Cancer can’t cripple love, shatter hope or conquer the spirit. Those are just a few of the things Susan learned through her battle with not one, but two types of cancer. At times, she was so fatigued that she lost interest in the hobbies she loves, but she never lost faith. Working with her team of specialists, Susan got the advanced treatment and emotional support she needed. She’s now strong enough to offer that same support to others with cancer, showing them exactly what cancer cannot do. We helped Susan write her success story. Let us help write yours. I’ve learned a lot about what cancer can do to you. But I’ve learned even more about what it can’t.

Hard to believe it’s already been four years since our last leap year, but here we are again, getting ready to observe February 29. Although the reason leap years occur is a bit scientific and technical, in reality, it all boils down to this: You get one extra day to make a difference this year. So, do something you’ve always wanted to do, whether that’s a much-anticipated outdoor excursion or something as simple as cleaning out your closet. The choice is yours. It’s your day—use it well!

Speed skater Paige Schwartzburg is chasing her dream, once again. › By

For this 25 year old, speed skating isn’t just a hobby; it’s a way of life and a privilege she’s fought to keep.

At 7 years old, Paige Schwartzburg strapped on inline skates for the first time. She met speed skating coach Renee Hildebrand when her brother had to undergo physical therapy. Hildebrand was her brother’s therapist, and Paige saw a picture of the coach’s skating team on the office wall.

“I told her that I could beat all of them,” Paige says.

So, Paige started skating under Hildebrand’s coaching at Skate Mania, eventually competing on Team Florida. As Paige’s skills improved, she found herself placing in the top three at competitions. But, when she was 14 and a freshman at Trinity Catholic High School, things changed.

“We had nationals that year, and unfortunately, I made some bad decisions at that competition, resulting in my parents taking skating away from me,” she says.

She transferred to Forest High School until her junior year and then decided to get her GED. She couldn’t shake the thought of skating, often wondering where she would be if she hadn’t had to quit. In 2010, her grandma helped her get back into it.

“She said, ‘Would you be willing to stop getting into trouble and leave all your friends and family behind to skate again?’” Paige says. “Of course I said ‘yes,’ but I knew that was just a dream that wouldn’t happen.”

Out of shape and without funds, the Ocala native packed her bags. She and her grandma were moving to Salt Lake City in one week.

“I was almost scared because I had never moved away from my family or friends, and I was going to be completely on my own trying to pursue a dream I had a long time ago,” Paige says.

Paige started all over again in a “learn to skate” class, because this time she was learning to skate on ice. The next year she moved up to the Facilitated Athlete Sport Training (F.A.S.T.) team, and four years later she made the national team. She quickly moved up to the World Cup team and came in sixth place at her first World Cup competition this past December.

“My biggest goal is to bring home a medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics,” she says.

Introducing The Next Dimension In Early Detection And Diagnosis

with Genius™ Tomosynthesis

3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, enables our Board Certified radiologists to capture multiple images from the same scan, allowing our doctors and yours to view your breast tissue in greater depth and detail than ever before.

3D mammography is more accurate than traditional mammography, offering a far better chance of discovering cancer in its earliest stages and eliminating stressful false positives and callbacks. It’s the most important advancement in the fight against breast cancer in 30 years. Because this technology is approved by the FDA, it’s covered by most insurance, and as a screening mammogram, is available without a doctor’s referral.

So next time you’re due for a mammogram, opt for the advanced standard of care you’ll find only at RAO.

On The Hunt

Lily has a nose for rats. In fact, the 4-year-old Airedale and goldendoodle cross is a master at it.

Competing in barn hunt, a relatively new canine sport, Lily achieved her RAT Master designation after only eight months of competition. In 2015, she earned her Barn Hunt championship title (RATCH) and then, on January 2, 2016, added a Barn Hunt championship excellent title (RATCHX).

“A friend told me about barn hunt,” says Becky Moses, who owns 85-pound Lily. “I’ve always done obedience work with my dogs and thought it sounded like fun.”

Based on the history of dogs being used to rid farms of vermin, barn hunt was developed by Robin Nuttall and is open to any dogs, purebred or mixes.

In barn hunt, dogs have to sniff out domestically raised rats safely enclosed in crush-proof aerated tubes hidden in a straw or hay bale maze. The tunnels are 18 inches wide and approximately 22 inches high. The catch is that in addition to the rat tubes, there are also litter and empty tubes. The dog, who competes with no collar and leash, has to correctly find the rat tube within a certain time limit. There are novice, open, senior and master divisions; each has a different number of tubes and time limit. Dogs compete in small, medium and large divisions.

Moses and Lily began attending training classes at Lorri Griffin’s Morriston-based G2 Barn Hunt facility in the winter of 2014.

“At first Lily wasn’t that interested,” says Moses. “But we kept going to the training classes. She started enjoying it and then got very good at it.”

In September 2015, Moses and Lily competed at the Barn Hunt National at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Missouri. Invited dogs are tested in a series of

courses over three days. In hurdles competition, the dogs run down an 80-foot enclosed lane, jumping over little plastic pipe hurdles on their way to three tubes strapped into a wooden cradle. The dog has to correctly pick out the rat tube. Lily’s best average time of two runs earned her the national hunt hurdle champion title in a field of 200 dogs.

“Lily is a very smart dog with a great nose,” says Moses. “The barn hunts are a great way to have fun with your dog. Our next goal is an overall barn hunt champion title.”

Room To Improve

Each month we create a new challenge for our readers to try to improve their health and wellness.

This month is a little different—and may call for a little home improvement. Pick a room: your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, anything. It’s time for some sprucing up!

The Issue

Between the colorless walls and the water rings decorating your coffee table, it’s a wonder you can even tell your house apart from an office cubicle. Guests are unimpressed, your parents are even less amused and, worst of all, it’s not getting any better.

The Challenge

Open the curtains and grab some color swatches—it’s time to go pillow shopping. Here are a few ideas that are cheap, innovative and cute. After all, a few different hues go a long way.

Handle it

Rummage through thrift shops and garage sales for mix-matched, vintage knobs to replace your current kitchen (or bathroom for that matter) hardware. Don’t be shy. Consider cabinets, dressers and just about anything else you seem to open a lot. This fancy trick adds character to just about any house.

Fabulous fabrics

Plain, polka dot, plaid, the curtain options are endless. Who needs blinds when you can transform a room with the help of some fabric? Not to mention the extra light and vitamin D.

Knock, knock

Have an old door with windows? Maybe a palette your office isn’t using? Take it home and

turn it into a coffee table. Or hang it on the wall to display family photos. Paint it a great shade of yellow or pale pink to add a splash of color to any room. Some of Sherwin Williams’ most trendy colors right now include Goldfinch and Coming Up Roses.

Accents

And we aren’t talking British. Choose one wall to paint or wallpaper for a pop of color sure to grab everyone’s attention.

Throw in some pillows

Use textiles like throw blankets, pillows and rugs to coordinate and bring different colors and patterns together. A cozy house will make guests feel right at home.

Forget art auctions

Interior designers swear by this idea. Go on a nature walk and pick out a branch that could serve as a nice accent piece for your wall. Or try picking some smaller branches and displaying them in a vase filled with river rocks. Spray painting the twigs makes for a fun DIY project, too.

Light on the eyes

White string lights will give your space a festive look year round. Feeling especially creative? Try spelling out your name or the word ‘love’ on your bedroom wall. Not so creative? Try stringing them on the back patio or in a large potted plant for a touch of soft lighting.

Top Notch!

Ocala Health recently announced that Ocala Regional Medical Center and West Marion Community Hospital have been recognized as a 2014 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States.

Ocala Regional and West Marion were recognized as part of The Joint Commission’s 2015 annual report for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. Ocala Health’s hospitals are among 1,043 hospitals in the United States to achieve the 2014 Top Performer distinction.

Better Than Ever

Ocala Fire Rescue recently accepted the keys to a vehicle for use by the department’s accelerant detection team. After obtaining a K-9 through State Farm’s Arson Dog Program, the insurance company made sure OFR representatives learned of opportunities to obtain a vehicle for their accelerant detection team through non-profit organizations. It was by way of research and guidance that the Recycled Rides program was discovered. Recycled Rides, a program of the National Auto Body Council, located a 2008 Honda Pilot, which would serve the needs of OFR’s accelerant detection team.

Welcome, Welcome!

Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS), a leading community oncology/hematology practice in the state of Florida, recently announced that Sarah Cevallos has been named chief revenue cycle officer. FCS offers a full range of oncology and hematology services, including clinical research and the use of evidence-based medicine and proactive patient support services.

FCS CEO Brad Prechtl said, “Sarah has consistently demonstrated leadership qualities that have earned the respect of her peers and the employees in the departments she oversees.”

Big Savings Ahead

Food For All

VW of Ocala and sister store Gatorland Toyota recently held the annual “Friends Feeding Friends” food drive and collected 5,100 pounds of food, equating to 3,923 meals. The food was donated to The Bread of the Mighty. Loretta Griffs, director of community outreach, states, “This is the largest food drive this year and possibly the largest drive in the history of the food bank.” The food was distributed to needy families throughout Marion and Alachua counties.

Race For A Cause

MDsave and Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center are working together to help local residents without insurance or with high-deductible health plans save money and get more of the medical care they need. MDsave’s website allows patients to geographically search by procedure, provider, specialty or ailment and compare pricing. Just choose the best option, add it to your cart and check out online—the price posted is what you pay. The price includes all costs associated with the procedure, including physician billing, and patients will not receive another bill.

“In today’s marketplace, health care can be confusing and expensive, especially for consumers who are uninsured or carry high-deductible insurance plans,” said Vickie Magurean, CFO of Seven Rivers Regional. “This service can help these patients access the same quality health care they have come to expect at our hospital at a lower cost.”

The 7th Annual Can Classic Road Race to benefit Citrus County Blessings will take place on Saturday, February 27. Registration and packet pickup begins at 7am, with the 10K starting at 8am, the 1-mile walk starting at 8:05am and the 5K starting at 8:15am. The race will begin at Nature Coast Bank located at 2455 North Citrus Hills Boulevard in Hernando. An overall individual male and female award will be given as well as awards in various age groups. Plus, don’t miss the post-race raffle for a 40-inch flat-screen TV and Publix gift cards. Find out more and register online at drcsports.com.

It’s Getting Hot in Here

It’s due to many factors, but researchers at Tulane University investigated the number of babies born nine months after hot days (80 degrees and up) between 1931 and 2010. Each time, there were 0.4 percent fewer births, which equals about 1,165 little bundles. Over time, this could mean about 100,000 fewer births each year. Maybe we should crank up the AC. It’s for the population.

INSIGHT ADVICE SOLUTIONS HEALTHY PAGE 1 INSIGHT

What’s That?!

It’s capable of amazing things, but, sometimes, its little quirks go unexplained. We’ve debunked a few seemingly pointless body parts and explored just what those weird marks and gross substances might be.

What are those white objects on my tonsils?

Those, dear friend, are tonsilloliths, aka tonsil stones. They’re calcified little rocks that form when food particles and bacteria get stuck in the grooves of the tonsils. They’re not dangerous but can cause bad breath and even discomfort if they become large. About one in five Americans have them and don’t even know! They’re easily removed at home with a cotton swab and some careful prodding.

Why do I have skin tags?

Good news: They’re harmless. Skin tags are associated with aging and being overweight, and almost everyone will have one or more in their lifetime. They’re usually caused by skin rubbing against skin, which is why they’re found near the eyelids, armpits and under breasts. They can be frozen or removed at a doctor’s office.

Why are new freckles appearing on my skin?

Freckles are inherited but seem to multiply with sun exposure. Although those with darker complexions have more even distribution of melanin, when fair-skinned folks catch some UV rays, their melanin can pop up in deposits and create freckles. They’re typically benign, but if you see numerous new freckles or are concerned with changes in your skin, see a dermatologist for a skin cancer screening.

Why do I have white spots on my nails?

Contrary to popular belief, white patches on the nails are not usually the result of a vitamin C or zinc deficiency, though they can be in rare instances. More commonly, spots are the result of impact or injury to the nail bed. The spot will appear long after the trauma, so it can be hard to remember what caused it, but rest assured, it’s nothing serious and will grow out over time.

What are the white markings on my teeth?

Unlike the spots on your nails, these marks aren’t caused by your teeth clinking a glass too hard. They’re most commonly caused by fluorosis, a condition that damages the enamel by taking in too much fluoride as teeth are developing during childhood. This process is called hypomineralization. They may also be the result of excessive calcium released during the growing process of the tooth. The spots can be treated using tooth whitening, microabrasion or veneers in more extreme cases.

Ocala Tries Opdivo

Ocala Oncology, now Florida

Cancer

Affiliates, has always had an active clinical trial program for research.

“We do most of our research through UF Oncology. I’m the lung cancer medical director in that program, so usually if there’s something interesting going on, I’m able to get it here in Ocala,” explains oncologist Dr. Craig Reynolds. The latest trial? Opdivo, an immunooncology treatment first approved by the FDA in March of last year.

Dr. Reynolds began an Opdivo trial to offer this cutting-edge opportunity to Ocala patients, like Lynn Rodriguez, who has lung cancer. It’s the most deadly cancer in the United States and worldwide, both aggressive and treatment-resistant, as it’s often associated with smoking and becomes tough against toxins in cigarettes.

Lynn’s trial was meant to demonstrate the drug’s safety and also investigate how long patients should undergo immunooncology therapy.

“I was diagnosed March 19, 2010 and went the typical route of radiation and chemotherapy with Dr. Reynolds,” says Lynn. “I did a lot of chemos that would work for a while and then stop. They gave me side effects I didn’t like: aches, pains and redness.”

It improved everything. Half the battle is you go to treatment, go home and you feel terrible. With this, I could go home and didn’t go straight to sleep. I started making dinner again.

After battling the side effects of chemo, Dr. Reynolds asked Lynn if she’d like to join the trial. Human bodies have cells called tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes that attack cancer cells. To survive the immune system, cancer expresses proteins to disguise itself from lymphocytes. Opdivo blocks the cancer’s ability to do this, giving back the immune system’s power without the negative results. Lynn’s side effects disappeared almost immediately.

“I was taking the medication for about seven months. Now I’m being monitored to see how long it holds,” she explains. Opdivo changes the immune system-cancer interaction, so some of its changes persist even when patients stop the medication.

“It improved everything. Half the battle is you go to treatment, go home and you feel terrible. With this, I could go home and didn’t go

straight to sleep. I started making dinner again,” says Lynn. On Opdivo, she could attend her son’s baseball games and visit her other son in Tampa. She’s back into jogging, something chemo made her too tired for.

Research is ongoing and will try to determine optimal dosing and why some patients respond better than others. Lynn hopes immuno-oncology will become accessible to future patients instead of chemo.

“The trials are important—if you don’t have people trying them, how’s the person down the road going to get any help? I hope up-and-coming patients may have a better chance at doing immunotherapy. Opdivo compared to chemo has been wonderful. I only see Dr. Reynolds every three to four months for a checkup to make sure I’m still in remission. March will be six years.”

Since the first successful laparoscopic surgeries (a type of minimally invasive surgery) in the 1980s, procedures have only become more sophisticated. We’ll shed some light on how this kind of surgery works and how it benefits patients.

How It Works

Minimally invasive surgery involves making small incisions instead of the big cuts of traditional “open” surgeries. According to Declan Hegarty, M.D., of Inverness Surgical Associates, the first colonoscopy was performed in 1969, and the colonoscope that was used could send and receive light, allowing doctors to see images of the process.

“This led to the ability to perform biopsies, stop bleeding and screen for cancer using the same tool, which most will agree has saved countless lives,” says Dr. Hegarty.

Minimally invasive surgeries are done through either laparoscopy or robotic surgery. (Though the term laparoscopy is often used to describe minimally invasive surgery generally, it is also a specific type of surgery.) A laparoscopy involves inserting small surgical tools and cameras through incisions to perform surgery, and robotic surgery calls for a surgeon to sit at a console and control laparoscopic

instruments. Though a laparoscopy may seem to be more hands-on, robotic surgery gives the doctor a magnified, 3-D view of the surgical site, allowing for great precision and flexibility. Now, these surgeries can be performed in all areas of the body, and different procedure types include endoscopy (digestive tract), arthroscopy (joints), laparoscopy (abdomen), thoracoscopy (chest), urethroscopy (urinary tract) and bronchoscopy (respiratory system). Minimally invasive surgery is being used to treat everything from kidney stones, hernias and brain tumors to Crohn’s disease and aortic aneurysms.

Advantages

Because minimally invasive surgery uses small incisions instead of big cuts, recovery is faster, pain more tolerable and scarring less visible inside and out.

“Curiously, I think the original motivation of surgeons to perform procedures with less invasive techniques was to produce less ugly scarring, but in my practice, patients appreciate having less pain, shorter hospital stays and getting back to full activity much sooner, and [they]

are less concerned by the size of the scar,” says Dr. Hegarty.

If you’re able to undergo minimally invasive surgery instead of open surgery, it will likely be done as an outpatient surgery, meaning you’ll be able to go home soon after.

“The reduction in the size of the incision undoubtedly results in fewer additional complications, such as heart attack, stroke and blood clots to the lungs, which were often responsible for the death of patients—elderly patients in particular,” says Dr. Hegarty.

That means safer recoveries with fewer complications, and we’re all for that!

Welcome To The Gene Editing Revolution

It sounds like science fiction: Snip out a bad gene, insert a good one and stop cancer in its tracks. But this past fall, a British baby named Layla Richards made history when doctors used genetic engineering technology to knock out the cancer that threatened her young life.

Layla had a severe and unusual form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Diagnosed at 14 weeks, the baby girl received chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. But her cancer was aggressive and resisted treatment. Layla’s parents asked doctors to try anything—and physicians at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital turned to a technique never before used against cancer in humans: gene editing.

The gene-editing technology, so new that it had been studied only in mice, removed a gene from the spreading cancer cells that protected them against destruction by Layla’s immune system, and it beefed up cancer-fighting immune cells in her system so that they could seek out and destroy the nowvulnerable cancer cells. The beefed-up immune cells also had genes edited into them that were able to protect them from the drugs Layla was taking. Soon after her first birthday, Layla received the infusion. For three months, the

enhanced immune cells roamed her body, wiping out her cancerous cells. Layla then had a successful bone marrow transplant. Doctors announced in November that she is cancer-free, calling it “almost a miracle.”

Gene editing is a fastmoving field that holds promise for improving health in many ways. A few weeks before Layla’s story made headlines, the Cleveland Clinic, where Dr. Mike is chief wellness officer, named a gene-editing technique to the Top 10 Medical Innovations for 2016. Someday soon, gene editing could help wipe out illnesses that are caused by a single, inherited gene—diseases like cystic fibrosis, hemophilia or breast cancers triggered by one of the BRCA genes. And it may help to edit out

problem genes that develop later in life, called somatic mutations. It’s also exciting because the ability to edit genes lets researchers learn more than ever about problems made worse by multiple genes, such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

Here’s a short list of some exciting projects: OBESITY GENE: Researchers at Harvard University are looking at whether CRISPR (a treatment that uses protein to locate and edit genes) can be used to snip out an “obesity gene” that governs the metabolism of fat cells.

PANCREATIC CANCER: Stanford University researchers are using CRISPR to study how this quick-spreading, hardto-treat cancer develops.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: Lifestyle choices play a big role in blood-pressure problems, but your genes are involved, too. University of Iowa scientists are zeroing in on specific genes in hopes of learning how to edit out those that promote high blood pressure.

HEART DISEASE: The Montreal Heart Institute is leading an international effort to pinpoint culprits and how they work. They can edit one gene—or a family of genes—to see if that helps eliminate heart disease.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE: Some genes boost risk for early Alzheimer’s, while another—a variant of the APOE4 gene carried by one in five of us—doubles the risk for this dementia later in life. Massachusetts General Hospital researchers are looking to gene editing to replace that APOE4 gene and find other ways to treat this form of dementia.

Superior Cardiac Rehabilitation At Life Care Center

Life Care Center of Ocala o ers inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation unlike

any other facility, especially when it comes to the heart.

Located in Ocala, Life Care Center has been providing top-tier rehabilitation care for patients in the community for 15 years. They often work with those recovering from cardiac incidents such as bypass, pacemaker surgery or heart failure. They provide innumerable services, but cardiac rehabilitation is their specialty.

“We were the first rehab center in the United States to monitor cardiac patients; we’ve been doing it for five years,” says Dr. Segismundo Pares, one of Life Care Center’s on-site physician, of their post-acute telemetry monitoring. “In little Ocala, we were the only rehab nursing home with cardiac monitors in the United States,” he says. Life Care Center is still the only facility

in the region with this program. Dr. Robert Kitos has been the medical director of Life Care Center Ocala for approximately 10 years and a highly esteemed community physician with the IPC Inc. group.

When patients arrive following treatment at the hospital, the attending physicians collaborate with their cardiologist to continue monitoring the heart. Next, patients are fitted with halter monitors and carry phones with EKG capabilities. Results are transmitted to a third party company—they call Life Care Center ASAP to report any issues with a patient’s readings, such as irregularities in speed or rhythm. This provides an unparalleled feeling of security for both patient and physician.

Monitoring continues for approximately 10 days, when 90 percent of issues following a procedure will arise. Life Care Center’s monitoring system allows their experts to push patients a little further, helping them get home healthier, sooner.

Rehabilitation for these patients includes cardiac-specific diet education and exercise regimens designed for each patient’s needs.

A typical day consists of two sessions of therapy—the ultimate goal is getting patients to an hour and a half of exercise twice daily. They work their way up gradually while being closely monitored and having their vital signs taken. Successful rehabilitation usually takes about two weeks, plus or minus a week depending on the individual. Whatever their circumstance, patients are always encouraged to achieve as much as possible during their time at Life Care Center.

It’s not just the physicians on staff who have some expertise. Nurses go through 65 credits of supplemental training, in-services and online courses to equip them for specialized cardiac rehabilitation. Director of Nursing Adele Anahory leads her staff using years of experience and a commitment to quality and service excellence. At Life Care Center, patient

care is a team effort. With patients coming from the hospital, they need to have people who understand exactly what’s going on and can provide help.

For the clinical team at Life Care Center of Ocala, an important aspect of regaining health for their patients is lifestyle change and instilling confidence.

Life Care Center of Ocala is excited to celebrate the five-year anniversary of their wonderful cardiac program, the only one of its kind anywhere in the region. This year, they will host an informative health talk series free to the public as a community health resource. Let’s get pampered

Lifestyle Solutions MedSpa is a medical practice that blends result-oriented treatments with the upscale feel and atmosphere of a destination resort. The wealth of services offered include weight loss, CoolSculpting®, Botox ® , Restylane®, customized facials, including the incredible Hydrafacial®, peels, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, IPL photofacials, fractional skin resurfacing, permanent makeup and massage, just to name a few.

“In addition to being a certified CoolSculpting ® site, we are one of only a few practices that offers ‘dual-sculpting,’ which is very beneficial to our clients,” said Shannon. “For example, if they want to get rid of fat on both love handles, then we can use two machines at once rather than have them come for two separate appointments. This cuts treatment times in half.”

The MedSpa’s technology is all FDA cleared and proven. The Holloways pride themselves on offering only evidence- and outcome-based models of care.

“We’ve done our due diligence by carefully researching each of these procedures,” they said. “That’s why we have an incredible success rate in everything we do here. If we do not feel a treatment or procedure will provide a client with the desired result, then we do not incorporate it into our practice model.”

It’s time to renew and refresh

For two years, the Holloways have carefully thought out every detail in creating not only a practice with a unique design but also how to maximize efficient use of space. Their hard work has certainly paid dividends.

The meticulous attention to detail and stunning décor will certainly leave patients feeling breathless. Crape myrtles, palm trees, butterfl y gardens, four-tiered

waterfalls and stone columns dot the landscape. Inside, as a client undergoes treatment in a spa room, they can maximize relaxation by gazing skyward at the glimmering fiber optic star dome ceiling that features shooting stars and soothing colored sunrises and sunsets.

After treatment, the client will experience the spa bathrooms that contain beautiful mosaic tile with a state-of-the-art body shower, crystal vanity light and a beautiful lavatory faucet that illuminates to provide a visual of the water temperature (red is hot, green is warm and blue is cold). Each spa room and treatment room features a unique décor and color scheme, including eye-catching paintings that hang on the wall. The bronze and copper colored restrooms in the waiting area add even more elegance, style and artistic beauty to the facility.

In addition, the MedSpa offers a unique spa package for a girls’ day out or couples’ escape where they can undergo simultaneous treatments and in between treatments enjoy a healthy catered lunch in a private, quiet oasis outside while listening to light music and admiring a butterfly garden and tranquil fountain. A simple massage is another wonderful way to de-stress.

Without question, you’ll be hard pressed to find a medical spa that can compare with the breadth, depth and scope of services offered at Lifestyle Solutions

HOW TO HAVE A HEARTATTACK

Every seconds, someone in the United States has a heart attack.

As serious as a heart attack. That’s a phrase that people often use to convey how serious they are about something. And it’s a fitting analogy because, indeed, a heart attack is serious business. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 735,000 Americans suffer a heart attack every year. Of that number, an estimated 525,000 are a first heart attack, 210,000 happen to people who have already had a heart attack and 120,000 people die from a heart attack.

Also called a myocardial infarction, a heart attack happens when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart is reduced or even blocked. The longer this blood flow is disrupted, the greater the damage to

the heart muscles, possibly leading to death. The leading cause of heart attacks is coronary heart disease, which develops thanks to a condition known as atherosclerosis. Blame the latter on too much cholesterol plaque building up inside the coronary arteries that supply the oxygen-rich blood to the heart, thus disrupting the all-important blood flow. According to the American Heart Association, high levels (over 100mg/dl) or low-density lipoprotein (LDL), aka “bad cholesterol,” and low levels (under 40mg/dl in men and 55mg/dl in women) of highdensity lipoprotein (HDL), aka “good cholesterol,” increases the risk of a heart attack.

A coronary artery spasm is a less common cause of heart attacks. The spasm can cut off blood flow through an artery, even in those not affected by atherosclerosis. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a coronary artery spasm may be caused by cigarette smoking, extreme emotional stress or pain, taking certain drugs such as cocaine and exposure, particularly coupled with exertion, to extreme cold.

2 Eat Too Much Salt

.

In a Japanese study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, eating too much salt led to high blood pressure and an increased risk of a heart attack. The study involved more than 4,000 people who initially had normal blood pressure and who were monitored for three years. Eating too much salt long term or gradually increasing salt consumption over time both significantly raised the risk of developing high blood pressure in the study participants. At the end of the study, the least amount of sodium being consumed was 2,925mg daily and the most was 5,644mg per day. Most Americans on

1 Smoke Even One Cigarette A Day.

According to the CDC, smoking one to five cigarettes a day increases your heart attack risk by 40 percent compared with non-smokers. Smoking 20 cigarettes (one pack) a day increases your heart attack risk by 50 percent. In a University of Germany study of 30,000 people, half who were heart attack survivors, researchers found that smoking three cigarettes a day negates the protective effects of nearly two-thirds of cholesterol-lowering drugs and a daily aspirin dose. Smoking damages, thickens and narrows blood vessels; lowers good cholesterol; and raises triglycerides levels in the blood, all which contribute to heart disease.

average consume nearly 3,500mg daily, while the American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 1,500mg of sodium per day. Sodium increases blood pressure because it causes excess fluid in the body, which stresses the heart. According to The Heart Foundation, a blood pressure reading of more than 140/90mmHg or 130/80mmHg in diabetics is considered high blood pressure or hypertension.

FEB ’16 › healthyliving magazines.com 31
Here are 12 activities that can contribute to a heart attack—and what you can do to lower your risk.

HOW TO HAVE A HEARTATTACK

4 Say “Yes” To Southern Fare.

Consume Too Much Cholesterol

In a European Society of Cardiology study, researchers noted that cholesterol size, not just cholesterol levels, plays a role in heart attack risk. Smaller, denser cholesterol molecules can invade the artery wall, causing inflammation and atherosclerosis plaque. When this happens, the heart attack risk factor may increase by as much as 54 percent. In smokers with smaller cholesterol molecules, the heart attack risk increases to more than 65 percent.

6 Overuse PPIs.

happens, smaller risk

In a recent Stanford University data mining study involving 1.8 million people, researchers showed an increased risk of heart attacks in those who used proton pump inhibitors. Known as PPIs, these drugs are used by millions of people for indigestion, heartburn, peptic ulcers and gastritis. More commonly known PPIs include Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Dexilant, Aciplex and Protonix. In the study, 300,000 adults diagnosed with heartburn were compared to the frequency of heart attacks in the group treated with PPIs to the group not treated with PPIs. There was a 16 to 20 percent increase in the rate of heart attacks among the PPI users.

In a five-year study involving the diets of more than 17,000 adults in different regions of the United States, researchers found that regularly eating a typical Southern-style diet significantly increased the risk of a heart attack. The Southern-style diet included fried foods, eggs, processed meats such as bacon and ham, organ meats like liver and sugary drinks such as sweet tea. The study, conducted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Division of Preventive Medicine, reported that participants who most often ate a Southern-style diet had a 58 percent higher risk of heart disease compared to those who ate it less frequently. It should be noted that study participants only included those who had no known heart disease at the beginning of the study.

7 Get Emotional.

5 Ignore Signs OfDiabetes.

More than 3.3 million adults, including nearly 72,000 with diabetes, were tracked for five years in a Danish study to research the link between diabetes and heart attacks. The study concluded that the risk of having a heart attack was 11 times greater for women and seven times greater for men with diabetes than for non-diabetics. Additionally, diabetics were twice as likely to die following a heart attack than non-diabetics. People with diabetes often have high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, high blood glucose and are overweight, which are all considered conditions that increase the risk of heart disease and heart attacks.

Extreme emotions, both good and bad ones, can have a negative impact on the electrical impulses of the heart, leading to an involuntary sudden increase in heart rate and blood pressure. A Johns Hopkins study showed that men who are quick to anger are five times more likely to have an early heart attack than those with a more mellow personality. The same study also showed that the risk for a heart attack is greatest within the first 24 hours of losing a loved one and can remain high for a month following the death.

8 Stress Out.

Negative stressful life experiences, ranging from being fired to marital infidelity to life-threatening illness to the death of a loved one, increases the risk of a heart attack by more than 65 percent among middle-aged and older women. That finding is based on the national Women’s Health Study, which surveyed nearly 27,000 women with an average age of 56. Researchers also found that a history of financial struggle was independently associated with a two-fold higher risk for a heart attack. The most vulnerable to suffering a heart attack were women living in households earning less than $50,000 annually.

9

Overdo The Portions.

According to a Heart and Vascular Institute study, eating a large meal can trigger a heart attack within a 26-hour period following the meal. Researchers think this could be because eating raises levels of the hormone norepinephrine, which can spike blood pressure and heart rate.

11 Don’t Maintain A Healthy Weight.

In a 20-year study conducted by Scotland’s University of Glasgow, researchers noted that obese middle-aged men have a 60 percent increased risk of dying from a heart attack than nonobese men. More than 6,000 middle-aged men with high cholesterol but no history of diabetes or cardiovascular disease participated in the study. Of that number, over the study’s duration, 214 had fatal heart attacks and 1,027 had nonfatal heart attacks. Numerous previous studies

have shown that being overweight or obese can lead to high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, diabetes and coronary heart disease—all high risk factors for a heart attack.

Skip Your Fruits and Veggies.

Turns out Mom was right to nag you about eating those veggies. A Minneapolis Heart Institute study, published in the American Heart Association’s Circulation, showed that the sooner you start eating those veggies and fruits, the lower your risk for a heart attack. More than 2,500 young adults, average age 20, were tracked for two decades in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. The data was divided into three groups of nine, seven and three daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Researchers found that the participants who ate the most fruit and vegetables had 26 percent lower odds of developing calcified coronary artery plaque 20 years later, compared to the participants who ate the least amount. Higher levels of coronary calcium are associated with an increased risk for heart attacks.

12 Live A Sedentary Lifestyle.

It’s become known as “sitting disease,” and a Medical College of Wisconsin study showed that it can increase the risk of a heart attack. The heart scans and physical activity records of more than 2,000 adults, excluding anyone with known cardiovascular disease or a previous heart attack, were analyzed in the study. In the yearlong study, researchers used an accelerometer, a motiontracking device, to measure how long participants were sedentary and how much they exercised. The results showed that participants sat for a little more than five hours per day on average, with a range of two to 12 hours. The researchers found that each hour of sedentary time per day on average was associated with a 14 percent increase in coronary artery calcification, which leads to coronary artery disease, the most common type of heart disease in the United States.

A Reason To Race

THE

INAUGURAL BIG HAMMOCK RACE

SERIES AIMS TO BRING RESIDENTS OF OCALA/ MARION COUNTY

TOGETHER FOR HEALTH, FITNESS AND FUN, STRIDE BY STRIDE.

40 healthyliving magazines.com FEB ’16

“When you look at the health statistics for Marion County, they’re very disturbing,” says Karen Donnelly, who along with Tina Banner is one of the cofounders of the BHRS. “We, as runners, wanted to do something to improve those statistics and the health of our community. That’s really what led to the creation of the Big Hammock Race Series.”

According to the 2015 Marion County Community Health Assessment, reported by WellFlorida Council Inc., 19.2 percent of Marion County residents are in poor or fair health. In addition, 28 percent are considered physically inactive, which is a substantially higher percentage than in both the rest of Florida and the United States. The three top major health issues in Marion County are obesity, mental health issues and heart disease.

“Numerous research studies have proven that staying active improves both mental and physical health,” says Donnelly. “We see the Big Hammock as bringing a health initiative to Ocala and Marion County. People can participate as individuals, families and business teams.

We are delighted that Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn has taken the BHRS under his wing as an extension

The BHRS, which kicked off with the annual Turkey Trot 5K on November 26, 2015 and will conclude with the Four on the Fourth on July 4, features seven local races. Runners will earn points in both age divisions and overall categories for series-end honors. A special medal will also be awarded to those who finish all four Super Races in the BHRS.

“The great thing about the Big Hammock is that it’s for all runners, no matter your size, age or speed,” says Donnelly, who is the chief customer officer with Palm Chevrolet.

“Even if you’re not a runner, you can walk or walk-run a race. You can participate in one or two or all of the races. We want people to look at the BHRS as a health and fitness goal.”

“There are many local running groups, like the Reliable and the Turtles, that are great for runners to join. There are also groups on Facebook and many great free running apps,” says Donnelly.

“If you’re just starting to run, encouragement, support and accountability are invaluable. Runners are a great community within our community.”

As for the BHRS, Donnelly envisions a healthy future.

“We want this first year to be a great experience for everyone,” she says. “We expect this to be the beginning of a series that will be part of our community for many years to come.”

Sponsors for the BHRS include Palm Chevrolet, United Way of Marion County, Ocala Style/Healthy Living magazines and the Ocala Runners Club and Plaid Frog.

Healthy Living recently visited with a group of Ocala runners who will be participating in the BHRS and who shared the impact running has had on their lives.

AN RUNNER ALICE KellY

ALTHOUGH she had always been athletic, playing tennis and swimming, Alice Kelly had never been a runner. But much to her surprise, at 52, she became one. And 15 years later, she’s still running.

“My youngest daughter was a gymnast and was rehabbing an injury,” says Kelly, 67, a resident of The Villages for the past 11 years. “I started going to the gym with her and would get on the treadmill. I got bored with that and decided to start running outside. I was surprised how much I enjoyed running.”

Kelly enjoyed it so much that six months later she raced in her first 5K (3.1 miles). Next came a 10K (6.2 miles) and a halfmarathon (13.1 miles). One year from the date she started running, Kelly ran her first marathon, all 26.2 miles of it.

“The great thing about running, besides

doing something healthy, is the social aspect of it,” says Kelly. “Over the years, I joined several runners’ groups; they become the people you spend a lot of time around. You train together, you race together and you have fun together.”

Kelly usually runs four days a week, meeting up with other runners in The

Villages at 6:30am. On long-run days, meaning 20 miles, the start time is 5:30am. Usually, Kelly racks up about 35 to 40 miles a week.

“It’s nice to have someone else to run with, especially on longrun days,” says Kelly. “We chat and keep each other company. And then we end up at a coffee shop at the end of the run.”

Kelly used to run a race every weekend, but now she typically competes once a month. She mixes it up between shorter and longer races. And when she isn’t competing in road races, Kelly swims, strength trains and bikes. Active

WEIGHT

“At one point, I weighed 385 pounds,” says Sampson, 43. “I even had gastric bypass surgery and lost 200 pounds. But my weight would fluctuate every time I got pregnant; I have three kids. So trying to lose weight and be healthy was always a struggle. But when I started running, things changed.”

After joining the local YMCA with friends in 2010, Sampson’s running journey began on a lark.

in the Senior Games, a triathlon is a future goal.

“I like staying as active as possible,” says Kelly, who gets new running shoes every 300 miles. “I’m really looking forward to competing in the Big Hammock races. I love local races.”

As for running advice, Kelly says, “I’m proof you can start running at any age. Just start slowly, get good shoes and join a runner’s group for support.”

“A friend said we should sign up for the Turkey Trot 5K,” she recalls. “We really didn’t even train for it. The day before the race, we got on the treadmills at the YMCA just to make sure we could go three miles. We ended up walking the whole way, but we did it. And that inspired us to really start running and sign up for a race a month.”

Sampson started doing walk/run intervals while concentrating “on just one step at a time and not worrying about speed.” Soon Sampson decided she needed “a big goal if I was going to get up and train at 5am, so I signed up for the 2012 Disney

Marathon.” She had plenty of support, having helped found the Reliable Runners Club.

“We come in all shapes, sizes and speeds,” says Sampson, an online marketing associate director for ATT.com. “We all see ourselves as runners. We support each other through training and races. We’ve become family.”

As for that Disney Marathon, Sampson achieved that goal and, as of this writing, has now run in seven marathons. She and other Reliable Runners Club members like “to do a variety from road races to mud runs to even triathlons.” Running has even become a family affair for Sampson with her husband, Quinn, and children, Bailey, Riley and Ashley, running in local races.

“I am amazed how running and the Reliables have changed my life,” says Sampson, who typically runs 25 miles a week. “I’m looking forward to running in as many of the Big Hammock Race Series events as possible.”

LESSONS

BEING a kid with asthma, Casey Lussier admits she was one of those kids who opted out of physical education classes and sports in school. But that

“I was having a lot of stress issues dealing with the transition to college life,” says Lussier, 21, who is majoring in elementary education at UF. “I come home to Ocala on most weekends, and my neighbor suggested I try running to relieve the stress. Having asthma, I wasn’t sure I could run, but Karen thought I should try.”

As fate would have it, Lussier’s neighbor was Karen Donnelly, an avid runner and co-founder of the Big Hammock Race Series. Lussier says that “Karen put me on a basic Couch to 5K plan. I started with running for 30 seconds and walking for two minutes and then repeating that over and over.” Two months later, she ran her first 5K. But the course had been incorrectly marked and Lussier actually ended up running four and a half miles instead of 3.1 miles.

“This showed me that I was capable of much more than I thought possible,” says Lussier. “So I signed up for the 2015 Disney Half-Marathon. I have always been a Disney girl.”

On the way to Disney, Lussier upped her mileage, ran in a few 5Ks and an Ocala half-marathon that “left me so sore that I didn’t run for a week afterward.” And then it was time for the Disney Half-Marathon.

“I know it sounds cliché, but it was so magical,” recounts Lussier. “When I crossed the finish line, I felt like I had really become a runner.”

While enrolled in an accelerated program that will allow her to get her master’s degree in four years,

changed when she began attending the University of Florida.

Lussier logs training runs two to three times a week on the UF campus. When home on the weekends, her younger sister Allie, 15, joins her on runs and in 5K races.

“My family, especially my mom, Tina, and, of course, Karen, have been so supportive,” says Lussier. “The plan is to run in the Big Hammock Super Races and get that cool medal.”

Lifelong RUNNERS

“Ruth and I always believed in staying active,” says Bill, 68, who owns Ocala-based Gorman Construction Services Inc. “So when we stopped playing racquetball, we just transitioned into running. We got involved in the Ocala Runners Club and ran a lot of those early local races. Now our main running group is the Turtles Running Club.” Soon the Gormans went beyond local races to regional and national ones. Bill has to date run in 10 marathons, including Disney and Chicago. Ruth, who is also 68, has to date competed in 11 marathons, including Boston. They typically average 15 to 20 races a year, from 5Ks to marathons. For the past seven years, the Gormans have qualified for the Phidippides Award, which is given by the U.S.A. Track and Field Association to master runners over 40 who earn points by participating in road races throughout the year.

AND RUTH gorman

“We’re early morning runners,” says Bill. “We’re on the road at 5am every day. We meet with the Turtles group three times a week at different local spots in Ocala. Typically, we run about 25 to 30 miles a week.”

Bill points out that “groups like the Turtles are a great way to get into running. The only requirement is that you have to be willing to run at 5am.” That requirement is worth it Bill says, “because you get good training and social support.” Of course, the Gormans will be participating in the Big Hammock Race Series, along with other Turtles runners.

“Running has kept us healthy, fit and mentally vibrant,” says Bill. “And runners are a great community of people to be around.”

picking the perfect pet

Americans love their pets. The proof comes in dollar signs.

According to U. S. News & World Report, Americans spend over $60 billion annually on their pets.

The average pet-owning household spends a little over $500 per year, which, interestingly, is more than the average household spends on alcohol.

Research shows that even when Americans were struggling during the recession of 2008 and 2009, they weren’t shorting their animals. They might have curtailed eating

out in restaurants, but the money spent on pet food remained steady.

Companionship and un- conditional love are often cited as reasons for having pets, but sharing your life with an animal isn’t just emotionally rewarding. There are also numerous health benefits attached—as if you needed another reason to bring home that adorable kitten or puppy.

Pets can help lower blood pressure, reduce depression, ease shyness, improve the

pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels, and heart attack survivors with pets live longer than those without. It’s even been noted that Alzheimer’s patients who have pets in the home will have fewer anxious outbursts.

Contrary to earlier beliefs, recent studies suggest that children growing up in a household with “furred animals” will have less risk of allergies and asthma than kids raised in a pet-free home.

• How much time will I realistically spend with an animal?

• How much space do I have for a pet—inside and outside?

• How much am I willing to put into caring for a pet— time-wise and financially?

• Do I want “cuddly and furry” or less conventional?

• Do I want an animal that requires lots of interaction or not so much?

• If you rent, does the lease/landlord allow pets, and which kinds?

“Certain pets, especially certain dog breeds, require a significant amount of time as they need daily socialization and exercise,” says Dr. Starkey. “Cats tend to require a lower time commitment than dogs but still need attention and affection. Specialty pets like fish, guinea pigs, hamsters and birds all have varying requirements for care and the maintenance of habitats. However, on the whole, these pets tend to require less time than dogs, and some have a similar time

If you work full time, travel regularly for work or live in an apartment, you can still enjoy the rewards of having a pet. You just might want to consider one that is “lower maintenance,” such as aquarium fish, a “pocket pet” (gerbil, hamster, Guinea pig, etc.) or bird.

“While all pets require time and attention, fish—in particular Bettas—can make for excellent pets for those with limited available time to dedicate to pet care,” says Dr. Starkey. “Snakes and small pets, such as gerbils and hamsters, can also be a great choice for those with limited time and space, but these pets still require keeping a feeding and water schedule and, in some cases, daily interactions.”

“In general, reptiles may not be the best pet if you have young children in the home,” advises Dr. Starkey. “Not only do reptiles require moderately advanced care, such as specific heat, light and humidity requirements, as well as specialized food, reptiles have a higher propensity to carry Salmonella. The risk of human infection is greatly reduced with proper hand washing; however, younger children may not have the best hand-washing habits and this could increase the chance for infection.”

Although it sounds a bit morbid, you should also think about life span when considering which type of pet is best for you. Gerbils, rats and hamsters usually live two to three years, spayed or neutered house rabbits generally live eight to 12 years, while African gray parrots often live between 50 and 70 years.

It’s no surprise that dogs are called “man’s best friend.” The human-animal connection with a dog can be second-to-none. Experts give the following dog breeds high marks as a choice for families with children.

“Puppies and kittens can be irresistible. Families and individuals should be prepared for the extra time and effort for training, as well as patience for mistakes in the learning process and the overall mischievousness and rambunctious nature of puppies and kittens,” Dr. Starkey points out.

“Although all pets require time and attention, an adult pet with some basic training, such as potty training, may be a better fit for the busy family or individual,” he notes. “Adopting an adult pet can be a wonderful way for a family to do its part to help solve pet homelessness.”

Not only is there a wide variety of animals to choose from at an adoption

shelter or rescue, but you also accomplish two things at once.

“When you adopt an animal, you are actually saving two lives—the one you adopt and the animal that can now be rescued and go into that vacated space and hopefully be adopted as well,” says Joanne Yohannan, Senior Vice President of Operations for the North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest “no kill” animal rescue and adoption organization.

an animal may end up at a shelter, and typically, they are relinquished to these organizations as a result of circumstances beyond their control,” explains Yohannan. “Sometimes, owners have to move, there could be a divorce, illness or someone passes away. Lives change, and unfortunately, provisions might not have been made for the animals and they end up in shelters. There are also animals that require behavior modifications; however, many local shelters and rescue organizations work with

decades. The American people no longer accept euthanasia as a means of population control,” Yohannan points out. “We’ve gone from being a country that was euthanizing over 18 million animals a year to now

“We’ve gone from being a country that was euthanizing over 18 million animals a year to now euthanizing less than 3 to 4 million animals per year.”

If you think shelters are full of down-on-their-luck, unwanted animals, think again.

“There are many beautiful animals available in local shelters or rescue groups that are in need of loving homes. There are many

circumstances in which

considering to get to know

Yohannan encourages potential adopters to make it a household affair and bring in everyone in the family when you go to a shelter or rescue group. The idea is to make sure everyone gets along with the animal. Be sure to allow plenty of time and, if necessary, plan a return trip. You want to be sure you spend enough time with the animal(s) you’re considering to get to know their personalities.

“There are many ways you can help prevent euthanasia in your community,” she adds. “Spaying or neutering will not only keep your pet healthy but also greatly reduces the overpopulation of unwanted litters. You can also volunteer at your local shelter, and when the time comes to add a pet to your family, always adopt rather than buy an animal. Social media platforms have given voices to homeless animals across the country, so make sure you use all of your social media platforms to give a voice to homeless animals in your community.”

Above and beyond her dental and endodontic certification, Dr. Nixon has received additional training in hospital medicine, surgical microscope endodontist surgery, oral facial pain and anxiety management. She has been committed to teaching patients, general dentists and new endodontists since the beginning of her career.

An endodontist is a root canal specialist. Root canal procedures are required when the pulp tissue (dental nerve) becomes dam- aged and infected. Root canal therapy removes the damaged tissue, cleans the root canal space, and then shapes it so it can be sealed to prevent future infec- tion. Root canal therapy, along with the appropriate dental restorations, can help a patient maintain a healthy oral condition. Contact us for more information!

Manage The Munchies

When comfort food is calling.

Though it may seem helpful at the time, reaching for junk food actually makes stress worse and can add a pile of guilt right on top of all those extra calories. And if you’re a stress eater, you might not realize what you’re doing until it’s already done. So, we’re here to help you turn things around and develop healthier ways to manage your stress.

Healthy Steps

First, you’ll need to notice your stress-eating habits so you can counteract them. What types of food tempt you the most? And how much stress does it take to send you snacking? There’s no cookiecutter solution for all the stressors encountered daily, but these seven steps will get you on your way to stressing the healthy way.

Question hunger.

Before you reach for food, ask yourself if you’re really hungry. Rate your hunger on a scale from one to 10, with 10 being most hungry. If you’re between six and 10, you likely need food. If you’re below six, it’s probably just your stress talking.

Snack healthy.

Craving sugary sweets? Eat some fruit. What about that bag of potato chips? Keep some nuts and seeds handy for when you want something salty.

Drink tea.

Specifically, black tea. It can help reduce your blood cortisol level, which is elevated by stress.

Walk it off.

A little exercise will boost your mood and energy. Taking a walk doesn’t require a lot of effort, and it will allow you to think through your problems. Plus, it will make it easier to skip the junk food when you get back.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Stop, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Slow breathing will calm your nerves and relax your body as if you’re preparing to fall asleep. Take at least 10 deep breaths to clear your head.

Talk about it.

Get the support you need from friends and family. Just talking about what’s stressing you out and knowing someone’s there for you will help relieve some of the pressure you may feel.

Get some shut-eye.

Do your best to get enough sleep. Without it, your body will experience higher levels of stress and ghrelin (your “hunger hormone”).

No Excuses

Fitness trainers share their favorite tips for staying motivated.

Hitting the gym, the road or spin class can be exciting and fun at first. But after a while, routine, life and exhaustion can get in the way. Before giving up on exercise, though, take a look at some of the ways physical trainers and fitness instructors stay motivated. Who knows? You might end up exercising more and loving it.

Turn it up.

Astrid Swan, a personal trainer in Los Angeles, suggests turning up the tunes to get pumped and ready to work out. “Music brings me back to me,” she says.

Make shortterm goals.

Set goals for each fitness class or workout session to help you perform at your best and feel more accomplished, suggests fitness trainer Erin Bulvanoski from New York.

Adopt a mantra or motto.

Swan suggests finding a favorite phrase, song lyric or quote to keep handy when you feel like skipping a workout. Repeat the phrase to yourself to get moving.

Live in the moment.

Personal trainer Daniela Iannone from New Jersey asks her clients to be mindful of the present moment when working out.

“Where your mind goes, your energy goes with it,” she says.

Switch it up. Take a group class, try a new routine or start a different activity to keep things fresh and fun. Annie Mulgrew, the program director at a New York fitness studio, goes to group fitness classes for new ideas.

Boost your energy pre-workout.

The International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that consuming caffeine pre-workout can help burn more calories. Swan says matcha green tea gives her that extra shot of energy.

Find a workout partner.

Bulvanoski feels more motivated to be her best when working out with friends. It’s more fun, too.

Make a mental choice.

For Iannone, it’s all about changing your mindset to accomplish your fitness goals. There’s no shortcut or quick fix, she says.

Get inspired by social media.

Search fitness hashtags and let fitness-related images motivate you to work hard and meet your goals. “Seeing bodies in motion and images of strength motivates me,” says Iannone.

Keep a journal.

Iannone jots down motivational quotes and positive feelings in a journal to look back on when she needs a boost. Keep track of your progress, too. When you’re feeling down or unmotivated, look back at how far you’ve come to put it all in perspective.

A Better Brew

Ready to take your brewing skills beyond the classic drip coffee maker?

There are four main ways to brew coffee, each determined by the way the water is introduced to the grounds. Though there are several different tools you can use for each of these methods, we’re going to explain the most common ways to accomplish each of them. Let’s get brewing!

Decoction/ Boiling

This method involves boiling water with fine or coarse coffee grounds and either filtering out the grounds or letting them settle at the bottom. Turkish coffee is an example. Bring fine grounds and water to a boil on the stove (usually in a narrow-topped pot) before removing from the heat. The result? Strong coffee with a layer of foam on the top and grounds on the bottom.

Infusion/Steeping

Steeping coffee grounds in water brings out more flavor. The most common tool for this method is the French press. After placing coarse coffee grounds into the press, pour hot water over them and let them steep for three to four minutes before pressing the plunger down. Another way to do this is by placing coffee grounds in a SoftBrew machine. Pour hot water over the grounds, and steep for a few minutes before enjoying a cup. The SoftBrew machine’s cylinder will keep the grounds from slipping into the coffee.

Pressurized Brewing

This method uses pressurized water to shoot through tightlypacked grounds. It’s used to make espresso by forcing high pressure water through finely ground coffee. The result is a stronger, more robust tasting coffee with a light foam on top. Single-serve coffee makers use the pressurized brewing method, too, only with low pressure water moving through fine grounds and a layer or two of filter paper.

Gravity Feed/ Filtration

Brewing coffee this way leaves it up to gravity to pull water through the grounds. This is where your drip coffee machine fits in. But another way to accomplish this technique is by making cold brew, or cold press, coffee. To make it, pour cold water over the grounds and let them steep for eight to 24 hours in the cold brew coffee maker. Remove the stopper so the coffee can filter through, leaving the grounds behind. The resulting coffee will be less acidic and have a smooth, rich taste. You can make similar coffee, called cold drip coffee, by letting cold water drip through the grounds rather than steeping in them.

Negative Nancy Vs. Positive Polly

ONE.

Researchers found that people who are happier have a harder time feeling empathy for others. The study suggested that happy people had a tougher time understanding other’s emotions than the people who were more pessimistic. In fact, the happy people were less likely to recognize the emotional tone of a negative monologue, despite claiming that they were confident in their answers. The people who thought more negatively tended to see the emotions of others and judge them accordingly. This goes to show that sometimes a happy-go-lucky person might not recognize the words that were left unsaid, so it’s always better to communicate effectively and just simply say what you mean.

Reversal Of Roles

AMISSED APPOINTMENTS. Signs of forgetfulness may indicate that your loved one needs assistance keeping track of what medication needs to be taken and when appointments are scheduled for. If transportation is a problem, perhaps your parent just needs a ride to and from an appointment. If you can’t help, maybe Senior Services can.

UNPAID BILLS. Managing a checking account can often become a task too big for someone advancing in age. There are financial firms available to help the elderly track and maintain their expenses. Or maybe a joint checking account with your mom or dad might be the way to go so you can keep an eye on the funds to ensure everything is running smoothly.

Either way, it’s important to recognize when your aging parents may need a bit more help.

Hygiene. When you notice a parent wearing the same item of clothing time and time again, it’s likely a sign that laundry is being neglected. Balance issues may also prevent some elderly people from showering or bathing out of fear of falling in the tub.

CLUTTER. You may start to notice the house becoming unusually cluttered. It may become evident that your parents just can’t keep up with chores like they once were able to. If their health is the factor slowing them down, it’s likely they could use some help. If you can’t help, maybe a weekly or monthly maid could.

SPOILED FOOD ITEMS. Shopping, cooking and cleaning is hard work. Some elderly people may eat just enough to get by, leaving uneaten food to spoil. Noticeable weight loss is another sign that a loved one is not eating a nutritious diet.

DO THEY POSE A DANGER TO THEMSELVES? Look for scorched pots and pans. This could be a result of short-term memory loss, a sign that food is being forgotten about while it’s still cooking. This is a major fire hazard and poses a threat not only to those living inside the house but all surrounding neighbors. Are they leaving doors unlocked or cigarettes burning? All of these are warning signs that your aging parent may need more specialized care.

Potpourri

Make your own stovetop potpourri by bringing two to three cups of water to a boil and then return to a simmer. Plop some of these inexpensive household items into the pot and enjoy alone or prepare it in just a few minutes before company comes over. You can use any ingredients you like, but here are some starter recipes to try.

Fresh and Clean

Three lemons, sliced, 1 tablespoon vanilla and a few sprigs of fresh rosemary is an easy way to freshen up any space. It’s the perfect potpourri combination to get you motivated when it comes time for spring cleaning this year.

Fall Pumpkin

We all love the smells of autumn, and now we can have them all year. You need ground nutmeg, vanilla extract and whole cloves (1 tablespoon each) as well as a quartered apple and a can of pumpkin.

The next time you go to the store, pick up two oranges, at least a cup of fresh cranberries, cinnamon sticks (you’ll need 3) and a tablespoon of whole cloves. It’s the perfect cold weather aroma.

If you need to bring a hostess gift to a party or want to give a friend a little token, put the ingredients of your favorite stovetop potpourri recipe in a jar and add a pretty tag with instructions.

Summer Lovin’

Can’t make it to the beach this weekend? Bring the beach to you. Once the water has boiled, mix in a sliced lime, a can of pineapple juice, one cinnamon stick and two to three drops of coconut extract. You may forget you’re not in Aruba.

Citrus Mint

Need a scent to wake you up? Liven up your space like so: Slice three to four limes and add a few sprigs of thyme and mint. Substitute 1 teaspoon mint extract if you don’t have the fresh stuff, and pour in 1 teaspoon vanilla for a little sweetness.

Don’t want to bring a pot of water to boil?

Instead, you can add the water and potpourri ingredients to a slow cooker and allow it to simmer on low.

Facebook Blues

Ever heard of Essena O’Neill?

In November 2015, the young model announced to her over 612,000 Instagram followers she was quitting social media.

She began a video series instead, describing how social media led her to unhealthy eating and exercise habits and the unbearable pressure she felt to look perfect. She didn’t want others comparing themselves to her, and she has a point. Seeing the highlight reels of our friends’ lives isn’t always good for us.

A study by the University of Michigan found that Facebook users felt more depressed and less satisfied with their lives the longer they spent on the site. Another by Ottawa Public Health found that teens who use social media more than two hours a day are significantly more likely to endure psychological distress and have suicidal thoughts. Like all good things, social media is best in moderation. Here’s how we can use it in a healthy way.

Keep a social media diary.

For a few days, write down how often you use social media and how you feel afterward. You may uncover some patterns you can change to improve your mental well-being. If scrolling through heavily edited Instagram posts of delicious food leaves you feeling dissatisfied with your lunch, avoid Insta until after you’ve eaten your PB&J.

Remember that social media ≠ reality.

Most bloggers carefully set up the beautiful photos they’re taking and have props nearby. They may be promoting an expensive new jacket they love, but they’re probably being paid to post. Even our real-life friends have often filtered their photos to make that sunset look supernaturally beautiful.

Fight FOMO.

It’s hard to see friends post photos of their weddings, vacations and new cars. Fear of missing out is real, and it can leave us feeling depressed or like we’re not living life to the fullest. Before you freak, check in with yourself: Is what they’re doing actually something you want? Is it viable for you? We can’t all go to Bali for a month, and maybe you’re saving up for something better anyway.

Turn off notifications

It’s unrealistic to go a day without your phone or computer, but you won’t hear social media’s siren song if you turn off the pop-up notifications on your phone. If you can’t see what you’re missing, you’re less likely to log in.

Remember your own goals.

Seeing homemade food and perfect outfits can make you want the same, but remember your own aspirations (and what you already have). A little gratitude can keep you positive and grounded instead of thinking you should quit your job to travel the world because Facebook said so. 64 healthyliving magazines.com FEB ’16
