“One reason why we love Plaza Cadillac is that we always get to deal with the same people. We’ve been doing business here for 18 years and in all that time have only had two salesmen. Bet you thought I was referring to the presidential election that just took place last month. Nope, I was referring to the Style Singles. This is now our second year of promoting Lake and Sumter’s most eligible bachelors and bachelorettes, and it just keeps getting better and better. Why is this important? Well, I don’t think our topics always need to be earth shattering or life changing for us to publish them. Sometimes it is just about having a little fun and highlighting the great people of our great community. And, this event is not ALL just fun and games. We do something worthwhile in the process. Last year for our very first singles event we raised money for a family in need. You all know little Jaxon Buell? If not, you should. Last year’s singles event raised thousands of dollars for the family and the #JaxonStrong Foundation. This year we set our sights on the Educational Foundation of Lake County. If you attended our Singles mixer in November, you met Imani Williams, who was there to represent the Educational Foundation, and to share information on all of the great work that this organization does for our schools and our children. The Educational Foundation of Lake County operates for the benefit of students and teachers in Lake County Public Schools. The Foundation programs include Grants for Great Ideas, Back-to-School Backpack Fairs, Take Stock In Children, Teacher of the Year, Rookie Teacher of the Year, Employee and Volunteer of the Year, New Beginnings, and the LCS Science Fair.
We chose to support the Educational Foundation this year because they have inspired us to have fun and give back to the community. This Foundation has organized events such as: “Stepping Out for Education,” “The Renaissance Fair,” “Ladies FORE Education,” “The Duck Race,”—just to name a few. All of which have been great fundraisers and great experiences for those who participate. Keep up the great work, Educational Foundation. You are the standard by which others are measured. Now, back to our Top Singles. With over 23,000 total votes cast, we have a winner. Dr. Danny Soares of Lady Lake took the lead and is featured on the cover of this month’s magazine. Congratulations Dr. Soares and all the other contestants. You are all winners in my book. I wish you all a wonderful Holiday season! Merry Christmas,
Kendra Akers

LAKE COUNTY OFFICIAL EARNS TOP STATE AWARD Lake County Tax Collector Bob McKee has done it again! He previously earned the state’s Excellence in Financial Operations Award, after his office’s financial records, practices, and use of technology were rigorously reviewed by a judging panel. Now he’s the recipient of the 2016 Legacy Award—based on his
office continuing to enhance its financial operations. Most Lake County residents rely on services from the local office as tax collectors handle state duties of property tax collections and enforcement; drivers’ licenses and motor vehicle services; hunting and fishing licenses; birth certificates, and more.

Dude, it’s time to get your life together and quit blaming cops for your troubles. For you, the stakes have never been “higher.” 2 // A GRANDMOTHER SPRAYED a garden hose at two sisters who were engaged in a knife fight near her Wildwood home. Haven’t they heard? You never bring a knife to a garden hose fight. 3 // A RESIDENT OF THE VILLAGES was stopped while driving the wrong way at Lake Sumter Landing. He told the officer he was diabetic, but his blood-alcohol level registered at .335. I think this guy should be a congressman. He’s very reckless and oblivious to what is going on.

NEW CHALLENGE (Veronica): We wear so many hats as officers in the Salvation Army. We love the people; they’ve welcomed us with open arms. There’s a homey feeling here.
22
I lakeandsumter
SERVING CLIENTS (William): There are 300 people we make contact with each week. (Veronica): This is a place where people can feel safe. We have people who come for breakfast, and throughout the day our social services workers take assessments for utilities, food, and Christmas applications. We have kids who come in for tutoring, and on Mondays and Thursdays we have men’s basketball. PASSION FOR SALVATION ARMY (Veronica): I was introduced to the Salvation Army’s programs around 6 when my family was in poverty and my parents were drug
.com
addicts. (William): I’ve been with the Salvation Army for five years now, and came through a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program…I was living on the streets and saw the red shield at this lowest point in my life. I didn’t know what else to do and they took me in. That’s how I met the Salvation Army, found the Lord, and began this journey. GREATEST MIRACLE (William): For me it’s the fact that I wake up every day and I don’t have a desire to drink or use drugs. From ages 18 to 30, it was hard drugs on a daily basis. I am proof there is hope.
FAVORITE QUOTE (Veronica): “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.” (William): “Be the change that you want to see in the world.”
VITAL STATS Home: Leesburg Ages: Will, 36; Veronica, 25 Connected: The Conleys met more than two years ago, via a mutual friend, and from Facebook as Salvation Army cadets. They were commissioned and ordained in the Salvation Army on June 5, and married June 7. They now oversee the Salvation Army of Lake and Sumter counties at 2605 South St., Leesburg.

TIME OF FIRSTS (William): For me this is incredible to be in the ministry with my best friend, and there really is nothing better than that. It’s a huge learning curve, because everything we are doing right now is a first. Being newly married we are learning how to live together, we are learning how to be in ministry together. Each day is brand new.

VITAL STATS AGE: Hmm, difficult to answer. Lets just say I’ve celebrated a few anniversaries of my 31st birthday HOME: Tavares
WHAT IS YOUR PASSION? Helping people, especially those with medical and physical needs. WHAT HOBBIES DO YOU ENJOY? Traveling, working out, relaxing at the beach, and experimenting with cuisines from different cultures. HOW DID IT FEEL TO BE THE TOP SINGLE? I was very excited to be chosen as the top single person last year. It gave me a lot of time to reflect on what I want for myself as far as goals and dreams and what qualities I would look for within a mate. HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED DURING THE PAST YEAR? I do not feel it was a life-changing event; however, I did meet some great people along the way, which I have some contact with to this day. WHAT IS YOUR DATING STATUS? My dating status at this time is that I’m still having fun. WHAT HAS CHANGED FOR YOU DURING THE PAST YEAR? This has been a very busy year to say the least. Aside from working, traveling, and working out, I’ve decided to pursue my aspirations of completing of my masters degree in 2018.
SHELLEY GRAHAM
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS? I see myself achieving my professional and personal goals. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO THIS YEAR’S TOP SINGLE? Embrace it and have fun and live a little!
A look back at last year’s answers: WHO WAS YOUR HERO AS A CHILD? Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone. I remember watching his fights and cheering. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GUILTY PLEASURE? A big red velvet cupcake with buttercream frosting! WHAT IS THE BEST PICK-UP LINE THAT WAS USED ON YOU? “Is your daddy a baker? Cause you have some nice buns!” And no, that line did not work.

We enjoyed the process, and now the product, so much that we’ve recommended them to dozens of friends and colleagues who were in the market. — JASON & BEVERLY GRAY

AGE 17 / FIRST ACADEMY, LEESBURG
TYLERHICKS AMERICAN LEGION BOYS STATE PROGRAM: I was nominated by Ms. [Amanda] Patterson, my guidance counselor, and I attended a weeklong program involving coursework in government, leadership, and political processes. The first couple days we learned about Florida history and government and state and national laws. After three days, we actually held nominations for city, county, and state-level governments to learn the process. FLORIDA SENATE FORUM: After participating in the American Legion Program, I was inspired to initiate and organize a candidate forum for the three candidates competing for Leesburg District 12 State Senate at our school. Over 300 people attended. COMPETITION: I am very competitive. PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY: It’s our responsibility, as older high school students, to be a

good representative for the younger people because some don’t have others to look up to. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Current activities include: president of National Honor Society, varsity basketball and tennis, vice-president of Student Government, yearbook staff, business manager for 2016-2017 Homecoming, volunteer campaign work for U.S. House of Representatives, Daniel Webster, and for Florida State Senate District 12 Campaign, various fundraisers for First Academy. MY INSPIRATION: My role model is Jesus Christ solely because of what he did as the representation of our faith. It’s hard to live up to that high standard of God, but you can only try to give back. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: I plan to attend Florida State. You can’t find a better place than Tallahassee if you want to go into government. My dad and my sister are alumni. I plan to join a church. I feel that it’s important to stay connected. Keeping God first and following what He has planned for me.

FAVORITE FIELD OF STUDY: American government is my favorite class. I’ve always been interested in history. If you don’t learn about the past, we are bound to repeat the same mistakes of the past.

DECK THE HALLS WITH BUDDY HOLLY
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”
‘Tis the season to be jolly and all that stuff. This time of year we are bombarded with songs of the holidays. They surround us. They’re in the malls, on Main Street, on TV, and on the radio. It’s really not all that bad since they are great songs and happy ones. They can also be terribly funny. Well-meaning kids can love Christmas carols and sing them the way they hear them, not the way they’re supposed to be. The new kiddy versions of the songs are usually a hoot and a vast improvement over the original. As a little kid a long time ago in a place far away, I was guilty of taking a nice Christmas carol and corrupting it. The line from “Silent Night” is supposed to be “Round yon virgin, mother, and child.” I sang “Round John Vernon, mother and child.” Kids often foul up that line but my version had a special twist in our small hometown. The real “John Vernon” was a crusty—some would say grumpy— old man who ran a store that sold virtually everything, including lots of junk. He was famous locally for having a “Going Out of Business” sale that lasted at least 10 years. There are plenty of other carols that have received their own special touch from kids. Here are some examples of the real lyrics followed by the kids’ version:
“Santa Claus is Coming to Town”
WRITER: FRED HILTON
“We Three Kings of Orient Are” CORRECT VERSION: “We three kings of Orient are.” KID’S VERSION: “We three kings of porridge and tar. “
“Joy to the World!” CORRECT VERSION: “Joy to the world! The Lord has come.” KIDS’ VERSION: “Joy to the world! The Lord has gum.”
“Deck the Halls” CORRECT VERSION: “Deck the halls with boughs of holly.” KIDS’ VERSION #1: “Deck the halls with bras of holly.” KIDS’ VERSION #2: “Deck the halls with Buddy Holly.”
CORRECT VERSION: “All of the other reindeer.” KIDS’ VERSION: “Olive the other reindeer.”
“Feliz Navidad” CORRECT VERSION: “Feliz Navidad.” KIDS’ VERSION: “Police, mom, and dad.”
CORRECT VERSION: “He’s making a list. He’s checking it twice.” KIDS’ VERSION: “He’s making a list of chicken and rice.” While kids do a great job of rewording traditional Christmas carols, no one can match the genius of the cartoon residents of Florida’s own Okefenokee Swamp. Pogo Possum and his buddies set the gold standard in rewording holiday songs. Cartoonist Walt Kelly gave us two unforgettable versions of beloved carols. My personal favorite is the swamp critters’ version of “Deck the Halls”:
“Deck us all with Boston Charlie, Walla Walla, Wash., an’ Kalamazoo! Nora’s freezin’ on the trolley, Swaller dollar cauliflower alley-garoo!” The song goes on for five more stanzas , which are equally absurd are more fun than the original version. Kelly’s comic strip featured another memorable mangled Christmas carol. The chief song revisionist was Pogo’s pal, a mud turtle named Churchy LaFemme. Churchy’s magnum opus had only one stanza but it was an unforgettable one:
“Good King Sauerkraut looked out, On his feets uneven, While the snoo lay round about, All kerchoo acheiven.” My apologies in advance for doing this but you realize that Churchy’s version of “Good King Wenceslas” usually produces this exchange:
“What’s ‘snoo’?” “Not much, what’s new with you?”
“Frosty the Snowman” CORRECT VERSION: “With a corncob pipe and a button nose.” KIDS’ VERSION: “With a corncob pipe and a butt and nose.”
“Jingle Bells” CORRECT VERSION: “Bells on bobtails ring.” KIDS’ VERSION: “Bells on cocktail rings.”

PROBLEMS WITH YOUR PROSTATE? Does this sound familiar? As you grow older, do you realize you are getting up more often at night to urinate? Have you come to accept this as in inevitable part of aging as your father did or his father before him? There is no need for men to suffer from frequent urination because they are getting older. Dr. James Young, a down-to-earth urologist in Lake County since 1982, has successfully treated thousands of patients who suffer with enlarged prostate (BPH). What’s even better is that treatment options are more numerous and far less invasive than those offered to our fathers and grandfathers. Dr. Young is internationally recognized as one of the leading experts in Prostiva RF Therapy, an in-office procedure for the treatment of enlarged prostate in men. Prostiva utilizes low-level radiofrequency energy to destroy the obstructing component of the enlarged prostate The procedure allows men to stop taking medications for their prostate issues without undergoing major surgery. That distinction has placed him on Castle Connelly’s prestigious Top Docs list for five consecutive years. “Dr. Young is one of the pioneers
and current leaders of in-office BPH therapy, particularly with the Prostiva RF therapy system,” said Greg Fluet, former CEO of Urologix, Inc. “He has been a consistent and committed champion. For that, I have significant respect and admiration.” Dr. Young has performed more Prostiva procedures than any urologist in the United States and possibly the world. In 2014, he performed nearly 400 Prostiva procedures, accounting for approximately 5 percent of the 8,000 performed worldwide. The procedure is performed in Dr. Young’s office under local anesthesia. “I am very happy with the results I have achieved for many patients using Prostiva RF Therapy,” says Dr. Young, who has successfully treated nearly 3,000 patients with this procedure. Not only is Dr. Young happy; patients are extremely satisfied, as well. That’s evidenced by the glowing reviews he receives on healthgrades.
com and vitals.com from patients who underwent the procedure. “His revolutionary procedure was easy with very little discomfort,” wrote one patient. “My urinary problems have disappeared, I sleep better, and have significantly more energy,” another patient wrote. Dr. Young encourages all patients to visit vitals.com and healthgrades. com to find for themselves what patients are saying. Dr. Young’s Healthgrades online profile was visited 2,311 times between January 2015 and January 2016, ranking him 18th among 978 urologists in Florida. Always striving to be on the cutting-edge of therapies to treat enlarged prostates, Dr. Young will soon be offering a new procedure called Rezum. This safe and efficient treatment uses thermal energy in water vapor to remove obstructive tissue surrounding the prostate. The procedure is performed in-office
III PAID PROMOTIONAL FEATURE III
under local anesthesia or oral sedation. Dr. Young will be the first urologist in Central Florida to offer this cutting-edge treatment. “It takes less time to perform and destroys even more of the obstructive tissue. It also has rapid symptom relief and minimal discomfort. I’m usually not a doctor who jumps on new technology, but I’ve talked to many urologists who have studied this procedure in clinical trials and are now using this therapy at their practices today. They are extremely pleased with the results they’re receiving.” ________________________________
JAMES W. YOUNG III, M.D. Board-certified Urologist Practicing in Lake County since 1982 with extensive experience in evaluation and management of prostate problems.
Comprehensive care If you are a first-time patient of Dr. Young, you will receive a detailed examination. “When I see a new patient I perform physical examinations and properly evaluate the patient’s symptoms, thus diagnosing the underlying problem(s),” Dr. Young said. “Next, I describe to the patient what’s normal and then explain what is abnormal with him. Lastly, I teach him his treatment options. If I’ve done a good job of teaching, he will select the correct option for himself.” While prescribing medications for enlarged prostate can be done by primary care physicians, only urologists are trained to thoroughly evaluate the bladder and prostate (including ruling out prostate cancer), as well as providing extremely effective minimally invasive, officebased therapies as alternatives to lifelong medical therapy. With an office staff with nearly
as much experience as the doctor (many have worked with Dr. Young for 25 years), you don’t spend a great deal of time waiting to see him. “We pride ourselves in being timely in seeing our patients. We respect our patients’ time as much as we do our own. Patients appreciate this; many of our patients tell me I have the best office staff on the planet. I consider that a huge compliment.” So if you are waking up at night and have difficulty falling back asleep because you’re worried what may be wrong, then it is time to check in with Dr. Young and have him examine you. “Many men accept frequent bladder urges as part of aging. And while it is part of the aging process, it’s not like death and taxes. There is something you can do about it.”

ore than 50,000 toys were given out last year to needy families in Lake and Sumter County, and the local Toys for Tots coordinator predicts the numbers will be higher this Christmas. “We’ll probably do more because we are going further down into Bushnell, Webster, and Coleman; we didn’t have anybody to help us out there before, and now we do,” says Villages resident Jack Maiz, the local Toys for Tots campaign coordinator. “We will help as many as we can as long as we have toys,” he says. Toys for Tots has been a function of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves since 1947 with a mission of helping less fortunate children experience the joy of Christmas. December 7 is the last day residents can take new, unwrapped toys to one c ca of approximately 250 local Toys for Tots drop-off sites. From there, the toys are taken to a Leesburg warehouse on West Main to be processed and stored until they are distributed to families Dec. 14-17. fter the holiday gifts have been unwrapped and tummies are filled to capacity, you’ll probably ask your visiting friends and family what they would like to do. They often shrug and then request a theme park or the beach because that’s what they always do when they visit. This year, go southwest to one Florida’s most historic—and fun— cities: Tampa. Quite frankly, I never thought about Tampa as a holiday destination until I visited the Henry Plant Museum for its annual Victorian Christmas Stroll last year. The delightful experience was a walk through history and inspired me to return to see what other holiday delights the city has to offer. The Plant Museum is not the only place that dresses up for Christmas. Tampa’s attractions are always fun, but their holiday transformations are spectacular. Here are some old and new favorites that I’ll be exploring again this season:
HENRY B. PLANT MUSEUM
35TH ANNUAL VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS STROLL www.ut.edu/plantmuseum Located downtown and part of the University of Tampa campus, the Henry B. Plant Museum is the former Tampa Bay Hotel, and you’ve most likely seen its rooftop minarets from the highway. The Victorian Christmas Stroll gives visitors a glimpse of what Christmas looked like when the hotel opened in 1891. Granted those 19th century guests didn’t have 40,000 lights like now, but the vintage costumes, decorations, and antique toys are authentic. Be sure to relax on the veranda with complimentary cookies and cider. If you can stay for the evening, live music is featured each evening from 6-8 p.m. The Vintage Christmas Stroll runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Dec. 1-23. Tickets: $15 adults, $13 seniors, $9 youth (Discounts available on Family Days: Dec. 5-6 and 12-13).
TAMPA BAY RIVERWALK
WINTER VILLAGE AT CURTIS HIXON PARK www.wintervillagetampa.com Overlooking the Hillsborough River, the 2.4-mile Tampa Bay Riverwalk is a destination within itself with shops, restaurants, and museums. This year, the Curtis Hixon Park located at 600 Ashley Drive near the Tampa Museum of Art, will be transformed into a Winter Village. While the ice skating rink may be a major draw, the Winter Village features much more including a “Pop-Up” Christmas market and a waterfront café. “This is a new concept that will offer a whole winter experience,” said Ashley Anderson of the Tampa Downtown Partnership. “The open-air café will have a distinct menu of holiday classics, and parents and others who do not want to ice skate can watch the skaters.” The Winter Village runs from Nov. 18-Dec. 25. Weekend hours are 10 a.m.

THE FLORIDA AQUARIUM
“SWIM WITH THE FISHES” www.flaquarium.org Ride the Pirate Water Taxi to The Florida Aquarium where you can have an in-water reef experience. Guests age 6 and older swim on a replica of one of the Florida Keys’ most beautiful coral reef dive sites—the Dry Tortugas— without being a certified SCUBA diver. During this introduction to diving, guests wear a small SCUBA tank, regulator and floatation device to stay on the surface. The manmade reef is home to a vibrant community of fish including moray eels, a prickly porcupine fish, colorful surgeonfish, and much, much more! While you get up close and personal with the fishes, your friends and family watch from the exhibit pathway. The “Swim with the Fishes” experience is $75 per person, which includes Aquarium admission. Children 6-8 years old must have a paying adult swim with them. General admission to The Florida Aquarium is $19.95, children 3-11; $22.95, seniors; and $24.95, adults.

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo takes on a magical ambiance during the holidays with its festival of lights and holiday events in the evenings. Open until 10 p.m. on Dec. 2-3, 9-10, 1623, and 26-30, the “Christmas in the Wild” showcases the animals at night but also features Christmas carolers, holiday treats at the Christmas Lodge, artisan displays, and, of course, Santa Claus. Encompassing 56 acres in a lush, tropical garden setting, the Zoo offers popular educational programming and fun recreational amenities. It has won accolades as one of the country’s most family-friendly zoos. With more than 1,200 animals, the Zoo emphasizes endangered, threatened and vulnerable species from climates similar to that of the Tampa Bay region. The natural settings make it a favorite spot for local photography club field trips. Single day tickets are $22.95, children; $29.95, adults. Online discounts and membership passes are available.
This upscale Tampa hotel, across the street from the famed Bern’s Steak House, was built for food lovers with a state-of-the-art kitchen theater, an award-winning restaurant, a colorful patisserie, and a chic rooftop bar. If your holiday excursion calls for a grown-up getaway, The Epicurean is just the place to relax. Or maybe mom and dad want to take a cooking class while the little ones explore Tampa with grandparents. At a recent class, I met a woman whose husband had taken the kids to Busch Gardens while she spent the day in the Epicurean Theatre. When you enter the wine-themed lobby, a personal attendant hands you a glass of wine and escorts you to your room where the entire check-in procedure is handled via electronic tablets. Located in Tampa’s Hyde Park area, The Epicurean offers a variety of cooking and wine classes as well as Sunday morning yoga classes. Check the website for the monthly classes and events. Special packages are available, including a Florida resident package that starts at $139 through Dec. 17.

TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY ON DENALI STORY: THERESA CAMPBELL PHOTO: FRED LOPEZ
“W
e all have a story to tell, and this is mine,” Lake County Circuit Judge Larry Semento penned in “Tears in the Wind: Triumph and Tragedy on America’s Highest Peak,” where he reflects on the exhilarating joy of reaching the summit of the highest mountain in North America, followed by overwhelming grief when a group member fell off the mountain to his death. Larry’s book is a true story of a guided expedition from May to June 1989 on Denali, 200 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska, formerly known as Mount McKinley. “The events that occurred on that climb dramatically affected my life, forcing me to face the full range of human emotions,” Larry wrote. “The experience was both immensely rewarding and tragically heartbreaking.” He climbed 20,310 feet while linked by ropes with other mountaineers. It took two weeks to reach the top. “It felt unbelievably good and rewarding after all the effort and months of preparation,” Larry says. He was in awe of the beautiful scenery at the top. After 30 minutes, it was time to go down the mountain.

.com
“Most accidents happen on the descent, when people are more careless and anxious to get back down,” Larry says. The winds were near hurricane force while the group descended. Larry lost his balance, yet he quickly plunged his ax into ice on the mountain, not realizing 21-year-old assistant guide, Chris Hooyman, had just unhooked himself from the line to check on the situation. Chris was blown off the mountain. Larry carried guilt for years that he may have been responsible for the guide’s death. However, others reminded him the guide was doing what he had been taught to do— help people in distress. Thanks to the encouragement of his daughters and wife, Nancy, Larry put his recollections of the 1989 expedition down on paper, based from his journal and notes he had stashed away in a box. It took him more than a year to write about it. “It was very hard,” he says. “Once I had it done, I was very happy I had done it because it was therapeutic. It was as if a load had been lifted off my shoulders.” It’s possible the judge may write more books in the future. His court docket is mostly felony criminal cases, and in his spare time he enjoys reading true crime stories.

A Philharmonic Concert for the Band STORY: LEIGH NEELY

T
he Leesburg High School Band—the Swarm of Sound—is going to Washington, D.C. for the elite President’s Cup High School Concert Band Invitational in March 2017. One of only eight bands across the country is invited, and the “most accomplished high school music programs” will spend a day with the Soldier-Musicians of “Pershing’s Own,” The United States Army Band. On a cool October afternoon, the Leesburg High School Band was doing warm ups in preparation for three hours of marching practice. “The kids are focused on marching right now,” says Gabriel Fielder, the band’s director. “In class, we’re getting ready for indoor concerts.” Band members were surprised, however, when Paula Vargas, a volunteer with the band who lives in The Villages, stepped up to the podium and announced, “I have a little surprise for the concert band. This is Jean Butler, conductor of The Villages
Concert and Swing Bands, and she’d like to speak to you.” “Mrs. Vargas told the Villages Concert Band about the honor you’ve received, and I talked with the board of both bands,” Jean says. “We are presenting you with a check from both bands for $4,000. We hope you have a wonderful trip and congratulations from the Villages Concert Band and Villages Swing Band.” In addition to donations like this, the band will receive proceeds from a partner benefit concert with The Villages Philharmonic Orchestra. Gabe was excited to share that Villagers David van de Velde and David Lewis donated
the salaries for the orchestra, which means all the funds from the evening go directly to the band. “Everything comes off each other,” van de Velde said in a recent interview. “Everyone can be part of this event that focuses on Leesburg. Pasquale Valerio came down to hear the band, and that starts the buzz.” “At first we thought the students might play with the orchestra, but they’d need to play at a professional level,” Gabe says. “Now they will serve as hosts and there will be some music prior to the concert from the Brass Choir.”
The concert will be in the Leesburg High School auditorium, which seats 863 people, on Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $13 to $40 dollars, depending on seating location. Founder and conductor, Pasquale Valerio, directs The Villages Philharmonic. For more information about the event and to purchase tickets, go to www.band2dc.com. Donations can also be made through this page, or you can complete a form to become a sponsor of the trip. “When folks do something like this, it’s tremendous,” Gabe says. “This will help every single one of us get there, and it’s very meaningful.”

PINK TEA FUNDRAISER Margaret Anderson and Angela Estrada founded the Pink Tea Fundraiser to raise funds for women unable to afford mammograms. While enjoying tea together in 2004, they decided to take charge and spread the word to their community. The first event raised more than $800, and they decided to make it an annual occasion. Women from Mount Dora, Eustis, Sorrento, Leesburg, The Villages, and other local Central Florida communities came together Oct. 19 at Sip’s restaurant in Leesburg to drink tea and raise funds for this worthy cause.

A World of Christmas Cookies STORY: THERESA CAMPBELL
A resident of Legacy of Leesburg for more than six years, Pat Medrick loves baking a variety of Christmas cookies for the holidays, including international favorites. “Sometimes I do 20 different kinds of cookies,” she says. “I make little packages and give them to my neighbors.” As a little girl growing up in New Jersey, she remembers spending hours watching her mother make batches of holiday cookies. “It was always a big deal at our house. She did the cut-out cookies, and when my three kids were growing up, that was a big deal for them, too. I would make the cookies and get frostings and all kinds of things that they could put on it. They would invite their friends over and have a cookiedecorating party.” Pat also shared her cookie-baking passion with many foster children in her care while living in Michigan. “The foster kids never had those kind of experiences so they loved baking Christmas cookies and they loved eating them even more,” she says. Pat traditionally starts her holiday baking right after Thanksgiving, often making rolled refrigerator cookies that can be sliced, baked, and placed in the freezer.

Among her favorite cookies to make and share are international sweet treats, like Russian Tea Cakes, and she enjoys using an electric cookie press to make Spritz cookies from Scandinavia. “It’s It s a regular cookie press with a trigger and an it makes perfect cookies,” says Pat, noting the electric cookie press is ideal for her at this stage in her i life. “My hands have arthritis now, and so it is re really hard to do press cookies.” Pat say says her husband, John, of 51 years, loves lov it when she whips up his favorite favori cookies—Date Nut Pinwheels—which take three days to prewheels— pare. She first makes the dough, chills it, spends another day making the filling, then spreads it on the dough, rolls it up, chill chi the dough again, and then slice and bake on the third day. f it’s ambiance and elegant food you desire, El Conquistador at Mission Inn Resort as it all. We were seated at a window overlooking a beautiful fountain and a vista stretching out over an impeccable golf course. We began our meal with the lobster bisque, and it was heavenly. Next came our entrees—New York Strip steak for me and Lamb Chops for my husband. They were perfectly prepared to be tender and juicy. Add to that the loaded baked potatoes and sautéed spinach with tiny red Peruvian sweet peppers that complemented the greens beautifully. The service was

exceptional. Just when we thought we’d ask for something, the server was at our table inquiring about further needs. Dessert deserves its own recognition. We ordered crème brulee to share and received two small servings—one of vanilla and one of chocolate with heavy whipped creamed topped with raspberries. It was light and delectable. The perfect ending to our lovely meal. We also enjoyed coffee with dessert and it was the famous Royal Cup and was superb. When you make your plans to go, make an evening of it so you take the time to make the meal a culinary experience. You’ll be glad you did.

801 CITY GRILLE
GET GRILLED
STORY: THERESA CAMPBELL PHOTOS: FRED LOPEZ
I
n the heart of Clermont’s historical downtown district sits 801 City Grille, which provides a pleasant ambiance and beautifully warm décor that immediately sets the tone for a relaxing experience. My dining companion and I wished the background music had been just as soothing. The restaurant’s gorgeous atmosphere begs for classical music or strings rather than the slightly distracting radio talk/music we heard on a recent weeknight. Luckily, we were won over with an appetizer of fresh mushrooms stuffed with delicious crabmeat, and it had just the right amount of a spicy kick. Montrose Chicken Frisco, featuring boneless chicken sautéed and smothered with mushrooms, onions, and topped with Swiss cheese and a sherry wine sauce, is listed as one of several house specialties.
The 801 City Grille is also noted for its slow-roasted prime rib, an array of salads, appetizers, sandwiches, steaks, seafood, and other chicken dishes. My friend chose the Chicken Parmesan, featuring three boneless fresh chicken breasts lightly breaded in Italian bread crumbs, sautéed, and topped with Marinara sauce and Mozzarella cheese that was baked and served over Angel Hair Pasta. “It’s excellent,” she said, pleased by the large serving, which meant she could take half home for her husband to enjoy. I ordered the prime rib, yet our server returned and revealed the cut of beef was chewier and not as tender as the restaurant wanted to serve, so my order was changed to a delicious 14-ounce New York Steak. I did appreciate the restaurant charging me for prime rib over the costlier steak.
It’s important to keep in mind 801 City Grille is only open for evening hours of 3:30 to 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday with Happy Hour from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The restaurant has a private banquet room—ideal for groups and special occasion events.

pen the door to the Old Time Diner in Leesburg and step back into the world of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and skinny Frank Sinatra. Black and white photos line the walls of these wonderful stars of the 50s along with many others. The familiar black-and-white tiled floor reminds you of “Happy Days” and their favorite hangout. When we had lunch, the place was hopping but things were bopping along with ease. The servers are friendly and helpful. I ordered the Reuben sandwich with fries and my friend enjoyed a salad along with spaghetti and meatballs with toasty garlic bread. Our server recommended the gyros because the owner is Greek, and it’s one of his specialties. The burgers were also highly recommended because they’re made with fresh meat and made into patties by hand. We’ll definitely try those at some point. The meals were delicious, though I have to say the sandwich was not piled with meat like one normally expects from a deli sandwich, but that did not take away from the great flavor of the meat and sauerkraut with the sweetness of the sauce. The fries were hot and crispy and delicious. Though she may have planned to take part of her meal home for dinner, I must admit my companion enjoyed all of her tasty spaghetti. She gave me a bit of the sauce, and it’s obviously made fresh. We didn’t opt for dessert, though the ice cream and milkshakes were tempting. The prices are very reasonable. The wait for our food wasn’t long, and everyone was friendly and courteous. And, if you love Elvis, you’ll enjoy all the photos and a lot of good memories about the great stars of the 50s. On our way out, we met Chef Bono, the owner of the restaurant. He was delightful and obviously enjoying himself in the new restaurant. With more than 25 years of experience in OLD TIME the restaurant business, he has also had DINER restaurants in Brooklyn, Baltimore, and 1350 W N Blvd North Caroline. Leesburg With a winning smile and a handshake, 352.805.4250 he said, “Be sure to tell all your friends about our place. We’re excited to be here.” I think I’ll be excited to go next time too.

BLAZING THE BOURBON TRAIL As the cocktail culture explodes once again, bourbon is making a comeback. Some fans say it never left as millions of people have journeyed along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® to learn more about this truly American spirit STORY: MARY ANN DESANTIS
100
I lakeandsumter
.com
As a wine lover, I do not drink much bourbon. Something about the holidays, though, draws my palate to the caramel, vanilla, licorice and sweet oak flavors that good bourbon offers. Maybe it’s reminiscing about my first taste of bourbon in one of my favorite Christmas delicacies: Bourbon Balls. Even if you are not a liquor drinker, bourbon is a great American story and there is no better place to hear that story than on the famed Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, where nine distilleries dot the roads between Louisville and Lexington in north Central Kentucky. You can start in Louisville or in Lexington, and travel along some of the most beautiful roads in America, including the famed Bluegrass Parkway. The Kentucky Distillers’ Association created the Bourbon Trail tour in 1999 to educate visitors about the history and tradition of the state’s signature spirit. Visitors also get an up-close-andpersonal look at the art and science of crafting Bourbon—which is virtually unchanged from the way 18th century settlers did it. Those early settlers had a hard time getting crops to market over trails and mountains, and soon they realized that converting corn and other grains to whiskey were more transportable and kept excess grain from rotting. Farmers shipped the whiskey from Bourbon County, one of Kentucky’s original counties, down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The long trip made for natural aging in oak barrels that were stamped “from Bourbon County.” Connoisseurs began asking specifically for Bourbon County whiskey because of its distinct mellow flavor and amber color. Today, the aging barrels are among the first things you see when you tour a Kentucky distillery. At Four Roses
Bourbon, established in 1888, you can even peer inside a 16,000-gallon fermenting tank made from Florida Red Cypress. At Woodford Reserve, which makes the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, you can also see the copper pot stills where bourbon is triple distilled. The distilleries along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® offer tours and tastings to those 21 years and older. It’s impossible to visit them all in one day, so pick your favorite brand and start there. Or plan to spend at least three days cruising along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® to sample all nine. For a list of distilleries and more information, visit kybourbontrail.com.
Closer to Home: Palm Ridge Reserve If a trek to Kentucky is not in your plans, you can learn about the whiskey distilling process firsthand with Palm Ridge Reserve, an awardwinning Florida whiskey created by Dick and Marti Waters of Florida Farm Distillers. The Umatilla couple created the micro-distillery in 2008 to create a traditional 90-proof, bourbon-style whiskey in small batches. Their annual production has grown to 6,000 bottles, and they still pay close attention to details. “We make the whiskey here, from start to finish,” said Dick Waters. “We smell it, taste it, bottle it, and even put our own unique labels on the bottles.” Twice a month, the couple hosts free open houses at the distillery so “visitors can taste the whiskey fresh from the still,” said Waters. In December, tours are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, and on Saturday, Dec. 17. For information, please visit palmridgereserve.com or call 352.455.7232.

used to love watching the holiday episodes of “Roseanne.” They were always chaotic, family-centered meals that closely resembled the ones in the house where I grew up. We had some real characters (as most families do), and I have memories of some great holiday meals. Though my father had only one brother, my mother came from a family of 10 children. Each of those children had anywhere from two to 10 children themselves. This meant our family gatherings were as funny and miserable as some of the meals at Roseanne’s table. Whether we were there for the holidays or Sunday dinner, it was always an event. My grandfather b built a huge wooden table in th their side yard, and it would be full of pots, bowls, and platters of the best food anywhere. All my aunts were wonderful cooks, and they always tried to outdo tr one another, which meant we had everything from po pot roast with all the trimmings to fresh green beans fr cooked with ham tto homemade coconut cake with seven-minute frosting. seve The yard was hug huge so all of us cousins, many of us aro around the same age, would play tag or h hide and seek until our mothers had the th table filled and the men had discu discussed hunting and politics. I realize realiz this sounds like a story from tha that guy who created “The Waltons,” Walton but I promise you it’s tru true. Good times. Invariably, there would be Invaria a family squabble about fami something. Fixing a som meal with six to eight m different cooks who all thought they were the best usually meant some nitpicking.

“Mildred always leaves the salt out of her food. It’s like eating bland mush.” “Mae made the cornbread too dry again. I keep telling her you don’t need that much cornmeal.” “Claudia’s roast was tough today. I thought Ralph’s false teeth were going to fall out.” And then when you knew something was seriously wrong with a dish, you’d hear, “Bless her heart, she always scorches her green beans. Today, they’re burned to the bottom of the pan.” When the meal was almost fi nished and everyone was enjoying dessert, the last aunt would arrive. I can never remember a time when she arrived and ate when everyone else did unless we were eating at her house, and even then, she’d be cooking right up until time to serve. She always brought some kind of Jell-o congealed salad and mincemeat pie. I never had much love for either of those things so it was no great loss to me. However, my Uncle Clifford loved that mincemeat pie. I think it was because he was a tee-totaling Baptist, and my aunt fermented the mincemeat. At any rate, he was always much happier after three pieces of mincemeat pie. Finally, we’d all load up our cars again, after trading leftovers and sharing desserts. All the kids would crawl into the backseats and fall asleep because we’d been going nonstop all afternoon. I’d sleep all the way home, wake up long enough to change into my pajamas, brush my teeth, and crawl into bed. There you have it, the ingredients for a successful family or holiday meal—a lot of food, a little fun, and a bit of fuss so everybody knows they’re well loved.
