Pain Arthritis Osteoarthritis Sciatica Plantar Fascitis TMJ Neuralgia Neuropathy Bell’s Palsy
Some patients come in to get a second opinion. Others come wanting to reduce pain because they have surgery scheduled and need help managing pain or improving their quality of life in the interim. Pre- and post-surgical therapies assist with recovery. In these cases, Dr. Vaughan works directly with each patient and their other doctors to navigate their path to wellness.
TREATMENT AND RELIEF
Afraid of needles? Don’t worry! Needle-free treatment modalities are also available, including a needle-free alternative to acupuncture.
“Wester medicines and pharmaceuticals originally came from plants. Everything today is synthesized and comes with side effects, but Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) still comes from plants,” explains Dr. Vaughan.
DEPENDING ON A PATIENT’S ASSESSMENT, A VARIETY OF METHODS MAY BE RECOMMENDED. DR. VAUGHAN IS LICENSED AND CERTIFIED TO PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING SERVICES AND MORE:
Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Movement & Massage Therapy
Nutraceutical Injection Therapy Cupping Facial Rejuvenation Energy Work (Reiki & Qi Gong) Kinesiology Taping IV Therapy
NOT JUST ATHLETES
People often lose their independence because of pain. When you stop moving and become sedentary because you’re hurting, your overall health declines, which can usher in a variety of problems.
Simply put, “movement is medicine.”
“Movement is important to health, so preventing injury and helping people keep moving is crucial,” says Shauna.
Adults aren’t the only ones in need
TCM is still medicine, but each formula is typically only prescribed for a short time, and usually the formulations change as the patient heals. Treatment protocol is customized to each patient and their individual needs.
“Everything prescribed out of our office is a natural, herbal, homeopathic, or nutraceutical -- nothing pharmaceutical,” says Shauna.
For example, Precision Integrative has a natural alternative to cortisone shots that works incredibly well.
“Cortisone over time actually degrades the joint and ligaments, but the natural alternative doesn’t cause this,” says Dr. Vaughan.
Thanks to his background, Dr. Vaughan loves the sports medicine side of his practice, but emphasizes that one doesn’t have to be an athlete to benefit from “sports medicine.” It’s truly for anyone with pain on movement or mobility issues. Many patients come for general wellness or a specific problem.
In addition to helping patients recover after injury, and post-surgery, the professional team at Precision Integrative Medicine helps patients improve and maintain health to prevent illness and injury.

A true visionary
Dr. Hussain Elhalis has his eyes set on providing optimum results for patients.
hose annoying eyeglasses that easily scratch, bend, and break. Those bothersome contact lenses that become irritating, are no longer comfortable, and leave you with dry eyes.
Dr. Hussain Elhalis, a highly respected and trained ophthalmologist at Ocala Eye, offers solutions to reduce or eliminate a patient’s need for contacts or eyeglasses.
WHAT CAN YOU OFFER TO PATIENTS WHO NO LONGER WANT TO WEAR CONTACT LENSES OR EYEGLASSES?
We offer a procedure called refractive lens exchange, which involves removing
the natural lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens. It’s an excellent option for patients who are 40 and older who become aggravated because they need reading glasses to clearly see their computer and cell phones. In the past, we performed LASIK surgery for people in this age range. However, LASIK only fixes one side of their vision—either distance or up close. Refractive lens exchange helps correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and even early cataracts. Simply put, refractive lens exchange offers a more permanent solution to their vision problems. Patients who undergo this procedure will not develop cataracts and thus won’t have to worry about cataract surgery down the road. Patients are very
satisfied that they can maintain their distance vision but no longer need to wear glasses or contacts to see up close. Although refractive lens exchange is not a new procedure, the outcomes we deliver are far superior today thanks to the advanced implant technology.
CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT CATARACT SURGERY?
Due to age, most everyone will develop cataracts during their lifetime. The procedure is similar to refractive lens exchange in that I swap out the cloudy natural lens of the eye, or cataract, with a new artificial lens. For patients who have cataracts in both eyes, the procedures are performed separately.
Lori Davis, COODO THESE SURGERIES COME WITH ANY DOWNTIME?
We ask patients to take it easy with physical activities for a week or so, but not much more than that. With cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange, patients are seeing better on the second or third day. We also ask them to go light on physical activity for a week. We will ask all surgical patients to not swim in a pool for a few weeks because we consider it dirty water and we want them to avoid risk of infection.
HOW CAN THESE PROCEDURES IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR YOUR PATIENTS?
Before the surgery, they would have to wake up in the morning and immediately reach for their glasses. That is an issue that frustrates them. During the coronavirus pandemic, their glasses would get fogged up when wearing masks. Also, patients were getting headaches when looking at the computer through their computer glasses. After the surgery, they enjoy a lot of freedom in their day-to-day activities. Many of my patients participate in tennis and other
activities, and now that they no longer need glasses, they feel like they are performing better.
WHAT ARE THE REACTIONS OF YOUR PATIENTS WHEN THEY REALIZE THEIR VISION HAS BEEN IMPROVED?
I had a patient tell me she never realized that leaves had so many details. Another patient told me how she appreciates being able to read labels and price tags when she’s out shopping without having to pull out her glasses. Simply put, they love being rid of the burden of eyeglasses and contact lenses. Eyeglasses can become easily broken or lost. Now, they no longer have to worry about those things.
WHY DO YOU ENJOY BEING PART OF THE OCALA EYE TEAM?
I started my career at Ocala Eye eight years ago. What I enjoy most about being here is providing the outcomes that patients desire. Patients come to us for specific problems, and for the most part we have a solution. Of course, we do a very thorough screening to make
sure a patient’s eye is healthy and he or she is a good surgical candidate. Our dedication to patient care is another reason I love being at Ocala Eye. We have 10 ophthalmologists and a team of optometrists all dedicated to quality eyecare. When we look at our benchmarks, our complication and infection rates are less than one-third of the national average.
Dr. Elhalis’ credentials, experience, expertise, thoroughness, and bedside manner have earned him a stellar reputation from patients and colleagues alike. More importantly, he stays abreast of the latest diagnostic and treatment options in the eye care industry to improve quality of care and deliver excellent outcomes.

“Of course, I offer routine care also, but if a patient complains of an ache or pain, I might be able to treat it myself,” she says. “This saves them the time and hassle of having to set up another doctor appointment.”
Dr. Bou Nader enjoys being part of Lakeview Healthcare System and Aegis Medical Group. Teamwork can be a powerful force for change, problemsolving, and a better quality of life. The same holds true for integrated medical practices. If she needs to refer a patient for specialized care, she has access to a team of highly skilled specialists.
“We have a tight-knit community of physicians,” she says.
One thing is certain: While a career in film never materialized, Dr. Bou Nader is unquestionably a shining star in the eyes of her patients.

What is the difference between Skilled Home Health and Private Duty?
killed home health utilizes Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists and Medical Social Workers. If someone needs Skilled Home Health services, a referral from a physician is required and the patient must be homebound.
Private Duty is non-skilled services that utilize Certified Nursing Assistants, Home Health Aides and Companions. Private Duty does not require a referral from a physician.
Skilled services include specific orders from the patient’s physician, to care for a specific condition. This could include wound care, managing chronic illnesses, therapy services and post-surgical care, just to name a few. The frequency of the visits depends on each specific patient and the needs/orders required. The medical professional performs the specific skill and then leaves the home to go to the next patient. They do not provide non-medical day-to-day activities or tasks.
Private Duty non-skilled services can provide clients with tasks such as: bathing, dressing, ambulating, transfers, toileting, laundry, transportation to Doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, meal preparation and medication reminders. Private duty can also include light housekeeping. The frequency of the visits depends on the client’s needs and requests. Lake Centre Home Care requires a 4-hour minimum and can provide up to 24 hours each day. Frequency is based on client requests.
Skilled services are covered by most Medicare plans, and some Private Insurances.
Private Duty non-skilled services are an out-of-pocket expense that is not covered by insurance. Some Long-Term

Dr. John Williams, Jr. brings the latest knee replacement technology to The Villages.
r. John Williams has an outstanding personal assistant by his side when performing knee replacement. The assistant is, in a sense, a second set of eyes.
But this is no human. It’s a robot named ROSA.
ROSA is a robotic platform that takes a personalized approach to each patient’s knee replacement using a three-dimensional model created from special x-rays. The x-rays are matched to a patient’s knee to help deliver accurate placement of implants with less softtissue dissection. The robot’s computer technology, camera, and optical trackers assist Dr. Williams to control and move surgical instruments.
“This is state-of-the-art technology, and we’re excited to use it from a surgical perspective,” Dr. Williams explains. “Thanks to this technology, we can be more precise with the alignment and placement of implants. For patients, this leads to a more natural feeling of the knee.”
Dr. Williams has been using the ROSA Knee System at his practice, Advanced Orthopedics Institute, for one year. In the past quarter, he has performed more surgeries using the ROSA system than any physician in Central Florida.
The procedure comes with numerous advantages.
“For patients who undergo knee replacement using ROSA, we can safely
send about 40 percent of them home on the same day,” he says. “Others may require a one-night hospital stay.”
In addition, recovery times are shortened thanks to a multi-modal approach that includes pain control medication, nerve blocks, and physical therapy. That’s great news for residents of The Villages who lead active lifestyles.
“If you can’t move without suffering

Dr. Alfred Cook, Jr. performs outpatient shoulder surgery, allowing patients to recover in their home.
ave you ever had surgery in a hospital? If so, you know how difficult it is to get a good night’s rest.
Nurses come in at all hours of the night. Conversations and footsteps are frequently heard in the hallway. The machine you’re hooked up to makes a constant beeping noise. These annoyances are compounded by the hospital’s nonstop intercom system.
Obviously, the ideal situation for patients would be to recover in the comfort of their homes.
That’s now possible for patients undergoing shoulder replacement surgery with Dr. Alfred Cook Jr. of Advanced Orthopedics Institute. He began performing outpatient shoulder surgeries prior to the coronavirus pandemic. Previously, patients spent two or three nights in the hospital following shoulder surgery.
“There are obvious advantages to outpatient surgery,” Dr. Cook says. “When you’re not in the hospital, there’s a lower risk of infection after surgery. Also, having the ability to recover at home instead of the hospital gives patients peace of mind and makes recovery time easier.”
Dr. Cook makes sure patients receive adequate after-care through regional anesthetics, pain medications, and physical therapy.
“The home creates an environment of success for patients,” Dr. Cook says.
Dr. Cook is undoubtedly a pioneer in shoulder replacement surgery. He has worked with companies to help formulate superior implant designs that replicate normal anatomy. Additionally, he has served as a surgical navigator using imaging systems to deliver precise representation of a patient’s anatomy during surgery, which allows for optimization of implant placement.

Mom would be proud of pastry chef’s homemade sweets.
STORY AND PHOTOS: CINDY PETERSONs a young girl, Jackie Watkins loved cooking with her mother as mom made full-course meals for the family of seven, as well as making all the appetizers, main courses and desserts when they hosted holiday dinners and get-togethers.
Jackie always looked up to her and knew it’s what she wanted to do one day.
“It was in my blood,” Jackie says. “I used to help my mom bake because that was my favorite part. She was such an amazing person to look up to and I knew that I wanted to be just like she was.”
At age 15, Jackie got a job working in the kitchen at a restaurant in Fort Myers where she grew up. After high school, she attended the Culinary Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale and moved to New York City, where she attended The Art Institute of New York City for baking and pastry.
“Pastry is really where I wanted to be,” Jackie says. “I became a pastry chef in several restaurants in New York and New Jersey. But I missed my family, so in 2006, I moved back home.”
In 2007, she settled down in Umatilla, where her title went from pastry chef to mom when she had two girls back-to-back.
“I’m the stay-at-home mom,” Jackie says. “I tried doing custom cakes on the side, but the most important thing was to raise my girls.”
But now that Jackie’s daughters are 12 and 13 and becoming more independent, she felt it was time to return to the culinary world.

1 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp pure almond extract
1/2 tsp lemon or orange zest
1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp raspberry or strawberry jam
1 pint strawberries
DOUGH DIRECTIONS:
Lightly grease 10-inch tart pan with removable bottom. In a food processor, combine flour, sugar, salt and zest. Pulse until combined well. Add the cold cubed butter and pulse until you don’t see any pieces left. Do not over pulse as this will create heat and cause the butter to melt. Add in the egg and vanilla. Pulse until dough starts to clump together. Turn the dough out onto the countertop and knead together until smooth. Place between two pieces of parchment paper and roll a little over the size of your pan. Transfer to pan and press in. You will have excess dough. Just cut around the edges with a knife. Chill in the fridge for one hour. Once chilled, place a piece of parchment paper on dough and fill the shell with dry beans or baking weights. Blind bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove the beans and parchment paper and bake uncovered for another 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Set aside to cool completely.
FILLING DIRECTIONS:
Combine the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment. You can also use a handheld mixer. Beat on medium speed until
creamy. Turn to low speed and slowly add the almond flour and alternate with eggs until evenly combined. Add remaining ingredients until well combined.
ASSEMBLY DIRECTIONS:
Place the tart pan on a baking sheet and spread jam on the bottom of the shell. Fill with the frangipane filling. Slice washed and dried strawberries and line the filling with the halved side up in ring formations. Melt 2 tbsp of jam and brush on top of strawberries. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 55 minutes, until the filling has risen and reached a golden-brown color. Dust tart with powdered sugar. Serve with ice cream.
*Tart may be kept at room temperature for up to two days.

Doggone delicious
Relish an American food phenomenon at Coney Island Drive-Inn.
STORY: JAMES COMBS ≈ PHOTOS: NICOLE HAMELt’s always fun to search for the top dog.
That is why I eagerly anticipated my inaugural journey to Coney Island DriveInn, a Brooksville staple since 1960 that recently opened a location in Wildwood.
Cities across the U.S. claim ownership of special hot dog styles, and Coney Island Drive-Inn has added several of those popular styles to its menu. Every dog has its day, and at this restaurant, the famous Chicago Dog is still having its day. I quickly gured out why it’s the restaurant’s best seller.
A Chicago-style hot dog is not only a culinary creation, but also an aesthetic one. A steamed, poppy seed bun cuddles the juicy all-beef hot dog, which is coated with neon-green relish and garden-fresh tomatoes running the length of the bun. Sport peppers are
neatly nested atop the hot dog, while a dill-pickle spear lays parallel to the meat. And there’s that squiggly line of yellow mustard.
Just one bite. That’s all it took to realize Michael Jordan, Harrison Ford, and Robin Williams weren’t the only good things to come out of the Windy City. The ingredients danced together, forming a delicious blend of avors. Biting into the sport peppers was a real treat, as the juice squirted open and oozed throughout my mouth, providing a nice level of medium heat. With the diversity of toppings, each bite provides a di erent avor pro le, ranging from sweet and sour to bitter and savory.
Of course, some locals may be turned o by a hot dog created by those darn Yankees. Never fear. Coney Island Drive-Inn o ers hot dogs with a bit more Southern air. One of them is the Gator Dog, featuring alligator meat,
smoked sausage, swamp relish, and spicy mustard.
Another option is Norm’s Big Dog, the restaurant’s second-most popular hot dog. This one intrigued me so much that I couldn’t resist ordering it. It is topped with loose meat, chili, and cheese. It also comes with two other ingredients I never imagined on a hot dog—slaw and onion rings. No, that’s not a typo. Honestly, the golden-brown onion rings looked so delicious that I considered picking them o and eating them individually. Ultimately, I left them alone and was pleasantly surprised how well they blended with the other ingredients. Who would’ve thought?
Here’s an important tip. The hog dogs are served in white boats. Continue sliding a small portion of the hog dog out of the boat with each bite. Like a big dummy, yours truly lifted the entire hot dog out of the boat and
ended up leaving a mess on the table … and my shirt.
Don’t fret if you’re not a hot dog connoisseur. The menu o ers plenty of other options, including chicken wings in a variety of avors, salads, loosemeat sandwiches, sh and chicken sandwiches, and char-grilled burgers. Fridays attract many people for the popular sh box, which features 8- or 10-ounce white sh with french fries and coleslaw. Panko-crusted shrimp and fried clams can be added for an additional charge.
These classic American favorites are enjoyed in an environment reminiscent of 1950s diners. A vintage gumball machine with colorful gumballs is placed near the counter, while old license plates from di erent states hang on the wall. Guests will also see
outstanding. The food was served within ve minutes, the service was stellar, and I learned that hot dogs can be enjoyed in a variety of styles.
With the restaurant’s steady stream of new and regular customers, it’s apparent a hot dog revolution is sweeping through Wildwood.
Coney Island Drive-Inn de nitely cuts the mustard.

HAPPY CAREER
am always on the lookout for a “proper” pint of Guinness and heard I could nd one at McGrady’s in Sawgrass Grove.
Lucky for me, Patrick Graner was behind the stick that day and when the creamy elixir was put in front of me, I stayed for two.
Graner, 47, originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania, didn’t start tending bar right out of school.
“I wasn’t that great of a student and was over high school, so I went to work in a warehouse driving forklifts for a distribution center.”
He soon became bored and uninterested.
“I was constantly late for work and couldn’t gure out what I wanted to do with my life.”
Then, inspiration came from an unlikely source.
“My mom and dad suggested that tending bar would be a good t because I was pretty social, and it was a way to get me focused on something that would let me work with the public.”
He took bartending classes and found work right away.
At 21, he started at a famous Philly cheesesteak joint called “The Brass Rail,” but later realized it wasn’t a good “ t,” which any veteran bartender knows is crucial to success.
He bounced around, taking jobs in private clubs and other watering holes until he landed a gig at TGI Fridays, the holy grail of corporate training.
“I wanted to be surrounded by the best and that company is truly focused on the bar.”
In 2005, he moved to the Village of Belle Aire with his grandad. His parents also lived there and worked for Sumter County.
Graner has worked at several bars and restaurants in The Villages, creating close ties with others in the business, but also with his valued guests.
“I have two sets of extended snowbird friends who take care of my dog anytime I want.”
Mike and Maureen, and Al and Annette have become surrogate parents for his 9-year-old dog Pugsley, and he even brings his mom Anita for holiday dinners.
“I’ve acquired a new family and now we have a new tradition.”
I’m sure Pugsley is the happiest of them all.

No resolution resolutions ... and no excuses.
STORY: ROXANNE BROWNew year, new you.
Yeah, well, I wish it were that easy.
I don’t know how many years I’ve spent making, and breaking resolutions. And not to let myself o the hook, but that’s where the saying ‘life happens’ comes in.
Take my most common New Year’s resolution which goes something like, “This year, I’m going to eat healthier, exercise more, and lose weight!”
Well, my overall goal is to do that. Realistically, I know it takes work, time, and money for a gym membership, cute workout out ts, and, ideally, a personal trainer who knows what they’re doing and who will keep me accountable.
With kids to help keep on their feet, bills, car and house payments, groceries, dogs to feed, gas, and other unexpected expenses, you know, life again… who can a ord all that?
Still, I’m not giving up. But instead of putting so much pressure on
myself and inevitably experiencing disappointment, I’m changing my wording to, “I will try my very best this year to lose the 25 pesky pounds I gained during the pandemic by eating right and simply exercising way more.”
Yes, you heard me right. I gained 25 pounds during the pandemic. And although my weight has remained steady, I haven’t lost the extra pounds due to not being able to motivate myself back to my pre-pandemic workout routine.
Next, “I will try my very best this year to keep in better touch with my family and friends.”
I say this because around May of 2022, I sent one of my daughter’s high school graduation announcements to a friend and former co-worker I hadn’t talked to in many months. She didn’t respond, and thinking back, I should’ve immediately tried contacting her, but life again.
I just thought, “Hmmm, that’s strange, but it’s ok, one of us will call
each other soon, and we’ll catch up like we always, always do.”
Well, imagine how oored I was when the announcement was returned to me unopened, and with a note saying she’d died nearly a year ago. I just stood there and cried, and to this day, it haunts me.
At one point in both instances, I blamed the pandemic for getting us used to going months without doing things we were used to doing before. But that’s it, I’m moving forward and getting back to a few prepandemic norms.
Not getting to the gym regularly, and not picking up the phone to talk with people I love and who I haven’t seen or heard from in months, is totally on me.
So, hello 2023, and with that, “I will try my very best this year to majorly step up my e orts!”
Care to join me? I could sure use the support.
