It’s ironic that Connie became a Realtor almost by accident, yet has achieved unprecedented success in the eld. Congratulations to Connie for adding another award to her already-full trophy case.

Now, and speaking of dreams come true, I want to share some exciting personal news. I am going to be a grandmother again! In January, my daughter, Shaena, along with her husband, announced that she is pregnant with their rst child! I was lled with joy when I heard this. I adore babies—those cute smiles, those tiny little ngers, those pure hearts. To think I have another one coming into my life overwhelms me with happiness. And guess what? It’s a boy! If you’re a Facebook friend of mine, you can rest assured I will be posting plenty of pictures leading up to and after my new little grandson’s birth!

Just Stress

e often associate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with wars, natural disasters, and other life-threatening events. But posttraumatic stress (PTS), a less severe form, can occur at any time during or after cancer treatment, from diagnosis onward, and it can also strike parents of childhood cancer survivors.

Cancer diagnosis can cause normal stress reactions like having repeated frightening thoughts, being distracted or overexcited, having trouble sleeping, and feeling detached from oneself or reality. PTS symptoms are more pronounced and can include feeling defensive, irritable, or fearful; being unable to think clearly; experiencing more sleeping problems;

avoiding other people; and losing interest in life. PTS symptoms can be triggered by smells, sounds, and sights that one had experienced during cancer treatment, even long after treatment has ended. And if left unaddressed, PTS can worsen into PTSD.

You can help protect yourself against PTS by getting good social support, learning about your stage of cancer, and having good communication with your healthcare providers. If you experience PTS, crisis interventions similar to those for PTSD can reduce stress. These include relaxation training, support groups, and (if symptoms are severe) medication. Talk to your doctor if you think you are experiencing PTS.

When It’s More than

Keeping Our Brains Healthy

“What doesn’t our brain do for our body?” asks Wendy Hall, LCSW. “Our brain does everything that’s important to our functioning.” Hall outlines five ways that we can maintain a healthy brain.

1. Be socially active, whether in person or remotely. Some RBOI support groups continue to offer an online option to keep people connected.

2. Stay mentally stimulated. Puzzles and reading engage our brains. So do hobbies that involve hand-eye coordination, like knitting or woodworking.

3. Get enough sleep. Insufficient sleep affects both our mood and our reasoning ability. The National Institutes of Health found that volunteers who slept 8 hours outperformed those who slept only 6 or 7 hours when it came to learning a task.

4. Engage in healthy eating habits and make sure you are well-nourished. Writes Eva Selhub, MD, at Harvard Health, “What you eat directly affects the structure and function of your brain and, ultimately, your mood.”

5. Exercise is the most important way to maintain a healthy brain. “It can be daily walking,” Hall says. “Whatever we can start out with, whatever kind of exercise, is what we should do.”

Navigating a New Normal

The American Society of Clinical Oncology recommends the following for reducing stress:

• Avoid scheduling conflicts and give yourself enough space between appointments.

• Be aware of your limits and don’t feel guilty about saying “No.”

• Ask family friends, and coworkers for help with tasks.

• Prioritize your tasks and do the ones most important to you if you cannot do them all.

• Break your tasks down into smaller steps that are easier to handle.

• Concentrate on what you can control.

• Get help with financial problems by talking to an oncology social worker or a financial adviser.

Mount Dora Air Brush Artist Richard Barrenechea painted a mural at McCracken’s Irish Pub, 719 W. Main Street in downtown Leesburg, to highlight the new restaurant, which opened in 2022. The mural, featuring the legendary Kraken depicted in the restaurant’s logo, is representative of the pub’s seaside-inspired Irish cuisine and culture. Richard, renowned throughout Central Florida for his unique art style, says he enjoys painting murals and is honored to have been chosen for the project. A new, 151,000-square-foot Costco wholesale warehouse is being built in Clermont. The much-anticipated retailer will anchor Plaza Collina, a commercial heavy, mixed-use development north of S.R. 50 directly across from Headquarter Mazda and Headquarter Honda. World War II veteran and longtime Clermont resident Frank Klum Sr., who turned 100 on January 24, was honored with a parade that passed by his house led by the Clermont Police and Fire Departments. The VFW Post 5277 he belongs to also hosted a pre-birthday party where Frank’s community involvement and years of service in the Army Air Force Corps/Air Force from 1941 to 1961 were recognized. Dozens of family members, friends, and dignitaries attended. Frank, who is known for playing his trumpet for friends on their birthdays, remains an active member of Fitness

CF gym and the Kiwanis Club of Clermont.

FEATHERED FRIENDS

Bruce and Cathy Brown opened the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail in 2003 so visitors could catch a glimpse of the Florida Scrub-Jay, a federally threatened species whose population is estimated between 7,700 and 9,300 that lives primarily in areas containing dry, sandy soil and oak scrub trees. The Browns started the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail through a grant from the National Wildlife Federation. With assistance from dedicated volunteers, the Browns planted hundreds of trees on the property to help emulate the scrub jay habitat, ensuring the protection and preservation of this species.

HAPPY TRAIL

For cyclists, it can be somewhat annoying when a bike trail traverses alongside busy highways and streets. That’s not a problem on the James Van Fleet Trail, which spans 29 miles into parts of Lake, Sumter, and Polk counties. Quiet and remote, it’s unquestionably the most rural local bike trail and o ers scenic views of swamp land, cow pastures and dense forests. The trail also lacks the heart-pounding climbs that might steer inexperienced cyclists away from the sport. Lake County residents can access the trail from the Mabel Trailhead on S.R. 50, ve miles past the intersection of C.R. 565/Bay Lake Road.

LET HISTORY COME ALIVE

The Cli ord-Taylor House was built in 1910 on the shores of Lake Eustis by Eustis’ rst settler Guilford Cli ord, who constructed the city’s rst building, a general store located downtown. What brought me to Florida: In 2005, at age 20, I moved to Florida as a student exchange employee at Universal Studios. It was a three-month job for the summer. I came with $150 in my pocket and barely spoke English. My family called me crazy. I was supposed to go back and never did. I saw a huge life of opportunity and possibility in a country where you can achieve anything. After living here for three months by myself, I took the craziest leap of faith. Now my parents live here in Florida with me.

What brought me to Lake County: I was living in Orange County when I applied for the amazing job at Dream Finders Homes, so I moved to Minneola. I fell in love with Lake County and feel like I belong here. I love the hills, nature trails, beautiful parks, and the school system.

Career highlights:

Top producer 2021 and 2022. As a realtor working for Dream Finders Homes, I sell homes and manage construction projects.

Specific career goals: I’m passionate about my work and making dreams come true for my clients.

Best thing about my career: We create a home from scratch, so it’s like delivering a baby for the client. We create their dream, watch it grow and at the end, give it to them. It’s rewarding to be part of this process, knowing I’m part of a family’s legacy.

Making it to Champs/ Footlocker XC National Championship: It was such a surreal feeling crossing that nish line knowing that I was one of only 40 that quali ed and the only one from Florida. It’s a moment that I will never forget. It was a dream come true.

Something I will take from this experience is: To not get caught up so much in the lights and just enjoy the moment.

One of my personal bests is: 14:59.25 for a 5k, placing 81st of the all-time top runners at McAlpine Park since it started in 1982 and one of only 12 Floridians to break 15

I discovered my passion: When I was in the 4th grade at Tavares Elementary School. The TMS cross country coaches hosted a race called the Patriot Mile Elementary School Challenge and I came blazing through the nish chute in 1st place.

When I’m on the track, I am motived by: My hopes and dreams of one day being able to call myself an Olympian.

It’s very easy to fall in love with the place and the lifestyle.” McCann says. “We invest in amenities to the tune of $3-4 million and we hire sta to work with residents on activities, so whether it’s Bible study one day or wine at sunset another, we’re bringing people together to share time and fun.”

The concept for such a community where homeowners can focus on the

‘value of lifestyle’ versus ‘cost of living’ originated in North Carolina back in 2017, where the company’s rst community is located.

When McCann and other partners involved in the project saw that it was thriving, they decided to introduce the concept to Florida where people with like demographics might enjoy something similar, and that’s where Lakeshore comes in. At rst, Lakeshore o ered manufactured homes but due to lack of material availability, they transitioned to site built homes by partnering with Lee Woods Construction, a local homebuilder.

New homeowners at Lakeshore choose from a selection of 1 and 2-bedroom, 725- to 1085-square-foot cottage homes ranging from $200,000 to the high $300,000s, with the choice of added amenities like garages, guest cottages, private courtyards, and lakefront lots.

All of the homes are traditionally built on-site, with customization options for colors, xtures and nishes.

The homes are constructed with energy e ciency and durability in

mind, which means metal roofs versus shingles, berglass doors and Hardie® Board exteriors that won’t warp or rot like wood materials, and double pane insulated windows throughout.

They also include features like quartz countertops, tray ceilings, crown molding and recessed lighting that not only serve to beautify the home, but make it appear larger inside.

“Our homes are smaller, which is the point of living a simple lifestyle, but some of these features make the home feel larger,” says Jennifer Belisario, Simple Life’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “And sure, residents moving in end up of getting rid of things to achieve more of a simplistic way of living, but that feeling of freedom from not being burdened with so much stu is kind of liberating.”

Overall, McCann says as beautiful as the Lakeshore community is, Simple Life is for those who want to engage with people on a regular basis, adding: “The best life is lived simply, at a lower cost and with fewer burdens in a community of neighbors who become friends.”

Connie anticipates that 2023 will be an equally exciting year for her team. On April 1, they are hosting the second annual Beats and Eats, a live music and food truck event the company founded to support the Sumter Youth Center.

Connie is also founding member of the newly formed Sumter County Network for Women’s Council of Realtors®.

“This is really exciting,” Connie says. “To bring leadership and business training to our community and fellow Realtors is thrilling. We have been underrepresented in positions of leadership in local, state, and national boards, and my hope is to change that. By elevating those around us, even our competitors, we elevate our whole community. I am so excited to watch Sumter County shine.”

Despite her heavy community involvement, Connie has big goals for her company and her agents.

“I am just as determined and driven as ever to guide us all through this new market to slay those goals through 2023,” she says.

Bearing witness to the excitement, pride and sense of accomplishment people emanate when buying or selling a home is one of Sharon Bassett’s favorite things about being in real estate.

She’s seen it seen again and again in her 26 years as owner/ broker of Bassett Premier Realty, and each time, she can’t help but feel satis ed about her role in making it happen.

After successful careers as multimillion producing agents/brokers with a large rm in the area, Guy and Kevin Shipley decided to turn their mutual passion for real estate into something of their own.

Guy, in real estate since 2009, researched di erent agencies when he came across Lakefront Living Realty, a national franchise. Guy says it couldn’t have been a more perfect nd since he and son Kevin, an agent since 2015, are more than familiar with the lifestyle.

In October 2022, they took the plunge and opened the doors to the rst and only location of the Lakefront Living Realty in Florida.

“Our lives are based around real estate, it’s not just a job or a hobby to us and everything was just kind of leading us to venture out and do our own thing,”

Kevin says, adding that specializing in lakefront property was a perfect t being that water has always been a fundamental part of his life.

“It’s something we’ve always based a lifestyle around,” Kevin adds.

Guy, who’s owned property along Lake Dora for the past 18 years, adds: “I felt like it gave me a little bit of an advantage for customers looking for that.”

Lakefront Living Realty is based in Mount Dora where father and son live, but their service area stretches from

Jacksonville to Tampa, including Central Florida, and more speci cally, Lake County.

The two specialize in lakefront property, but they also show inland residential and vacant land.

“We get people from all over the country coming here looking for lakefront housing. I mean, we are Lake County for a reason,” says Guy. “The Lakefront Living franchise is about the lakefront lifestyle so that’s our specialty but being that we’ve both been in real estate for so long, some of our customers don’t want that, so we’re not limited to that only.”

Even so, Guy and Kevin agree that showing lakeside properties is what oats their boat—literally.

“It’s always a fun thing when we take customers out on a boat and pull up to the back side of the house we’re going to show and let them see it from the water rst,” Kevin says. “It reiterates the lifestyle and how you can easily hop on a boat from your lakeside home to a nearby town, dock at a restaurant, hop out and eat, or even make it a day by visiting nearby shops and attractions.”

When Robbie and Jamie Shoemaker opened Wildwoodbased Flamingo Real Estate & Management in 2014, their intent was to give back to the community doing what they know best—real estate.

Fast forward eight years, and after being recognized by the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce, their vision has come full circle.

successful, that’s very important, but I believe that when you’ve been blessed, you should be a blessing to others.”

“What’s unique about that is when people purchase real estate from us, when they’re buying or selling with us, they know those funds coming in are also being re-invested back into the community,” Robbie adds.

Flamingo Real Estate & Management was born 10 years after Robbie and Jamie rst got into real estate. They applied their experiences and took time sharpening their skills, so when they opened the doors to their own brokerage, were able to grow it in such a way that focused solely on seeing their customers’ dreams come to fruition.

“At that point, it was either sink or swim and sinking wasn’t an option. What is the importance of having good ventilation?

Many homeowners worry about the health of their roof. After all, it keeps our homes intact and our loved ones and our possessions safe. However, few people realize how important roo ng ventilation is to a healthy roof and home. The cooler the attic space stays, the longer the life of the roof lasts. You don’t want air ow and humidity to be stagnant up in the roof. In many of our jobs homeowners go with what we call a static vent. As the heat in an attic rises, the hot air is pushed out through the vents. The downside it takes wind to push that hot air out of the top. Unfortunately, we do not have a lot of wind in Florida during the summertime.

Therefore, we like to upgrade to solar attic fans. They come with a 25-year warranty and have a solar panel that runs the fan directly. They also are not tied to your electric. They keep roof structures and materials from deteriorating and keep your attic cool in the summer by reducing extreme heat buildup. Most importantly, it takes hot air out of your attic space instead of relying on the wind to push your hot air out of your attic.

If you ignore the ventilation in your home, your shingles will blister and swell. You can also get discoloration or separation in the shingles. There’s no doubt that ventilation is key. It really prolongs the life of your roof. Even in the winter when it’s not hot, the hot air inside your house and the cold air in your attic space creates a level of moisture. That moisture can turn into mildew or mold. The solar attic fans allow us to get that moisture out of the attic space.

If any homeowners wonders whether he or she has enough ventilation, we don’t mind coming to their homes and checking for them. It’s also important to choose a reputable roo ng company. Many roof warranties must meet a certain criteria of roof ventilation. If the installer didn’t put enough ventilation and there’s other warranty issues on the roof, it could void your warranty.

f you want Glenda Shambo to shine at doing something new, just tell her she can’t.

That’s what happened when Glenda’s brother showed her a small chandelier he made after taking a stained-glass class.

Glenda admired his work and mentioned that she’d love to try her hand at the art form someday. When her brother responded, “Oh well, it’s much too hard for a woman,” she was determined to prove him wrong.

“I said, ‘I’ll show you, bro,’” she recalls with a chuckle 50 years later at her Royal Highlands home, which is accentuated throughout by beautiful stained-glass windows, all crafted by Glenda.

Following the exchange with her brother, Glenda enrolled in a class at a community center in Dade County and learned how to make stained glass.

Dozens upon dozens of personal and commissioned pieces later, she’s quite a pro.

“I’ve done two stained glass church windows, and much more. I remind my brother of that every time I see him, and he just laughs,” Glenda, now 84, adds. “He’s never made anything more, but now he asks me to make him stu .”

Washing away misconceptions

The uncontaminated truth about anti-bacterial soap.

s it better to use anti-bacterial soap? This is a question that never seems to stay answered.

The idea that anti-bacterial soaps are somehow better than regular soap is based on a lack of understanding of germ theory. We live literally immersed in a sea of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The number of bacteria on, or inside, our bodies is estimated to exceed the number of our own cells. We are all Gullivers in a microscopic Lilliputian world of microbes.

Bacteria lives not only on our skin, but inside oil glands, sweat glands, and hair follicles. No amount of scrubbing with any soap is going

to eliminate it. Over my 45 years as a surgeon, we have gone from the days of scrubbing our hands and arms for ve minutes with a sti brush, using either povidone iodine or some other germicidal soap, to rubbing our hands and arms for 15 seconds with an alcohol-based solution. Changing our approach hasn’t changed infection rates one little bit.

The idea of bathing and washing is not to kill bacteria; it is to sluice o dead skin cells and reduce the absolute quantity of bacteria on the skin.

One of the big concerns with widespread use of anti-bacterial soaps is the same as for injudicious use of antibiotics for every sni e, cough, or sore throat: enabling the development of bacteria resistant to these products.

Another concern is sensitization to some of these chemicals, causing allergic reactions.

The widespread use of anti-bacterial gels and lotions to mitigate contamination of our hands during the COVID pandemic was illogical and ine ective from the start. When you think about the countless millions of times in your life you have touched public surfaces barehanded without a second thought and yet somehow remained healthy, the lunacy of this becomes obvious to anyone with a little common sense. The same for spraying packages and even food with anti-viral sprays. COVID was airborne, not spread via contact.

So, the simple answer to the question of whether you should routinely use an anti-bacterial soap is “NO!”

he was on the brink of death. However, her damaged brain underwent a spiritual awakening. Now, she’s living to serve God. That’s the story of Dr. Candace Booth, who successfully recovered from a traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Booth, a naturopath and Tavares resident, is sharing her miraculous story of recovery through her book, “And Then God Stepped In: My Journey Through Healing a Traumatic Brain Injury.” The 68-page book, available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble, provides hope to anyone su ering from physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental trauma.

“I’m really excited people in Lake County will be able to hear my story,” she says. “It’s a two-fold story. The book is based on my journey through healing of a traumatic brain injury and my foray into becoming a Christian. Through the healing, I learned how much God came into my life to help me.”

Her transformation began in November 2017, when Dr. Booth was at a rehabilitation facility after undergoing a hip replacement surgery. While trying to use the bathroom by herself, she stood up, became dizzy, and fell backward, slamming her head into a steel pipe. She su ered a subdural hematoma, or bleeding on the brain. She was airlifted to UF Health Shands

Hospital in Gainesville, where doctors performed emergency surgery. They told her family that she’d likely die or remain in a vegetative state.

Dr. Booth’s life wasn’t taken, but it was certainly changed. God’s purpose prevailed during a brutal three-year recovery de ned by being paralyzed on her left side and numerous brain seizures.

“Throughout my rehabilitation, I felt God’s presence all around me,” she says.

Her book re ects that. The beautiful cover, which is worthy of being displayed in an art gallery, depicts God’s hands bursting through heaven’s light holding a brain. Her son, Max Wettstein, wrote the introduction, and her priest, Mark A. La er of St. Edward’s Episcopal Church in Mount Dora, wrote a touching blurb for the back cover.

“I want people who read my book to have hope,” she says.

“They should empower themselves whenever they experience pain, agony, frustration, or fear.”

Dr. Booth is taking that same message to St. Edward’s Episcopal Church. Two years ago, she became one of the church’s healing prayer ministers.

“Prayer is power, and prayer is healing,” she says. “Our ministry is invited to pray for people who are ill, and we also go into nursing homes to provide eucharistic communion prayer.”

Refreshing take on health

Not to worry. She’s having a healthy protein smoothie packed with antioxidants and vitamins.

In the background, blenders furiously mash ice. A woman in a Wi-Fi room types on her laptop. At another table, two friends sip drinks while reminiscing and laughing.

The environment at the Leesburg Nutrition House resembles that of a coffee shop. But owner Vilmaris Ortiz sets the record straight.

“We’re like a Starbucks but we’re focused on health,” she quips.

Sorry, coffee lovers. That means no frappuccinos or lattes loaded with sugar, carbs, and calories.

Vilmaris, a former nurse of 21 years, opened Leesburg Nutrition House in September 2022. She serves her clients a steady diet of specialty shakes that come in flavors such as strawberry shortcake, pina colada, mint chocolate, carrot cake, banana caramel, mango pineapple, and sugar cookie. Each shake is under 250 calories and includes 24 grams of protein and 21 vitamins and minerals.

Equally popular are fat-burning loaded teas with no sugar and plenty of Vitamin B and Vitamin C. Popular avors include watermelon,

She uses Herbalife Nutrition supplements in her shakes and teas, as well as protein donuts, oatmeal, and protein wa es.

Herbalife Nutrition, founded in Los Angeles in 1980, operates in 90 countries and touts itself for selling “greattasting, science-backed nutrition products.”

Vilmaris says consuming Herbalife Nutrition’s protein shakes and dietary supplements—as well as performing cardio exercises—helped her lose 61 pounds in 10 months.

“I was just drinking their shakes to lose weight,” she says. “I never thought I would have my own company using their products.”

That changed in 2018. Vilmaris became an independent Herbalife Nutrition distributor in Kissimmee after a Lake County resident who worked in the area repeatedly visited the store and encouraged her to bring the same smoothie and juice bar concept to Leesburg.

“I fell in love with Leesburg because the people are very kind,” she says. “Although I live in St. Cloud, I plan to move to the area.”

So far, business has been good. Especially in a society that has at least one bene cial addiction—health and wellness.

“I’m nding that after the coronavirus outbreak, people are more concerned about their immune systems,” she says.

Vilmaris often shares her own weight-loss journey to inspire customers. Prominently sitting on a countertop are before-and-after photos of herself. One shows an overweight woman with glasses and abby arms. The other shows a slim woman wearing a maroon dress with gold design and sporting a radiant smile.

“My father saw me in a picture and told me I was overweight,” she says. “That inspired me to get a gym membership. Now, I feel amazing.”

She wants her customers to feel that way too. Instead of just selling drinks, she also nourishes them with exercise. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, she and a group of women gather for Zumba in a back room of the Leesburg Nutrition House. As the instructor, Vilmaris leads a dance that follows the beat of a song, while participants mimic her moves to achieve a workout. The dances work abs, legs, and arms, brighten their moods and help unify them as they work together towards similar goals.

The Zumba classes are part of a 12-week challenge for women in which Vilmaris helps boost their con dence emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Currently, 10 females are enrolled in the program.

“I’m not just a protein bar; I’m a women’s coach,” she says. “People who complete the program have amazing stories. For instance, there was one woman who was asked to get o a ride at Sea World because she was too large. Then she completes this program and goes back to Sea World and gets on the ride. Now, she feels much better about herself.”

Certainly, Leesburg resident Ericka Chacon has bene tted. The 38-year-old breast cancer survivor comes to the Leesburg Nutrition House each day to enjoy a coconut and chocolate shake. Ericka has lost 13 pounds.

“The shakes are great because I feel full, but they give me energy throughout the day,” Ericka says. “I don’t want to go through breast cancer again, so I have to focus on living a healthier lifestyle.”

Those words are music to the ears of Vilmaris.

Dr. Serra was born in Easton, PA. He spent his entire childhood in Bushnell, FL. His father, Gene Serra MD, was a general surgeon in Leesburg, FL and served as his inspiration to pursue a career in medicine.

t sounds simple. Two pieces of bread, a slice of cheese and grill it. Easy peasy. However, the Grilled Cheese Gallery’s unique grilled cheese creations are far from simple, and your taste buds will agree.

How it began

Owner Je rey Thompson grew up in the Ocala area and spent a year of school in Mount Dora before moving to West Palm Beach to work in the hospitality industry as everything from bartender, waiter, and personal chef. On the side, he opened O-BŌ, an antique store and art gallery, which he did exclusively for a time.

“It kept the creative side of me going, but I missed working in a restaurant,” Je rey says.

When a space near his gallery became available, he toyed with the idea of opening a small dinner-only restaurant with small plates and wine. However, that idea quickly snowballed into a full-service ne-dining restaurant, complete with white linens, lunch, and brunch.

“O-BŌ was my training grounds for running my own restaurant,” Je rey says. “It taught me how to succeed and all of my mistakes.”

Je rey began to notice a di erent demographic coming to visit the restaurant and realized he wanted to have a price point for everyone, not just those looking for ne dining.

After tossing around a few ideas, he thought, “Why not do a nedining take on the classic grilled cheese sandwich?”

Challenge accepted

Je rey went to work on developing the best grilled cheese sandwich around. He tasted various types of gourmet cheeses, developed multiple dishes he likes to call “magical comfort food,” and opened his small Grilled Cheese Gallery restaurant.

The response was overwhelming.

“It exploded,” Je rey says. “I eventually had to make the tough decision to shut down O-BŌ and move the Grilled Cheese Gallery into that spot.”

Spreading the magic

Je rey jumped when the opportunity for expansion presented itself. Soon their magical unicorn logo–chosen because it’s prettier than gooey cheese–would be on the front of multiple locations in Florida and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They are currently working on their seventh location in Coral Gables.

“We handpick our locations based on the area and if we think we would be a good t there,” Je rey says. “We want to be a family place.”

Downtown Mount Dora t that criteria, and Je ery opened inside the Mount Dora Marketplace in 2022. Although it is his smallest location, he says the business is booming.

Je rey’s youngest brother Lane mainly runs the Mount Dora location and has expressed interest in the industry since he was a kid running around Je rey’s gallery.

“I’ve been working with him since he had O-BŌ and helped out where I can,” Lane says. “I’m working on nishing high school and hope to go on and do my own thing one day. I’ve already got a lot of ideas.”

The menu

Of course, the classic grilled cheese sandwich is on the menu, but presented on a hook to showcase the gooey cheese oozing from the center and served with dipper of their signature tomato basil soup.

The Chester eld adds pulled pork, hickory BBQ and caramelized onions to a gourmet grilled cheese, The Asian Cowboy features beef short rib, Swiss cheese, bacon, kimchi, chipotle and onions, and The Southern Belle adds crispy chicken, Swiss and pepper jack cheese, onions, romaine and chipotle.

They also serve a loaded steak melt, The Queen Brie with house cured bacon, brie and raspberry puree, and the GQ made with goat cheese, tru e glaze, prosciutto, spinach, and tomato on black pumpernickel.

And for those who are dairy-free or gluten-free, they o er both vegan and gluten-free cheese and bread.

1 qt. heavy cream

2 lbs. American cheese

1/2 lb. cheddar

1/2 lb. Gruyere

1 tsp. nutmeg

2 lbs. of elbow macaroni

DIRECTIONS:

Boil heavy cream in medium pot with nutmeg and salt. Slowly add all cheese (cubed). Whisk vigorously until well blended. Remove from heat. For macaroni, boil in salted water for 10-12 minutes. Mix with cheese.

BBQ PULLED PORK:

INGREDIENTS :

1 pork shoulder/picnic

5 garlic cloves

1 c. mojo

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. pepper

BBQ sauce (Our secret recipe. Choose your favorite store brand. Ours will be on a shelf one day).

DIRECTIONS:

Place pork in large baking pan. Push garlic under the skin. Rub with salt & pepper. Rub with mojo. Bake on 375 for 6 hours uncovered. Shred after cooled.

Lake Eustis Waterfront Grille serves spectacular views and an eclectic menu sure to whet your appetite.

hat do you get when you combine the splendor of nature with delectable cuisine?

In the Golden Triangle, the answer is Lake Eustis Waterfront Grille— an impressive 5,000-squarefoot, two-story restaurant overlooking Lake Eustis that’s known for delicious food, drinks, and some of the most spectacular lake views around.

The restaurant’s owners Jim and Conni Berry, along with co-owner/

builder Daniel DiVenanzo, began the joint venture about ve years ago. Lake Eustis Waterfront Grille is the rst restaurant for Jim and Conni, but Daniel has extensive experience having owned/managed several restaurants and bars.

In November 2022, the partners celebrated the culmination of their journey at the venue’s grand opening. Conni says they are not only pleased with their vision come true, but with the excitement and warm welcome from the entire community.

“It was something that was missing and something we wanted to bring as our way of giving back to Eustis,” says Conni. “There are

several lakefront restaurants around, but not on Lake Eustis, and not with this menu.”

Recently, Style Photographer Nicole Hamel and I visited Lake Eustis Waterfront Grille to see what all the hype was about, and overall, the experience exceeded our expectations. The parking lot was practically full, so we parked in a designated lot across Lakeshore Drive. Getting to the restaurant was easy via a walkway under the road along the canal that leads straight to the Eustis Marina’s shoreline where it’s located.

Once inside, we found the casual beachy vibe very fun, and the sta extremely friendly and welcoming.

There is a full bar and dining tables inside or outside on the rst oor, but we sat upstairs, which also features dining and another bar, for the panoramic view of the lake that immediately had me reaching for my phone to take pictures.

“All of our exterior docks have tie-ups so people can dock their boats there or on the seawall and walk right up to the restaurant and eat, and that’s where the magic starts,” says Conni, explaining that the restaurant’s cuisine is traditional American fare. “We’re a place to go seven days a week and we’re here to make your dining experience exceptional.”

When it came time to order we ran into a slight hitch – everything on the menu sounded so good we couldn’t decide! So, we tried several things, including bacon wrapped scallops, shrimp ceviche and crab cakes.

For entrees, we went with the macadamia crusted haddock topped with a key lime beurre blanc sauce. The dish, served with cilantro rice and asparagus, was out of this world delicious and so huge, it can be shared.

We also tried the Monte Cristo sandwich with sweet potato wedges and a side of spicy maple syrup to dip them in, a dish inspired by General Manager Ben Johnson, creator of the menu.

Ben explained that the Monte Cristo—complete with turkey, ham, mayo, and provolone served on white bread, fried and dusted with powdered sugar—was something he enjoyed as a kid.

“Everything on the menu has to do with things I’ve always liked throughout my life, and some of it, like the grilled wings, my wife in uenced,” says Ben, a longtime Eustis resident who has been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years.

Our favorite bite of the night, however, was the Lobster Mac and Cheese.

I’d never eaten lobster before, so I had nothing to compare its tastiness to, but Mainer and seafood connoisseur Nicole had a lot to say.

“I loved the huge pieces of lobster and the very cheesy avor overall. It’s probably the best lobster mac and cheese I’ve ever had”, she said, explaining that she was very surprised at how reasonably priced the dish was for the amount of food.

As for the rest of the menu, you can order anything from burgers and handhelds to salads, seafood, steak, and pasta. Conni calls it “eclectic.”

Ben believes the restaurant will be around for years, attracting people from all over Lake County and beyond, sentiments Conni seconded.

“We really put our whole hearts into it, and we want to make Lake Eustis Waterfront Grille ‘THE PLACE’ to be in Lake County,” Conni says.

here are bartenders who have a “regular” crowd, and then there’s Jerry Lipham.

During my monthly oyster pilgrimage to O’Shucks in Wildwood, I noticed every single person around me asking the bartender/shucker specifics about his family, his classes, his plans for the summer. The loudest refrain was, “Did you get our card?”

When I started to pry, all I heard was “Jerry’s the best! He is such a great guy; he deserves praises.”

Mostly it was, “You don’t get more Wildwood than Jerry.”

According to Jerry, the feeling toward his regulars is mutual. He maintains his two shifts per week

for the extra money but says the sense of loyalty to the owners and commitment to the community is why he stays.

“I’m able to catch up on what the locals are doing and make sure that my customers are well. I worry if someone doesn’t show up when they are supposed to.”

The youngest of five, he was raised by single mom Patrice Palmer, legendary Wildwood High School teacher by day, Winn-Dixie cashier by night.

“It was such a loving, caring household. We were always there for each other, and we all still meet on Sundays for lunch.”

The 37-year-old graduated from Wildwood High in 2003, and then attended the University of Florida, where he majored in agriculture. Then, like a salmon swimming

upstream, he returned to Wildwood Middle/High School to teach “Ag.”

He worked as a bartender during college, then at McCall’s Tavern afterwards to supplement his income. He started working for O’Shucks in 2015 after a college roommate got him the job.

Jerry and wife Amanda met in college. Now they are raising their six kids and taking care of a seventh.

While he says he loves his part-time gig, his true passion is teaching.

“I became a teacher because I think it’s important to invest in our youth. It has taught me leadership skills for sure, but mostly patience, which is key to working with the public. No matter how busy or crazy it gets, it doesn’t get to me.”

unch or dinner at The Rose Plantation is a feast for your eyes and your stomach.

The restaurant is situated in a home that was built in 917 as a winter retreat for newspaper publisher William Dwight of Massachusetts. It sits on a four-acre property along Fountain Lake in Fruitland Park.

As you enter the historic house, you’ll pass a beautiful rose garden. It’s easy to let your mind drift back to the early 1900s and imagine the wonderful galas, masquerades, teas, tennis tournaments, and other social events once held here.

Step inside and you will marvel at the eclectic china, fine silverware, and linen tablecloths that enhance the atmosphere even more.

“The Rose Plantation is a destination dining location,” says owner Dave Andrews. “We’re a property and home from the Gilded Age and that is the ambiance we

carry forward. It was an era of charm and service. That’s what you find here.”

Dave says the restaurant is a unique combination of “fine dining, high-quality food, ambiance, and service.” Some of the more popular food items include a 10- or 16-ounce prime rib and crab cake featuring 95% colossal crab. Diners also love the caramelized apple chicken, Black Angus filet, pot roast, duck, and pastas.

“People tell us all the time that our prime rib is the best that they’ve had anywhere,” Dave says. “Also, customers from Maryland tell us that our crab cakes are almost as good as Maryland crab cakes.”

Fortunately, you won’t have to break the bank to enjoy this high-quality food. Nine entrees on the menu cost less than $30.

“That allows people to have a fine-dining experience at an affordable price,” Dave says.

“We’re not going to skimp on quality, but we still have dishes that are very affordable.”

No wonder that approximately 50 percent of customers come

from as far away as St. Petersburg, Orlando, Clermont, and Inverness. The restaurant also hosts five-course private dining events and custom multi-course wine dinners.

Soon, Dave plans on offering tours of the 2.5-story home, which features five bedrooms and four bathrooms upstairs.

“The main living room is now our main dining room, and our full-service bar used to be the butler’s pantry,” Dave says. “There is so much history here. Around 1932, a young man came to the home on horseback and proposed to a young woman on the upstairs deck. We’ll be turning that deck into dining within the next year or so.”

Three pointers to bring sanity to your March Madness bracket.

s you read this, we’re days away from the NCAA Tournament. That means you’ll soon ll out a bracket that can win you a few—or a few million—bucks.

Be forewarned: there’s no exact science to ling out a March Madness bracket. Trust me, I speak from experience. I’ve spent unnecessary hours trying to pinpoint the Cinderella team. I’ve pointlessly identi ed teams that limped into the postseason and are vulnerable to an early-round upset.

Take it from me, trying to pick a spoiler is a colossal waste of time. I still had red marks all over my bracket. This year, I’ll be more creative and advance teams based on three methods some may consider downright goofy.

WHAT’S IN A NICKNAME?

Cats have nine lives, so picking a team with a feline-related nickname

may be wise. You can choose the Tigers, a nickname shared by Auburn, Clemson, Louisiana State, Memphis, and Missouri. Or you can choose the Wildcats of Northwestern, Kentucky, Arizona, and Villanova. Weather lovers might opt for the Miami Hurricanes and Iowa State Cyclones, while bird lovers can pick the Creighton Bluejays and Louisville Cardinals. Also, you have to advance one team with a nickname that you have no idea what it means: the Saint Louis Billikens, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, and my personal favorite, the University of California Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.

GO WITH YOUR DREAM VACATION

If you’re a fan of sur ng and sunshine, UCLA, USC, Hawaii, and Miami are obvious picks. Maybe tall, majestic mountain peaks intrigue you. If so, consider advancing Colorado or Tennessee into the Final Four. For fans who love visiting a city lled with bourbon and blues, it would be criminal not to pick Memphis. And if you cannot

stay away from slot machines, then you can take a gamble on UNLV.

ALIGN WITH THE STARS

By promoting products and setting di erent trends, celebrities have a tremendous in uence on our society. They might as well in uence our NCAA Tournament bracket, too. Celebrity sports fans run the gamut, from beautiful women like Kate Upton (Michigan) and Ashley Judd (Kentucky) to famous singers like Katy Perry (Ole Miss) and Garth Brooks (Oklahoma State) to comedians like Will Ferrell (Southern California) and Larry the Cable Guy (Nebraska). Find out if your favorite celebrity is a college basketball fan and advance that team to the Final Four.

I’ll let you know if this works. Of course, unless Lady Luck smiles down on me, I won’t be the newest member of a millionaire club. After all, my odds of lling out a perfect bracket are the same as guring out what a Banana Slug is.
