A leader IN GLAUCOMA SURGERY: Dr. Panzo is committed to bringing the latest in glaucoma treatment to his patients. He was the first physician in Lake County to perform mini and aqua flow shunts in glaucoma, and most recently ECP (Endoscopic Cyclophotocoagulation). This minimally invasive procedure provides patients with quick vision recovery and can be performed at the same time as cataract surgery. Cataract patients frequently have glaucoma, so during cataract surgery they can be treated together as it may minimize the need on glaucoma dependent medications. Drawing from over 20 years of cataract surgery experience, Dr. Panzo will consider all conditions that may affect your eyes in order to recommend the treatment that’s best for you.
“
I consider it a privilege to be able to help my patients fully enjoy the precious gift of sight.

Be a Go-Giver
A Our ‘Special Feature’ this month is ‘Business Women of Style.’ A variety of amazing women — who are either at the beginning their careers or have reached the pinnacle of success — are featured in this section.
couple of weeks ago I was presented with a book from a friend/colleague of mine. The book is titled The Go-Giver. When I saw the cover of the book I was intrigued and I thought to myself, why does this person want me to read this book and what is a Go-Giver? I have heard of a go-getter, but never a Go-Giver. Of course, my curiosity led me to read the book. As I read through the first chapter I found myself being drawn in more and more. Soon I couldn’t put the book down. It is about a young man who is eager to learn the secret to success. He experiences a sequence of events while being guided by the influence of a very successful entrepreneur. As he is led through each experience, he learns the core values of true success. This book truly resonated with me. It incorporated the values and goals I had when I launched my company years ago and have carried with me along the way. It established in my heart that I was, and am, on the right track in my business life. I won’t say too much about the contents of the book in case you would like to read it yourself; however, I will say that I felt a certain peace as I finished the last page.
Also, as I look through the pages of this month’s issue of Style magazine as we prepare to go to press, I realize that this magazine embodies all the principles laid out in the book. Our “Special Feature” this month is “Business Women of Style.” A variety of amazing women — who are either at the beginning their careers or have reached the pinnacle of success — are featured in this section. Looking closely, I see something very similar about them all; they have all made a choice to follow their dreams and do exactly what they love to do. At some point along the way, they have all experienced what it is to be a Go-Giver rather than a go-getter. I will leave you with an amazing thought that occurred to me after I finished the book. Earlier I mentioned that the person who presented me with the book was a friend/colleague, but what I didn’t mention is that this person is also by definition a business competitor — and that’s what it means to be a Go-Giver.
Wishing you all much success!

Baker and English each have extensive knowledge in advertising, community relations, marketing, and public relations. The two partners and their staff have more than 80 years of combined marketing experience. Baker graduated from the University of Central Florida and worked in the banking industry as a marketing executive before moving into the advertising agency side and working with a variety of clients for the past 12 years. English graduated from Florida State University and was formerly general manager of English Communications, Inc. He managed more than 250 accounts at three magazines. Due to the synergy between communities, beCreative is focusing its growth in the markets of Lake, Sumter, Marion, Seminole, and Orange counties.

Fashion Finds As we swap sweaters for sundresses and mittens for minis, it’s easy to get caught up in ridding one’s outfit of layers. But before you toss out the extras just yet, take a cue from actress Frieda Pinto’s easy-breezy summer accessories. Stackable bangles like hers will make your ensemble sizzle, but the $3,500 price is hot enough to set your bank account ablaze. Yikes!

Name: Sheila, Maggie, Traci (left to right - three generations) Piece: Accessories Time: 10:15a.m. Date: March 3, 2012 Location: Bealls Department Store
Story Behind It: With tiny toes and big imaginations, tots take joy in traipsing through the house in oversized heels, dangly earrings, and cherubic grins smeared with shiny red lipstick. During these excursions, thanks to a little help from Mom, their daughters are also beginning to uncover a personal affinity for fashion. As girls grow to become women, tastes will naturally evolve, just as Sheila, Maggie and Traci understand — yet despite their differences, this trio still has something to celebrate. Why It’s Great: Their ensembles are like night and day, but upon closer inspection, the glimmer radiating from around their necks proves accessories to be the tie that binds. And unlike the tangible trinkets and scarves they’re wearing, the thread stringing this family together is one that can’t be seen or touched. Love, respect, and a chance to pass down a little piece of their personalities have formed an unbreakable bond that is three generations strong.

PROSTATE PROBLEMS? Does this sound familiar? As you grow older do you realize you are getting up more often at night to urinate? Have you come to accept this as an inevitable part of aging as did your father or his father before him?
“Men no longer need to suffer from frequent urination because they are getting older,” says Dr. James Young, a down-to-earth urologist with 29 years of experience at Urology Associates of Lake County in Eustis. Although the cause of these symptoms is most likely an enlarging prostate (BPH), a normal part of the aging process in men, treatment options are more numerous and less invasive than those offered to our fathers and grandfathers. Years ago there were two options for treating an enlarged prostate… surgical excision via an open operation (knife) or much more commonly by performing a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), commonly referred to as a “roto-rooter” by patients and physicians. Both required hospitalization as well as major anesthesia and could be fraught with complications such as bleeding, infection, loss of bladder control and even death. “In my career I have performed over 3,000 TURPs; however, I no longer perform any,” says Dr. Young. “There are presently too many excellent alternatives to consider a hospital operation for the vast majority of patients with BPH.” “When I see new patients I perform a physical examination and properly evaluate the symptoms, thus diagnosing the underlying problem(s),” he says. “Next I describe to the patients what’s normal and then explain what is abnormal with them. Lastly I teach them their treatment options. If I’ve done a good job of teaching, they will select the correct option for them.” While prescribing medications for BPH can be done by primary care
physicians, only urologists are trained to thoroughly evaluate the bladder and prostate (including ruling out prostate cancer) as well as providing extremely effective minimally invasive office-based therapies as alternatives to life-long medical therapy. One such option is Prostiva-RF Therapy, a procedure performed by Dr. Young in his office under local anesthesia that usually takes less than 30 minutes. Prostiva utilizes low level radiofrequency energy to ablate (destroy) the obstructing component of the enlarged prostate. “I am very happy with the results I have achieved for my patients using Prostiva-RF Therapy,” says Dr. Young, who has successfully treated more than 900 patients with this procedure. “Medtronic is a $13 billion a year publicly traded corporation that perfected the technology for Prostiva and produces the necessary hardware. Recently Medtronic produced an educational DVD for international distribution to inform patients and physicians worldwide regarding the benefits of Prostiva therapy. Seven of the eight patients featured on the DVD are my patients. I am very proud Medtronic selected my practice to feature the benefits of Prostiva-RF Therapy. However it is sort of a bad news/good news thing. The bad news is neither my patients nor myself received a penny for our participation. The good news is Medtronic gave us all the DVD’s we want, so if anyone wants one all he needs to do is drop by my office at 801 Northshore Drive in Eustis and we will give him one!” And with an office staff with nearly as much experience as the doctor, (many have worked with Dr. Young more than

20 years) you don’t spend a great deal of time waiting to see him. “We pride ourselves in being timely in seeing our patients. We respect our patient’s time as much as we do our own,” adds Dr. Young. “Patients appreciate this; many of our patients tell me I have the best office staff on the planet. I consider that a huge compliment.” So if you are getting up at night and can’t get back to sleep because you are thinking about what may be wrong with you, it’s time to check in with Dr. Young and have him check you out. “Many men accept frequent bladder urges as part of aging. And while it is part of the aging process, it’s not like death and taxes. There is something you can do about it,” he says.

Where Hope Comes to Life
Help create hope by promoting health and supporting recovery in our community.
We are At Lifestream, more than 500 caring, compassionate and qualified people, in over 30 different programs, are bringing “hope to life” for those in need throughout Lake and Sumter counties. LifeStream’s visionary board is vital in providing guidance to our organization and strategic planning to ensure we accomplish our mission. Our Foundation Board seeks to raise community awareness and financial support for LifeStream. The resources needed along the road to recovery are diverse, with treatment varying from individual to individual. can’tt be done Helping those we serve can
without the support of the community as a whole. Just as we offer the resources necessary for recovery to those living with mental illness and addiction in our community, we need help providing these resources. We work tirelessly to make this a reality, impacting countless lives. Most people don’t understand what a community mental health center is, or who receives services. We treat approximately 20-30,000 individuals and their families in any given year. We are a non-profit organization. We’re open 24 hours a day, seven days a week at our access center.
“I know for a fact if my mom wouldn’t have sent me to LifeStream, I would have died. Now, life today is great. Being in LifeStream, I’ve started laughing, and loving my life which wasn’t normal for me. I’m playing sports again. I feel good, I feel healthy. I’m taking care of myself a lot better.” “I’m really appreciative now for LifeStream. They care about you. They really do.” — Holly “I lost my children, three times. My family didn’t want anything to do with me. I lost everything. I lost friends. My whole life was gone. Being treated at LifeStream, getting my life back… now, being the mom that I’m supposed to be, and a daughter… it’s wonderful.” — Lisa

I support LifeStream This campaign seeks to educate our community about mental illnesses; to foster tolerance among peers, employers, educators, and families; to provide people who have misconceptions about mental illness quick and easy access to information; encouraging people to “start the conversation” about mental wellness and engage in dialogue with friends, family and co-workers; and finally to enhance philanthropic support for LifeStream and the services that are needed to best meet the needs of and serve our community. Who is LifeStream? LifeStream Behavioral Center (LifeStream) is a fully licensed and accredited mental health and social services organization, with a mission “To Bring Hope to Life By Empowering Individuals and Families in the Communities We Serve to Achieve Recovery and Resiliency.” This mission is accomplished by providing a continuously improving quality continuum of care that is cost effective, culturally competent, and includes quality treatment education, case management, and rehabilitation services to children, adolescents, adults and seniors.
What is mental illness? There is no single answer to this question because there are many mental illnesses, just as there are many physical illnesses. Many are believed to stem from biological causes, just

people are affected by mental illness like cancer, diabetes and heart disease, but some are caused by a person’s environment and experiences. The major distinguishing feature is that they are all medical conditions which affect thought processes. The severity and duration of a mental illness vary from person to person. While the effect of these disorders on a person can be devastating, with proper treatment over time recovery is possible. LifeStream
provides a comprehensive range of services to those in need in Lake and Sumter counties, ensuring each unique individual the best chance for recovery. From psychiatric hospitalization, detoxification, residential, outpatient, school-based, homeless housing and community based social services, LifeStream offers everything an individual might need in the journey toward recovery.
What is recovery? Each individual holds his or her own definition of recovery. For some, it might be volunteering, or returning to school, or holding a job. For others, it may be reestablishing and maintaining social relationships, taking part in community activities, or being able to live independently. Being able to do these things instills a sense of pride and dignity in those we serve: those who are able to get back what they had lost. The impact of recovery on the community is immeasurable. The relationships restored. The families repaired. And the lives rebuilt. Getting well for someone experiencing a mental illness, and for those who care for him or her, is an ongoing process. If you’re a resident of Lake and Sumter County in any stage of that journey, LifeStream provides the resources for recovery. We recognize that an individual affected is a family affected. And the community we serve is our family.
Lifestream’s concept of “where hope comes to life” is being able to enlighten people. We work to break down the stigma so we can treat mental illness like any other healthcare condition. — Dr. T.J. Valente LifeStream Medical Director
Our pledge is to continue to provide quality care and advocate for individuals and families who have been touched by mental illness and substance use disorders. It is critical that as a community we stand together to ensure the needed services are available to all who are in need. Support people. Support community. Support Be positive
Speak up
Respond to people who have a mental illness as individuals. Learn about the person and deal with him or her on the basis of your knowledge, not your assumptions
Don’t be afraid to let others know of your mental illness or the mental illness of a loved one. As long as mental illness remains hidden, many people will believe it to be a shameful thing that needs to be concealed. Speaking up about mental illness can be empowering for individuals by helping to relieve the “internalized stigma” they feel.
Support Help bring together people in our community that are leaders including local businesses, faith leaders, law enforcement, educators, civic groups and the media and let them know how mental health affects all of us and our community.
Change your language Words shape perceptions. Avoid using disparaging language when referring to people with mental illness. Be supportive and encourage them to seek help.
Get involved The more you know, the more you can help. Education is the key to eliminating stigma. We invite you to contact us on our website www. e all know how debilitating back pain can be. It can adversely affect our quality of life and sideline us from participating in our favorite activities. Fortunately, Gulfcoast Spine boasts two physicians who are nationally renowned for their success in performing minimally invasive spine surgery. Those physicians are Dr. Frank Bono and Dr. James Ronzo. They offer the most advanced diagnostics and treatments for relief of back and spine problems.
The central focus of Gulfcoast Spine is an unrelenting commitment to explore every possibility of improving patients’ lives and helping them return to their prior level of functioning. Providing total patientcentered care in a compassionate, competent manner has and always will be of utmost importance to the entire Gulfcoast Spine team. It’s easy to see why so many patients opt for minimally invasive spine surgery. With the traditional approach, surgeons use a large incision and cut through muscle and nerves to access the spine. Patients endure severe post-operative pain, significant blood loss, scarring, longer recovery times, and higher risk of infection. Conversely, when Dr. Bono and Dr. Ronzo perform minimally invasive spine surgery, they use a small incision (1 inch or less) that leaves
little scarring. Patients enjoy very favorable outcomes, including reduced operating times, less soft tissue damage due to reduced muscle retraction, less painful surgical incisions, reduced blood loss, faster recovery times, less scarring, and greatly reduced infection rate. Ninetyfive percent of their patients go home the day following surgery. These two qualified and highly skilled physicians have performed thousands of successful minimally invasive spinal surgeries. That’s impressive, especially when you consider that so few spine surgeons in the United States actually perform minimally invasive spine surgery. Their success with minimally invasive procedures was instrumental in helping Citrus Memorial Hospital being ranked as having Florida’s top spine surgery program in 2011 by HealthGrades, an independent healthcare ratings company. Gulfcoast Spine has brought the same quality of care and state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedures to Oak Hill Hospital, and Brooksville Regional in Brooksville, as well as The Villages Health System in The Villages.
“Here at Gulfcoast Spine, we are a true minimally invasive practice,” Dr. Bono says. “We spare muscle destruction by using a series of dilators to separate muscle in order to access the operating site as opposed to having to cut or burn muscle. Our infection rate is less than 1 percent. It’s important to note that with traditional or openspine surgery infection rates can range anywhere from 10 to 30 percent nationally.” Dr. Ronzo has mentored spine surgeons and neurosurgeons in the art of minimal access spine techniques for spinal fusions. For several years he has been sharing his expertise in the operating room with visiting spine surgeons from around the country.
Dr. Bono h has won a number of research awards from the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons Surgeo and the Michigan Osteopathic Association. He H has also authored medical articles in sever several publications and has lectured on subjects su such as spinal reconstruction. doctors specialize in procedures such as Both doctor surgery, minimally invasive minimally invasive inv kyphoplasty for vertebral fractures and fusions, kypho reconstructive spine surgery, micro-distumors, recons stenosis, scoliosis and spinal deformicectomy, steno ties, and spine tumors. f
lorida is truly the “land of flowers” as Ponce de Leon dubbed it in 1513 when he came ashore near present-day Saint Augustine. Public botanical gardens are scattered throughout the state, and for the past year I’ve wandered through more than a dozen of them. Many of these gardens are part of the American Horticulture Society’s Reciprocal Admissions program. I discovered that every one is unique with diverse plants, different terrains, and even unusual attractions for visitors.
I’m not the first, however, to discover Florida’s botanical riches. After Ponce de Leon conquered the land for Spain, a host of famous botanists and plant enthusiasts made treks through the Sunshine State. American naturalist William Bartram was the first to catalog what he saw during a four-year journey that began in 1773. “Florida’s temperate climate has been appealing to researchers and botanists for centuries,” says Sandra Friend, author of Exploring Florida’s Botanical Wonders and 23 other books about Florida’s natural habitats. “They came here specifi-
cally to learn about new varieties of plants that weren’t found elsewhere. Even Thomas Edison was experimenting with plants in Florida to replace rubber.” The goal of Friend’s book is to encourage people to visit and to be inspired by Florida’s botanical wonders. The next step, she says, is to help protect these incredible natural habitats that make our state unique. And there is no better place to begin than right in our own neck of the woods with these five gardens — all within a couple-ofhour’s drive time from Lake and Sumter counties.
Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens SANFORD www.centralfloridazoo.org Occasionally — or maybe often — it’s just plain hard to get little kids excited about strolling through a botanical garden. Reading the Latin names on signs near the shrubs will not interest them for long, if at all, but a trip to Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Sanford will keep nature-loving parents and their children entertained for an entire day. As I walked to the admissions gate, I noticed people in trees. At first, I thought I had stumbled into an audition for the television show “Survivor.” Adults, teenagers, even small children were swinging like monkeys, zipping from tree-to-tree, and balancing themselves on single ropes or swinging bridges. It was all part of the Zoom Air Adventure Park that surrounds the entrance. The eco-adventure courses are a great way to get a bird’s eye view of the zoo and gardens, but Zoom Air is separately priced from the zoo’s admission. Central Florida’s animal habitats are smaller than those at Tampa’s Lowry Park or the Miami Zoo, but are just as family friendly. Open at its present location since 1975, the facility’s mission is to provide a refuge for animal species that are threatened in the wild and to provide an educational experience for visitors. “Keeper Chats” are held on Saturdays and Sundays in areas small enough to allow everyone to see and hear. With more than 400 animals on view, it could be easy to forget you are inside one of Florida’s most lush botanical gardens. Take time to enjoy the boardwalks that meander through the park over wetlands and enjoy the special garden areas.

Bok Tower Gardens LAKE WALES www.boktowergardens.org If you love magazines, you probably know that Edward W. Bok was editor of Ladies’ Home Journal for 30 years. He retired in 1919 and spent more time at his winter home on one of the highest hills of Florida’s Lake Wales Ridge, where the sunsets are dramatic. In 1921, Bok commissioned landscape architect Frederick L. Olmsted Jr. to change his arid sand hill into a “spot of beauty second to none in the country.” Even with all its beauty, Bok still felt something was missing in the gardens. In 1927, he commissioned Philadelphia architect Milton B. Medary, to create a majestic “Singing Tower.” The Gothic towers of Europe inspired Medary and Bok, who missed the glorious sound of carillons in his native Netherlands. Two years later, the iconic landmark was completed, and Bok Tower and Gardens have since become a National Historic Landmark. The tower is not open to the public on a daily basis, but you can enjoy the picturesque gardens 365 days a year. Bok Tower Gardens also features a “what’s in bloom now” page on its website that is quite helpful when planning a visit. may2012

is to visit several times to see the different collections at their peaks. Planning a late spring visit? Don’t miss Mary Jane’s Rose Garden, named after Mrs. Leu who planted her first roses by Lake Rowena. With more than 215 varieties and 650 roses, Leu Gardens has the largest formal rose garden in Florida.
Be sure to walk through the Rose Garden toward the western edge of the property to see the unique floral clock. Late spring and early summer are the best times to see the annuals in the clock face in full bloom. Mr. Leu was as dedicated to his camellias as his wife was to her roses. The camellia collection is one of the largest in the U.S., and it all began with the Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua
originally planted by the Orlando businessman. Today, the gardens feature more than 2,000 camellia plants and 230 cultivars, including displays of the tea Camellia. The best time of the year to catch the Leu camellias in bloom is November through January. Take time to enjoy the Leu House Museum, a restored 19th century home listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ravine Gardens State Park PALATKA www.floridastateparks.org/ravinegardens You want to go to the mountains, but you only have a few hours to get away. Drive north toward Palatka on the west side of the Saint Johns River. Just before you get to the downtown area, turn right into Ravine Gardens State Park, where a hike along the Azalea Trail on the steep, natural ravine will certainly remind you of the Great Smoky Mountains. The narrow paths curve from the top to the bottom of Ravine Gardens, which are covered with azalea blooms from February to April. The 146-acre park, a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression, began as a botanical garden and became one of Florida’s early tourist attractions after it received national recognition for its more than 95,000 azalea plantings. The trails are extensive and precipitous, but they are the best way to see the beautiful combinations of tropical and subtropical plantings, ferns, blue flag iris, and of course, azaleas. Don’t worry if you are not a hiker. A 1.8mile loop, known as Ravine Drive, has several observation decks where you can pull over and look down into the natural ravine that is also covered with cypress, sweet gum, and hickory trees. A formal garden at the entrance offers a lovely spot for photos. The stone structures and terraces are remnants of the American rustic architectural style popular during the mid-20th century and include an obelisk dedicated to President Franklin Roosevelt. An historic marker also reminds visitors that botanist William Bartram began his 1773 journey through Florida near here. Make sure to spend some time inside the community building at the entrance where a display of old photos show a manicured and terraced Ravine Gardens n the 1930s. Today’s gardens are much more natural but are just as beautiful.

If you love orchids, then a visit to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in downtown Sarasota is a must with its living collection of more than 6,000 orchids. Research, plant science, and conservation continue to be important activities at Selby Gardens just as they were when the Gardens opened to the public in 1975. Selby botanists have discovered or described more than 2,000 plant species new to science. The small entrance belies what’s beyond its doors. The greenhouse area just beyond the admissions desk is filled with orchids, bromeliads, and other epiphytes. The 14 acres of outdoor gardens overlooking Sarasota Bay offer a quiet serenity that led West Virginia native Marie Selby to make this her home... and her legacy. To soak up the garden’s splendor, pause for a moment under the massive Morton Bay fig tree with its 15-foot roots sprawling out from the base or enjoy the man-made waterfall and Koi pond for quiet reflection.

It’s time to “pin” your life on the web! Join over 10 million other passionate Pinterest users and pin photos of your favorite activities, people, pets, places, things, and — you name it — you pin it!
interested? WRITTEN BY HEATHER TOOTLE // PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRED LOPEZ
AS AN AVID FACEBOOK FAN and user, all of the status updates about my friends’ newfound addictions to Pinterest — piqued my interest. The first post that caught my eye was that one of my friends was using it to plan her entire wedding. Next, I saw that someone was going to make “easy peanut butter fudge” from a recipe found on one of her friend’s boards. Many others compared Pinterest to “chocolate” and then I knew I had to see what it was all about.

Pinterest is an online pin board where a user grabs images from the Internet, categorizes them on “boards,” and shares them with others who “follow” her pins. Upon landing on the Pinterest home page, a photo of a pair of cognac, platform, strappy sandals caught my eye. Instantly I clicked on it and read the person’s caption hinting that the shoes would be a great birthday present. The image was also tagged with how long ago she pinned it and the website where it could be found. To my pleasant surprise, the online store it was pinned from emailed me a 20-percent-off coupon. I fished my cellphone out of my purse, pulled up my email, found the online coupon code that I could use to buy the shoes… and I bought them. The comments under her photo of my newly ordered, soon to be owned, shoes read like product rave reviews. “I need these,” “I love them,” and “just ordered them” screamed the praises of this person’s personal style — a person I have never met before. I wanted to share my new purchase by pinning it to my own board. Unfortunately, my instant gratification of showing off my new shoes was squashed because in order to pin,
you must be invited. Disappointed and deflated, I requested an invite from the website. Similar to the cool kid’s table at lunch, being invited to Pinterest excited me to the fullest. Days passed without an invite and I found myself at a party talking about how tasty the ham and cheese sliders were, only to find out that the cook who made them found the recipe on Pinterest. Once I learned that you could begin pinning quicker if invited by an existing user, I incessantly blabbered my email address and Facebook username so my new friend could invite me. We talked about the yummy recipes she found on Pinterest, cute baby room ideas, organizational tips, fashion favorites, travel locales, and her hairstyle obsessions. As a hairstylist, she pins inspirations, current work she has done, celebrity styles, color ideas, and cuts she adores. My excitement was growing as I have been looking for a stylist for a while and made a note to myself to visit her page to see some of her work. The day finally arrived when the invite hit my inbox. I quickly set up my account and began to peruse the functionality of the site. I connected with my Facebook friends, whose pins I currently follow, and dove into their pages to discover intimate details of their personal fashion style, taste in cuisine, fitness inspirations, dream homes, vacation spots,
products they love, craft ideas, design inspirations, people they obsess over, kids ideas, recipes for every mood, cocktails for girls night out, outfits for every occasion, and virtually everything they wished for, dreamed of, or are inspired by. I knew I had to begin to pin and the easiest way to do it was to re-pin something that you see on another person’s collection of boards. I thoughtfully created my boards: Beauty Tips, Home Sweet Home, Baby Stuff, Funnies, Yum, Baby Bump Shrinkers, Workout Inspirations and Hair. I visited my new hairstylist friend’s page and re-pinned an image with easy step-by-step instructions on how to create waves in 15 minutes. I also made it a point to find the ham and cheese slider recipe and re-pin it to my Yum board. I visited some of my favorite shopping websites and pinned away. Three hours later I realized that the baby was crying, dinner was nowhere near started, and I had four missed phone calls. It was indeed addicting. Today I have Pinterest installed on my browser, which when clicked collects all the images and videos on the page so you can choose what to pin and where to pin it instantly. I also have 19 followers and I follow 27 people. I am starting out slow and have found that pinning recipes and photos of food have been the easiest.
Outdoorr furniture 12 likes 10 comme ents
I have also realized that I crave sweet as much as salty based on the number of my pins to my Yum board. My followers can also tell that I am planning on a short, cropped hairstyle for summer as well as looking for unique outdoor seating ideas for my patio. I have instantly invited others to get to know who I am through visual inspiration which is yet another avenue to communicate my personal style and lifestyle. So far, Pinterest has instantly connected me with a stranger whose shoes I ended up purchasing through the retailer’s website and a new friend who craves savory party foods and who will soon give me the cute summer hairstyle I have been obsessing about. I have also been able to visually organize and execute my abdominal workout routine, plan a backyard barbecue, build a virtual dream wardrobe, and decorate my daughter’s room with the cutest personalized artwork — that I created. Without a doubt, Pinterest has become the hottest next-big-thing on the web, and to me, it is a great way to connect with people through visual inspirations that elicit real-life action.

“I love being in advertising because the advertising world is ever changing and full of opportunities” said Mandy. “My favorite part of working for Pinnacle is being able to help clients connect the dots from their business to their marketing efforts and often times introducing a strategy that they hadn’t thought of before or ever dreamed they could afford.” More than three-fourths of the total population will be online in 2012. I was exposed to medicine at an early age because my father is a physician and my mother was a pharmacist. Becoming a physician required a great love for medicine and a great love of people — as well as an extremely supportive family. It is a privilege to take care of patients with medical problems and return them to health, but it is a greater opportunity to educate patients about prevention — like suggesting they schedule their first colonoscopy. I recognize the sensitivity of this specialty and always seek to offer compassionate individualized care to my patients.

Dr. Pisano worked as a dental assistant and dental hygienist before graduating from the University of Florida Dental School in 2005. She opened her Lady Lake-based practice last May.

No one succeeds alone. A woman must have courage and strength no matter what happens… she must believe in herself, not sacrifice her morality or beliefs. “The traditional values are still very important, but roles are changing. What we exude to our children is to be a good role model and old-fashioned work. We want to show that we have successful careers and are great moms. True success is feeling that we are where we are supposed to be in life and serving others.” Morris wants her son, daughters, and granddaughters to have the courage to have a vision — to trust in God’s plan — and the strength and stamina to achieve it.

unique and hard-to-find specialty kitchen products
cooking u a good life “Welcome to KaDee Kay Gourmet Kitchen Products!” That’s the friendly greeting you receive when you walk through the doors of this company, which is located in historic downtown Mount Dora. This undoubtedly sets the tone for a pleasurable and personal shopping experience. As you glance around the store, you are amazed by the unique and hard-to-find selection of cooking and baking products: anise oil, specialty herbs, unrefined salts, and specialty mushrooms, among others. The owners enthusiastically answer any questions you have about the items, leaving you extremely educated by the time you walk out the door. And they are more than happy to special order any product that is not available at the store. By offering a pleasant shopping experience with the hometown service of days gone by, KaDee Kay Gourmet Kitchen Products has become a popular shopping destination for cooking enthusiasts. The company was opened in October 2010 by Karen Monte and her daughters, Danielle Taylor and Kelly Davant — hence the name, KaDee Kay. “We truly are a boutique store where people can come in and feel comfortable having a conversation with us and joking around,” says Karen, a native of Winter Park. “Also, people learn things when they come in here. We are extremely knowledgeable about each product and gladly share that knowledge with customers. You don’t just find something on the shelf and come to the check-out counter and buy the product. You have a conversation with us.”
Most first-time customers become wide-eyed and excited when they see kitchen items they’ve long desired but could never locate. You can purchase shatterproof drinkware, cookie cutters, specialty cooking tools, specialty measuring tools, international baking pans, and kitchen scrubbers. Then there are the popular Chill-It Bags, an excellent way to keep beverages cool, and the Kyocera ceramic knives, which Karen affectionately refers to as the “Cadillac of the ceramic knife world.” In addition, KaDee Kay carries Central Florida’s largest selection of NordicWare Bundt pans. El Ranchito
Vic’s Lunch Truck
We celebrate Cinco de Mayo this month. While taking a trip South of the Border may be out of the question, a trip to El Ranchito in Leesburg is certainly doable and will undoubtedly satisfy your craving for Mexican food. From sizzling fajitas to savory enchiladas to spicy burritos, you’ll enjoy generous portions of authentic Mexican food. Be sure to try the deep-fried ice cream for dessert. The restaurant’s full-service bar offers a nice selection of domestic and imported beer, wine, and — of course — margaritas! You will leave saying, “Fue muy delicioso!” (It was very delicious).
Vic’s Embers Supper Club rarely applies the brakes to an innovative idea. The management team was certainly stepping on the gas when they came up with the latest concept — a gourmet lunch truck. The truck makes lunch stops at various local businesses in central Leesburg, saving employees the time and the hassle of leaving the office for lunch. Reasonably priced and tasty entrees can be purchased, including Philly cheesesteaks, meatball subs, hamburgers, hot dogs, and gourmet salads. Beverages include sweet tea, water, sodas, and Gatorade. If you have 8–10 employees and would like Vic’s gourmet truck to stop at your business, please call 352.728.8989 or 352.636.8940.

Cousin Vinnie’s
World Famous Chicken Wings Watch your favorite sporting event on one of six big-screen television sets. Eat award-winning chicken wings or other tasty items while sipping on your favorite beverage. Test your brainpower during trivia night or sing until your heart is content on karaoke night. These fun activities and much more can be enjoyed at Cousin Vinnie’s World Famous Chicken Wings. Vincent and Cynde Vittoria opened the Christian-based restaurant in Leesburg three-and-a-half years ago. Their meticulous attention to detail has helped the restaurant garner a stellar reputation for exquisite tastes and warm, friendly service. Customers are greeted by the smiling faces of attentive servers who go above and beyond to ensure the dining experience is a positive one. And the care and thoughtfulness that goes into every dish will undoubtedly satisfy even the most discriminate palates. Once famous for its long lines — a sure sign of a good restaurant — Vinnie’s recently underwent a 990-square-foot expansion, increasing the seating capacity from 30 to 98. The décor of the new addition pays homage to all things automotive. Hanging from the walls are license plates, hubcaps, the front end of a classic Ford Mustang, and a race track complete with miniature cars and a checkered flag. This family sports restaurant features a lively, spirited atmosphere where something fun is always happening: Monday is Biker Night, Tuesday is Family Night (kids 10 and under eat free), Wednesday is Trivia Night, and Thursday is Cornhole and Karaoke Night. On Sundays, patrons can purchase wings for cheap (for example, 25 wings for $14.99 or 100 wings for $59.99).
MY EXPERIENCE During my first visit to Cousin Vinnie’s I hesitantly ordered a fresh salad. I say hesitantly because at many restaurants a salad consists of lettuce and a severely limited number of toppings. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when my salad arrived with celery sticks, onions, homemade croutons, fresh tomatoes, and
cheese. The raspberry vinaigrette salad dressing — made from scratch with no preservatives — added delicious tangy flavor to every bite. I then ordered one of Vinnie’s signature appetizers: the sausage and cheese fireballs. The staff rolls the sausage by hand and blends it with pepper jack cheese and fresh chopped jalapenos to deliver an unforgettable taste. Be ready because these fireballs pack some heat. This appetizer is served with a sweet honey mustard sauce. I also treated myself to the peel-and-eat shrimp. While I’ve ordered this appetizer at many restaurants, Vinnie’s peel-and-eat shrimp makes a lasting impression. That’s because the jumbo pieces of shrimp are tossed in six wing sauces: garlic, lemon pepper, Cajun, parmesan, honey kissed, and “Bad to the Bone” Buffalo wing sauce. The delicious blend of wing sauces smothers the entire shrimp, creating a wonderful flavor. Equally enjoyable were the two pieces of soft, warm bread served alongside. I consider myself to be an aficionado of fine chicken wings and I was now ready to put Vinnie’s world-famous wings to the test. To me, the most important part of the chicken wing isn’t the accompanying Ranch or Blue Cheese dressing... I feel it’s the sauce that makes the difference and Vinnie’s sauce is the real deal. The restaurant offers more than 30 unique homemade wing sauces, including Swot (a combination of sweet and hot), Frankenstein (a combination of all the restaurant’s wing sauces), and Train Wreck (a combination of bold, tangy, and spicy). You are sure to find a sauce that satisfies your discriminating palate. And that’s precisely why Vinnie’s fresh, never-frozen chicken wings stand out from the rest. My personal favorite was the Wild Mustard wings, which are cooked with a tangy Southern mustard sauce. Vinnie’s wings are crispy and melt-in-your-mouth good; so it is little surprise that the restaurant has won numerous awards for both its chicken wings and sauces. Not only was the food excellent but, even more importantly, during my meal I was treated just like family.

the loving kitchen Written by Heather Pruett • Photos by Fred Lopez
Sugar and spice and everything nice Five and a half years ago, my husband and I excitedly announced to our families that we were expecting another baby. A few months later, we found out that our son Kycen, the best big brother ever, was going to have a baby sister. My mom was ecstatic that she was going to see another “little Heather” in this world. Although my mother-in-law Marie was also very excited, she was a little bit nervous as well. You see, Marie raised two boys who were involved in football, basketball, hunting, fourwheeling, and all the other “boy” activities you can think of. So as you can imagine, she was a little anxious thinking about all of the possible “girl” activities she would have to partake in. After our announcement, I remember her sweetly saying, “I don’t do hair, nail painting, or tea parties.” However everything quickly changed the moment she held and fell in love with our baby girl, Sadie Grace. And now, five years later, I am amazed that my mother-in-law can braid my daughter’s hair a million times better than I can. Sadie and Marie now have a very special relationship that makes my heart smile. Every Wednesday, my daughter gets to go to Mama and Papa’s house where you will find Marie brushing Sadie’s hair, playing dolls, and sitting down for tea parties. However with all the “girl” activities Marie is unexpectedly enjoying, painting nails is still not on the agenda for Wednesday afternoons. But I feel sure that will change as soon as Sadie looks at Marie with her big brown eyes and says, “Mama, will you pweety pwease paint my toenails?” And that’s when my daughter will come home with the best toenail paint job you’ve ever seen. So if you happen to have a sweet, little girl or granddaughter, plan a tea party and try these yummy recipes. However, I’m not sure what you will enjoy more... the food or the company of your precious little girl. Women and
HEART
DISEASE 1
Can women have heart attacks without typical chest pain?
Yes, women tend to present with other symptoms other than chest pain such as arm, jaw, neck, or back pain. These symptoms can occur with activities such as walking, or bicycling. They may also occur during emotional or stressful situations.
What is different about the symptoms or risk factors of heart disease between men and women?
2
3
Women tend to develop chest pain more often than men that can be associated with vaso-spasctic angina, acid reflux, or non-coronary chest pain.
Like all diagnostic testing in medicine, stress testing has some degree of error. Nuclear stress testing presents an 80% accuracy rate. To determine the need for further diagnostic testing; outside of the results of the stress test; a clinician must look at the symptoms and risk factors associated with the patient to determine if coronary angiography is warranted.
4
I have a positive stress test, do I have heart disease?
Is the prognosis of coronary artery disease the same in men and women?
There are several studies that show women have a worse prognosis for adverse effects than that of men. This is likely due to the fact that women tend to underestimate their symptoms. Then, according to the statistics, only half of all women are likely to call 911 or seek medical attention in an emergency room.

Our Patients Say It Best... “Footcare for people of all ages with active lifestyles.”
MEDICAL & SURGICAL TREATMENT OF: • • • • • • Foot pain can certainly derail a person’s quality of life. Just ask Anne Talbot of The Villages. For several months, she endured excruciating pain that limited her from participating in her favorite hobby — golf — and performing simple, everyday tasks. Eventually, walking became so difficult that she required the assistance of a cane. “I was in pain all the time and had a hard time getting around even with the cane,” she says. “Walking in general was very painful.” Anne’s general practitioner recommended that she visit Dr. Felix Esarey of Tri-County Podiatry. She followed his advice. An X-ray revealed a bone spur. A cortisone shot followed by several weeks of attending Tri-County Podiatry’s physical therapy program helped relieve Anne of her pain. Of course, thanks to Dr. Esarey’s wonderful sense of humor, she also discovered that laughter was an equally effective remedy. “After receiving my cortisone shot, Dr. Esarey handed me a gift certificate for a free ice-cream cone,” she says. “That was indeed a pleasant ending to a wonderful visit because I laughed extremely hard when he did that. When you laugh, you feel better. I enjoyed everything about my visit to Tri-County Podiatry. Dr. Esarey is extremely talented, knowledgeable, and personable. Going to a doctor can often be an unpleasant experience, but the time spent at Tri-County Podiatry was anything but that. I’m back to enjoying life again, and I have Dr. Esarey and his wonderful team to thank for that.”

The “Quietly Perfect” Choice For Great Retirement Living
Legacy of Leesburg IF YOU’VE BEEN SEARCHING for that perfect Florida retirement lifestyle, you’ve probably seen all of the big, flashy, and highly advertised so-called “lifestyle communities” that dot the Central Florida landscape. But you may have missed one of the true hidden gems of Central Florida retirement living because it is… well let’s just say “quietly perfect.” Legacy of Leesburg offers many qualities that are lacking in other better known retirement communities. Uncrowded, quiet, and naturally beautiful come first to mind. That’s because the small intimate neighborhoods of Legacy are nestled amid more than 100 acres of conservation areas and nature preserves, in a private gated community that is well insulated from traffic noise and congestion. Legacy is perfect for those seeking a more relaxing and laid-back Florida lifestyle, but still close to everything good about Florida living. Located on U.S. 27 just south of the scenic mid-sized community of Leesburg, Florida, Legacy offers its residents excellent shopping convenience, easy access to Florida’s Turnpike for a quick trip to Orlando airports and attractions, and outstanding doctors and medical care at the close-by Leesburg Regional Medical Center. What makes Legacy of Leesburg even more appealing is the combination of high quality and affordability that is offered by both its builder and community association. Florida Leisure Communities (FLC), one of Florida’s leading retirement homebuilders for more than 30 years, offers homes ranging from approximately 1,300 to 2,500 square feet in size and priced from just $119,900 to $191,900 (included special opening discounts now being offered). FLC retirement communities are well-known to Central Florida residents and visitors. The company
is now completing SummerGlen in Ocala, Florida, a community that is recognized as one of the top 50 retirement communities in the U.S. by Where To Retire magazine. FLC also developed the well-known Pennbrooke Fairways community in Leesburg. This well-earned reputation made FLC the natural choice to be the builder in Legacy’s final phase. At Legacy, FLC offers its unique “BuildCom” home customization service, which allows you to change your home and add options to make it just perfect for you. You may not need to change much, though, because the homes are already outfitted with loads of quality standard features, including high-efficiency air-conditioning, solidsurface countertops, fully sodded lawns with automatic irrigation, and excellent quality finishes throughout. Legacy of Leesburg is a resident-owned community which makes it much more affordable for daily living. There are no CDD’s, which can drive up the cost of living in many Florida retirement communities. Very affordable association fees give you access to a wide variety of great amenities including a beach-entry heated pool, fitness center, sports courts of all types, and a softball field. If you’ve been thinking about retiring in Florida but just haven’t found the place that feels “perfect” for you, you should check out Legacy of Leesburg. You can find full information and directions to Legacy online at www. legacyleesburg.com or call 352.314.0655 for information. FLC’s sales center and model home at Legacy are now open daily 9a.m. – 5p.m., and Sundays noon – 5p.m.

ICE GETS TO THE HEART OF
ABDOMINAL ANGINA

WHAT IS ABDOMINAL ANGINA? ost people have never heard of abdominal angina. To the general public, angina is a symptom usually associated with the heart. But did you know that the abdominal pain you are suffering from could be abdominal angina, caused by poor blood flow through plaque-filled arteries feeding the abdominal organs? Angina is defined as pain, pressure, or discomfort caused by restricted blood flow through an artery (ischemia). While this discomfort is one of the warning signs of heart disease, it can also be felt in the abdomen when

the celiac, and inferior and superior mesenteric arteries, which branch off from the aorta, become atherosclerotic or filled with plaque. These arteries supply blood to the stomach, small and large intestine, and other abdominal organs. Plaque, which is made up of cholesterol, calcium, and fibrous tissue, builds up in the artery walls and slowly restricts blood flow. As blood flow diminishes, the intestine’s ability to supply needed nutrients to the body through the bloodstream also slowly diminishes, causing the person affected to lose weight and possibly exhibit signs of malnutrition. The first symptoms of this disease, chronic occlusive mesenteric ischemia (CMI), may be abdominal pain, bloating, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, or vomiting. Many people immediately associate these symptoms with other more wellknown gastrointestinal diseases such as irritable bowel disease, gastritis, or colitis. But it can be much more serious — which is why it is so important that this disease be diagnosed early and accurately. GETTING THE RIGHT TREATMENT The physicians and technicians at the Institute of Cardiovascular Excellence (ICE) are experts at diagnosing and treating CMI. “When we see patients with abdominal symptoms who have been checked out by their GI doctor and given a clean bill of health, the first thing we do is check them for CMI,” says ICE physician assistant (PA) Sheila Quintana. “Our ultrasound technicians expertly scan the mesenteric arteries and determine blood flow velocities. If those velocities are elevated, this may indicate narrowing of the arteries. We then schedule an angiogram which will tell us definitively if the patient has CMI.” Not only does the angiogram determine the extent of the problem, it allows a way for ICE physicians to treat the patient as well. “Once the blockages are diagnosed, ICE physicians can then schedule and perform an arterial intervention or angioplasty, where different modalities can be used for treatment. An arthrectomy device is used to gather and remove the plaque from artery walls,” PA Quintana says. “We can also use a balloon catheter device to press the plaque against the artery walls. Then we can insert stents to hold the artery open and improve blood flow to the appropriate abdominal organs.” Once the procedure is complete, the patient may notice either a gradual or fast improvement of symptoms as blood flow returns to the abdominal organs. ICE physicians may recommend lifestyle changes such as cessation of smoking, increase in exercise, or a change in dietary habits, as well as controlling risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and tobacco use in an effort to prevent a future re-occurrence of the disease. “Many times we see CMI in our cardiac patients. Whenever you have plaque buildup in coronary arteries, it is most likely built up in other arteries throughout the patient’s body,” says PA Quintana. “So it is highly likely that anyone suffering from CMI has the possibility of heart disease and vice versa. Therefore we tell the person the same things we would tell our cardiac patients: Lifestyle changes and control of risk factors are important aspects that one can control themselves to help treat and prevent abdominal angina.” THE ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEMS If you are suffering from abdominal pain, bloating, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, nausea, or vomiting, call the experts at ICE. Not only will they quickly and accurately determine if CMI is your problem, if it is, they will treat the disease and get you back on the road to recovery fast.
Dr. Qamar The Institute of Cardiovascular Excellence is a comprehensive cardiovascular center where cardiology collaborates with primary medical care to offer a complete approach to the treatment of every individual. FAST FACT:
The symptoms of abdominal angina tend to be very obvious. Pain episodes usually occur within 10-20 minutes of consuming a meal, with uncomfortable cramping in the abdomen, usually in the middle region or above.

DorothyDILLARD DILLARD A “A couple of years ago I started having nausea after each time I ate a meal. It became so bad that I stopped eating because of the constant discomfort. Luckily, I was a regular patient of Dr. Qamar at the Institute of Cardiovascular Excellence. When my symptoms worsened and I described them to him, he immediately performed an ultrasound that showed I had two blockages in arteries in my abdomen. domen. “He scheduled a catheterization and inserted two stents in the blocked arteries. ries. Within two to three days I was almost completely better. The nausea was gone and I could eat again. n. What a relief. The difference was amazing. “I want to say something about Dr. Qamar and ICE. He has treated me for heart eart disease and he will soon be inserting stents in an artery in my leg. I am so pleased with the care I receive from him. Dr. Qamar treats me as if I am his only patient. He takes so much time with me and explains all that he wants to do and how it will help me. I couldn’t n’t ask for any better care than he gives me. “I am also amazed at his wonderful and caring staff. I honestly believe they are as concerned about my health as Dr. Qamar. They are so professional and thorough. gh. I highly recommend Dr. Qamar and his staff at ICE to anyone suffering from heart art or vascular disease.”

“This event brings a community of pet lovers, businesses, and nonprofit rescue groups together for a great cause,” says Marni Lewis, owner of The Green K9, a company specializing in healthy pet foods and eco-friendly dog products. “People love to do things with their dogs and meet other pet owners. It’s nice to see our local pet rescues working together and educating the public about adopting pets as opposed to buying or breeding them.” Marni and her husband, Paul, officially unleashed the event in 2010. Formerly known as Mutts and Martinis, the event was held at Al’s Landing in downtown Tavares. Because it skyrocketed in popularity, the Lewises realized the need to secure additional space. In 2011, they expanded to Ruby Street and began throwing pet-friendly block parties. The event was renamed Pups on the Patio and is held on the first Saturday of each month (March through September) from 6–9p.m. In March 2012, Pups on the Patio raised a record-breaking

My Old
Kentucky Home WRITTEN BY JAMES COMBS PHOTOS JAMES COMBS
When we think of the Bluegrass State, several things immediately come to mind. Louisville is home to the Kentucky Derby, widely known as the “most exciting two minutes in sports.” Lexington is famous for its picturesque white-fenced fields where thoroughbred horses freely graze. And, of course, the state features a spectacular array of underground caves, including the famous Mammoth Cave, the largest in the world. A native Kentuckian, I returned to my birth state last August. With limited time, I bypassed some of the more popular tourist attractions and instead discovered two hidden gems that embody the state’s natural beauty.
Red River Gorge You need not travel west to enjoy a “Rocky Mountain high.” Simply drive 50 miles east of Lexington to the town of Slade and visit Red River Gorge, which has been affectionately dubbed as “Kentucky’s Rockies.” Located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the heart of the Daniel Boone National Forest, the Red River Gorge features the largest collection of natural sandstone arches east of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. This 29,000-acre wonderland has more than 100 sandstone arches that have been magically sculpted through millions of years of wind and water erosion. In addition, its abundance of towering sandstone cliffs makes it one of the most popular rock climbing destinations in the eastern United States. The beautiful scenery and breathtaking views can be enjoyed

by driving along the 36-mile Red River Gorge Scenic Byway Loop. You’ll begin your magnificent journey by entering the narrow, handcarved Nada Tunnel, which goes through 900 feet of solid rock. The tunnel was built in the early 1900s to transport logs by railroad. Before entering, you must turn on your car’s lights because the tunnel is dark and can only accommodate one vehicle at a time. Beyond the tunnel, you’ll see dozens of signs denoting trails that lead to the various sandstone arches. To truly experience what this magnificent region has to offer, you should exit your car and venture onto the trails. You’ll receive an up close and personal view of the area’s dense hardwood forest, cliffside overlooks, unusual rock formations, caves, and cascading waterfalls. Choose the trails wisely based on your health and physical fitness level. Some trails are less than a mile and require little effort, while others are as long as seven miles and feature various elevation changes. Sky Bridge, measuring 75–feet long and 23–feet high, is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular arches. A short, simple paved path leads to the bridge, which stretches along the top of a narrow ridge. Visitors can walk across the bridge and then follow a one-mile loop that takes them under the bridge and back to the trailhead parking lot. Word of caution: If you are scared of heights and walk across this bridge, avoid looking down. Another popular arch is Rock Bridge, the only one in the gorge to form a bridge over a waterway.
Along the 1.4-mile trail to Rock Bridge is the scenic and postcard-worthy Creation Falls, a 12-foot high waterfall. For a panoramic and spectacular view of the Red River Gorge, consider hiking the .33-mile Chimney Top Trail. Here, you’ll see Half Moon Rock, a unique rock formation that rises several hundred feet above the valley below. You’ll also want to visit nearby Natural Bridge State Park, which is home to the state’s most popular sandstone arch. The 900-ton Natural Bridge spans 78-feet and is 65-feet tall. Adventurous souls who don’t mind an uphill climb can access one of the park’s numerous hiking trails that lead to the bridge. A more relaxing ascent to the bridge can be enjoyed on a half-mile sky lift ride. Once you reach the top, you can follow a short path to Lookout Point, a wonderful place to photograph and view Natural Bridge, or you can walk across the 20-foot wide bridge itself. Plenty of other activities can be enjoyed in the Red River Gorge area, including zip lining, canoeing and kayaking, golfing, rock climbing, horseback riding, and an off-road safari tour aboard a Hummer. Discover this Bluegrass State treasure and learn why locals refer to this area as Red River Gorge-ous.
Cumberland Falls State Park If you enjoy the relaxing sound of
rushing water, then a trip to Cumberland Falls State Park is a must. There’s a reason why Cumberland Falls is often referred to as “Little Niagara.” Located near Corbin in south central Kentucky, this 125-foot wide and 68-foot tall waterfall is the largest in the South, and water flows over the falls at a rate of 3,217 cubic feet per second. Yet, sheer size isn’t its only magnificent feature. On clear nights, a full moon shines through the mist of the waterfall to create the Western Hemisphere’s only moonbow. This arc of light is also known as a lunar rainbow or white rainbow. Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is the only other place where this natural phenomenon occurs. The thundering waters and grandeur of this massive waterfall make your visit worthwhile. Located in the park is the rustic 51-room DuPont Lodge, which was originally constructed in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The lodge offers square dancing every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights and also serves up delicious cuisine in its 300-seat dining room that provides an awe-inspiring view of Cumberland River. Cottages and campsites are also prominent throughout the property. Visitors can explore the area’s natural beauty by hiking on one or more of the park’s 12 trails ranging in distance from a quartermile to 10.8 miles. One trail leads to
Eagle Falls, which plummets 44 spectacular feet into the Cumberland River basin. The park also provides daily guided horseback rides through the surrounding mountains. To see the Cumberland River from a truly unique vantage point, consider taking an exhilarating (yet unintimidating) whitewater rafting trip. Local company Sheltowee Trace Outfitters offers a fun-filled seven-mile trip that begins with a brief upstream paddle to the base of Cumberland Falls, where rafters feel mist coming off the falling water. The adventure then heads downstream into numerous Class II and Class III rapids. Some rapids may be Class IV depending on water levels. Indeed, visiting my birth state was a truly enjoyable visit. Between the genuine Southern hospitality exhibited by Kentuckians and the state’s breathtaking beauty, I realize why I’m so proud to refer to this state as my old Kentucky home.

Word has been circulating about our pledge of excellence in open-heart surgery.
P
eople throughout central Florida are talking about the comprehensive Heart Center at Florida Hospital Waterman. And no wonder. Dr. Gary Allen, fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon, leads our experienced and committed cardiac team. He is skilled in the unique option of “beating heart” surgery, during which the heart is not stopped— meaning less time in surgery and faster recovery. In our dedicated, state-of-the-art Cardiac ICU, each patient is assigned a multispecialty cardiac care team to ensure the best possible outcome. The most advanced heart care, delivered with excellence. That is our pledge.
