From helping to pioneer innovations in small-incision, no-stitch, cataract surgery and implant technology, to being the area’s first accredited outpatient surgery center for eyes, Mid Florida Eye Center is consistently at the forefront of eye care. Our physicians––who are all fellowship-trained––are known for many firsts of their own. For this reason, they are regularly sought after to lead training and research. We’re proud of these accomplishments, but we’re most proud of what we do to put our patients first. We continue to participate in numerous clinical trials so we can provide our patients with the latest in eye care. Our doctors and staff are committed to providing the best possible care for our patients. And although we’ve performed over 130,000 cataract and laser procedures, we still get excited over each patient’s success as if it were our first.

A
fter giving it much thought, I have decided to run for president. As I said last month, I am tired of voting for the lesser of two evils. It is time someone who thinks like most Americans has a chance at the job. I feel if I can just pull in around 44 million write-in votes, I can do it. But I’m going to need your help. Word of mouth is all I’ve got and my campaign fund is at $0. And that is a good thing. No PACs… no Super PACs… no one telling me how to make decisions… just common sense and the desire to make life better. So, what do you get if you write in my name for president in November? I am 56 years old and honestly owe no money to any man or institution — I am completely debt-free — no credit cards, no mortgage, no loans of any kind. I helped my wife raise our three children on $9,000 a year, so I know something about budgeting. I think you will see that I have experienced quite a bit in life and can see the big picture from most angles. I don’t think either of my opponents can claim to have the life experience I have gathered over the years. I have been very healthy and very sick. I was very athletic as a young man, running over seven miles each day and playing most sports. On the flip side, I spent the middle 20 years of my life being labeled permanently, totally disabled by the U.S. government. During this time I lived on food stamps, SSA, and SSI. I was lucky to have the disability system to help me and my family survive as I found the inner strength to find my way back into the workplace. I have been very poor and decently well off. I have been a part of both the “below-povertylevel” group and the middle-class. The one
thing I have not been is wealthy like my two opponents, but I don’t consider that a negative; I personally consider that a plus. I have been an atheist and a religious man. I spent the years from age 11 to 25 as a devout atheist… and I mean devout. I have spent the remaining years as a Christian. Although I now believe firmly in the existence of God and God’s love for me, I know the other side of the coin… and I know why people are there. I understand both sides. I have been a Democrat, Republican, and an Independent and have been a “No Party” for the last decade. In last month’s column I explained this one. I am not a rampant party jumper. I have simply evolved over time into a person who doesn’t want to be labeled. Like you, my views are individual; I am liberal in some ways, conservative in others, and in the middle on most. I see the gray areas of life and understand that truth can sometimes hide in unusual places. I will tell you next month what I think about the most important and sensitive subjects facing Americans today. And if you like my ideas, or at least most of them (since no one believes exactly as you do except yourself) then you need to call, text, Facebook, Tweet, Skype, Instagram, mail a letter to all your friends, pin my photo on your Pinterest board to please Heather, and drop my name. If we are going to get those 44 million write-ins, time is of the essence. Until next month — hold fast…

An act of kindness
As part of its Disney Helping Kids Shine initiative, Walt Disney World Resort awarded the Bay Street Players’ Young People’s Theatre a $10,000 grant. The grant was presented during an event at the Orlando Repertory Theatre that included Mickey Mouse and dozens of Disney VoluntEARS. Accepting the grant were Young People’s Theatre director Amanda Warren, as well as board members Jim Meadows and Tobi Granger. The money will impact the 362 children who participate in the organization’s after-school production classes, summer camp, and the annual production tour that presents free, live theatre to Lake County elementary school students. The Young People’s Theatre was established by Bay Street Players founder Deborah Carpenter 35 years ago. Some graduates of the program have pursued successful careers in the arts, while others have enjoyed lifelong benefits from gaining self-confidence and learning the importance of teamwork. “At Walt Disney World, our vision is to build on our philanthropic legacy by investing in programs that make a lasting change in our community and promote the happiness and well-being of children and families,” says Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations for Walt Disney World Resort.

Bee ready Remember those spelling bees you competed in as an elementary school student? Relive those wonderful (or perhaps not-so-wonderful) memories at Take Stock in Children’s 11th annual Corporate Spelling Bee Fundraiser. You may not spell every word correctly; however, you are guaranteed to be a winner because your participation helps Take Stock in Children purchase Florida Prepaid Scholarships for local students. In other words, participation spells success and helps ease the sting of rising college tuition costs. Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to form teams and participate in the event, which will be held September 6 at Lake Receptions in Mount Dora. An asset to education By introducing the EverFi Financial Literacy Platform to five Lake County high schools, United Southern Bank (USB) is helping educate students on a variety of financialrelated topics. The web-based program uses the latest in new media technologies — video, animations, 3D gaming, avatars, and social networking — to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation. “EverFi is an enjoyable way to learn what we need to know about banking,” says Eustis High School student Breanna Powell. “These are things I’ll use after I grow up.” The 10-unit course offers six hours of programming aimed at teaching, assessing,
A message that is sure to stick Mount Dora High School junior Nick Ioime created the winning design for Safe Climate Coalition of Lake County’s 2012 Sticker Shock contest. This countywide public awareness campaign involves the placement of stickers on multipacks of beer, wine coolers, and other alcohol products that appeal to underage drinkers. The goal is to discourage adults from providing alcohol to minors. In May, more than 9,000 stickers were placed on alcoholic beverages in 41 convenience stores spanning from Groveland to Mount Dora. In addition, 70 posters were placed on cooler doors. This was a collaborative effort between 29 Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) members, 13 Safe Climate Coalition participants, and eight law enforcement officers. Mount Dora High School teacher Billye Kozlowski, who teachers digital design classes, assigns participation in the Sticker Shock contest as a project for students. Ioime is a student in her class, and his sticker design won first place among 90 entries. In addition to being a talented designer, he also boasts a 4.0 grade-point average and plays wide receiver for the Mount Dora High School varsity team.

Name: Ray Velazquez Piece: Hugo Boss Jacket Time: 7:35 p.m. Date: June 2, 2012 Location: Lake Sumter Landing
Story Behind It: Ray’s life is unpredictable, rewarding, and challenging — and for this real estate agent it is like a dream come true. Relocating from Miami to The Villages has been a welcome change of pace, but it still doesn’t take the guesswork out of his daily grind. Impromptu meetings, showings, and closings require a professional appearance on the fly — which is why he keeps this Hugo Boss blazer within arm’s reach. Why It’s Great: Ray’s jacket can add panache to nearly any pair of pants, but getting it right requires some fashion know-how. Light-weight blazers like these look best with similar fabrics. Linen, cotton, or even denim would work well, but skip the pleats and opt for something relaxed instead. Still not sure if you can pull it off? Remember that taking risks can reap handsome rewards… you may find the result to be a perfect fit.

PR BLEMS WITH YOUR PROSTATE? Does this sound familiar? As you grow older do you realize you are getting up more often at night to urinate? Have you come to accept this as an inevitable part of aging as did your father or his father before him?
“Men no longer need to suffer from frequent urination because they are getting older,” says Dr. James Young, a down-to-earth urologist with 29 years of experience at Urology Associates of Lake County in Eustis. Although the cause of these symptoms is most likely an enlarging prostate (BPH), a normal part of the aging process in men, treatment options are more numerous and less invasive than those offered to our fathers and grandfathers. Years ago there were two options for treating an enlarged prostate… surgical excision via an open operation (knife) or much more commonly by performing a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), commonly referred to as a “rotorooter” by patients and physicians. Both required hospitalization as well as major anesthesia and could be fraught with complications such as bleeding, infection, loss of bladder control and even death. “In my career I have performed over 3,000 TURPs; however, I no longer perform any” says Dr. Young. “There are presently too many excellent alternatives to consider a hospital operation for the vast majority of patients with BPH.” “When I see a new patient I perform a physical examination and properly evaluate the patient’s symptoms, thus diagnosing the underlying problem(s),” he says. “Next I describe to the patient what’s normal and then explain what is abnormal with him. Lastly I teach him his treatment options. If I’ve done a good job of teaching, he will select the correct option for himself.” While prescribing medications for BPH can be done by primary care physicians, only urologists are trained to thoroughly evaluate the bladder and prostate
(including ruling out prostate cancer) as well as providing extremely effective minimally invasive office-based therapies as alternatives to lifelong medical therapy. One such option is Prostiva-RF Therapy, a procedure performed by Dr. Young in his office under local anesthesia that usually takes less than 30 minutes. Prostiva utilizes low level radiofrequency energy to ablate (destroy) the obstructing component of the enlarged prostate. “I am very happy with the results I have achieved for my patients using Prostiva-RF Therapy” says Dr. Young, who has successfully treated more than 900 patients with this procedure. “Medtronic is a $13 billion a year publicly traded corporation that perfected the technology for Prostiva and produces the necessary hardware. Recently Medtronic produced an educational DVD for international distribution to inform patients and physicians worldwide regarding the benefits of Prostiva therapy. Seven of the eight patients featured on the DVD are my patients. I am very proud Medtronic selected my practice to feature the benefits of Prostiva-RF Therapy. However it is sort of a bad news/good news thing. The bad news is neither my patients nor myself received a penny for our participation. The good news is Medtronic gave us all the DVD’s we want, so if anyone wants one all he needs to do is drop by my office at 801 Northshore Drive in Eustis and we will give him one!” And with an office staff with nearly as much experience as the doctor, (many have worked with Dr. Young more than 20 years) you don’t spend a great deal of time waiting to see him. “We pride ourselves in being timely in seeing our patients’. We respect our patient’s time
ADVERTISEMENT
as much as we do our own,” adds Dr. Young. “Patients appreciate this; many of our patients tell me I have the best office staff on the planet. I consider that a huge compliment.” So if you are getting up at night and can’t get back to sleep because you are thinking about what may be wrong with you, it’s time to check in with Dr. Young and have him check you out. “Many men accept frequent bladder urges as part of aging. And while it is part of the aging process, it’s not like death and taxes. There is something you can do about it,” he says.

hotshots Nothing but Net(s) Dwight Howard has been a hero, loved by Orlando Magic fans ans since 2004 when he first made his appearance as an NBA player. After 8 years, he has become verbal about wanting to be picked up by other NBA teams, specifically the Brooklyn Nets. However, becausee Howard decided to opt in for his final season instead of out and become ome a free agent, difficulties have arisen. Orlando tried to send Howard d to the Nets, but met with hoops to jump through and snags to work rk out, and eventually ran out of time. The Nets decided to sign Brook ook Lopez with a four year, $60 million deal instead. Now, Howard’s hopes opes of being traded have stalled until January 15 when the new collective llective bargaining agreement allows him to leave the Magic. Rob Hennigan, Orlando’s new general manager, reports that they are looking into moving Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers or the Houston Rockets. “We haven’t ruled out anything. We continue to be process driven. …Again, the mantra is ‘what’s in the best interest for this organization?’” Hennigan tells reporters. And that is just what fans want to hear, that even if we lose Howard, the Orlando Magic will still be able to hold on to their record and even improve next season. www.usatoday.com

Game of Thrones: gets better as more characters are introduced to the world and many left in a brutal fashion rarely seen on TV. 5. Community: ending its third season with a headline grabbing feud, a timeshift change, and a whole new creative team and still touted as the best season yet. 6. Louie: not the usual low-budget comedy show… it’s a collection of short stories about the big questions of life that hits a quiet truthfulness. 7. Archer: the hugely popular prime-time animation show of somewhat competent and sane secret agents fighting a wide range of foes. 8. Aaron Collin’s dying wish was to leave a $500 dollar tip for a random waitress. His friends and family set out to make that request come true. They launched a website to solicit donations and delivered the first tip to Sarah Ward who works at local pizza place in Aaron’s hometown of Lexington, Ky. Once the $500 was reached, the video of the second and now a third waitress receiving the benefit of Aaron’s last wish was posted at: http://aaroncollins.org/. Aaron’s brother, Seth, friends and family have raised an amazing $42,000 to make Aaron’s wish come true… again and again and again. Save this site so you can share the joy of helping to continue Aaron’s legacy and continue to watch as perhaps a deserving waitress in your area receives the tip of a life-time.

OLED is definitely going to be the hottest TV. Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) offers viewers a brighter, highercontrast picture— even at a 180 degree angle. Plus, it is supper thin (1.7mm) and has improved refresh rates and greater efficiency than either the LCD or Plasma TVs. The OLEDs are created with thin films of organic material and conductors that emit a brighter light with electrical current. Future models may be as thin as 0.3mm with flexible, transparent panels. These “Ultimate Display” TVs are so new that release dates and price are not set yet. The buzz is that Sony and Samsung OLEDs will be available in time for Santa to deliver for those who are willing to drop $10,000! Source: http://www.oled-info.com/oled-tv

IN THE HOT SEAT
George Zimmerman Locally, Sanford has become a town divided as controversy rages around what many consider to be a racially motivated shooting. Not only is what happened here a hot topic in Central Florida, it’s a hot topic worldwide. Seventeen-year-old African-American Trayvon Martin was out for a walk on the night of when he crossed paths with 28-year-old multiracial Hispanic George Zimmerman. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch coordinator, was armed; Martin carried a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea. Whatever happened between the two men, Martin ended up dead from a 9mm shot to the chest and Zimmerman has now been arrested and charged with seconddegree murder. As lawyers jockey for legal position, each carefully crafting his client’s portrayal to potential jurors, we are inundated with past videos and photos of both Martin and Zimmerman. In many of Martin’s photos, we see him as an almost cherubic child-like young teen, although media outlets are now beginning to circulate photos that show him as a strong, imposing young adult. Zimmerman, who at first appears disheveled with a scruffy beard and shaved head, now appears in court clean shaven, with budding locks, and wearing expensive suits. No matter how you dress it up, only two people were involved in what happened that night and only one of them is left here to tell about it.
L O C A L
“I did not agree with the protests that in hatt happened hhap Central Florida after the death of Trayvon rayv Martin. I thought it added unneeded controversy to the situation. We were not there to know what truly happened, and there aren’t enough facts to back up whether Zimmerman shot him out of self-defense or as a racial attack. The knee-jerk reactions from the protests were equivalent to a mob scene and unnecessary.” — Carol Peters, Sorrento
A statue of late coach Joe Paterno was removed from the Penn State University campus and he lost his standing as the winningest coach in college football. In response to recent allegations of the sexual abuse of young boys by former coach Jerry Sandusky, the National Collegiate Athletic Association fined the university $60 million, cut scholarships for four years, initiated a fouryear postseason ban, and forced the football program to vacate all wins from 1998–2011.
got a business, you didn’t build that.” — Barack Obama The July 13 comment during a Virginia campaign stop landed the President in some hot water. The Romney camp instantly heated up the airwaves pointing out the President’s blunder, and Obama supporters fired back that it was taken out of context.
R E A C T I O N
“I do not no think it is okay for George Zimmerman to raise moneyy that th he can use for bail, living expenses, and to keep him in hiding. He is being charged with a crime and therefore has to face the consequences. If society allows this, then more people who are charged will be able to bail themselves out of any situation.” — Jerry Sullivan, Sorrento
“I do not believe that the motive for George Zimmerman shooting Trayvon Martin was entirely self-defense or racial friction, but rather that it was a combination of the two. Zimmerman was living in a neighborhood where there were recent break-ins that contributed to his paranoia and made him more aware of his surroundings. That, incorporated with a young man that fits many people’s descriptions of a ‘suspect,’made a horrible result. I believe Zimmerman knew what he was doing in that moment, but that it wasn’t just one factor that caused his action.” — Sarah Files, Eustis

POLITICAL FODDER
“It’s hard to know just how well it will turn out.” — Mitt Romney Romney’s attempt to show his international finesse went up in flames… Olympic flames… with this reference to the London Games in his July 26 NBC interview. This and other comments marred what he hoped would be his world stage debut.
A VERY DARK NIGHT
Shots in the dark In the aftermath of the latest Colorado shooting in an Aurora movie theater, among the stories of survival and loss, the national conversation is turning to… gun control and access to healthcare. Both are major issues in the upcoming election, causing close scrutiny amid a flurry of political posturing. GUN SALES • The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) approved 2,887 background checks between Friday and Sunday after the theater shooting. • The CBI received 1,216 background check requests after the shooting, a 43 percent increase over the previous two Fridays. The cost of medical care and counseling for the survivors and the families who lost loved ones is impossible to predict. HEALTHCARE • Nearly 1 in 3 Coloradans have no or inadequate health insurance. The highest rate is among adults ages 18-34. • Victims ranged in age from 6–54, average age 26-years-old.

MOTHER’S MILK
Breast intentions The May issue of Time started a breast-feeding frenzy. The controversial cover ignited a firestorm — even inspiring some clever bat-parody (above). The flow continued as two military moms, Terran Echegoyen-McCabe and Christina Luna, were photographed breast-feeding in uniform for the support group, Mom2Mom, started by military spouse Crystal Scott. “They’re comparing it to the woman who posed in Playboy in uniform,” Scott told Yahoo! Shine. “We never expected it to be like this.”

The controversy has escalated since conservative justice John Roberts cast the deciding 5–4 vote June 28, 2012. With elections looming in November, you can be sure this incendiary topic isn’t going to cool down anytime soon. If you get sick of hearing about it, we recommend you take two aspirins and call your doctor in the morning — that is, assuming you have insurance.

More Listeners Than Tellers
Cebert Wealth Management Group joins Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.
Your financial team just got bigger!
RECOGNIZING THE VAST POTENTIAL FOR GROWTHINTHEVILLAGES,DALECEBERT OPENED CEBERT WEALTH MANAGEMENT GROUP (CEBERT WEALTH) IN 1998. He started the company from scratch — with no clients and only one employee.
His goal was simple: provide individualized advice, personalized service, and financial planning and investment strategies for those who needed assistance in managing their money during their retirement years. Essentially, he wanted to know clients on a personal level and go above and beyond the call of duty to help them manage and grow their wealth. Dale never wavered from this philosophy, and that has paid big dividends for him and his company. The nationally respected magazine Registered Rep ranked Dale Cebert of Cebert Wealth Management as one of the top 100 Independent B/D Advisors in the nation for the past four years based on assets under management . Dale ranked 32nd in the nation and number one in Florida for 20111. In addition, the company had a national presence, representing 1,650 households in 44 states as of June 1, 2012. And while many wealth management firms have permanently closed their doors or are struggling to produce revenue in these challenging economic times, Cebert Wealth had flourished and as of June 1, 2012 managed $520 million of assets. Realizing Cebert Wealth’s success and its commitment to helping clients preserve their
wealth, representatives from Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, the world’s largest retail brokerage firm, recently recruited Cebert’s team to join the firm. After months of careful consideration, Dale decided that joining Morgan Stanley Smith Barney would help provide the Cebert team with a wide array of tools and services to help them meet their clients’ financial goals and objectives. The transition officially occurred June 18. The team will now be known as the Cebert Wealth Management Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. “As an independent firm we obviously had limited capital resources and we did not have a national brand that people recognized,” Dale says. “This transition is very exciting to us because Morgan Stanley Smith Barney has some of the best intellectual capital on Wall Street, the state-of-theart technology to assist us in managing our clients’ portfolios, and perhaps the broadest investment platform of any firm on the street. A lot of new investment opportunities will be available to us that we would have never had access to had we stayed an independent firm.” Essentially, clients will have the opportunity to receive the best of both worlds: the indi-

vidualized, personal attention of a financial advisory team combined with the financial strength, resources, and scope of a large financial institution. “We’re taking the best of what has made us successful as an independent firm — our high-touch, proactive, relationship-centered approach — and blending that with the resources, technology, and platform of a global wealth management firm with international name recognition,” Dale says. He also states that clients will continue to receive the personal care they did when they were with the independent firm. “We wanted them to know that the changes would in no way change the relationship they have with me or any other financial advisors in our team. We would still help clients in how to allocate their capital and advise them how to manage their investments. This has been a huge win-win for both the team and our clients.” Without hesitation, Dale says joining Morgan Stanley Smith Barney is one of the best decisions he has ever made. “I have made three very good decisions in my life. The first is marrying my wife, Sherrie, 20 years ago. The second one was starting my practice in The Villages and having the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people who reside here. The third best decision is joining Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, which is one of the
world’s leading companies in wealth management services. I’ve clearly been very blessed.” Dale has also been blessed with a team of outstanding professionals who hold the titles of Vice PresidentWealth Management and Financial Advisor. That team includes Jeff Graunke, Brian Hentz, and Chad Noble. Each shares Dale’s philosophy of providing exceptional customer service and building and maintaining longterm relationships. “We are maintaining our team approach to investment management and taking care of our clients,” Dale says. “We’re not changing anything about how we run our business. We are simply adding the backing, resources, and platform that Morgan Stanley Smith Barney brings, which are certainly a significant enhancement to what we had available before.” Another thing that will not change is the company’s unique approach to providing education, community outreach, and customer appreciation events. Cebert Wealth Management Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney hosts quarterly workshops to address timely financial topics relevant to today’s unique economic climate. These workshops inspire and empower clients to make informed decisions when it comes to managing their finances. The team has also in the past taken an active role in sponsoring, sup-

The Garden Gate Tea Room The petite blond was a photojournalist who not only covered the signing of the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel for The Associated Press, but also was befriended by a former aide to Golda Meir. As part of a very intimate journey, and with a plan to document her findings, the Cleveland native also traveled to many foreign lands, retracing the steps of Jews who survived the holocaust and those who had returned or were planning to return to their ancient homeland. It was a journey rich with unabridged emotions — both hers and the people she encountered along the way. The soft-spoken woman returned to Florida in 1998 to edit her work. She purchased a building in Mount Dora and remodeled the space, creating a studio for her editing work and a tea room where people could come to relax and enjoy the company of friends. Meet Karen Sandvick, proprietor of downtown Mount Dora’s Garden Gate Tea Room. As you enter her establishment, all of your senses are bombarded — in a good way. The aromas drifting in from the kitchen, laughter and friendly conversation, a décor that some would call shabby chic, all combine to create an inner sanctum that radiates warmth and peace. The central tea room and Grandma’s Porch are used for general dining. There’s a vintage hat collection, a display of dainty tea cups and other delicate china, an assortment of handmade linens, and a multitude of vintage clothing. Many of those items were donated by patrons. Then there’s The Sanctuary, often used for special events and, in the high season, also provides additional dining space. The Flower Garden is located in the building next door and is used for women’s retreats and other special events. Lastly, there’s the outside venue: The Wedding Garden, where vintage weddings are held.
The welcoming décor, original “fromscratch” recipes, fresh ingredients, and a lot of love from Karen and her staff in the preparation and delivery of the meal, have patrons returning time and again. Touring Garden Gate with Karen provided me the opportunity to absorb the overall ambiance of the place, but finally it was time to place my order. For an appetizer I chose the signature Sherry Crème of Carrot Bisque served with a dollop of cream and toasted almonds. The bisque was incredibly smooth and the splash of sherry was a welcome touch that added yet another layer of flavor to what was already a wonderful dish. Next was Garden Gate’s most popular dish: Herb Encrusted, Rosemary Baked Chicken Pie. As I cut into the dish, I discovered a cornmeal crust hidden at the bottom. Healthy chunks of baked chicken breast were swimming in a to-die-for rosemary cream sauce. I could smell the rosemary before my fork reached my mouth. The dish was topped off with a delicate pastry crust that fell apart in tender flakes as I cut into its surface. Green beans and Garden Gate’s homemade cranberry sauce completed the presentation. Dessert was a homemade peach cobbler. The peaches were clearly the star of the dish; they were not only cooked into the cobbler, but also fresh peach slices were served alongside with a scattering of blueberries and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was an excellent ending to an outstanding meal — one that I won’t soon forget. Karen describes The Garden Gate Tea Room as a “blissful interlude of blessings; a pause in the hectic world we live in; a place of home and welcoming and all things gentle; a cross between grandma’s house and the French countryside.” Well said Karen — well said.

the loving kitchen Written by Heather Pruett • Photos by Fred Lopez
The Loving Kitchen At my house, summertime with the kids means weekly pool parties with friends. Besides opening presents on Christmas morning, this might very well be Kycen and Sadie’s favorite activity. I happen to love it as well, especially because I see my kids with sincere smiles full of pure joy and happiness! But with all of the non-stop cannon balls, swimming, and in-water gymnastics moves, my little kiddos and their friends work up some big appetites. So to make sure everyone stays happy, I am always prepared with a few kid-friendly, healthy, and yummy dishes. If you are planning a pool party or play date, try these easy recipes that are sure to please your little ones… as well as the adults. And for a quick clean up, I always make sure to use plastic plates and utensils — because after a big swim, delicious lunch, and time in the sun, we can get straight to one of mommy’s favorite activities — nap time!
The Loving Kitchen is a next generation cooking show featuring Mount Dora wife and mother, Heather Pruett. Visit Heather and family at www.thelovingkitchen.com.

Back-to-school means buying books for the kids. Why not pick up a few wine guides for yourself so you will know if those 2-for-1 supermarket wine specials are really drinkable? Forget graduation. Learning about wine is never finished because there is always something new. Even sommeliers in upscale restaurants and winemakers at prestigious vineyards must update their knowledge because the world of wine constantly changes. Attending tastings is the best way to learn what you like and don’t like. Once you become a wine lover, though, you may want to take your wine education to the next level — especially if you plan to start a wine collection or if you find yourself in unknown territory when you are looking through hundreds of bottles at the store and not sure which one to buy. How often do you wonder if the $20 bottle really is better than the $8? Selecting a helpful wine book or guide can be just as daunting as buying a good bottle of wine. Over the years, I have amassed a small wine library, and I have bought a few books where the money would have been better spent on a bottle of cabernet. I do have several books that I have reread over and over when I have a question about wine, and I was happy to see them on a recent wine book recommendation list. Although there are hundreds of books about wine, these three classics are still among my favorites: WINDOWS ON THE WORLD COMPLETE WINE COURSE by Kevin Zraly The 2001 edition of this book was a gift when I first began studying wines. Zraly has taught for 37 years at the Windows on the World Wine School, considered to be one of the best schools in the nation for wine service staffs. The easy-tounderstand style begins with the basics, including his “60-second expert tasting tips” to get the most from wine tasting experiences. If you have questions about grapes, regions, or specific wines, Zraly’s book has answers. Seldom do I buy newer editions of books I already own, but Windows on the World Complete Wine Course is an exception. The updated versions only get better and better. The 25th anniversary edition retails for $27.95.
GREAT WINE MADE SIMPLE: STRAIGHT TALK BY A MASTER SOMMELIER by Andrea Immer Robinson A few years ago, one of the first wine clubs I joined used this book as our guide for tastings. Each chapter features suggested wine tastings to help you understand the “big six” varietals: riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, merlot, pinot noir, and cabernet sauvignon. Her advice and tips will help you buy wines with confidence. One of the first women master sommeliers, Robinson convinces readers that becoming an oenophile doesn’t mean becoming a wine snob. In fact, she doesn’t want you to be a snob but rather an educated buyer. I later bought her sequels about pairing wines with food and they, too, are excellent. The hardcover price is $20. LOVE BY THE GLASS: TASTING NOTES FROM A MARRIAGE by Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher This 2002 book is not so much a guide as it is a heart-warming story about a couple’s journey into the world of wine. As young Miami Herald reporters they discovered each other and Blue Nun Liebfraumilch, a popular wine of the 1970s. Their tastes evolved and so did their careers. For more than 12 years, they wrote the popular “Tastings” column for the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). I like to believe my real wine education began with that column. Each week, Gaiter and Brecher gave a little history about varietals or wine regions, and reviewed six or seven budget-friendly to high-end wines. I often took a clip of their WSJ column with me when I shopped for wines. In 1999, the Florida natives created a unique wine holiday called “Open that Bottle Night” on the last Saturday in February, which remains popular with their followers to this day. In 2006, I emailed a description of my “Open that Bottle Night” experience to Dorothy Gaiter and received a personal and inspiring reply. I knew then I wanted to write about wine. The paperback price is $14.95 or Kindle download is $11.99.
NEXT MONTH: Wine-related apps for your smartphone or electronic tablets can help you select a bottle of wine you are guaranteed to enjoy.

THEStyle THE CALL OF
Brandon Johnson didn’t choose the cosmetology tology industry — he says it chose him. Since he was a young boy, Brandon has loved innovation and style and it seemed he was destined to pursue a career in cosmetology. osmetology. This led to his eventually opening his own salon, Royal Elegance, in Leesburg. “Like a painter uses a canvas and paint to create a picture, I use hair, scissors, and curlers to create living masterpieces,” sayss Johnson. “I channel my talent to transform blah to WOW!” Another stylist who has found her calling is Carey Williams. Williams works in the Bibbity Boppity Boutique at the Disney World orld Magic Kingdom — and for her, the calling to be a stylist was nearly as obvious as it was for Johnson. “I grew up watching my stepmom do all thatt fun stuff,” Williams says, describing how as a young girl she watched her stepmom mom styling client’s hair. Now, after completing her own schooling in cosmetology, ology, she says, “I love it! It’s all about being creative and hands on.” Johnson and Williams both agree they wouldn’t ldn’t be where they are today if it weren’t for a stellar education — an education on received through the prestigious cosmetology school, The Salon Professional onal Academy (TSPA). TSPA specializes in providing students with h the tools they need to be successful in the professional beauty industry. Artists maximize their overall potential through specialized training programs, ograms, which provide students with the knowledge they need to succeed d in the ever-changing world of cosmetology. Both former students say the atmosphere is what drew them to TSPA. For Johnson, it was the glitz and glam – “just likee New York,” he says. For Williams, the vibrant colors, the fun and excitement, ent, and the friendly vibe helped her decide. Whatever the reason any of the hundreds undreds of future stylists find to o attend TSPA, all students come away with exactly actly what Johnson and Williams both found there — a priceless education that prepares them for all facets of the beauty industry. Learning how to cut, shape, style, and color or according to a client’s particular needs are just a few of the things students can learn earn from their experience at TSPA. Williams says the educators “made things stick” ck” for her and she regularly uses the specialized techniques she learned at TSPA.. Johnson says learning how to cut at different angles and learning how to createe color are tricks-of-the-trade that helped mold him into the successful businessman man he is today. “I owe it all to TSPA,” says Johnson. “I learned ned invaluable styling techniques that have been instrumental to my success as a stylist.”

through Laser Trim Contours, have distinctive qualities that differentiate them from other body-contouring products on the market. Zerona is used to shrink the fat cells and minimize cellulite while helping to push it through the lymphatic system, ridding your body of unwanted fat. Venus Freeze utilizes heat-activated magnetic pulses and radio frequency waves to assist in the reduction of wrinkles and cellulite. This helps to give back that youthful appearance, the svelte figure, the tight derriere, that radiant and unlined face — the things that may have started to diminish as we go through the aging process. Kristine Howard, a certified technician with Laser Trim Contours says, “I am extremely proud of these two life-changing procedures. I can attest to the fact that clients have seen dramatic improvements in not only their bodies, but their self-esteems as well. It is very important to me that I am with these clients from beginning to end, and am there to watch their
faces light up when they see the results that Laser Trim Contours has given them.” The technicians at Laser Trim Contours, all of whom are extensively trained and certified in the utilization of the Zerona and Venus Freeze, are proud to say that their office is a cut above the rest. Their prices are substantially lower than other similar but less-effective procedures, but what truly sets them apart is the relationships they build. “We only offer these two products in our office, so this affords us the opportunity to offer our clientele a more personalized, intimate experience, something you don’t often see in medical offices, and that is something we are extraordinarily proud of,” says Lori, another technician with Laser Trim Contours.
Perhaps one of the unique aspects of Laser Trim Contours is the procedure rooms. The typical clinical setting of white walls and the smell of rubbing alcohol gives way to something much more aesthetically pleasing. Each room boasts a small waterfall, dim lighting, soft music, candles, and aromatherapy oils to help create a soothing atmosphere for the client — much like a relaxing day at the spa, which is exactly the tone they set out to achieve. “We want people to come in here and feel relaxed, and completely at ease, to see the same faces every time and feel comfortable in their surroundings, like they are at home,” says Lori. The personal satisfaction for Kristine and Lori comes from seeing clients from start to finish. Kristine explains, “When they arrive, most are very unhappy with the structure of their bodies, and for some, exercise just wasn’t working. They come here and in as little as two weeks, we get to see each person blossom from someone who was very body-conscious to someone with renewed self-esteem. We need to live within our means and spend our few remaining capital dollars on technology and buses, not bricks and mortar. Thanks to the recession, we will receive $2.5 million above debt service this year, down from $85 million above debt service just five years ago. It takes $10 million just to tread water every year ($5 million for basic maintenance of our 45 campuses, $2.5 million to replace 1/10 of our buses, and $2.5 million to replace 1/4 of our computers). We are $7.5 million short on annual capital expenses. Because of our plummeting capital revenues, we haven’t spent the money to replace 1/10 of our bus fleet in the last three years — this will cost us in additional maintenance.
And to prepare our kids for the future in our rapidly changing world, we need more technology. We are scheduled to spend $30,000,000 on renovating Eustis Heights Elementary and replacing portables with classrooms at Mt. Dora Middle and Treadway Elementary. We need to use that money to live on for the next four years. By then hopefully we can renew the penny sales tax of which schools get 1/3 ($9 million annually). If the referendum passes, we can then afford to address the needs of our older schools.

Uniform Dress = Safety + Success! Osceola, a very poor county with 70% of their students on Free and Reduced Lunch, implemented “Uniform Dress” in all schools countywide at no cost to the district. This one action reduced discipline referrals to the office by 30%, classroom disruptions by 35%, and gang activity by 75%. In the last three years with Uniform Dress, if you convert Osceola’s high school letter grades to a combined “GPA,” then their high schools have soared from 1.77 to a 3.80 (8 As and 2 Bs) — while ours are mired in mediocrity from 2.29 to 2.42 (4 Bs, 2 Cs , and 1 D). Apparently, feeling safer improves achievement.

Typically, a trip to Lakeridge Winery entails sampling the company’s finest red and white wines and admiring the seemingly endless rows of Muscadine grapes that stretch up and down gently rolling hillsides. This month, though, visitors will receive an added bonus: they can jump feet first into a grape-stomping contest and tickle their toes with flying drops of grape juice. Sticky feet — as well as the constant sounds of stomping and squishing—will be plentiful during Lakeridge Winery’s 18th annual Harvest Grape Stomp. The event, which is being held August 18–19, promises to ooze lots fun for participants. According to Kyle Johnson, the winery’s sales and marketing manager, this month is ideal for grape-stomping because the harvest season for native Muscadine grapes typically begins in midAugust. Leftover grapes from the harvest are used for the grape stomp. Although Lakeridge Winery now boasts high-tech machinery to extract juice from grapes, having a stomping contest allows participants to relive this tradition of a bygone era when juice was removed by crushing the grapes with human feet. “Before the invention of wine presses, people would pick grapes by hand and then stomp on them so they could extract the juice to make wine,” Johnson says. “Having a grape-stomping contest is our way of celebrating an old tradition of how wine used to be made.” So, how does a grape-stomping contest work? Participants climb into a wooden barrel that is half-filled with grapes and situated on an elevated platform. Handrails are placed on each side of the barrel so stompers can balance themselves. Once the competition begins, fancy footwork becomes key as competitors attempt to stomp their way to glory. Those who extract the most juice
after two minutes are awarded prizes such as a t-shirt, glass of wine, or toy. Yes, participants will be “juiced up” following the competition but will have an opportunity to hose off their legs and feet. They may also need to take a breather. “This is actually a good cardiovascular workout,” Johnson says. “You definitely expend some energy during those two minutes.” Never fear, wine enthusiasts. The juice extracted from the competition goes into a compost pile by day’s end and is not used in the winemaking process.
Have a ‘grape’ time The event includes plenty of other activities for those who have cold feet about getting sticky feet. Attendees can enjoy live, continuous music throughout the weekend. Saturday’s lineup begins at 10a.m. with the Groovemasters, who specialize in jazz, funk, R & B, and Latin. The Robert Harris Group, a premier jazz group in Central Florida, will perform at 2p.m. On Sunday, visitors can enjoy the delightful music of Beautiful Bobby Blackmon and the B3 Blues Band, which is known for its contemporary Southern soul and blues music. The group performs at 2p.m. Visitors can also take guided tours of Lakeridge Winery’s 28,000-square-foot, Mediterranean-style facility. During the tour, guests will see the large stainless steel tanks where wine is fermented and stored prior to bottling and also learn about every step of the winemaking process. In addition, they will be treated to a majestic view of the vineyard that stretches across the beautiful 127-acre property. At the conclusion of the tour, visitors assemble at a tasting counter, which looks similar to a bar minus the seats. There, they sample a variety of Lakeridge Winery’s popular red and white award-winning wines made from Muscadine and hybrid grapes. The tour guide explains what foods complement each individual wine. The event also features an arts and crafts show, and plenty of food vendors will be available. Of course, Johnson encourages everyone to give grape stomping a try. After all, it is a barrel of fun — and if you have never tried it, maybe it’s time to get your feet wet. Lakeridge Winery is located at 19239 U.S. Hwy. 27 in Clermont. It takes many people to provide quality, compassionate and personal medical care PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS (PA) and ADVANCED REGISTERED NURSE PRACTITIONERS (ARNP) play a critical role. PAs and ARNPs are the unsung heroes of a physician’s practice. Their mid-level medical status enables them to treat patients much as a physician would, but their schedules allow them to take the extra time with a patient that a busy physician just doesn’t have in today’s hectic world. PAs and ARNPs are licensed healthcare professionals who practice medicine under close
physician supervision. Much like physicians, PAs and ARNPs perform exams, order and interpret diagnostic tests, diagnose illnesses, initiate and manage treatment plans, counsel patients on all aspects of preventive health care, and prescribe medications. PAs may also assist the physician during surgery. They are trained to work closely with physicians and complement physician care in all respects. PAs complete medical based education that is very heavy in pathophysiology of the human body and have more advanced
training from a purely scientific standpoint, while ARNPs have a deeper social science training that grows from the unique theories that are taught through the nursing programs. This gives ICE patients the best of both worlds: the latest in specialized technological medical care and a nurse’s caring and compassionate bedside manner that treats the patient as a person, not just a patient. “Our PAs and ARNPs enable us to provide the best possible integrated healthcare available today,” says Dr. Asad Qamar.
KevinNOON ARNP Kevin Noon started his journey into cardiology 18 years ago when he was one of Monroe Regional Medical Center’s youngest ICU nurses. He worked in the cardiac critical care unit for five years while he finished studying for his Master of Science in Nursing degree at the University of Florida, graduating in 1998 as an ARNP. Since then, Noon has worked in the fields of asthma, allergy, sleep, and obesity medicine. He joined Dr. Qamar’s practice four years ago and has been enjoying cardiology ever since. “What is so wonderful about working here at ICE is the fact that when Dr. Qamar takes on a new mid-level healthcare worker such as a PA or ARNP, he puts them through a rigorous training program that teaches them his “recipe” or method for treating his patients. Then the trainee does six months of rounds with Dr. Qamar that is similar to a miniresidency or an apprenticeship. Only when Dr.

“I consider the care and the expertise they provide to be on level with that of a physician. They are very down-to-earth and have such a great relationship with each patient. Many times, as a physician, I find that my time is stretched, but I have such confidence in, and work so closely with, our PAs and ARNPs that I know each one of our patients is getting just as much care from them as I am able to provide. I would trust each of my medical team’s abilities with my own family members.”
Qamar feels the PA or ARNP is totally ready, will he allow them to begin treating patients. Even then, there is very close collaboration between the doctor and his new worker. Dr. Qamar is very particular when it comes to his patients and makes sure each one receives the best care we can possibly give. “We, the PAs and ARNPs, become an extension of Dr. Qamar. We become his eyes, ears, and hands at his various offices. When he is in the catheterization lab, we will be in one of the other offices taking care of ICE patients just as if he was there. This allows us to reach more people while delivering the quality care Dr. Qamar brings to his practice… all the while under his indirect supervision. If we have any issues at all concerning patient care or test results, Dr. Qamar is right there with the guidance and answers we need. And that’s why I love working here at ICE.”
“Kevin Noon is my guardian angel. He walked into my hospital room, discovered me in cardiac arrest, and saved my life. You won’t find a better nurse practitioner anywhere and if it wasn’t for Kevin — I wouldn’t be here today.” — TracyDUBOIS
JoseSOCARRAS PA-C Jose Socarras enjoyed his job at Mercy Hospital in Miami as a medical lab technician so much that he decided to attend medical school. Following graduation from Auton University at Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Socarras returned to Miami and Mercy where he gained the status of physician’s assistant and spent the next 17 years assisting in thoracic and vascular surgery. He has participated in open-heart procedures and heart transplants. Socarras’ love of horses brought him to Central Florida when he bought a horse farm in Micanopy. He then began to work at Ocala Regional Hospital and now has taken the next step in his medical career, a position at ICE. “I love it here,” PA Socarras says. “Working with Dr. Qamar, Kevin Noon, and Sheila DePaolo is such a pleasure. We are such a great teamand everyone is so helpful.”
SheilaDEPAOLO PA-C As a small child, Sheila DePaolo remembers her mother breaking her nose. When her mother returned home from the hospital, 4-year-old Sheila immediately took over her care, making sure she was comfortable and well cared for. Twenty-one years later, she is still taking care of people — but on a much larger scale. “I have always loved taking care of others and I am simply fascinated with the human body,” says DePaolo, now a physician’s assistant (PA) with the Institute of Cardiovascular Excellence (ICE). “Since I was young, I have known exactly what I wanted to do and I am so excited to be fulfilling my dreams.” PA DePaolo was born in Connecticut and has lived most of her life in Florida. While attending Forest High School in Ocala, she was dually enrolled at Central Florida Community College. During this time, and as a prime example of her untiring work ethic, she worked as a clerical assistant in a physician’s office. It was here PA DePaolo first encountered a physician’s assistant and quickly decided to pursue it as a career. “I love the responsibility that comes with being a PA,” she says. “Physician assistants are educated and trained to know and practice all the different healthcare specialties, allowing a broad foundation of medical knowledge. PAs have the
“My husband, Francis, recently passed away after suffering from COPD for many years. When he was hospitalized, Jose Socarras visited him in the hospital every day. He treated Francis with the utmost respect and kindness, while keeping us both carefully informed of every step he would take in my husband’s treatment. I am so pleased with the care and concern he afforded us through such a difficult time.” — PatDINARDI
freedom to work with the entire patient and I love that.” Following community college graduation, she graduated from the University of Florida with her Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Cellular Science and enrolled in the physician assistant school at the University of Florida. She graduated with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies at the young age of 24 and immediately began her career as a PA at ICE in 2011. “I have been here for one year and I absolutely love it,” she says. “As a PA, I work very closely with Dr. Qamar, who has such a passion for helping and teaching others, no matter who the individual. He has certainly passed this trait on to his mid-level providers. I enjoy being a part of such a professional team that focuses so much on the care of the patient.”
“The only word I can use to describe Sheila DePaolo is extraordinary! She is kind-hearted, understanding, and she takes the time to sit and talk with me to fully explain my treatment. Extraordinary!” — ThelmaGHIGLIOTTY

Our Patients Say It Best... “Footcare for people of all ages with active lifestyles.”
MEDICAL & SURGICAL TREATMENT OF: • • • • • • After undergoing quadruple bypass surgery in 1994, Jose Sierra was told by cardiologists that walking was one of the best ways he could keep his heart healthy. Sierra followed that advice for years. However, not long ago he began to experience pain in both his heel and on the bottom of his foot while walking, which made the task extremely painful and difficult. “I could only walk about one-and-ahalf blocks,” he says. Sierra made an appointment at Tri-County Podiatry. Suspecting something wasn’t quite right, Dr. Johnny Wu ordered an arterial test. The test revealed that Sierra was suffering from peripheral artery disease. He had 100 percent blockage in his left leg and 90 percent blockage in his right leg. After being treated for the problem and regaining normal circulation, his foot pain disappeared. “I had been to other podiatry practices but nobody had ever considered ordering an arterial test on me,” Sierra says. “I’m so fortunate Dr. Wu has a good clinical eye because he very well may have saved my life. My case is a great example of how Dr. Wu goes above and beyond to care for and treat his patients to the best of his ability. Thanks to him, I’m back to walking painfree and enjoying life to the fullest.”

I had a knee replacement with bad results that left me in chronic pain. My physician referred me to the pain clinic for medication management. They started me out on low doses of pain medication, monitored me very closely, and adjusted my medication as necessary. They are accustomed to working with patients in pain and the office is very quiet and welcoming. I am so pleased.” — Mary Roberts
Why suffer needlessly? W MEDICATION MANAGEMENT: When it comes to properly controlling chronic long-term pain, medications are vitally important. For many patients, medication is all they will need to live comfortable, quality lives. There are four classes of pain medications we use to control pain: 1. Non-steroidal antiinflammatory medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Celebrex, and Mobic. 2. Local anesthetics such as lidocaine, Xylocaine, and Novocain. 3. Opioids such as morphine, hydrocodone, Dilaudid, Oxycontin, and fentanyl. 4. Co-analgesics such as Neurontin, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, Ultram, and Tylenol.
