LETTER

Flock TO THE FESTIVAL MARCH 8TH & 9TH

As the executive director of the Leesburg Center for the Arts, I welcome you to the 37th annual Leesburg Art Festival. I am so proud to be a part of the team that brings artists, musicians, and dancers together from all over the country to celebrate the culture that makes our community unique.

Cover

We’d like to give a big thank you for the cover artwork generously donated by Joyce Hughes.

As the white tents pop up all over historic downtown Leesburg, the excitement of spring brings an opportunity for artists and audiences to come together each year in an atmosphere unlike any other. This year’s festival will be an exciting opportunity for families to come and spend the day together with no admission fee. There will be a Kids Zone near Town Square with plenty of activities for the whole family and a stage set up by City Hall featuring musicians, dancers, and performers from all over Central Florida. And don’t miss the Student Art Exhibit and the Leesburg Art Association Spring Show at the Center for the Arts at the corner of Fifth Street and Magnolia Avenue. On the east end of Main Street, you will enjoy the adult storytellers and local author book signings at the first Literary Arts Festival hosted by the Leesburg Public Library. Visit one of the gourmet food trucks, meet some emerging artists, and participate in a “Walk with the Expert” while you are here. There is a classic car show on Saturday and an opportunity to spot a “Living Windows” version of your favorite masterpieces. The artists you will find up and down Main Street are among the best in the country. You will certainly be moved by their artwork, and I invite you to make their art a part of your life by purchasing something you can enjoy for a lifetime. As you walk the streets of downtown Leesburg this weekend, you will see a fantastic mix of cultures and methods of expression. We are a living, breathing, thriving destination for visitors with so much to offer. We are an exciting community for residents to live and work in. I hope you will bring your family and “flock to the festival.” It is a wonderful place to be.

WHAT IS A JURIED ART Festival?

The Leesburg Art Festival is a juried show. In mid-summer of each year, artists who wish to apply submit three digital images of their work, as well as an image of their booth display and a short artist statement that explains the process of producing their art. They pay a small fee for the jury, or selection committee, to consider them as potential participating artists. Once the deadline closes for artist applications in early December, the jury panel is assembled. The jury is usually composed of artists, art educators, knowledgeable art patrons, and gallery owners. To ensure impartiality, entries are assigned numbers and no artists’ names are used during the selection process. The jury panel determines which artists will be accepted into the show based on technical skill, creativity, medium, originality, marketability, and general appeal. The artists who are chosen by the jury panel are sent invitations to participate in the festival. The artists who are chosen then have to respond quickly to the invitation. In order to reserve their space in the festival, they must pay their booth fee by the deadline, which is usually in mid-January. Artists and artisans usually prefer to be with other creative people rather than mixed in with importers, resellers, and manufacturers at an “open” or non-juried show. The goal of the Leesburg Art Festival is to present a well-rounded show that will present art for sale at many different price points, but always art that is created by the artists you will meet while walking the streets of Leesburg throughout the weekend.

Bruce NAWROCKE MY LOVE FOR NATURE, THE CHANGE OF SEASONS, AND THE EARLY MORNING AND EVENING LIGHT GIVES ME MY SUBJECT MATTER.

Pg. The 37th Annual Leesburg Art Festival 12

I love to push the envelope when it comes to light, shadows, and aerial perspective. I want the viewer to experience what I am seeing. Each painting is treated as an individual with a complete change of color palette. I love to give my landscapes the depth they deserve, and in doing so, it has taken me years to accomplish this when working with the acrylic medium. Instead of hours to create a painting, I spend weeks — even months — on each painting. It’s the way I enjoy painting. Not only is the time committed to each piece important, but equally important is the surface I paint on. I use double primed Belgium or Russian linen. I believe in longevity for my artwork, which gives the buyer an investment that can be handed down from generation to generation.

Bruce’s work will be available for purchase at the Leesburg Art Festival in Booth #605, on the South side of Main Street, between 6th and 7th Streets.

JTSmalley MY BOTS ARE LIKE BRINGING NEW LIFE TO OLD ITEMS, NOT LETTING THINGS BE TOSSED INTO THE TRASH AND LOST FOREVER TO ROT IN SOME LANDFILL.

Pg. The 37th Annual Leesburg Art Festival 14

As a society, we have been trained to consume and throw away, even if the item is still useful. I take those items and bring them together to give them a new life and purpose. Some religions believe everything living has a soul. Well, the earth is living, and metal comes from the earth; therefore, metal has a soul, no matter what shape it comes in. That soul in the metal then holds memories of everything and everyone it touched. Bringing these objects together gives them a new life and new memories together as a new soul. I think my Bots would thank me for this new life.

Find JT’s work will be available for purchase at the Leesburg Art Festival in Booth #310 on the north side of Main Street betweenThird and Fourth streets.

PLAZA CADILLAC electrifies the luxury market The 2014 Cadillac ELR luxury coupe blends dramatic design and industry-leading extended-range technology to deliver a driving experience that is sporty and environmentally friendly. It represents the first application of Extended Range Electric Vehicle technology by a full-line luxury automotive brand. The ELR delivers on the promise of the Converj Concept on which it is based. The exterior establishes a new, progressive proportion for the brand while the interior introduces a new design theme that will define future Cadillac models, emphasizing modern elegance, technology and precisely crafted details. Industry-leading Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology provides a full driving range of 340 miles (545 km), combining pure electric driving and an efficient, range-extending generator. ELR’s confident and responsive EREV driving technology is enhanced with exclusive Regen on Demand and selectable drive modes that enhance driving and make the most of efficiency. Regen on Demand allows the driver to temporarily regenerate energy from the ELR’s momentum into electricity that can be stored in the battery pack for later use. It is engaged via steeringwheel paddles adapted from traditional performance cars. The proven EREV technology is uniquely tuned for Cadillac in the ELR. Most daily commutes will require zero gasoline with zero emissions. Longer trips are free from electricvehicle range anxiety because EREV technology enables the same long-distance freedom as a conventional car.

Exterior design The Cadillac ELR has an aggressive, forward-leaning profile that introduces a new, progressive theme and proportion in Cadillac’s design evolution. It carries over almost unchanged from the 2009 Converj concept that inspired it. The overall shape is reinforced by a prominent, sweeping body line accented by 20-inch wheels pushed to the edges of the body. “The ELR represents a new dimension of Art & Science, the guiding philosophy of Cadillac,” said Mark Adams, Cadillac design director. “Cadillac’s DNA is innovation, with dramatic and provocative design. ELR delivers this in a luxury coupe that stands alone among major luxury brands globally.”

Vertical headlamp and taillamp elements create Cadillac’s signature for the ELR, day or night and from the front or rear – a brand tradition since 1948. Aerodynamics play a crucial role in the design as airflow is managed to help the vehicle slip through the air with minimal drag. A flush front fascia and grille – with active shutters behind the grille opening – as well as tapered fascia corners, enable air to move easily around the car to reduce drag. In the rear, sharp edges and a carefully designed spoiler also manage airflow. An aggressive rake on the windshield and back glass help reduce turbulence and drag and contribute to ELR’s 0.305 coefficient of drag.

Interior details Luxury appointments, great proportions and a flowing and ergonomic cockpit incorporating the latest technology interface were top priorities for the ELR interior design team. A continuous feature line from the instrument panel through the doors to the back glass creates a complete and harmonious cockpit environment. “The ELR interior is a convergence of expressive forms and premium materials that create the optimal balance of sport and luxury,” said Keith Fisher, interior design manager. “No expense was spared in bringing authentic material selections and the latest technology interface into the car.” ELR’s 2+2 layout features a blend of carefully selected materials, including available carbon fiber and ultra-premium Opus semi-aniline leather seating. Additional features include: • Eight-inch configurable instrument and driver information displays, offering four configurations ranging from elegantly simple to technologically detailed information • Power-assist covered storage/cup holder in the center console • Fold-down rear seatbacks to accommodate longer items, such as skis and golf clubs • Choreographed LED-powered accent lighting.

Belina BUISSON-WRIGHT

E M E R G I N G

A R T I ST:

WRIGHT IS A SELF-TAUGHT ARTIST WHO BELIEVES HER ABILITY TO PAINT IS A GODGIVEN GIFT. SHE IS FASCINATED BY THE MUSIC, ART, CLOTHING, AND CUSTOMS OF VARIOUS CULTURES. HER ART IS STRONGLY INFLUENCED BY HER HAITIAN AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE.

PAI N T

Wright tries to capture vibrancy in her work. She enjoys painting people in their element — from the extreme to the simple and mundane — whether they are laughing, dancing, singing, or working. Her Haitian influenced pieces usually depict tall, stylized women holding baskets. Wright believes there is a grace, strength, and beauty in these women carrying their goods. She has participated in various traditional and online exhibitions. She also participates in local art events in the city of Eustis.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT I am a self-taught artist and because of this, I create freely without fear of breaking artistic rules. I have various methods of creating my work and do not like to be labeled as a painter with only one style. My art has a strong Haitian influence. Living in the U.S., I didn’t get to experience much of the Haitian culture growing up, so this style allows me to identify with that part of my heritage. When I did visit Haiti, I remember the movement and the energy of people talking, laughing, or haggling in the marketplace and the spirit of community. I try to capture the beauty in the day-to-day and the extraordinary features of my cultural background. I often include faceless stylized women wearing red kerchiefs and carrying baskets. I also use bright colors and random strokes in the backgrounds to create energy and movement. I am a very loose painter. I don’t believe a lot of detail is needed to capture the essence of a piece. Initially you notice the color in my work but if you look closely, you see the beauty of hidden details showing through the layers. I am currently working on a series of paintings that involve bright colors, earth tones, patterns, and images of men and women of color with natural hair. These ideas emerged from sketches and scribbles in my sketchbook as a celebration of self-acceptance.
